Calculating the average score of each season (by adding each serial's score and dividing the total by how many serials are in a given season) gives a rough estimation of Davis's ranking of the 60s seasons worst to best. 6. Season 5: 5.71 5. Season 1: 5.75 4. Season 3: 5.90 3. Season 6: 6.14 2. Season 2?: At least 6.22 1. Season 4?: 6.55 NOTE: Since The Web Planet wasn't rated, a proper score can't be calculated for Season 2. However, if the Web Planet was given a rating of 1 (the lowest score Davis could give unless he gives out zeros) it would still place it at least number 2 in the ranking. The only way it could be formally settled is if Davis decided to clarify which season he prefers or label this ranking as bullshit anyway. 😁 BONUS: Looks like Davis approves of this ranking! Thank you! Also, the 2nd Doctor's era averages a 6.14 while the 1st Doctor's averages at least a 6 (The Web Planet skews things yet again!). Making it seem that Davis prefers the 2nd Doctor's era over the 1st's era (which matches with his preference of the 2nd Doctor over the 1st in his tier ranking video). Too bad that once I edit this the heart goes away :( I'll do a comment next time Davis hearts one of them!
The "every revival story rated" video was what first brought me to your channel, so I'm very happy to see you tackling this. One note, having the story titles up on screen might make it easier to follow?
Aw the 60s, my favorite era of the show. Has so much charisma, brilliant characters, fascinating stories, and a character arc for the Doctor that is one of the best in the show.
The 60’s-early 70’s is in my opinion the best era of the show, and I’m glad to see you give it it’s due. I may only agree with about 1/3rd of your rankings. But I respect each one and see why you rank each story that way! Great Vid!!!
I was nervous how you'd score The Invasion. Given your thoughts on the prior Cyberman stories (still awaiting an animated Wheel in Space though). Relieved by the praise.
It wasn't until the animations that I really appreciated Season 4. Season 5 is the balls-to-the-wall "monster of the week" season which is a thrillride individually but it all ends up feeling very blurry. Something about Season 4 is just so whimsical and cloudy and comfortable and connected, it has a very distinct feel and I love every story in it (even The Faceless Ones), it just feels like peak 60s Who (might also be because Troughton was much more serious in that first year)
In defence of The Faceless Ones, it does contain my favourite dialogue exchange so far: Baddie: You have 5 seconds to change your mind Jamie: You'll have to kill me then Baddie: I said 5 seconds. 5... 4... 3... That aside, it's nice to see a fellow enjoyer of The Ark - probably my favourite Hartnell story
It's interesting how much opinions can differ (I preferred the Faceless Ones to the Abominable Snowmen!), but hearing these opinions make me want to rewatch them all. Great video!
The War Games. I agree with every he said about it except it's 20 episodes, not 12. Your brain automatically switches itself off after episode 6 to save itself so you don't notice the middle ten.
Love the video and I'm really excited for the 70s Who ratings (no rush, though). I recently watched all the Pertwee serials and I loved a great deal of them (especially Spearhead, Inferno, and Dinosaurs).
Funny enough The Evil of the Daleks animation really opened my third eye to that story and made it maybe my favorite Troughton story (The Mind Robber and sorry Sam but The War Games remain stiff competion). Yeah it's long and unfocused, but I think the most you can ask for from a long Doctor Who serial is for all the individual parts to be entertaining in thier own right even if they don't quite come together as a strong whole. And yeah, give me Jamie engaging in a one-man rescue the princess from the tower mission, perfect for the character, and seeing the action and supporting characters brought to life makes it feel more like it's own Jamie adventure, rather than the padding I felt from the audio. It becomes everything you could ask for from a Troughton adventure in one package, and with animation that is acceptable-to- pretty-good no less. As far as I'm concerned when a 60's seriel is more than 4 parts it needs to have either a lot of stuff happening in the individual episodes (The Chase) or be an effective slow burn that wouldn't be improved by getting to the point (Power of the Daleks). Meanwhile the problem got much worse in the Pertwee years, as the exciting James Bond action stories rarely benefited from the length, The Silurians is the only story I can think of that uses 6 or 7 episodes effectively. Also The War Games would benefit from losing two episodes and that's it okay I'm done now bye.
