As a Swede, this is nothing special for me, but it makes me happy to the heart to see how much you appreciate Sweden. You should really do a long trip to Northern Sweden in the spring or summer, on a good day you don't see any people at all, and although I have seen it all my life, the midnight sun is actually really cool for outdoors life, when you still can read a book outside at midnight without any additional lights, just get a Thermacell to keep the mosquitos away.
Hi, the freedom you have to camp pretty much where you want is fantastic -the rest of Europe is so restrictive (but i get it), we really loved our brief time in Sweden and that day will be one we wont ever forget. Yeah we will be back for sure and would love to spend some more time in Sweden. Do those Thermacells work i have seen them advertised but wasn't sure -thankfully Emily's fire did a good job but i imagine in the summer it's worse. Thanks for watching Sean and Emily

Wild camping is the way to go. Been wild camping through Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Norway and Denmark. You get the hang of finding the good spots on maps. two up on the motorcycle can be a challenge sometimes though on very small trails. We have one rule out riding - No hotels! And, as long as you can - avoid camping sites. There's usually a lake somewhere to clean up in (except Denmark).
Yeah something about wild camping that’s truly amazing 😊 We don’t really like staying at campsites (at least not the super busy ones) -kind of defeats the object of peace and quiet. As this tour was rather late in the season the lake was too cold 🥶 but in the summer it must be awesome. Thanks for your comment Sean and Emily
I really like your report today. I've been watching you for a while now. We met on the way back from Lofoten in the parking lot. We were driving on three BMWs towards Nordkap. Everything worked out great, although with adventures :) I'm waiting for further reports and see you someday on the route.

It was pretty common 50 years ago to smuggle homemade vodka from Norway. It was a good income for the Norwegians back then. And it was often very good quality.
In Sweden it is much easier to find wildcamping spots compared to Norway. Terrain makes all the difference 😊 Up in northern sweden there are many signs to where wild spots are. Keep a lookout for a white signs with either a P or a caravan on it and you will find amazing places.

When looking in Norway there where either lots of rocks or boggy terrain or national parks where i think it was forbidden. Lovely spot! One tip however! It looks like its used by the locals to put a boat into the lake for fishing. So keep the main track free and set up your tent a bit on the side, someone might actually come by in the evening for some fishing and its then more complicated to move your gear if you dont have a free standing tent!
Hi , that's a good tip! That did cross our minds but it looked like it hadn't been used for a while (overgrown and no tire tracks). Ive never tried the motocamping thing, as hotels ( just simple/cheap ones normally) mean travelling with less gear, and more room for the wifes stuff lol. But seeing this could change my mind, amazing spot you found there.
Yeah that's understandable, for some tours we also will use just basic hotels but for locations like this it's an experience in itself to be able to sleep in the middle of nowhere. We are not so interested in staying in a busy campsite. Oure camping setup is quite compact so doesn't take up too much room and even when we are not camping we always bring our cooking equipment anyway. Thanks for your comment. @@SeanandEmily Another tip: birch bark is a common tinder here in the Nordics. You can light it with a ferro rod directly even if it's a bit damp as long as you process it into fine shavings by scraping it with a knife. It contains oils that light and burn very well. No lighter fluid needed.
That hair like stuff looks like lichen to me. Sweden and Norway remind me of where I live, the Pacific NW. We have lichen growing everywhere. Lichen: A composite organism made up of a fungus, usually an ascomycete, that grows symbiotically with an alga or a cyanobacterium and characteristically forms a crustlike or branching growth on rocks or tree trunks

