"Achilles Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin is one of the band's most iconic songs, known for its complex structure and epic themes. The song appears on their 1976 album Presence and is renowned for its driving rhythm, intricate guitar work, and mythological references. Themes and Meaning Mythological References: The title of the song alludes to Achilles, a hero from Greek mythology known for his strength and near invincibility, with the exception of his heel. The song's lyrics reference various mythological and heroic themes, suggesting an exploration of the struggle and the idea of a "last stand." Travel and Exploration: The song was partly inspired by Robert Plant's travels to Morocco and Spain in 1975, as well as his fascination with ancient cultures and mythology. At the time of writing, Plant was recovering from a serious car accident, which left him temporarily unable to walk. The song captures the feeling of fighting through hardship, much like Achilles fighting in his final battle. Epic and Heroic Imagery: The lyrics are filled with grand imagery and epic landscapes, creating a sense of vastness and heroism. The music complements this with its layered guitars and complex arrangements, conveying a sense of urgency and power. Musical Composition Instrumentation: The song features Jimmy Page's layered guitar work, including multiple overdubs and intricate solos. John Bonham's drumming is particularly notable for its intensity and precision, driving the song forward with a relentless pace. Structure: "Achilles Last Stand" is over ten minutes long, making it one of Led Zeppelin's longest tracks. The song's structure is complex, with multiple sections that build upon each other, creating a dynamic and evolving musical journey. Production: The track was recorded during a challenging period for the band, with Plant's injury and personal issues among the members. Despite this, the song showcases their musical prowess and creativity. Interpretation "Achilles Last Stand" is often interpreted as a reflection of Led Zeppelin's own struggles and triumphs. The themes of heroism, resilience, and exploration mirror the band's journey through personal and professional challenges. The song's epic nature and powerful composition have made it a fan favorite and a standout track in Led Zeppelin's discography. In summary, "Achilles Last Stand" is about the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity, drawing on mythological and personal inspiration to create a powerful and timeless piece of music.
I'm a guitar player but every time I listen to Zeppelin I'm completely enraptured by Bonzo's insane drumming! That guy is on a level no one can reach because while there may be drummers who are highly technical and can match his technique (if so barely) but no one can touch his creativity!! I can imagine Page bringing in a skeleton of a song idea and letting Bonzo just go. That must have been such a feeling of complete joy to watch what he would do.
The remarkable thing about this is it really shows off the bond between Paige and Bonham. Jimmy was a very rythmically - aware guitar player and a very skilled, precise one. There are some solos where he shows off his passion, too. This is one of them. The counterpoint is off the scale on this one.
Watch this live at Knebworth 79 it’ll knock your socks off! From what I’ve seen and heard, this was right after Bonham talked Robert into returning to the band after Karac’s death, his surgery on his vocal cords & Jimmy beating his demons so no surprise there is so much power and heart in it. Still say best band ever!!
“ The most intense and also most unknown/ underrated track they ever recorded. Back in the day you had to buy the album because radio wouldn’t play this song.”
The Band was in the worst shape of their personal lives, touring, injuries, addiction, exhaustion, in-house bickering, and yet they created this masterpiece of a song/album.
It's amazing that Robert Plant recorded this while sitting in a wheelchair recovering from his car accident. I think the song is about LZ going on tour. The reference to Atlas holding the heavens from the Earth comes from Greek mythology. Atlas was a Titan who was condemned to hold up the sky for eternity. They called it Achilles last stand because of Achilles heel. Robert Plant's accident caused great damage to his ankle and heel.
Achilles is always an in your face rock tune!! but at 7 mins and again at 8 mins in becomes a fave!. (From the biggest, baddest, coolest catalogue in the history of music).
This song is MAGNIFICENT! The magical intro and the ending and a guitar solo that always gives me chills . The drums are incredibly powerful too. I’ve been listening to this song for over 30 years and I am still astounded .
