Gameplay > aesthetics, aesthetics > graphics. No amount of garnish/presentation is going to make a turd not taste like a turd.

That is true for "gameplay focused games." There are a lot of games whose purpose is not the gameplay, that capture their player-base with the other elements of their game, games that focus on narrative, ambiance, vibes, and so on.

Gameplay up top has always been false. Gamers claim that gameplay is king, but things like Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and Midnight Sons immediately disprove that.

Graphics are a great thing. I want amazing graphics. But I want amazing gameplay first. One of the big problems is that many games seem to have fancy graphics as a substitute for decent gameplay. It doesn't necessarily mean retro pixel graphics will make a great game. Plenty of bad ones THERE too. But sometimes you get that perfect mix and...YES...

Art Style is the most important thing when it comes to making a game with looks that stand the test of time. Something like Dishonored 2 looks like a game that could have come out this year.

Zelda botw and totk are realy good examples that artstyle is sometimes better way to go than just pure graphics design

I still remember me and friends joking about the little hair fuzz on skin when you zoom in and how worthless that is to the game overall.

Well, for certain types of uh, "games" I can see details like that being a draw, but yeah its mostly just unnecessary fluff and that development time would be better used elsewhere.

graphics also bloat up the game size and cant make up for shallow writing, mechanics and gameplay loops; not to mention bugs and other flaws. what it does it cranks up the requirements and smalls the market for itself. graphics are nice for promotion purposes but when you for example play a fast paced game with top of the line graphics you wont notice much since you dont have time to stop and smell the roses, the upcoming hunt showdown engine update is a prime example for that

2:20 - Max has a video where he talks about the one guy that animated his intro, as well as the musician. If you're looking for something, they're the ones! Also I'm glad you're checking out Max Dood Max, I don't know many people that actually reacts to his content and I think there are some hidden gems in it, especially the Hype and Rage content if you're looking for something more generic.

    2 points:
Firstly, at this point in time, I think it's clear that good aesthetics (which can include graphical fidelity and artstyle, at least for me) is where it's at for games visually speaking, not just graphical fidelity by itself.
Secondly, gaming being fully mainstream now, I expect the average customer's knowledge level about games to be significantly higher than before, which should make it much harder to sell a game on visuals alone.
The looks of a game is still what draws in my attention a lot of the time, though.

Some older games look good, if we can do graphics that were ok looking, and put rest into gameplay, fun, easter eggs and stuff like that it would be ok with me, hell pixel game with good style looks better than some triple A games because even with good pc stuff looks weird sometimes.

I mean... At this point, just go to one of Lythero's videos and find the credits for the animators he gets in touch with.😂

I think detailed graphics have a time and a place, just like I think cartoonish colorful animation have been the best way to represent Spider Man in the movies, as long as it fits and is practical hardware-wise I'm in. Sekiro and Control are such good looking games, but no one would be able to enjoy them if the games didn't run great on all systems too. Both of them are 2019 titles and not a lot of games have been able to look as good while also running properly on modern systems.

This years Game Shows, you know the one that was a month ago, We all saw an abundance of good trailers, I personally had fun to experience them all.
Out of all the things I picked to be my peak game was Marvel Vs Capcom Arcade Collection, so yeah, graphics doesn't matter.
There are still games that Still haven't been surpassed gameplay wise, and they're old as shit.
Nothing can beat God Hand as the best Beat 'Em Up, Nothing can beat MGS1 real yet dramatic and engaging story
And nothing still can't beat Jagged Alliance 2 as the best Turn based Tactical and Strategy hybrid game.

The only time graphics matter to me is when playing older games, I simply have trouble with early 3d games from the ps1, n64, dreamcast era. Anytime after or before those systems I'm completely fine with graphics.
I'd still boot up sly cooper if I had a ps2 anymore. I still play Daggerfall from time to time. Hell, I'm having a lot of fun with EDF6 though it looks like a late ps3 game.

Do graphics sell video games...well yes and no.
Graphics are a double edged sword that has now come to bite the industry in the ass since gamers can tell when they're blowing smoke out their ass.
Lets look at games like Starfield and, to a lesser extent, BG3. Both games were specifically praised for their graphics by the usual suspects and not finding them perfect got you the usual labels. THEN several youtubers overlayed graphics from ME2 against those two games.
A game from 2010 had better faces and overall graphics than games made in 2023. Then of course you have the Stellar blade fallout that proved that devs were lying about limitations in the software.
There's a reason why there's a resergence in indie games using pixel graphics.

I think they sell, but do they matter to me? Not a all, a game looking realistic doesn't matter and if it costs more and takes longer just for a game to look better, then I don't think it's good.
Also I don't say this to be mean to your girlfriend, but her struggling to with games cause their more cartoonish seems close minded, I guess? I don't know, I feel like being unable to enjoy media simply cause of the art style is weird to me, since I enjoy variety and games striving for realism look too similar to me.

graphics still matter, however customers are becoming smarter where they put their money, although they still matter as even games like FIFA still sell a lot of copies, and it makes sense for FIFA as a lot of their money comes from microtransactions, its okay losing some money initially but you gotta make profits some other ways, and it works.
edit: realised FIFA might not be the best example as they hardly change much, maybe call of duty would be a better example

But even elden ring's graphics are not super realistic, only the architecture and armor are polished. The vistas are beautiful without the need to be photorealistic like Shadow of the Tomb Raider or UE5 stuff

I'd say still yes. Go ask the casual gamers about which games they buy and ask them to tell you what's so great about them, 9 times out of 10, they'll go on and on about the graphics. I think MH: World vs MH: Rise are the best comparison, even though Rise came out after World, a lot of people, some of my friends as well, who played and loved World- didn't play Rise because of the graphics.