@@SeanandEmily these are common in more rural areas in Finland too. I think they've been used for medical purposes for thousands of years, as they have some antibiotic features. They're said to mostly grow in areas with no air pollution.
Welcome to Sweden. In some aspects, Sweden and Norway are very similar. There are areas that is very different, but should one generalize, then. Norway is more scenic, lots of more beautiful places, especially along the coast. The roads are a bit different, and generalizing, the standard of roads is higher in Sweden, the speeds limits in Sweden have a bit of a tolerance, while in Norway, it is more like Switzerland where you risk getting a ticket driving 91 on a 90 road. The speed cameras in Sweden have a lower tolerance than the actual police would give you. On the other hand, being on a bike you wont risk having a speed camera ticket in Sweden on a bike because it is front face pictures only, and in Sweden they must be able to compare your face to your drivers license to actually give you a ticket. Lodging are usually a bit higher standard in Sweden than in Norway, and the prices are usually much more expensive in Norway. There is also a lot of places you can boondock / disperse camp in Sweden. Basically you can just find any old tractor road, go in there, legally camp for 24h max without landowner permission. Coffee culture is big in Sweden. Dont expect to get coffee like in America where it is basically tea made from coffee grounds, No, here you will wake up on a little cup. Enjoy the ride.
Hi Magnus. Nice to hear from you and thanks very much for the information! That's a good summery of the areas and you're right about the speeding in Norway! We met a guy who's friend had been caught riding rather quick -he got a huge fine, deported out the country and had to pay for the transportation of his bike too! (ouch). Since we live in Switzerland we are very well practiced at keeping to the speed limit so wasn't a problem -plus the constant threat of Elk and Reindeer on the road is a good reason to take it easy and enjoy the scenery 😎. The wild camping experience in Sweden was magical , we found the perfect spot and had an unforgettable experience -that's such a great law and we hope visitors respect it and leave the places they stay as clean as when they arrived. I think as we headed into the remote areas we didn't see many coffee shops but we came well prepared (totally agree with you there we don't like that drip coffee -double espresso with 40ml of water every time). Unfortunately on this trip we wont have enough time to explore Sweden as much as we would like to so we will have to come back another time (especially now we know there is a big coffee culture!) We were told the Tännforsen is the biggest waterfall in Sweden. If the Storforsen is more impressive then we will have to make sure we see it next time =)

Storforsen is a waterfall on the Pite River in Swedish Norrbottens län is located approximately 38 km northwest of Älvsbyn. With an average flow of 187 m³/s, the rapids are one of the most voluminous in Europe. The rapids stretch over a distance of 5 km in which it drops 82 meters, 60 of which are a single waterfall. Well worth a visit during spring or summer. Nice videos of your journeys, always interesting to see others first experiences of Scandinavia and Sweden in particular. Take care.

Actually it's rather problems using cash in Sweden than the opposite! I never have cash, many years ago I used cash and most people in Sweden don't use it. You can use cards everywhere, at a food stand, street market or even the smallest business. In many places they don't accept cash. It's also common now with Swish also for businesses, Swish is a way to instantly and in a very safe way transfer money/pay someone just using their mobile and it's based on just the mobile phone number. It's so extremely convenient and smart since it doesn't matter which carrier you have.

Do Swede's and Norwegians get along these days? I've never visited either country but I'd like to. All I know is that some Norwegians in the US harbor bad feelings toward Sweden. I'm very surprised to hear that since it's quite the opposite! It must be just those individuals! We really are brothers and sisters and language wise we speak very easily with each other. Norwegians are going to Sweden all the time buying groceries and alcohol since it's much cheaper in Sweden. They also own a lot of summer cabins on the Swedish west coast since they like being here and our nature is more accessible. I love Norway for its nature and go there a lot with my motorcycle 😊

Finland is not part of Scandinavia only Denmark, Sweden and Norway.(you can add in other close names like fenoscandia to the mix. then it becomes Norway, Sweden, north of Finland and a tiny part of Russia, or the Scandana mountain range wich is part of Norway, Sweden and Finland.) If you want to add Finland it becomes the nordic. (also Iceland) Its like saying that north Ireland is part great britian. As far as I know its not part of Great Britian but instead United Kingdom. But on the other hand Scandinavia is commonly missused in the english languge and it has it reason. English sientist heared the name Scandinavia, But they realy didnt care to learn exactly what it was so everything in the north became Scandinavia. A couple hundreds years later new english sientist realised that they used it in the wrong way. But instead of changing the way they used Scandinavia they said. Why change people in England are used to the term. Its not important to us if we use it correctly or not. Little bit like my generation Call Netherlands for Holland or calling United kingdom for England. We are used to the wrong name so we continue to use it. But for some people this is very important and it can get little bit nasty like calling Irish for brittish. Yeah I guess it is …but remember for the rest of Europe it’s almost always forbidden to camp anywhere other than a designated campsite. So wild camping or freedom camping is a commonly used term 😎👍🏻
a tip if you want to fish in Sweden check if its ok first. Then you have to buy a fishing licence (Ifiske is the webpage with a domain is se) If you are fishing at the coast or in the 5 biggest lakes you dont need to buy a licence but check the rules on how you can fish. There are local rules in almost every lake.