I thought it was in reference to the Greek titan 'Atlas': "Atlas sided with the Titans in their war against the Olympians. When the Titans were defeated, Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of Gaia (the Earth) and hold up the sky on his shoulders." (Heavens - sky, Earth - Gaia)
I don't know but if that is what has been said about the Atlas Mountains, (that they appear to hold the heavens from the earth), I would imagine they were probably named after the Greek mythological figure for that reason. In other words it's not a separate or alternative reference.

This song is an absolute orgasm of energy (and overdubs)!! From the mystical intro to the hard charging hypnotic rhythms with stacco "military" beats, coupled with layer upon layer of soaring guitar riffs and piercing solos. Topped by Plants haunting yet melodic wails, and lyrical references to Greek Mythology. It's a MASTERFUL stroke at what can be achieved with creativity, time, and unlimited tracks. It's the Mighty Zeps "Coupe de Grace" in the same way as Bohemian Rhapsody is to Queen.
Was missing this reaction! Just last week I went on vimeo to find it. I don't know why this particular song is my favorite of Led Zeppelin, but it's great to watch others experience it for the first time. Thank you for re-uploading! All the best

It was an April morning when they told us we should go And as I turned to you, you smiled at me How could we say no? The multiple tracks of layered Guitar on this song are AMAZING!!! As a guitar player for many decades, every time listening to this masterpiece by Page there is always something new to hear. Jimmy has said this was his Favorite Zep song. Like many LZ songs there is a lot to take in, but this is on another level!! A symphony of Guitar, with outstanding drums, matching Bass and Plant tears it up on vocals. Soul Train Bro, this is one song that a first time reaction is near impossible to take it all in. Would be interesting to react to this after listening 5 times, then 10 then again at 20. Seriously it only gets better every time. Once again appreciate your take. Although I love the live versions, Zep does an OK job with this, however it loses so much with jimmy only being able to play one guitar at a time. LOL Amazing Page and Zep could even play this live and it be any good, shows how great they are.
Welcome to the mighty zep AND the late John "thunder foot" Bonham drummer extrordinaire. John had the greatest right foot ever. He didnt use a double bass drum kit, did all that with his right foot and 1 bass drum. He is missed. Glad you did this song, one of my top fave zep tunes. This album and especially this song just don't get the props they deserve IMO. This isn't radio fodder. It is for Zeppelin fans. For me I have a hard time picking a favorite Zepp song. I like every one of them but on any given day it is Achilles Last Stand or When the Levee Breaks. If you don't want to get a speeding ticket don't even think about listening to this song while driving an open road.
It's definitely not about seeking God. It's about a trip that Plant and Page took together along the western coast of Africa - all the way up through Morocco. The man and his pointing hand - was a guy giving them directions. They were traveling in a Land Rover through territory which they were totally unfamiliar with.
Wayne, you asked whether LZ had done any other foreign journey songs, apart from Immigrant Song and Achilles Last Stand. There are also Kashmir (off Physical Graffiti), Going to California (Led Zep IV), and Battle of Evermore (Led Zep IV, Plant wrote the song while reading about the Anglo-Scots wars, and also referencing mythology and the supernatural, angels of Avalon (meaning Isle of fruit/apple trees mentioned in the Arthurian legends of Old England and was associated with mystical practices)). As you say, many Led Zep songs have a real sense of place and history. Peace.
I hear the drums! just in case you haven't found out yet Yoyoka has just covered this number to commemorate JHB on the anniversary of his passing. Hope find it.
The intro/outro have a similar feeling to No Quarter, but somehow less foggy (not to say foggy is bad, it suits no quarter perfectly - cloudy nights at sea etc.). The song though makes me think of the almost idiotic levels of courage the unimaginably talented have. Like the mighty Achilles, killing the Trojan prince outside the gates of Troy for all the city to see. The solo to the song sounds like a brutal fight, waxing and waning as the two guitar parts seem to tire and rest; followed by parts like at 09:01, where the guitar tracks fall over each other, like they're blindly searching for a way out. As one fades, another overdub gives a livening, retorting burst. The drum and bass combo sounds like a horse's gallop to me too, further transcending me. I know this song is essentially just about dodging tax, but the places it can take my imagination are spectacular.

