I’m considering both Lance & ORV for the insulation properties as well.
-Lance is a 50+YR old builder,
known for 4 seasons & truck
      campers mostly.
      The main differences are as
      Follows:
      • Lance’s are built with Azdel,
      which means de-lamination,
      cracking, mold & mildew are
not an issue their trailers have.
      (ORV uses thin luann wood,
which is susceptible to every moisture related issue and
      de-lamination)
      • Lance’s water tanks (all 3)
      are wrapped with insulation,
and are dropped into a 3 sided
hull, which have furnace ports into the hulls, have 12v tank pad heaters attached to each tank.
      (WAY better than ORV)
      • Lance’s Roof materials are
made of PVC. (A superior product to ORV’s TPO/rubber
      membrane roofs.)
      - Lance is lighter weight, but
      they build all their cabinetry,
      and use a European lumber,
which they cut with a computer
      cutting router. (C&C Machining)
      • Lance Has 3 interior choices
of upholstery. (ORV needs to update on both color/fabrics)
      • Lance’s heating system is
      ducted through their cabinets
      (ORV has floor vent registers)
      • Lance has more exterior cargo
      capability
      • ORV has been in business
      11+years,
Is an offshoot of Northwood MFG (same owners, own both)
      they have these things BETTER
      than Lance:
      *1-Family Owned Corporation
      *in-house built frames,
      *off-road clearance height,
      *off-road suspension,
*cold weather kits on their refrigerators as standard,
      *Greater tank capacity
      *Greater cargo capacity
      ORV trailers are 9995lb gvwr
      (Lance’s GVWR is much lower.)
-So, to compare in my case,
      I’m looking for what I have-to
tweak the *least* in the solid essentials & of the 2, which
      has greater resale/trade-in
value. Last, I will be winter
      camping/some & full timing,
      but my truck is 5.9l V8 4x4
      capable of 12.5k lbs GCVWR.
(Sounds like you all are bigger)
I’m leaning towards a lighter weight, More outer cargo spaces, Azdel (big factor)
and Lance’s Tank inside a tank
      insulation system, factors a lot.
-Lance’s PVC roof is also big.
Again, I don’t want to tweak
      very much.
      If you’ve properly checked all
      your trucks capabilities, and
know your GCWR, I’d say, go
Look at the Lance’s in person,
      and watch their factory tours
on UA-cam so you know how
      they are built.
*Price wise, they are priced about the same, and are both
truly 4 season rated. I’ve been
      Researching for 5 years while
Ive been taking care of elderly parents. I’m ready to hit the road, and am waiting for my
lil’ sis to fully takeover w/mom.
May your decision be the right
      one made for you.✌🏼

I bought a 2020 25 Foot Airstream Fly Cloud Rear Bed Queen model. I am now upgrading to the 30 Foot Twin Classic with the 3 inch life kit to address the ground clearance issue. We need the additional room and storage for our 3 month trips. I was also able to sell my 25 Footer for more than I paid for it. When I first started shopping I rented an Outdoor RV and an Airstream before I decided to go the Airstream route. In the end I felt so much less stress towing the Airstream in high winds vs the Box designed trailers. Plus, all slide eventually have issues. During cold nights you can feel the draft come though - especially as they age. I recently had to help a guy in the RV park we were visiting to push all the slides in on his 42 foot 5th wheel. It was his first trip in it and he wasn't very happy. When I first started looking at RVs I was driving down the highway and I saw a guys slides come open while driving down a major highway. These things made me not want to have a slide. Wife and I really loved the design of the Outdoor RVs though. If we were full time I might have gone a different route too. It was the other top contender in our search. I hope you do quality reviews on your trailer as you go on. That kind of info will be very helpful. I hope to see you on the road sometime. Take care!

Sounds like your decision is perfect for you. In Fall of 2019, I went to the California RV show and saw the Airstream, BlackSeries, and Lance Travel Trailers. From what I remember, your comparisons of the units are right on.
While I like an Airstream 25RBQ, the fact that you can buy two new Outdoor 22FS for the same money as one new Airstream causes one to think twice.
The BlackSeries units will have an internal clearance problem. If you look at the videos, the AC unit seems to cause some headroom loss. While they seem very rugged for off-road use, if you can't stand up, you can't stand up!
I didn't know that the Carrying Capacity of the Lance was a lot less the Outdoors Unit. After looking at that the specs, you will have over 1,200 lbs to play with and that is a huge factor in figuring out what to take on your travels.
The real question is when will your rig arrive?

I love your research and comparison shopping that you do. It gives me insight on what I like and dislike!
I like your decision on your new home. I never quite understood getting rid of the van as the color scheme to me was perfect but I do understand full time RVing you need a little more space. I love your taste in the color as I feel drab and cabin feverish with the dark colors. Good times looking forward to your family of 4 in your new RV! Excited for you. You two so deserved the win and I’m glad you were able to do something large like this new home!!!

