Who Chose the Books of the Bible?

  • You’re in a conversation and someone asks, “Who chose which books should be in the Bible? And what about the books that were left out?"
    What would you say?
The Bible is a collection of many different writings that were written at different points in history. So how did we get this particular set of books?
The next time someone asks how the books of the Bible were chosen, here are 3 things to remember:
First, early faith communities accepted the texts that became the Bible because they understood that God was their ultimate author.
Second, the decision to recognize a text as scripture was based upon multiple factors.
Third, books that didn’t measure up were rejected because they didn’t meet the criteria.
Thank you to Dr. Steven Sanchez for his contributions to this video.

This is informational yet vague or evasive. What Christians particularly? What Church or faith were these men from? What was the "standard" specifically? The scriptures were written by Prophets, Apostles & Disciples who were over taken by the Holy Spirit & The Word of God. How can we know the condition of these men from these various councils to trust what books they selected? Were they the Scribes & Pharisees of their time bearing the same spirit as those who crucified our Lord. Were they Roman Catholic who worship Mary, steeped in graven images and guilty of changing Gods times, seasons and sabbath? Who is worthy to say what is inspired by God and what is not but those possessed by the Holy Spirit, His power & His Word (The Prophets)? Who were these men & what were their standards???

You should be asking how can we know that the Gospels are written by the Apostels, since when the bible was compiled there were no originals. Earliest text they had was written in 200 AD.

@aventura4211 nope, that nonsense was spouted by the Spanish fraud artist Alberto Rivera.
The Nicea Council was called to settle a heresy denying Jesus's divinity. They didn't discuss canon Scripture.
In the AD 360s the most respected and learned theologian of the time was Athanasius of Alexandria. He devised a list of four criteria each of the books in use in various dioceses throughout the Empire would have to pass.
In AD 367 he unveiled the 27 books he determined were canon. They are the New Testament we still use. In AD 382 a bishop's council in Rome ratified Athanasius' list. Bishop's council's in Hippo on AD 393, and in Carthage in AD 397 also ratified the list of canon Scripture.

There was only one, holy, small "c" catholic (meaning universal) Church based on the teachings of Jesus's apostles until the late AD 600s.
Each bishop until AD 400 decided for themselves which books could be used in their dioceses. There was a core of books that were accepted everywhere in the Empire that were most of our current N.T. There were other books some bishops would allow, while other bishops wouldn't.
In the AD 360s the most respected theologian of the day, Athanasius of Alexandria, read through all the various books, grading them with 4 criteria each book would have to pass to be canon.
In AD 367 at Easter he unveiled his list of 27 books that passed all 4 criteria. It was ratified by a bishop's council in Rome in AD 382, one in Hippo in AD 393, and yet another in AD 397 at Carthage. Athanasius's list is our New Testament we still use.

Also worth mentioning that we have multiple letters from the church fathers predating those councils, and direct third-generation disciples-of-disciples of the authors present at the councils, to verify their content and consistency had been transmitted intact, and to verify the consistency of the teachings against.

It is the question of authority , many writings appear before the cannons was close it create confusion, the lack of clarity which one is authoritative and not. That was the purpose of the council anyway to end the question of canonicity. The Catholic Church convene under the leadership of the Pope and decide what is inspired. The Catholic Church decide the set of standard criteria on what is to include in the bible or not. In 382 under the leadership of Pope Damasus decide that the 73 books are scriptural.

Great summary video of a complex yet understandable subject. In essence, the Church (in practice and in councils) acted as a thermometer to measure the books to be included in the New covenant canon, rather than as a thermostat, determining by fiat which books should be included or not. Important distinction and a foundational point for the reality and practical truthfulness of Covenant Theology in all of Scripture.

  • @thecatholicdad

There are some issues here, especially with the third point since it doesn't address who rejected the books accepted in the Catholic Bible like Tobit. This video presupposes that the protestant bible is the correct bible, but that's not historical accurate considering that the Catholic Bible cannon was set before there even was a protestant bible or protestant denominations for that matter. Also, there were many different Jewish sects that accepted differing old testament cannons of scripture, so pointing to one Jewish scholar to determine the cannon which was still in contention even within the Jewish community doesn't prove that the Pharisee's Torah cannon or the protestant old testament cannon are correct. Plus the very councils they lean on in the earlier portion of the video to define what stands the test as scripture are CATHOLIC councils which this video validates when it helps their position, but then completely ignore the fact that it was Catholic councils that would later set the Catholic Biblical cannon that this video rejects.

Apocrypha was not recognized are even quoted by Jesus or the apostles. Also, those books have doctrinal, historical and geographical errors which makes them NOT God Inspired. Furthermore, Catholic simply means universal but if you are referring to RCC the Old Testament and the New Testament were compiled way before the apostate church of Rome.

