How to Play Drums Like JD Beck

- I've always been fascinated by JD's playing. I've noticed a few patterns that he often plays so I picked a few that we can use to piece together our own JD beck inspired flow. Enjoy!

what makes JD Beck special is he's so small that he can fit entirely inside the pocket
😅😅
Lol
That's the best comment I've read today.
This was fucking hilarious
Hahaha!
The fact that there are videos analysing the instrumental language of a 16 years old that looks half his own age is amazing
Facts. His timing was perfect. He came out with a whole group of musicians that were on the rise
there’s no way this guy is 32
the spungolator he is 16 years old I think the comment’s trying to say he looks 8
My thoughts exactly
the spungolator lmao you smart huh?
"We haven't put any inanimate objects in the snare drum yet"
Made my day ♥️
@@jonathanreddish8590 I use lizards.
Jonathan Reddish You get that cat off your snare!
🤣
I prefer gecs
I am a 57 year old drummer who has been obsessed with Domi and JD Beck the past two months! THANK YOU so much Brandon for this extremely informative lesson. You cracked the code dude! Now I am obsessed with Brandon Scott videos. You are an awesome teacher, you broke it down perfectly to the point that I just called in work (day job) to practice my new JD Beck Technique. You are a very good teacher sir. THANK YOU !
Dude, I'm 61 myself and JD is like the best player I've heard in years This video does a great job of breaking it down. How do these kids come to be such badasses? Makes me very happy.
@@stephenpaulharper Similar to people like Tony Williams who was playing with Miles Davis at 17. Kids today have been playing to programmed beats that just were not a thing when us old blokes were his age.
@@cave1958 I just watched Tony Williams playing with Jan Hammer, shortly before he died.. Your point is well-taken
I saw your comment and had to say that I'm 65, a keyboard player and because of Domi, I've been inspired to get practicing again. Both JD and Domi are the future. No grande visual antics or exaggerated physical movement on the drums. It's all in his wrists, and Domi's playing is inspiring. Yes, I'm with you Mr FusionHowie. My best wishes from Yorkshire England.
@@stephenpaulharper Same here at 64! As Blakey to me once at the Village Vanguard it never ends, there's always more.
Didn’t know who jd beck was before this vid, then I found out he was a kid and I cried
I think a big part of his playing is that he does NOT hit hard. He's a tight, but dynamically soft player, very similar to DJ from Khruangbin. That's why Domi sits right next to him when they're playing together. He's not SLAMMING the drums.
my favorite thing that JD Beck does is THE METRIC MODULATION!!! He completely switches the feel
Which video is that?
Yeah, which video is that?
he does it here ua-cam.com/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/v-deo.html

@@coragon42 thanks! I'll watch it again. I wasn't paying attention.
Youre a brilliant drummer to be able to break it down like you did. But now you just spawned an army of JD Becks
Fuckin love the conceptual approach to this, so much better than just a transcription of a lick. Shows drummers how to actually use this shit to make a vocabulary
"What's up drumheads" makes me a big smile every time 😅🔥
Dawid Czogała HAHA glad to brighten your day :) thanks for watching!
legit the biggest coincidence I've been binge watching his stuff for the last week dudes a beast
Alec Williams I know, I made this video just for u.
@@BrandonScottDrums cheers g
I've been somewhat almost obsessively fascinated with JD Beck's playing for some time now, but I don't play drums but I really want to, I just can't afford them yet. So thanks for this. Dude, the guy has been playing like 24/7 since he was like 5 years old. It makes sense that he's as good as he is but it's still really absurd. So it's a prowess for you to figure this stuff out. Great job
You could buy a practice pad (or two), this will let you start working on rudiments to get the coordination of your limbs going as well as a feel for the sticks. If you're in school you could also try joining band/music class to get some time on drums
This is super cool! You should do this kind of thing but for Louis Cole :o
Check Louis's recent video where he shows few of his grooves himself - ua-cam.com/video/6OJHDJdplcY/v-deo.html
@ToeJ Yep and play every other instrument, compose a song, write lyrics and sing.
@ToeJ """""""any""""""""" multi-instrumentalist.
ToeJ damn hater alert
I've been noodling around on drums on and off for like 17 years and I've never used a hi hat foot as a down beat like that. Man I've been missing out
Yeah seriously? It seems huge
Really? I'm kinda shocked. Always known about them (12 years playing) but only recently started feeling comfortable using them myself. They definitely feel pretty awkward still
Ever heard of Steve gadd
@@androidntknd4675 It's pretty much never done in rock/pop drumming. It's a jazz thing. So it makes sense that someone wouldn't have used it even if they play regularly.
I love how you break it down into pieces. Its something everyone should do. Learn patterns that can be turned to groove. This is how you develop your own sound.
this was probably the most useful tutorial I've seen.
breaking it up into pieces like that makes it so much more digestible
Thank you so much!!! 🙏🏼 I’m always trying to find more simplistic ways of thinking about things.
I play congas and have been intimidated by the drums...but JD Beck and this video has been inspirational...I'm going to practice this now...
Great video. You simply nailed it. Garibaldi had made it popular long time ago in funk. It's simply paradiddle concepts around the kit. Experienced drummers master different variations since Buddy Rich. Your explanation is very simple and the best I've found do far. Very easy to understand for most drummers. Beck masters it at lightning speed, very tightly and in a creative way.
YO BRANDON that peanut butter made the groove tasty, keep killin brother.
Heh, nice
Might not be so tasty for people with a nut allergy
This video helped me discover JD Beck. Wow! He’s phenomenal....a true prodigy. Blows my mind what amazing sounds he gets from so few pieces on the kit.
When you play the first groove slowly it sounds almost like an afrobeat groove, which gives the whole thing some funk. I think that’s part of what makes his playing give you that stank face!
As a drum programmer, I love your philosophy; as a drum player, I am constantly in awe of Drum Players
he also loves to do this little flutter kick drum. it’s super hard to pull off but if ur able to do somethin close it sounds super cool.
What makes your videos so unique is that not only do you provide awesome content, you entertain. You crack me up. You made my day.
The use of the left foot on the hi hat is something that never would have occurred to me. That’s neat.
Mr. Scott your video lessons are very useful, i congratulate you for your naturale ability to explain and demonstrate with the tool, it has an extraordinary effectiveness, thank you very much, a greeting from Italy by Daniele.
Finally someone did this video!! Thank you man (1 dislike is from Louis Cole)

Clicked on this video and saw your name and face and had a strange feeling I knew you from somewhere. Took me a second until I realized I watched all of your BTBAM covers like 8 years ago. Gave me some major nostalgia haha. Anyways, great vid!

i like this channel so much!!!, but you put the office and i love it now XD cheers from Argentina man!! great video!!
Super informative! As a bass player I'm kind of interested to see how this method of "improvisation" could transfer to other instruments..
Thats incredible, always wondered how tf he plays like that. Thanks man! Time to hit the shed
Nailed it. Nailed it my friend.
"C is gonna be like your backbeat"
...okay
"and then C is the backbeat"
YES!!
Was just trying to find something to work on today. Thanks Brandon 🤙🏻🔥
Anything for you Ben. :)

Yeah man thanks! Super fun
What’s the sticking on the measure with the little five stroke or is it a four stroke roll? I want to fit that in and all I can come up with is a para diddle diddle before the five stroke
Hey dude I thank you for this
duuuuuude.....pufff mindblown
Love you for this
