- Anderson Powerpole Connectors How to Guide "12-volt Connection of Choice!"
A useful mnemonic for remembering the arrangement for the positive connector "Red Right-Tongue Top". The ham radio community, including ARES and RACES have adopted a standard Anderson Powerpole Connectors polarity for use in amateur radio to allow universal interconnectivity for power amateur radio gear.

Sir, respectfully, there will be viewers of this video that will say --> Anderson PowerPole Connectors, the accessories that go with this setup, the expensive pliers and FISKARS scissors, the whipping done and shrink tubing (all sizes), you Sir just have too much money to spend.
I, on the other hand, and truthfully, will and do state wholeheartedly that you constructed an EXCELLENT job all around. Great work, with alot of attention to details. A much needed video on how things, especially if dealing correctly with mid-to- very high powered equipment, should be done!
Great job.
Thank you Sir, very much indeed, for your hard work, in educating the majority of us.
73s, Oscar (KG5ULB).
I’m delighted that UA-cam finally suggested this 10 year old video. Job well done, sir! This is by far the most comprehensive tutorial on Anderson Powerpoles with great tips. “Red on right and tongue up”
Thank you so much!!
I love Anderson Power poles, and you have done an amazing job of putting them to use. Heat shrink and strain relief will give these a very long haul. Well done! this video gave me some ideas! thanks
Once again Doc first class!!! You make learning enjoyable! It's because of your videos I became a ham. My boys and I ( Nate 8 and Ethan is 7) listened live on Thursday night to Col Doug Wheelock on my Yaesu VX-8. Lets just say I was the man that night. 73 and Semper Fi KB1UVI Jim
thanks for the video. My MFJ version of Anderson did not include any instructions how to assemble the connectors or how they plug into the distribution unit.
just wanted to thank you for this video, as you confirmed some info i needed about these connectors, which nobody else stated. The rating of connector is only the pin, not the housing, a 30 can connect to the 15 or 45 connector.
I know this is an old video, and you may not see this comment, but Thank-you for making it,Thank-you for style, tight editing, and the clever ideas.
+DC smith - Thank you 🙏 for the kid words!
Great video David! I just hooked up all my ham gear with Anderson PowerPoles and your video was extremely helpful to me as I figured out the proper way to hook them up. 73, KC3AEZ
Great video. I couldn't ask for better instructions. Thank you for taking the time to make this and sharing. (Henry)
Very neat method for strain relief. I'll have to try it out!
Thanks for the video!
Great video, very detailed. It covers all the bases and in perfect detail!
Awesome tutorial, Really like the strain relief with the mason cord! Now I just hope I can figure out how to tie that correctly! Perfect job in my book, very solid well done connections and cable dressing
You make an excellent instructor. Thanks.
I liked your idea for the strain relief. I've needed something like that many times. Thanks.
WOW. Just WOW. The stuff you come up with I have to say never crosses my mind until I watch your videos. I'm glad you do these videos so I can copy what you do. LOL. It makes so much sense to do it but it's like I just don't think about this kind of stuff, and it's neat how you can come up with the simplest ways of doing it.
Hi, thank you for the video, I was very impressed, so much so I bought a couple of bags of the 30Amp Powerpoles. Best thing radio wise I've done. I'm a member of RAYNET here in the UK and it has made messing around with my kit so much simpler. Thanks for the informative video. Kind regards Terry M3TPD.
Great video and instructions. I followed your instructions and made my first Anderson powerpoles and they look great. Thank you for sharing. 73's from Canada. VE3ITU.
Thank you for the kind words!
I agree with your comment. Anderson Powerpoles have made working with my gear much easier and a lot simpler.
73!
Excellent video.
You’ve given lots of detail that will be helpful for those of use using the Powerpole. I especially like your idea of using a whipping stitch for strain relief. I am definitely going to start using that myself.
Thanks for sharing!

Great video. I distribute 12 vdc from my battery bank to all rooms of my house and I have been looking for a way to terminate and connect. They make wall plates for these that fit a standard electrical box. Solves my dilemma. Thanks for your good work.