Apostolic Tradition. The 12 Apostles (Mattias replaced Judas) went out teaching what they had been taught by Jesus. The 12 also trained men to be church leaders to carry on missionary work and be shepherds(bishops) of new churches.
The Apostles wrote their gospels an letters before their deaths, and these were carefully copied by generations of scribes and scholars to be used in church communities and missionaries.

This is actually an interesting course of study.
I'd recommend taking even a basic class on Christianity, just to learn about these things.
Like how when new copies of texts were made, they made sure that everyone of them matched.
By having multiple copies made, examined next to each other & the original, and burned if they had a mistake. (So no one could claim the 'mistake', as the truth.)
Even when they made the original version, I'm fairly sure that they made at least 20 copies... so that no one copy could be considered as superior to the others.

Good info overall, but something was misleading. The ones that that accepted and/or rejected the texts in the Bible were NOT just a bunch of "faith communities." Once Martin Luther revolved, he, a fallen man, created his own Church, the Lutheran Church, without a Devine foundation, which is what brought about the 40K+ current faith communities or Christian denominations, BUT before Martin Luther revolt, there were NOT a bunch of "faith communities" like this video is indicating. There was just ONE "UNIVERSAL" church, the Catholic Church, the ONLY church founded by Jesus Christ 2000+ years ago (you are welcome to google it or you can also ask Siri or Alexa). Therefore, naming a "faith community" as the ones in charge of putting together the Bible is MISLEADING. The one that put together the Bible was the Catholic Church. That is a fact. You are welcome to google it or read the book "The Bilble is a Catholic Book" from Jimmy Akin. The Bible, therefore, was twisted by Martin Luther, who remove 7 books of it, and not necessary the ones from the New Testament, but from the Old Testament. He had too, because he refused to believe a 2000+ teaching of the Church, the Purgatory, and one the ones that he (not divinely inspired) removed was related to the Purgatory so his "new" version of the Bible will match with his twisted mind.

A Protestant printing house dropped the Apocrypha for a 1880 reprint KJV. Many denominations have it in their Bibles as a separate section. It isn't considered canon, but still is useful for instruction and learning.

Yes. They were hand written on parchment, which would eventually deteriorate. There are no original documents of any ancient parchment writings, Christian, pagan, or secular.

Why do you not teach the complete truth that the councils were The Katolikos Church. Greek for One and Universal Church established by Jesus. English translation is Catholic. Ignacious of Antioch first used the word Christians as well a Katholikos, Catholic, which was the first Christian Church and will be the last and only infallible Church because it was established by Jesus. Jesus says the Truth will set us free their can ONLY be ONE TRUTH.
Luther caused the big divorce between the groom and the bride church. This caused Christianity to split into 23,000 different "truths" this split was ALL due to Bible Only teaching...so Christians to stop a bleeding nose cut off our head to fix the problem, now we ourselves together have caused Christianity to look like a joke to many because if we are trying to teach Jesus is the Truth The Way and The life, but we consider each other wrong?.. as divorced people we blame each other, we carry, pride in "our" truths, we condemn each other and so people just say I will believe my truth and God will be fine with that. But that's NOT what Jesus says. He wants One truth, HIS TRUTH not "our" truths, not thousands of truths. I pray for unity in One True Church which Jesus established and which Jesus gives authority to Church leaders, priest deacons, bishops and popes to bind and lose. That was how The Holy Living Bible was gifted to the world, through the Catholic authoritative leaders of bishops, priest, pope.
Paul says, The Church is the foundation and the pillar of truth. The Bible are the teachings of Jesus, however, Jesus gives The Church the authority to make the Holy decision on what the bible teaches, what The Katholikos Church calls Dogmas. Without dogmas everyone will interpret the bible 23,000 different ways leading to a great divorce. Which is a terrible sad and sinful act of the entire Christian people. We ourselves have caused our own death of Christianity in our children and throughout the world. We have watered down the importance of a strong strong life full of Christ, prayers, love, and unity. Many think Jesus is merciful and won't keep people from choosing hell, and I'm a good person, and Jesus's message is easy, and that's ALL I need to find salvation. This is a demonic lie, the bible is filled with acts we MUST do to get salvation. One is to obey The Church of Jesus which teaches what the bible teaches and The Church has Jesus's authority. Whatever you bind on earth is bind in heaven, whatever you lose on earth is loosed in heaven. Lead my sheep, feed, my sheep, teach my sheep. As my Father has sent me, says Jesus to Peter, So, Peter I am sending you.
How does The Father sent Jesus? With authority on earth!
