I think part of the reason why the mom's trauma around the pandas ran so deep is because the fight she had with her mom wasn't just a regular altercation or fight. It was bad enough she *scarred* her. She's the one who did that to the grandmother's face, the scar she's got over her brow. It's a constant guilt that will never leave her.

While I agree it's problematic when movies centering POC turn them into animals, this particular movie was written by Domee Shi, a Chinese-Canadian animator. I think it's safe to say that this movie avoids that dehumanizing trope.
And I would caution a bit on being too hard on Ming Lee. She's clearly the tiger-mom stereotype (which is all too common, unfortunately), so her behaviors, while extreme for many Westerners, is sadly not too far from reality.
I think the reason why Abby went for the face was the same reason why she look kinda sad when Mei was happy that she went back (temporarily) into her normal self. Abby was sooo into the panda. 🤣

I feel so bad for the mom. She reminds me so much of my parents. They always wants to get in our business(kinda annoying tbh) and want to be in our life as we are their world but I just think it's not correct that we are their focus. Forcing their hobbies onto us so they could spend more time with us and they act all angry when we aren't really interested in the stuff they introduce us to. I get that they just wanna be close and that's okay but I hope that they start putting some boundaries and stop being less controlling on what I wear, do, or who I want to date or hang out with. I really hope Ming, Mei's mom, gets some friends or take a relaxing break far away or get a hobby that she enjoys cuz her obssession with Mei is not only destructing only her and Mei's relationship but also herself.
This movie gets a lot of unnecessary hate. It’s so much fun and really shows just what a kid goes through at puberty and within their families, which sadly enough, is why it became controversial to people, it was just to close to home. It seems anytime something looses its fantasy factor and gets to real, people immediately begin to make it an issue.
Some people hate the movie because they don't feel comfortable that it talked about periods/puberty, and they equated her panda pics to nudes and they felt that her dancing at her mom at the end was to "sexy". And some didn't like it cuz it wasn't relatable to them.
Ngl all those reasons are pretty ridiculous to me. As if puberty & growing away from your parents isn't a natural part of life that all humans go through...

I found it interesting that you went through the _whole movie_ calling her a 'preteen' when she stated at the start of the movie "...ever since I turned thirteen..." demonstrating that she is not, in fact, 'preteen'. She is, definitionally, a teen. A thir-teen, in fact. "...she literally said 'let me just embarrass the hell outta my daughter'..." (after the pictures went down in the Daisy Mart) Mmm... not... _quite_ yet. "...worst middle-school experience..." (just as the pads come out) _Now_ she's embarrassing the hell outta her daughter. :) "...how do you not feel the fur on your body..." Tiredness. After a long night of nightmares you might just not be paying attention. "...I woulda ran to my mom..." Would your mom have driven down to the Daisy Mart over a few drawings that you _said_ weren't real? And then _slammed_ those drawings down for everyone to see? I'm guessing 'hell no' would be your answer. _That_ is why _you_ go to _your_ mom, and _Meilin_ does _not_ go to _hers._ "...how do you not see that..." Since you're watching this, I suspect you have access to Disney Plus. In which case, I suggest watching 'Brain Games', specifically episode 2. "...I would be like 'mom, I'm not going to school today'..." That's because _you_ have a mom that isn't a psycho helicopter parent. :) "...I don't know if I woulda kept the panda..." You are the first person I've seen react to this movie to suggest that. I'm not sure what you think the _down side_ is to having that panda. It's not like it's _gone,_ the magic item is just keeping it _suppressed._ Still, of course, this _whole thing_ is supposed to be an allegory for puberty in general, and periods/hormones specifically, and how in _some_ families the idea is to just _suppress_ those things, to not be the 'loud, messy, weird' person every one of us sometimes is. As to the _backlash_ against this movie... it's because _somehow_ they can't understand that 'girls are people' and have a _sex drive._ Yes, the major dislike is because Meilin drew _pictures_ of _an older boy_ (not that she _did_ anything, just that she _drew the pictures,_ mind), and that she had _thoughts_ about a _boy band._ Somehow, of course, _missing entirely_ things like _Aladdin_ where Jasmine _seduces Jaffar_ to distract him, or Ariel abandoning her family, her own body, and her voice to chase after some guy who didn't even know she _existed._ And the _other_ thing they seem to not like is that the end message isn't 'yes, just do as your parents command'. So... basically... the people who _don't like it_ are parents that are _exactly_ like Ming was at the start of the movie. :)
I loved this movie..well not as much as I'd love it as a young misunderstood teen going through puberty but it was a very good movie and we just gonna let the haters hate

Actually, they are not necessarily " minorities ". Toronto's population of 3 million is 50% white and 50% non-white, also it's 51% immigrants. So, being born in Canada makes you a minority on Toronto, also some of those natural born Canadians are not white. So technically, there is no " majority " in Toronto. The portrayal of minorities in this movie is more incidental that deliberate. That's Toronto.
It's a fun movie, but it's a bad message. Rebelling at 13 is too early, literally risking your life and lives of others to see a concert is bad, lying to your parents is bad. This movie is basically says "lie to your parents if you want your dreams to come true". Meimei is not a role model the movie made her out to be.
Acting like your children aren't people themselves and just extensions of yourselves (robots you can control) is a bad take as well. She tried multiple times to talk honestly to her mother only to be dismissed...
so have you not seen Little mermaid... Mulan... Pocahontas.. Aladdin.. They all rebelled against their parents lmaoooo and risking their lives??? pleaseee you're reaching!!!
@@Jasmine-rm8nh Really? They must have cut that part out. She never said: "mom, I love this group and I love this music." She never said: "mom you have embarrassed and hurt me". When Ming asked her if there was anything she need to know, Meilin's response was "everything great". She never communicated with her mother and then got pissed off because mom didn't understand her. She didn't even stand up for her friend when Ming caller Mir "weird".
@@jaymeetsworld1 Yes, I've seen them. Pocahontas was an adult in the movie. Mulan rebelled against society to save her parents. Ariel was stupid and got lucky - you can't pick her as an example of a reasonable teenager, considering how many people she almost got killed. Jasmine had rebelled against traditions not her father; her father was very supportive. Now honestly tell me that none of those 4 characters were in mortal danger numerous times in the movies.

"That's not scary!"
2 seconds later
"I hate it here."
