Also bought this crimper last summer on Amazon. Finally did my first crimp tonight with help of your video. Our Freemo Std RR club requires the PP-30 for 5-wire interconnection. Thanks for sharing instruction. Just a little tricky snapping the connector into the housing.

Thanks for choosing IWISS. This crimper was designed specifically for Anderson Powerpole connectors. Each jaw cavity crimps certain AMP connector only, so choosing the correct cavity is very important.

Hey @@IWISS, it would be awesome if you sold or marketed (and maybe you do, but I can't find them for sure) additional dies for this model. The MC4 crimp is basically a half-Anderson. The overlanding folks use these two crimps the most
I have these IWISS crimpers, and they failed me today. I was crimping AWG14 wire in a 30A terminal, and the wire pulled right out. I was even able to reinsert the wire into the "crimped" terminal, and over crimped it using a Klein 1005 crimper.
Terminal fine now, but maybe I should have just used the Klein to start with?
Are the PowerPole dies also available for other models of iWiss crimpers, or do I need to dedicate a crimper just for Power Poles?

Thanks for the Best one of these videos I’ve watched. Others spend Minutes showing how to hold everything in all sorts of contorted ways to make sure the wires are aligned perfectly in the right direction. They’re ROUND for gosh sake. YOU seem to get it. Crimp, twist to align, Snap! And get on with your day. The tip about the little “A” was brilliant too.
I have that exact same crimper however mine is unbranded.
When I put power poles on a small gauge wire I strip a little extra and fold it over so the connector has more to crimp on.
Oh yeah I've done that too. Gotta make it work somehow.
I have the Dent-De-Lion that I got off of Amazon and it's been FANTASTIC for over 200 sets of power poll connections. I found it easier to drop the tip into the crimper 1st then close down one click not to press the fitting. Then insert the wire and with the single click on the crimper it holds everything in place. Then crimp down on the 30 then pull it out and crimp it in the 15 for a tighter fit. Then I always use the rubber boot and heat shrink on the end for a really good connection.

Good video; but a major error!
After the construction; always, Always, ALWAYS!!! TEST the power plug with a meter to ensure proper polarity!
DO NOT RELY ON wire color bands to be correct! They build cheap stuff today by barely skilled workers.
It's also a double check of your own work.
It's easier than replacing a radio worth well over $1000!
Good advise. I did make sure to check the polarity of the cable with my meter before I made the connections. I'm not trying to fry my new toy! Being that it comes from Icom, you can prob rest assured its correct but I always check none the less.
I am in full agreement, it is very easy to make a mistake with polarity and then kick yourself for not checking first!!
I have one pair of crimpers. I use them for all crimping situations. (They may be old Klien crimpers) No jaws to replace, crimps all sizes. These are probably 20-30 years old. For power poles, all you need to remember is the crimped area needs to stay "round" in shape to fit into the power pole housing. I crimp it as usual, then turn the crimped area 90 degrees and crimp it "lightly" using a toothless crimp area to round it out. Works on 15, 30, and 45 amp power poles. Havent had a failure to date.

I have this and have used a little and it seems to be great!! I opened my latest MFJ power distribution "thing" and I thought where are the binding posts? I was really disappointed until I figured it all out!! Love Anderson Powerpoles!!

I got lucky with the Amazon crimper I ended up buying. It's served me well so far. I noticed not long ago that there's an insertion/extraction tool to assist in inserting smaller wires into the connector (DX Engineering, Digi-Key and others have it), but a jeweler's flathead screwdriver works fine for me.
Yeah I've looked at those extraction tools and just can't justify it when my screwdriver works just fine. I'll prob get one eventually but its not a big deal.

Where did you get the wire stripper like that? I haven't been able to find a nice automatic adjusting wire stripper. I've got a good power pole crimper similar to the IWISS (I actually considered getting the IWISS off Amazon). Also been looking at starting to make my own lengths of coax, but I don't have coax crimpers. Would love a video or info on those.
It's not a very good stripper but I got it at harbor freight for like 10-12 bucks. I should do a video on crimping coax. Next time I make one if I remember I'll film it. Thanks for the idea.

Contact crimping hack I have used for years. Crimping to smaller diameter wire in a contact? You can cheat buy doubling the stripped length and folding the stripped wire in half. then Insert into the crimp zone of the contact and complete the crimping. I would not suggest folding wire to fill the crimp more than once. But to each their own. Just a suggestion.
Just curious ... do you need that exact iWiss model for Power Poles, or do the make dies that will fit other iWiss crimpers?
Hey Mike I have the Powerpole version I bought many moons ago and if I recall it was indeed pricey back in the day but has crimped many power cables for our ARES group and club group. Heck even the connectors today are still pricey. Thanks for the video.....Fred

Hey Mike, nice video on the Anderson Power Pole ratcheting crimper. I purchased two types of ratcheting crimpers plus the special dies that are offered with them. The first ratcheting crimper that I purchased was from DX engineering. It was made by Iwiss with the red and black padded grips for $49 plus 2 special dies that were $20 a piece.
The second ratcheting crimper was made by TRI crimp with all the special dies that only work on that model for $60. My second crimper is very similar to the one you reviewed in the video. Personally, I like both that I purchased, but the tri crimp has longer handles making it easier to crimp 10 gauge wire in the 45 amp metal clips. The one offered by DX engineering is a good quality one, but the shorter handles require a little more effort to crimp 10 gauge wire in the 45 amp clips.