One of my all time favorite Zeppelin songs.
He talks about why he wrote this song. it was to escape being laid up after his accident and wanting to escape where he was on Halloween
It was an April morning when they told us we should go
And as I turned to you, you smiled at me
How could we say no?
With all the fun to have, to live the dreams we always had
Whoa, the songs to sing when we at last return again
Sending off a glancing kiss to those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss
The devil is in his hole
Oh to sail away to sandy lands and other days
Oh to touch the dream, hides inside and never seen
Into the sun the south the north, at last the birds have flown
The shackles of commitments fell in pieces on the ground
Oh to ride the wind, to tread the air above the din
Oh to laugh aloud, dancing as we fought the crowd
To seek the man whose pointing hand
The giant step unfolds
To guide us from the curving path
That turns our feet to stone
If one bell should ring in celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat as proud the head with heavy feet
Days went by when you and I bathed in eternal summer's glow
As far away and distant our mutual child did grow
Oh the sweet refrain soothes the soul and calms the pain
Oh Albion remains, sleeping now to rise again
Wondering and wandering
What place to rest the search
The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
From the earth
I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way
Oh the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
The BEST!
Thank you for the lyrics!

Wayne did you review this song at Knebworth 8/4/79? Awesome live!
Yes. It's blocked here. On my Vimeo though.
my favourite reaction of yours, (along with dazed from tsrts)
One for the 'Dazed and Confused' challenge, Bonham is on fire, Hamburg 73..@
Besides Roberts vocals which always mesmorizes me anyway, but this is a perfect demonstration of 3 instrumentalists perfectly in sync with each other.
This is other level stuff Bro....
Bonzo was a madman.
About atlas, greek mythology and his range rover accident.
Nice thoughts, Wayne, bro. This isn't even my favourite song on Presence. That would be Nobody's Fault But Mine.
Heart used this galloping horse in Barracuda.
Iron Maiden has made a very lucrative career of galloping metal for years.
yeh they basically lifted the whole rythym section and put a song on top lol
Achilles riff actually goes back to 1973 in that "if you're going to san Francisco" cover. Same ascending melody.
@@ledzeppacker yup the riff goes back to at least 73, i know the exact part you mean lol. Dazed and confused msg 73, the san francisco part
Jimmy Page is bringing the horse with that opening rhythm. Or should I say king Agamemnon, it's about the epic poem about the battle of Troy.
Drums? You mean that 3000 🐎?
Did you hear the drums?!
Wayne please tell us your 5 top zep songs ??
I don't have a top five, only a number one. Since I've been loving you.
You can hear a more in sync rhythmic solidarity with all of them six minutes in.
Musicianship was spectacular! What year did this happen? 1975-76?
This song is John Bohnam's!
goddamn, did you hear those drums?
Soooo......have you listened to any tool? Just asking.
10 min 31 sec. 146 bpm.
Hell of a workout for a drummer. Not mention keeping it tight.
Why don't you try "bring it on home!"
One of my favs. Sadly it's been blocked.
For Your Life...a repost perhaps?
I'll try
@@SoulTrainBro thanks bro..it really has an unusual breakdown..funky and soulful with tricky time changes! Right up your alley...
It's been blocked. You can find it on my Vimeo page.
What does "repost" mean?
Means that when he first posted it UA-cam blocked it. So he posted it on his patron page. Now it is a repost to his UA-cam page.
Oops. *reposting
I think it’s called a bollaro reminds me of spainish horse riders
Bonham is a one man marching band on steroids
It's Greek mythology............Achilles Last Stand......read your history !