Great video, David! I especially liked the whipping as a strain relief... a bit time consuming, but darn near guaranteed not to fail. Nice.
Nice video, just what I was looking for. I've got a bunch of 30A PowerPoles...now I just need to get one of those crimping tools.
73, NV1T
What size wire do you use for your cable? What size Anderson Power Poles are you using? I am new to ham radio and I have learned a lot watching your videos. I just bought a Yaesu 857D a few days ago ( my first radio) and I found out how little I know about the hobby. Thanks for the great videos and the help.
thanks for the tips little ocd lol but very good work
I did my first connector today. Thank you for your video it was amazing help
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!!
Magnificent demo. thank you so much !!
+68cristian - Thank you for watching!
You did a fantastic and professional job on this instructional video! Best I have seen in a long time. '73
Love this video!!! Super informative. I'll need to get some Anderson's.
A surgeon's skill with the scissors;-)
How it *should* be done. It's a skill making videos like that. Thanks.
+Dippy Hippy - You made me smile 😎 thanks for watching!
Thank-you for a very informative video. Well made and well explained. Helped me !
Great video, Doc. I am a former USN DOC and flight surgeon (now pathologist). W7DOC
Nice video. I like the strain relief. I used something like it when I wired my airplane. Thanks Doc.
great video, I'm using power pole connectors now, thank you
I have watched over 75 videos on solar type electronics. You are absolutely "the best of the best, of the best," (think Men in Black) in explaining the upsides and downsides of the Anderson PowerPoles. I appreciate the editing and the total thought of this video. I write novels and screenplays: so I easily saw your absolute thoroughness from beginning to end. "Well done good and faithful (electrical) servant! "
Great Vid and idea! Thanks for sharing Doc!
Very nicely done video. Thanks for the information.
Superb quality workmanship!
Thank you!
Outstanding!
Enjoyed the information!
Great Job !!!! Thanks for the info
Awesome video. Thanks!
Fantastic!!! Many thanks!
Nice informative vid. I like Dean's Ultra plugs, they are the industry standard for radio control cars/aircraft. They are terrific connectors, and I don't know why hams aren't using them.
no soldering.
Thanks for your video since this is the first time I have tried Anderson Power Poles. 73. KH6JMK
Thanks - couldn't have done it without your help.
Great video Doc, I do love these little connectors and I love your accessories you have created. I shall borrow those. A couple of things that I do differently is that I solder all my connections rather than to crimp. (I'm too cheap to buy that tool) and I never use those little roll pins. I find they stay in place without any help but if I had a problem I'd put a little drop of super glue on that dovetail and be done. I don't want that little piece of metal anywhere near my electricity. Mike.. W4TRK
Someone should make PLASTIC ROLL PINS FOR THIS 🙏
I have two questions:
1) What gauge is the wire you're working with in this video?
2) Where did you get the battery clamps?
Great vid, thanks for helping me out as a Powerpole neophyte! 73, N0TEA
Thank you for watching! 73 de David / KF7ETX
well done that was great thank you.
Excellent video sir! 73 de AC6GM!
Great video. I think I will use this method the next time I need to wire anything 12v. Thanks!
Awesome skills man... Keep doing what your doing... It's like I always say...
Let's all learn from each other...
great video i will have to get some anderson power pole connectors
Nice whipping, great connectors with other hams using the same connector It could be very handy to swap gear
Enjoyed!
Amazing video!
Good question! I am sure they could be hooked up, however I am not sure of the utility for do so. I don't have any experience with XLR connectors.
Brilliant info as always, what size/type wire are you using?
very helpful I am updating my station Thanks!
Cool! Thanks for watching!
Great instructions. I have them on my list
Nice explanation. New to HAM, and am getting ready to build a go box. It made the most sense to use the powerpole setup.
Good job...73

Dude-great video. Explained very well. I use these connectors. Nothing better. Their like the Cadillac of cars. Like Kleenex of tissues. Like the Coke of cola. Well you get the idea.
I do not use the roll pins as they might fall out unexpectedly, I use super glue to hold the two Power poles together.