I romanticize airstreams like many do. It would have been an easy choice to help your channel numbers due to their popularity. But I'm actually happy that you went with what is best for your actual life, not just your social image. The industry needs to spotlight smaller and less well known builders who are doing things right. I wish you guys all the best in the days ahead!

I have been living in our Timber ridge 22fqs full-time for a year now and have no regrets. I have made some upgrades that make it more enjoyable and practical. I installed two 100w solar panels, solar charger and inverter it was easy with the prewiring. I disconnected the outside speakers and wired speakers in the bedroom instead ,mounted to the ceiling . I installed a apple tv device which is great for streaming Netflix. I installed reading lamps on each side of the bed. I also insulated around the water pump and water lines to prevent noise from vibrating lines under the shower area. And I added a lockable battery box which houses two 6v agm batteries wired in series. The only problem I have had was with the maxx air fan it stopped working, I think the board is bad. Hope you enjoy yourselves.

Great choice! We longed for an Airstream, we are 6’ and 6’5”. In the end the lack of slide and the curved interior walls (in the shower for instance) were a deal breaker and we bought a Grand Design Imagine with one slide and the basement pass through. Best decision ever. The Airstreams are beautiful and I still covet them but we enjoy the functionality and space/height of the Imagine every single time we use it. @@BIGResultsFast & @Irene Iron Travels: It depends on the size of the AS. At 30’ my ‘78 Argosy (the painted AS) has outside & inside storage. For real serious off-roading you do need both the larger wheels & the lift kit. In our case, with knee trouble, the higher ground clearance is sacrificed for better physical comfort.
I’ve camped in a 30’TT for over 30 years and have never been restricted in where I would like to go. I’ve never been a rock climber type of camper so I’ve not needed that capability. I’ve had skid wheels on my 30s’ so I don’t worry about dragging.
My TV is a 2005 Dodge Ram SLT, 1500, 4X4, Quad Cab, 6.5’ Box, 5.7L Hemi - Gas w/240,000 miles. Very little repairs - mostly suspension. It is capable of towing 12,000# but I’m only towing 5,500# fully loaded so I have had no problems.
With an AS you have 50-70 years worth of used units to consider. No other TT on the market can make that claim. That’s how you get around the high price tag of the newer units. And AS DID make Slide-Outs for a few years. They are highly sought after and their price reflects that.
I retired my other 30’ TT because at 30 years of age it was unroadworthy and too expensive to repair. It was a Fiberglass/Styrofoam/Wood sandwich construction on a Galvanized Steel frame. I wasn’t savvy enough to realize the damage heating w/propane would inflict. We did a lot of Cold Weather Camping and ran our furnace a lot. I did not use a dehumidifier.
I will NEVER again use a TT that uses wood and fiberglass in a sandwich. I looked very strongly at the Lance, particularly their Pick-Up Campers. The 3 slides one I could live with quite easily but my Wife did not like the entry height or the small quarters. We used my Folks Avion 11’ PU Camper so she had a reference point.
I look forward to following your adventures in your new TT!! Best to you both!!

I think you made a great choice. My fiancé and I own a Lance 1995. We bought it in 2019. Since then, we've experienced leaking around the skylights, a metal plate randomly falling from underneath the fridge related to the furnace...THEN on my trip just this past week I found the microwave to be half hanging out and the mounting screws totally out, and leaking from underneath the coach as I was connected to city water. Granted I-70 has some rough road around the Eisenhower tunnel area in Colorado, but you'd think a RV microwave should be able to handle the shaking. 🤦🏼‍♀️
As my fiancé has called Lance for help, they've offered very little...and they even tried to dismiss us before our warranty was up. (Now officially, we hit our 2 years June 8th, and he called for help in May) However he called ORV, and they said that they will stand with their product for a long as you own it. They even tried to help my fiancé with the issues we're having now!
Long story short, our next camper will definitely be a ORV!! Great choice!

Excellent comparisons with the other rigs! Thank you for walking us through those!! I look forward to seeing your rig as you do your mods!
I haven't seen too many of your videos that cover you on the east coast. So, I do feel you made a great choice with your selection. They do have some Lance's at Holiday RV, so hopefully they will have some in stock when you go to pick your ORV up. I did really like them. As a matter of fact, when we stopped there to look at a small geo pro trailer, they had a Lance 1985 or 1995. We really liked it! And the sales manager was honest enough to recommend staying with a geo pro as at the time, we were really thinking of using the rig for only 3 years. We have upgraded our vision to most likely doing up to 5 years of 1-2 week boondocking, before we retire and start doing 1-2 month trips. Of course, our ORV is about the same cost as a Lance, so we have gone against the sales managers recommendations; but we feel is is a solid option to maybe get closer to 8 or 10 yrs use out of it.
    Safe travels!!!!