We did visit the same waterfall last summer! It was amazing experience. You can get so close to the huge stream of water.

A tip on perfect firestarter using a fero rod.
Vaseline and cotton, put Vaseline on the cotton and one good stroke on the fero rod will ignite it.

Lovely spot! One tip however! It looks like its used by the locals to put a boat into the lake for fishing. So keep the main track free and set up your tent a bit on the side, someone might actually come by in the evening for some fishing and its then more complicated to move your gear if you dont have a free standing tent!
Hi , that's a good tip! That did cross our minds but it looked like it hadn't been used for a while (overgrown and no tire tracks). Good idea with pitching the tent to one side -nothing worse that getting set up to have to move it again.

Ive never tried the motocamping thing, as hotels ( just simple/cheap ones normally) mean travelling with less gear, and more room for the wifes stuff lol. But seeing this could change my mind, amazing spot you found there.
Yeah that's understandable, for some tours we also will use just basic hotels but for locations like this it's an experience in itself to be able to sleep in the middle of nowhere. We are not so interested in staying in a busy campsite.
Oure camping setup is quite compact so doesn't take up too much room and even when we are not camping we always bring our cooking equipment anyway.

@@SeanandEmily Another tip: birch bark is a common tinder here in the Nordics. You can light it with a ferro rod directly even if it's a bit damp as long as you process it into fine shavings by scraping it with a knife. It contains oils that light and burn very well. No lighter fluid needed.

That hair like stuff looks like lichen to me. Sweden and Norway remind me of where I live, the Pacific NW. We have lichen growing everywhere. Lichen: A composite organism made up of a fungus, usually an ascomycete, that grows symbiotically with an alga or a cyanobacterium and characteristically forms a crustlike or branching growth on rocks or tree trunks

@@SeanandEmily these are common in more rural areas in Finland too. I think they've been used for medical purposes for thousands of years, as they have some antibiotic features. They're said to mostly grow in areas with no air pollution.
Welcome to Sweden.
In some aspects, Sweden and Norway are very similar. There are areas that is very different, but should one generalize, then. Norway is more scenic, lots of more beautiful places, especially along the coast. The roads are a bit different, and generalizing, the standard of roads is higher in Sweden, the speeds limits in Sweden have a bit of a tolerance, while in Norway, it is more like Switzerland where you risk getting a ticket driving 91 on a 90 road. The speed cameras in Sweden have a lower tolerance than the actual police would give you. On the other hand, being on a bike you wont risk having a speed camera ticket in Sweden on a bike because it is front face pictures only, and in Sweden they must be able to compare your face to your drivers license to actually give you a ticket. Lodging are usually a bit higher standard in Sweden than in Norway, and the prices are usually much more expensive in Norway. There is also a lot of places you can boondock / disperse camp in Sweden. Basically you can just find any old tractor road, go in there, legally camp for 24h max without landowner permission.
Coffee culture is big in Sweden. Dont expect to get coffee like in America where it is basically tea made from coffee grounds, No, here you will wake up on a little cup.