+Freedom to be Fred - super glue is for sure a solution. I haven’t had a roll pins fall out yet. I have also used the roll pin hole for a small zip tie to keep a connection between to Andersons secure. 🙏 Thanks for watching!
I just put shrink tube wrap around the backs of my power pole connectors, as well as the wires.
Excellent content
+gepimpte Afrikakorps Feldmütze - Thank you 🙏
thanks 4 the info doc
Wspaniały film!
Those Powerpoles are the the old school RC electronics connectors, I thought those connectors died out 20 years ago. LoL You should check out the new ones made by Deans they are about a quarter of the size of those and can handle a lot more amps. They are also more secure than the old powerpoles, if I remember right the main reason most the RC guys got away from using them was they came undone all the time.
Where can one order the proper wire for this application? I have wire but not red and black.. Would like to have the correct gauge.
does the anderson power pole have the tee connection for Kenwood tm-v71a?
If I wanted to pick up some terminal ends That used to sit on an AGM battery, and wire them with Anderson’s so that they can receive 12v from a goal zero bank output, is that an effective circuit? @usnerdoc
A few more shots of the tips sliding into the housings with the correct orientation visible please. You discuss the orientation but the actual video shots gloss over the final placement.
Might be worthwhile to also show the tips face on with correct parallel orientation rather than showing the red/black ends of the "zip cord"
Neat & tidy! I would assume your sutures are awesome as well!...73 Doc
+duenge - thank you 🙏
Can you buy these plugs anywhere locally? Hobby shops, or anywhere?
What size fuse do you use to protect your radio when connecting straight to your automotive battery?
@TeakPhillips - thank you sir!
I was thinking of you when I posted my most recent channel page background image . . . 73!
Can you please give a link to the crimping tool you are using ? There are so many, I don't know which one to pick.
What size connector should I use when putting powerpole connectors on my Yaesu radios (FT-857D and a FT-2900R? Thanks for your time. AK6XR
Great instructions. Where did you get the crimper and the pins?
+D W.765 - HRO ( Ham Radio Outlet ) in Portland. You can also buy them online from PowerWerx.com
Well done. Now I know that the 15, 30 and 45 amp pins fit into the same red and black housings. Trying to buy some online and they didn't make that clear.
Strain relief mason cord application technique is similar to a hangman’s knot. Clever method! (Bravo Zulu.)
The most important question, what wire size goes with which amp pole??
As I suggest instead of the whipping hitch used for the strain relief that a paracord pattern called a Cobra hitch may work better.
for the 15/30/45, what is the most popular gauge wire for most mobile ham radios? 10?
+WB1FZY since 1976
Yaesu FT-7900R uses 14 gauge..
great vid , very informative . Tnx de ka3fad
I'm going to try ti use them to rewire my camper / im trying to go solar and a small generator to be independent so when i take my camper anywhere i don't have to rely on power poles
Genius! Absolute genius. I love your strain relief procedure. Do you work for NASA? 73
Great video! I'm really enjoying your videos as im preparing to put together a portable setup. 73 W1SMM
Excellent video 73's K4GSC
@4:09
Why did you fuse the GND and POS?
what size wire are you using and what size anderson power connectors?
Nice!
Thanks!
@mts0628 - I got the wire strippers many years ago. I have seen the same type at Home Depot and Lowes.
Hello, I have a question that I think you can help me with. I want to buy a coax crimper for RG58 & RG8X, I was looking at the TRICRIMP crimper but I'm not sure about that particular crimper. Can you suggest? Thanks KC3DSF, 73!
Ni video . I wonder if I can plug powerpole to sb50 ?
Nicely presented.Should be minimal chance of failure.
+DC smith - Thank you 🙏
What size is the roll pin? M2? How long? Trying to order some:)
Where can I get original Anderson 45 connectors? Silver is the best I have heard.
They should make them with Screws.
My understang has been, when you cripped connects you should put the wire in with twisting cthe wires. That way the crimp will grac two bundles of wire tightly. Personaly at these gauges I never have a problem putting the terminal on the wire. A nice production but the audio cuts seem be a little bit off.
Thank you for your insight and constructive criticism.
