No new model in the past decade has come close to generating as much interest as the new 300 Series LandCruiser.
Thanks to its Australian media launch, we can finally tell you what the big Toyota LC300 LandCruiser 4x4 five and seven-seat SUV finished product is like to drive on and off road, dissect the whole Australian line-up, and go through all the details we were still missing when we published the great Byron Mathioudakis’ prototype review back in August.
Is the big LandCruiser still the best all-rounder on the market and does it live up to those massive expectations? Would you have it over a Y62 Nissan Patrol or the upcoming Lexus LX600? Watch on - and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

I’m not in a rush to get out my 200 into a 300 series. 11 years and 230km on the clock with a lot of heavy towing and not one issue with the old girl, and I’m still on my second set if tyres😳 she’s been serviced religiously by Toyota and runs better than a Swiss watch.

Pretty standard video, but I can't stand the all around positivity, everything about this NEW and IMPROVED is BETTER, nothing to criticise. The removal of the split tailgate, beloved by all, is a huge negative, yet you manage to spin it in a positive light, to please the manufacturer, I guess. Are you making the review for the consumer, or is this a PR piece for Toyota? “When it's up, it makes for a handy shelter.“ That could be said about the 200 as well, its tailgate could also go up and be a handy shelter. Great seal against dust? I guess I better tell all the offroaders that own the 200 that they've been doing it wrong. Completely new engines, architecture, smaller fuel tank, 12+ years since the last model and all they manage to do is shave a few 10s of kg and 0.6l/100km better fuel economy “but it could be a lot worse“ ... for what? You lose the V8 for 0.6l/100km, for a new engine with unknown reliability? No thanks.

I’m really surprised the don’t have a lot of the towing tech out there now (eg RAM, Silverado GLS) also very surprised how bad the third row legroom is for one of the biggest large SUV out there (and foot room for 2nd row pax under the front seat looks tight). Also shelf have wireless CarPlay these days and on Sahara model and above for the $. None the less look forward to test driving it.

When it came time to buy a new 4wd l had my heart set on an LC200. My previous vehicle was a 2006 Jeep Commander with 350,00k's on the clock, only had a couple of small issues with it, otherwise totally reliable. It ran a Mercedes Benz Turbo V6 and averaged about 12 liter per 100km. When l looked at what was out there in the way of a large family 4wd's the LC200 just didn't stack up. If l had the time l could list all the issues. But one of the major ones was the third row seats, which on such a big vehicle were useless. Apart from taking up all that space in the cargo bay, you couldn't get in and out easily and when you did, because the third row seats were almost flat on the floor as an adult your knees were up around your head. Which means it's pretty much useless for long trips even for teenager's. Of course a lot of people don't use the 3rd row, so this doesn't matter. l hope toyota have fixed this up in the LC300. l have no issue buying a well designed V6 over a V8, just don't know about the Hot V configuration. In the end l bought a TI Nissan patrol and put some of the money towards improving the economy. It now has a Unchip, Air intake and Torqit exhaust installed and is averaging 14.4litres per 100kms. On the highway it now goes below 10 litres per 100kms. The car is a beast has 360KW and 670NM of torque. If you don't drive it like you stole it, and for $35K less than a comparable Toyota it is a steal, then it won't suck petrol and you will get economy that is similar or better than an LC200 however l think the LC300 is going to do a better job here. However Toyota has jacked up the price again another 10k again. l can no longer see the value of the Landcruiser compared to other offerings and think when the Ineos Grenadier comes out Toyota and possibly Nissan will loose sakes to it. I'm not a Toyota or Nissan fanboy. If you do your research on the net you will find that the Patrol is equally as capable as the LC200. Now would Like to see how it stacks up now to the LC300. The interior is certainly miles better than the Patrol but l can forgive this for $40-$45K price difference.

Brilliant review of the model variance, Mal. Best one I'm seen to date. 👍 I have to say, I've never seen the GXL variant from any previous LandCruiser models look more like a poverty pack than it does in the LC300 (referring to the front). From how it looks from the outside, its hard to believe it cost $109K drive away.. And you have to go to the Sahara & above to get a HUD? Really Toyota? C'mon Toyota, nowadays that should be a standard feature. And if Hyundai/Kia can fit a wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on their Sub $40k models, surely you can fit one in your $100+K LandCruisers? I'm both loving it and feeling like I'm going to get ripped off at the same time.

How many people actually have triplets? And how many of them have 300 series money? I don't know about Australia, but in South Africa it's mostly middle aged couples with kids in their late teens to early twenties that are buying these. It was the same with the 200 series. Both are aimed at rich people, and rich people around here tend to be smart enough to stop at 2 kids. I highly doubt that Toyota was trying to design the 300 series for people with their own creche.

Starting at $90000, it feels stingy to have a smaller screen and wired Airplay, that stuff doesn't cost much to implement but they just seem to cut that stuff to justify the more expensive versions. Comparing the value to the Nissan Patrol, the Landcruiser is definitely more expensive to buy but costs less to run. The Patrol doesn't seem so stingy on the extras and even the cheapest one gets more than the cruiser. The problem will be actually getting one delivered.

Why are these reviews not objective? It's really an advertisment of features not a critical review at all. The split tail gate never leaked dust. It's better for towing boats. The single hatch make it questionable whether you can open the back as winch clearance is going to be tight!. There's no discussion about actual 3.5 ton towing ability. There no discussion about the 10 speed transmission and actual engine braking and manual shift. How do you fit a rear view caravan towing camera screen on that dash. Relying on mirrors for a heavy big van is so yesterday. And lastly is the heat issue.

@@NoOne-qr8yf See John Cadogen report. John was concerned about the potential under bonnet heat because of the design of the Turbos that would potentially trap allot of heat into the centre of the V6. So when the engine is working hard and its hot and slow e.g. towing a load in sand and its 45 degrees which isn't unusual in inland Australia whether the temperatures could become a problem. It's too early to tell. This summer might provide further information however. The V6 like the previous V8 are thermal heat transfer systems. The V6 is generating significantly more NM.