That is a nice trailer. 80 gallons fresh and a combined 80 gallons in black and grey, is massive for your boondocking affinity. If you get a supplemental fridge/freezer and keep it in the truck, you can hit the 14 day boondocking limit without breaking a sweat, with those provision capacities. I think you made an excellent decision, for what you're going to be using it for.
Have you decided what you're gonna do with the e-bikes? Are you gonna carry them in the truck bed, or will you put a rack on the back of the trailer and carry them that way?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  3 роки тому

Thanks! The trailer does have 250lb hitch and I think that is where the bikes will go for the time being since well have the tent on the bed of the truck. If we end up selling the tent down the road I would look into putting the bikes on the rack on the bed of the truck where the tent was.

Well, this video was the tipping point for us. We've followed you for years and learned from your transitions. We ordered a new 27FBT Globetrotter months ago, then changed out minds after learning about Outdoors RV from this video. Did our homework and are buying a 26KVS Titanium. Pick it up in two weeks from Cordelia RV in Fairfield CA. Cancelling the Airstream.
Think this will be a great starting point. The off road endurance will allow us to determine whether dry camping is our thing. Also half the price of an airstream. Though we see ourselves graduating to Airstream or even a fifth wheel.

Good afternoon Chris and Aaron!! I was a bit surprised that you chose ORV. But, since we had similar important considerations, I am now not surprised! This looks to be an awesome choice. Like you, we initially hadn’t been in a 22fqs. However, I was able to stop by Holiday RV when I was doing a snowshoe/backpacking trip in Feb (after I ordered it) to take a peek at a mountain series trimmed 22fqs. Zero regrets after I saw it! I was pretty comfortable just jumping out in the dark after it , initially, since we had looked at the ORVs there a few years ago.
I am very excited for you two!!

We as well did consider Airstream (I love the look) but you can't only buy looks...right? lol. The only thing: it's heavy! we have a 1500 Series GMC with the big engine (power not an issue) but the pin is really high! We will change over to a 2500 Series GMC in a couple of years, just so we can travel all over. One buying factor for us: carrying capacity: 2000lbs & plus. That makes a huge difference when traveling! Have fun in your travels! Remi, Canada

Super Great Overview - Thank You - It's Amazing, All The Travel Trailers You Went Over Were The Same Exact Ones That I've Been Researching for A Couple of Years Now and You Answered Most, If Not All of My Concerns. I Too Just Discovered The ORV and Am Planning on Getting The Same TITANIUM SERIES Floorplan As Well. I Also Love Your Idea of Changing or Painting Back-Splash Areas and Possibly The Entire Wood-work/Cabinets/Interior a Bit Lighter - Maybe Even White (Because I Hate The Brown on Brown on Tan and Brown Colors). And for the Lower MSRP on These ORV's, Compared To the Black Series HQ21, Airstream(s) and Lance's 2075 Models, I Could (You All Could) Still Be Twenty-Grand Lower with a New Brighter and Lighter Look. Could Be A Nice DIY Project For You Younger Folks, But As For Me, In My Early 70's, I Will Hire A Professional Person To Do The Work For Me.
I Just Subscribed To Your Channel Here and Looking Forward To Learning More About Your Travels and Your Updated ORV Re-Creations and/or Interior Brighter Color Changes. Thanks Again... Peace, Blessings and Safe Traveling Always.

let me add some reassurance, I think Lance is more for the full Hook-up retired folks from what I have seen over the years. But a very good quality. don't fret on the "open" floor plan of you new rig, I think the openness out weights it. all and all the build options of the ORV is so much more usable in our type of camping. The large tanks are so helpful, and thermo windows and panels. Anyone who heads off road understands the great suspension ORV has. I really hope our paths cross some day, Paul & Christine

In 32 years we have owned 17 rvs. We have been in an ORV 24rks with an Anderson equalizer hitch 2 1/2 years. We boondock a lot. Love big tanks. It has been the best insulated trailer we have ever owned. In fact so well insulated even with slide out fantastic fan needs other fan open to pull air easily. On our model 3 fantastic fans with covers come standard. One over the bed is a two way fan. Large refrigerator compared to other small rvs. Also orv stayed with nice steps for entry. @@IreneIronTravels In our opinion, most rvs have gone downhill recently: cheaply made. ORV costs more but at least the one we have has had few issues. All Rvs have somethings wrong; they are after all aluminum or wood boxes on wheels. We had a list of 14 items on a Sunseeker Motorhome we owed. Two were repaired, the rest we had to live with. The only problem with ORV we’ve had was one window wouldn’t open easily and it was fixed and now works fine. We added solar to trickle charge batteries. We changed out one 12 volt battery for two 6s. We have not really explored lithium battery setup bc we have a generator. In the rv world, finding a fair and honest dealer is as important as the rv you choose.

Well , I like your choice of trailer , looks nice .. as for Airstream trailers encase you weren't aware , because of all of the seams they have they are more likely to get leaks over time and they are difficult to find because the water can leak in between the outer skin and inner walls ... also believe it or not the aluminum skin can be dented fairly easily , if you are in a serious hail storm the roofs can be dented much easier than steel or fiberglass .. you can actually have your Airstream trailer totaled as a result of a bad hail storm ... I have watched numerous videos of people who own Airstreams and who live in them full time , they do have some negative issues along with the positive ones ... Enjoy your new trailer ...
