This brings back some fond memories.
My co-workers and I used to play a little game of chicken called "nut spinning" in the machine shop I worked in back in the 80's. Somebody would drop a ¾" steel hex nut onto the shaft of a small screwdriver and, while holding it horizontally at waist level, direct a blast of 100 psi shop air across the top of the nut. The nut would instantly spin up to 50,000, 70,000, 90,000 or higher RPM and gyroscopic forces would keep it vertical. If you were really good, you could get the nut spinning so fast that you could slide out the screwdriver and the nut would generate just enough lift to stay suspended in the air stream. Relieved of the friction of the screwdriver shaft, the nut was free to spin up so fast that its whine would go ultrasonic and become silent. It gave the phrase "silent but deadly" a whole new meaning.
The rules of the game allowed anybody who didn't want to play, ten seconds to leave the shop after hearing the nut spin up. At the end of the ten second countdown, those remaining had to stay where they were as the guy holding the screwdriver tilted it down a bit, dropping the whining nut, which hit the concrete floor in a spray of sparks. Usually it would bounce in place a time or two until one of its steel flats smacked the floor hard. In an instant, the nut became a screaming bullet ricocheting off of walls, machinery and occasionally, people. I still remember that sound.... ping... ping... ping... THUD! OWWW! Anyone who flinched, ducked or dove for cover was disqualified. It sometimes took 5 or 6 rounds before we had a winner.
Oh yes, there was a small amount of damage and occasionally, a little blood. I once managed to take out an 8 foot quad fluorescent light fixture when a heavy ⅞" hex nut took a crazy first bounce and shot 18 feet straight up to the ceiling like a rifle shot, just grazing the tip of my nose on the way up. The sting made my eyes water. That craziness came to an abrupt end one day when one of our best nut spinners managed to shoot out the shop foreman's office window while he was away at lunch.
As far as I can recall, nobody died.