That's a good summery of the areas and you're right about the speeding in Norway! We met a guy who's friend had been caught riding rather quick -he got a huge fine, deported out the country and had to pay for the transportation of his bike too! (ouch). Since we live in Switzerland we are very well practiced at keeping to the speed limit so wasn't a problem -plus the constant threat of Elk and Reindeer on the road is a good reason to take it easy and enjoy the scenery 😎.
The wild camping experience in Sweden was magical , we found the perfect spot and had an unforgettable experience -that's such a great law and we hope visitors respect it and leave the places they stay as clean as when they arrived.
I think as we headed into the remote areas we didn't see many coffee shops but we came well prepared (totally agree with you there we don't like that drip coffee -double espresso with 40ml of water every time).
Unfortunately on this trip we wont have enough time to explore Sweden as much as we would like to so we will have to come back another time (especially now we know there is a big coffee culture!)

There is a bigger waterfall further up north, Storforsen, a bit more impressing in comparison with this one.
We were told the Tännforsen is the biggest waterfall in Sweden. If the Storforsen is more impressive then we will have to make sure we see it next time =)
@@SeanandEmily I grew up in a small village a couple of km from the rapids, spent quite a lot of time there during the summers. Storforsen is a waterfall on the Pite River in Swedish Norrbottens län is located approximately 38 km northwest of Älvsbyn. With an average flow of 187 m³/s, the rapids are one of the most voluminous in Europe. The rapids stretch over a distance of 5 km in which it drops 82 meters, 60 of which are a single waterfall. Well worth a visit during spring or summer. Nice videos of your journeys, always interesting to see others first experiences of Scandinavia and Sweden in particular. Take care.

Actually it's rather problems using cash in Sweden than the opposite! I never have cash, many years ago I used cash and most people in Sweden don't use it. You can use cards everywhere, at a food stand, street market or even the smallest business. In many places they don't accept cash.
It's also common now with Swish also for businesses, Swish is a way to instantly and in a very safe way transfer money/pay someone just using their mobile and it's based on just the mobile phone number. It's so extremely convenient and smart since it doesn't matter which carrier you have.
Hi, that's great! As you say card is accepted everywhere which is so convenient! I don't think we have used cash the whole trip. We have a similar system in Switzerland 'twint' which is very convenient.

Do Swede's and Norwegians get along these days? I've never visited either country but I'd like to. All I know is that some Norwegians in the US harbor bad feelings toward Sweden. I'm very surprised to hear that since it's quite the opposite! It must be just those individuals! We really are brothers and sisters and language wise we speak very easily with each other. Norwegians are going to Sweden all the time buying groceries and alcohol since it's much cheaper in Sweden. They also own a lot of summer cabins on the Swedish west coast since they like being here and our nature is more accessible. I love Norway for its nature and go there a lot with my motorcycle 😊

Finland is not part of Scandinavia only Denmark, Sweden and Norway.(you can add in other close names like fenoscandia to the mix. then it becomes Norway, Sweden, north of Finland and a tiny part of Russia, or the Scandana mountain range wich is part of Norway, Sweden and Finland.) If you want to add Finland it becomes the nordic. (also Iceland)
Its like saying that north Ireland is part great britian. As far as I know its not part of Great Britian but instead United Kingdom. But on the other hand Scandinavia is commonly missused in the english languge and it has it reason. English sientist heared the name Scandinavia, But they realy didnt care to learn exactly what it was so everything in the north became Scandinavia.
A couple hundreds years later new english sientist realised that they used it in the wrong way. But instead of changing the way they used Scandinavia they said. Why change people in England are used to the term. Its not important to us if we use it correctly or not.
Little bit like my generation Call Netherlands for Holland or calling United kingdom for England. We are used to the wrong name so we continue to use it.
But for some people this is very important and it can get little bit nasty like calling Irish for brittish.

Yeah I guess it is …but remember for the rest of Europe it’s almost always forbidden to camp anywhere other than a designated campsite. So wild camping or freedom camping is a commonly used term 😎👍🏻

No we don't fish but Seeing them jumping out the water you could probably scoop them out with a net lol =)

a tip if you want to fish in Sweden check if its ok first. Then you have to buy a fishing licence (Ifiske is the webpage with a domain is se) If you are fishing at the coast or in the 5 biggest lakes you dont need to buy a licence but check the rules on how you can fish. There are local rules in almost every lake.