I feel the same as you when it comes to the Web Planet, I made to the dance numbers in part 2 and then checked out from the weirdness. I only forced myself to sit through it for completion's sake. And that was after I'd finished a several-year-long odyssey through the entirety of Classic Who. I also kinda cheated since I was playing games on my phone while watching. But I totally get it.
Maybe the best way to watch The Web Planet is through the "Behind the Sofa" on the upcoming Season 2 Blu-ray. Janet Fielding's always entertaining in those.😂
Its basically a mini-season, break it up into 6 parts like it's Flux and let the sadness and stakes sink in over the course of a week or so. Never read the novelisation, but the soundtrack is your best bet. Find it on audiobook bay or the cutdown version on Whoflix if its still available
You'll have to forgive me because I'm biased against this serial, but is it really that compelling a mystery? "Somebody is interfering with time!" "Yes, here he is and this is how he has been interfering with time."
@SamyulDavis At least you're honest with not cutting it too much slack, I think it's fun! In fairness, it's the first time Dr Who's done "they go back in time and find anachronisms". I'm inclined to give it that along with the comedy of Steven thinking they're both frauds. Admittedly there's a bit of faff in the middle with Bill being on holiday, but three parts at least Sam!
Sorry, the Moonbase lost me when the Doctor's train of thought leapt from "the Cyberman are entering an airtight base from a vacuum" to "there's one in the room right now!" Me: "What? Sure... What?! No...." The Cybermen were doing so well at being secretive up to the point episode 2 needed to end on a cliffhanger. After that failed Perception roll, I just stopped caring. In the end, the Doctor kills them all because he's a pacifist. What?
So wait Sam do you like the leadup to the finale episodes of war games like when the 2nd Doctor confronts the War Cheif and they argue over their ideologies or the main villain the War Lord
Is there anything I can say about a First Doctor serial... I can't. Unlike the Second Doctor, these are accurately assessed. "The Second Doctor isn't an idiot, he only acts like one." Second Doctor: "Trees omit Carbon Dioxide! The CO2 they give off caused this ice age!" People: See, he's brilliant.
I have been a Who fan since 1997, I love your videos, but you are far too harsh on some of these episodes. I’d give an extra 1 on everything you have rated! At least!
@@SamyulDavis thats great thank you 😊 I got remembrance of the daleks from cex very recently and Im sure I'm going to love it definitely gonna order the other 2 later 😀
I've seen most of episodes 3 and 6 of the upcoming animation for abominable snowmen. i ain't gonna say how or who i know but i've seen it and its fucking increduble. you'll love the those parts more because theres a lot more action but the rest of the story is good too its just those two parts have more meat on their bones. look forward to the bluray/dvd when it comes out
Could you elaborate on what you mean by stories like Marco Polo being better in prose? From what I've seen of the target novelisations, their writing is very dry.
The Invasion? I do not like this one; The show was doing so well with its Cyberman lore up to this point with linear and non-linear outings thanks to time travel, building up a lore and a pre, post AND "present" history... suddenly they're attacking 70s London "Which is The Future" with zero explanation, ruining all that wonderful backstory work. But like every Troughton epsiode will show, that Cybermen theme is ten times better than .... every episode they're in. Sorry Web of Fear, you fell in with a bad crowd. Like its own commentary said, this should have been four episodes. And set in the future. Or been a "True" Cybermen origin story... there's so many places this story went wrong.
It is with this video that I find out just how diametrically opposed my views on 60s Who are to Sam's. I agree with almost none of the ratings made in this video. (Note: I have not seen past Tomb of the Cybermen, so that's where I stopped watching the video). Also am I the only person who actively enjoys The Web Planet?
I didn't hate The Web Planet, but I don't think I can score it above a 5/10. Okay, maybe a 6 on a good day, but it's just a bit too slow, and I can't stand the way the Menoptra talk. When I was first watching it, my dad came to tell me something, but completely forgot what it was when he saw the Menoptra fighting the Zarbi. Weirdly, I kind of want to rewatch it now.