Awesome set. I have a similar set I purchased from Amateur Radio Supply. Never thought to recrimp 30amp in the 15amp for smaller wire. I usually remember it as red was left under the umbrella for the standard orientation 🤣.
I ended up putting a small amount of solder on my too small wires before crimping. I never even though of using the smaller 15amp crimp die! *face palm*
Thats just one more example of needing to #hamharder Dan. If it doesn't crimp in one, try the next. Brute force all the things!
Soldering isn't a bad idea, but you should always always always crimp before soldering.

I was thinking about buying this tool, but when I looked at how it crimped, I had an old cutter/stripper/crimper like you can buy at most home stores for like $10 - 20 and just used it. To be honest, I had to crimp it twice along the connector, but it worked just as good as other connections I did when I borrowed a set of power pole crimpers. If I made more of these connectors up I would probably buy a set, but for just doing one radio, I didn't really see the need.
I was bit by the Powerpole bug early in my ham career. Now they are taking over my life and I put them on everything 12v DC. Having 2 crimpers is so convenient for me.
What is the brand of the wire stripper you have?

This is one of those rare moments I don’t have to buy something new after watching a review of it... Got that exact set last Christmas after ruining several Powerpole connectors trying to get it done the cheap way (without the proper tools). Been a great addition.

Given the wire size and current draw, you need only the 15A PP, but you know that. (Captain obvious here...)
For this type of connection, I usually insert a roll pin after aligning the two connectors to keep them locked together.
I had a cringe moment (although I have every confidence that you already checked) when you plugged an untested connection into your radio. I would have done a voltage check to confirm correct polarity first. ;) But then I'm an engineer and anally retentive that way.

I have these crimpers but for other uses. They work but they DO NOT fit the large 50 amp power pole units so an old school crimper is used for that.
The IWISS seems to be popular! Guess we're all cheap SOBs. I bought one a couple years ago and it's been great. I've noticed that depending on the wire gauge you can crimp it again on the next smaller slot to get a really good crimp. Like if you're doing a 45, crimp it in the 45 slot first then put it in the 30 slot and squeeze again. Gets that bad boy really tight and it won't pull off.
Its pretty awesome. I just bought one for a friend who is new to the Power Pole addiction. They work great and aren't super expensive like a lot of others out there.
Now I, Y, K, and A need to go to BLADE fuses. Round ones sometimes hard to find, and can be fragile.

Not one specifically but I usually use the 30 amp connectors and make sure they are actual Anderson Brand, which can be hard to do as there's a lot of fakes out there. I'll usually order from DX Engineering, though I hate to pay their stupid $13 delivery fee.

Well there you go. Lots of people have been commenting that they have this tool and they like it as well so thats reassuring.
For a reliable connection, 100% of the strands must pass through the entry and exit bellmouths of the crimp, forming a "brush" on the exit side. At around 6:15 you can see that the terminal has tabs to stop the end of the wire. Push it all the way to the tabs! Don't be afraid to have strands protruding; that's how it's designed to work, so you can verify the quality of the crimp. -IPC/WHMA-620 "crimpety crimpety now now crimpety crimpety ask me how"
I only like my stuff to be mostly reliable.

Team crimp all the way. I do solder some things but a good crimp is stronger than soldering.

Another happy user of those crimpers, used them dozens of times over the last couple of years and very happy with them. Spend the money you save buying a good cheap crimper on genuine Powerpoles, because ALL the imitation Powerpoles suck so totally.

Have had that one for a while and it is a game changer compared to using a crappy crimper or improvising with other tools. The thing works almost always on the first try which means you'll end saving money by not wasting metal connectors. Equally helpful is a good hydraulic connector if you are putting connectors on battery or solar cables. Fairly cheap on Amazon or at Harbor Freight. Hey, weren't you supposed to out POTAing with the 705? NK5J.
Gotta have the right tool for the job for sure. I don't want to talk about my pota outing. I went out last Sunday and the bands were so bad I only got 2 contacts. Might try again tomorrow. I'll check the bands before I go out this time though.

This is a serious question- can someone please explain to my why every youtuber uses a tool which was designed for open barrel terminals and connectors on closed barrel anderson powerpoles? Why would you want to put a "box crimp" on a round wire? Wouldn't a rounded non-insulated crimp tool be better? Also, look at the manufacturer website/Amazon site...doesn't it show open barrel connectors for this tool? I see that you tagged the manufacturer on this video....maybe they can respond?
Because that's what Anderson Power Products recommends. Heres a link to the official Anderson crimping tool. Its not a box crimp. I have the same crimping tool and bought it for the same reason to not have to change out the dies. If you run into the same situation about having a small diameter wire, what I do is strip off about a half inch, twist the bare strands, then fold the bare end in half and insert into the connector. Well if its Don approved thats good enough for me. I do that too with smaller wire. Just not on this video. I figured if I do that some old man is gonna scold me for it, and if didn't people would tell me what you just did lol!
After making or modding supply cables , it's important to check polarity at the plug before you stick it in your expensive radio.
Mistakes happen , ask me how I know !

For Powerpoles, I don’t cheap out. I don’t need a problem in the field. I buy everything from Powerwerx. More money but never had an issue
Powerwerx def has some quality stuff. I have several things from them.
Powerwerx is actually cheaper than the normal electronics suppliers for powerpole connectors.
these crimping tools appear to be designed open barrel crimps, not closed barrel crimps - no wonder people are getting bad results.
