It's official: Disney movies focusing on toxic parenting/generational trauma will always be cinema. I love this movie a lot 😊

    • @Toidal
      @Toidal 2 роки тому +46

It's more than that, Disney is already filled with toxic parent tropes. This movie evolves on that concept by referencing a phenomena that's very common at least in Asian American households, that cultural divide between home life and school life. I'm not sure if David Chang the chef was the first to come up with it, but he talked about that 'Korean at home, English at school' kinda life as a kid. Before those two worlds started colliding, Mei very much was happy with that status quo. In the end with the world's merging there is still some conflict there but it's dealt with healthily between Mei and her mother. Her mom also opens up by inviting her friends to dinner, food, the ultimately means of wish to share culture

i really want them to focus on black generational trauma next or maybe middle eastern next. and then black. But omg the tears I’d sob actually seeing it someone who looks like me and has experienced some of what i have. I’d- ugh. Or a movie about kids who have experienced abuse bc i did and trying to understand it isn’t their fault or trying to show it isn’t ok and to speak up and to stand their ground the best they can. I’d sob so hard.

I'll never understand all the people who bashed the movie because "they couldn't relate to it." There are swathes of movies I can't fully relate to and I still love. Even though I can't fully relate to being an asian teen girl, I related so hard to the self-pressure Mei Mei put herself under. I cried at the end because it reminded me so much of my own relationship with my mother.
Even if you can't relate to Turning Red whatsoever, not every movie is meant for every person and that's okay. It's not a good reason for people to bash it though :)

It's utterly ridiculous and I assume it's really just cloaked misogyny or something along those lines. I can't relate to being a billionaire who dresses like a f***ing bat and fights crime, but I'm still capable of enjoying those movies. And actually I found it quite easy to relate to this movie because I am also capable of empathy.

I fell in love with this movie in a way I haven’t with a movie for a long time. It’s so sincere and earnest in its execution while being insanely stylized. Domee Shi really dug deep inside herself to tell such and honest human story that it hurts my soul man. Everyone wants to talk about “coming of age” like it’s a big deal but this movie reminded me how universal those ideas and themes are. I’m so glad we’re also starting to explore the generational cycle we get caught up in in a subtle and thoughtful way. It hurt me to hear people hated this movie because it was “too cringey”. THAT’S THE POINT! You’re gonna sit there and lie to me like your pre-teen and teenage years weren’t cringey? Great movie, so happy to see you react to it!

My favorite 4*Town member is Taeyoung, but it's even harder for me to pick a favorite song. Hard to believe that Billie's brother Finneas got to voice Jesse in the film.
And can we applaud Jin for being the voice of reason? He finally freed his daughter from her mom's shadow. She was finally able to shine on her own and be the first in her family in a long time to accept her panda form.
Also, James Hong is always a win. I grew up with him voicing Daolon Wong in Jackie Chan Adventures and then Mr. Ping in the Kung Fu Panda films. (Not to mention he got to be Melinda May's father in the same SHIELD episode when they rescued Jemma.) I actually got to meet him once.

What I find most interesting about this movie is how even though it looks so hyper-focused on a particular demographic, everybody I know who’s seen it (none of whom have ANYTHING specifically related to the characters) has walked away from it feeling like it was speaking directly to them. I’m about as polar opposite from Mei as one could possibly get, and yet her experiences in dealing with her own self image and the heavy expectations put upon her by a loving yet over-bearing parent spoke to me deeply. Everybody seems to draw something very specific from it that relates to their own life experiences no matter who they are or where they are in their life’s journey. That’s the sign of a brilliantly written story.

