When to use present perfect : 1- experience 2- change over period of time 3- describe accomplishement 4- continued action start at the past Extremly useful, Thank you.
Hey! This is a great way to learn the Present Perfect! One thing for students to remember is this; We use the PRESENT PERFECT when we want to talk about an action that has happened ANYTIME before the present. For the SIMPLE PAST we talk about an action that happened at a SPECIFIC point in time (NOT ANYTIME). E.g PRESENT PERFECT - I have never been to England (ANYTIME in my life) vs PAST SIMPLE - I went to England last year (Last year = specific time). We can also use the present perfect to talk about actions that have happened many times in the past. E.g I have been to England 3 times. (In my life).
This video is famous from our english teachers. I had a homework to solve exercises and watch this video and write notes about it. I literally wrote everything she said lol.
@@WatchandLearnEnglish i have been to india is also correct? even if the activity is not continuing because it is an experience? What about Stacey has worked as a teaching assistant for 3 years now. Does that mean that she stopped working as a teacher assistant?
you have researched that video and you found it in a period of time that s why you used present perfect tense in your sentence right? (I'm checking my gramar knowledge about this tense with your comment sorry 😅)
It's used when you want to tell someone you've done something before: I've been to New York. It sometimes automatically has the "already" or "before" meaning in it but you can still use it when you use the present perfect. If you say "I've gone to New York." instead of "I've been to New York." it means you're currently in New York. You can use the present perfect combined with since and for in order to refer to a timespan: (weird example but probably possible) I've been a human since I was born. I've been searching for the solution for 3 years. And that's already all the things I can think of, but I hope that helps.
No. 4 A continuing action that started in the past. Please help me to know the difference in meaning between these two sentences. I have worked here for 5 years.(Present Perfect). I have been working here for 5 years. (Present Perfect Continuous).
The two sentences mean the same thing. However, in the second example (present perfect continuous) you are emphasising the duration more. Check out our video here for more info: ua-cam.com/video/VNFdMHI6XwE/v-deo.html
i have been to india is also correct? even if the activity is not continuing because it is an experience? What about Stacey has worked as a teaching assistant for 3 years now. Does that mean that she stopped working as a teacher assistant?
I need your help! _Sam has worked here for 7 years._ _Sam has been working here for 7 years._ _Sam works here for 7 years._ Would all these sentences be the same thing?
Well, as an English teacher, the sentence: "Sam has worked here for 7 years" (to denote "a continuing action starting in the past") poses a PROBLEM-if not a CONFLICT-& hence, CONFUSION...! There is a CLEAR DISTINCTION between a situation where one is at his CURRENT job or work place & makes such (a SUMMATIVE PAST statement connected to his PRESENT-DAY reality in the place & at the time of his speaking) & another where that same person in NO LONGER working in that company but has "DROPPED BY"/"POPPED IN" to visit his former place of work. In THAT context, time & place, he should then say: "I've worked here for 7 years" (paraphrasing: "This is the place where I've worked for 7 years")! So, DESPITE ANY & ALL grammatical advice/encouragement to use the quoted sentence in my opening statement above. I'd DISCOURAGE English-language users from falling in this CONFUSION TRAP & rather much more PRUDENTLY as well as, PERTINENTLY & JUDICIOUSLY use the sentence in the Present Perfect Continuous tense (I've been working here for 7 years, instead!) to denote an activity which has started in the past & is ONGOING (i.e. continuing to present-day!).
I need your help! Sam has worked here for 7 years. Sam has been working here for 7 years. Sam works here for 7 years. Would all these sentences be the same thing? explain please