Awesome reaction, Jess. I am so happy to see your take on this movie.
Wow, I know one was Walt Disney Animation and the other (this movie) was Pixar, but just the fact that Disney released two movies that tackled intergenerational trauma in their own ways with heartwarming conclusions to each only a few months apart amazes me in just the best way. It helps that I love both Encanto and Turning Red A LOT. :D (On a related note, both also made me think of comic characters due to the powers characters in both movies had)
I love Mei and her friend group. Abby's chaos (she even speaks Korean when she's particularly agitated..though only in two scenes), Miriam's easygoing and nurturing energy, and Priya's low-energy (a perfect balance to Abby's high energy) vibe while also being into night creatures like werewolves and vampires are all things that endear them to me. And they're all so super supportive of one another, especially towards Mei, so I do find this friend group to be super wholesome. ^___^
I actually liked that Tyler became part of the group after they spotted him at the concert as a closet 4-Townie. Not every bully in film needs to be an irredeemable jerk like Ercole from Luca.
Mei went on quite a journey, but I was happy to see her embrace the panda and I love the role her father played in giving her a perspective she needed to hear to make an informed decision on what she wanted for herself.
Small thing. As a boy who grew up on video games in the 90s (and still loves them today), Mei leaving the temple with her friends at the end with the ears and tail of the panda gave me real Super Mario Bros. vibes and I loved that too. XD
Sorry that my comments are always so long, Jess. It doesn't feel like it when I type them out. ^_^''

I was also an "over-achieving dork-narc" whose parents were loving but with VERY HIGH expectations, with associated pressures (Nobel prize for me rather than UN secretary general, but, you know, close enough 🤪)

This movie made me so happy. Just overall the recognition of generational trauma can hit close to home with basically everyone. But this movie especially ended with a happy ending instead of one where the kids and parents never speak to each other again which I personally think makes a huge difference

A great movie, once again continuing the trend of movies exploring generational trauma. I could relate to the Dad although out of everyone lol

It's a shame that Disney refused to allow this a theatrical release. They were afraid to lose money, but they still get to rake in the profits from it's success.

Isn't it a common trope to call a group with a number in the name to announce one thing while being one more ? To hide your true forces ? I don't know when it began, but the 3 musketeers are the first iteration of this trope I can remember (they are four, Athos, Portos, Aramis, and Dartagnan).

I just realize, what if they have a son in the family?
    Would they have the gift?
Since they never confirmed if it can happen to a Male somehow. Instead of a Female at some point in their Family lineage.

If they had a son, the red panda wouldn’t have passed down to him. The legend goes is that the female ancestor created the red panda to protect the family while the men go off to war. I think.

What the director said she wanted to make clear is that a child can absolutely be loved and the apple of her mom's eye - and there can still be tension and disagreements. It is NEVER in question how much Ming loves her daughter.

Turing red is suuuuper cringe, and that can be off putting at first (that and the character design is a bit of a choice). But if you really think about it, this is a movie about a bunch of 13 year old Canadian beliebers growing up in the earthly 2000s, it’s supposed to be cringey. And once you realize that, the movie actually becomes really good imo.

I loved this movie, being a 30 year old black man I felt so seen, and those self talk scenes mei had were so triggering took me back to the time I got caught forging my mom signature, and I was so convinced I was a awful kid I ran away came back a few hours later when I realized I didn't know where to go.

I prefer the family drama in Encanto. I was sad that Mirabel was rejected by her family; her mother and Louisa were the only ones who were nice with her; the others were jerks just because she had no power. That was horrible! I was happy that she found Bruno and her grandma appologise for all the awful things she said. Mei's '' problem '' is not that big. She can't go to a concert? It's not dramatic compare to being hated by every member of your family. Also, the house was destroyed and almost killed Mirabel. Mei was not in danger except at the end when her mother went to the concert.
The animation is ok but the story wasn't interresting for me 😐Her friends were boring especially the girl who likes Twilight, the bully had no development. He laughed at Mei then she forgive him because he likes the same band as her, that was weird. Her aunts weren't funny and the climax was lame.

I did not expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. Not that I thought it would be bad, I just did not expect it to be as great as it was. And, hell, I even found something I could relate to. When the mom says to Mei Mei “you try so hard to please everyone and make everyone happy” or something like that, I legit teared up because that’s me. I wouldn’t consider it my favorite film ever, but definitely one I can rewatch when I want to have a fun time.

In Canada there is no middle school. Public school goes from kindergarten to grade 8 and high school goes from grade 9 to grade 12. Then it’s off to either college or university if one so desires.
