- The Raid franchise consists of two action/martial arts films I've seen in that are based in Indonesia. These films once again prove we cant sleep on foreign language film, because If we do we miss out on great films like these. In my opinion, The Raid and The Raid 2: Berandal are two of, if not the greatest, action films of all time. They completely ruined the way I view many mainstream action films. I would not call it so much as ruin then set the standard for what a good action movie can be
It's a terrible movie. Iko Uwai's martial arts skill is too basic. Nothing like what Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Tony Jaa can do. And Taken 2 is a far better movie than Raid 2.

I fully agree. Foreal the Raid franchise makes other high budget action movies look like highschool film projects. Thats how enormous the gap in skill and quality is.
Yeah man, it just shows that you can't beat real action stars. They can choreograph some great scenes. Pair that with a director who actually knows how to shoot action, it's a match made in heaven.
Definitely. Anytime you take guys who have essentially dedicated aspects of their life to protecting their craft, it will be better. Hollywood actors are more drama oriented, which is why the acting may be better, but the action will probably be worse. The Raid is one of the rare instances where both the action is top teir and the acting is actually pretty decent. So it's just an all around great movie.
And thanks for those extra notes, I didn't know the one about Tsalsim and Mortal Kombat. But it makes total sense. Kinda like how Bruce Lee's moves had to be slowed down in production. Very interesting.

Same thing they had to do with Bruce Lee back in the days. I love the Jon Wick movies too, but American action stars simply just aren't on that same level. 🤷🏾♂️
The budget on The Raid: Redemption was a little over $1M USD. The average budget of MCU films is nearly 20x that, and they are blights on the art of cinema.
I think what blows my mind with The Raid 2 is that its budget was only $4.5m. It's 2 and a half hours in length and is extremely polished looking, with lots of actors, expansive in its sets & locations with complex stunt work, car chase scenes and believable cgi/prosthetics for any gore. There are Hollywood movies that have ten times the budget that don't look as good.
You are not lying at all! This is an extremely well done film given the amount of money they had to work with. It's a true testament to the director, actors who are actual choreographers/stuntmen themselves. The movie is just legendary and this fact is just another reason why. ✊🏾
Maybe because Indonesia rupiah has quite noticeable gap in currency compared to dollars the location, wage rate are quite a favor.
Well, not having to deal with unions is huge. The director mentioned that in the special features in the first movie. Also, Gareth doesn't have any Hollywood big names in either movie. That keeps the cost down big time & also helps with the authenticity of the movies. I'm guessing it's those factors coupled with Indonesians that worked hard at a bargain wage.

to make it better, when The Raid 2 was about to be released, I was invited by the director to their office (was working with a known Indonesian movie magazine back then) and got to know the casts. They are REAL professional martial artists, and they were so humble that the casts didn't even think they were celebs. They arranged choreography themselves too. Simply best people in the industry. Proud of them all.

Jackie Chan nailed it when he said that you don’t have to do as many cuts when the actors really know how to fight.
thats why action fighting movies especially with lots of close quarter combat or bare hand fights have to be played by real martial art user and fighter, of course they need to study about acting but the main focus is the martial arts. while movies these days seems to ignore the martial art skill on actor in action fighting movies. cmiw
Even in John Wick 3 (although I love those movies) having watched The Raid movies made me enjoy the fight in which The Raid's actors appeared far less because I was constantly thinking "man, these dudes can move far faster than this, they are letting Keanu win"

I would argue that The Raid films walked so that the John Wick films could run: Wick did for a mainstream audience what The Raid did for action aficionados as there is now an expectation that an actor can perform an action scene without a movie simply editing around it.
Real fights don't move as fast as they do in kungfu movies. I've worked as a professional bodyguard and even going up against people who genuinely know how to fight, most fights only last a few blows. MMA is a different thing all together. Even then they tend to be over pretty quickly with few exchanges, longer rounds are really the outlier.
I wouldn't say that The Raid ruined action movies for you, but rather that it opened your eyes. Most AAA films nowadays just do the bare minimum for fight scenes. It takes real balls to learn martial arts or other fighting styles.
Yeah you could definitely say that. I've been watching Kung fu/martial arts flicks since I can remember and there have been a few along the way thay have left me stunned. From Jet Li and Fist of Legend, Jackie Chans Legend of the Drunken Master, to Ong Bak. The Raid however, is the one that has yet to be dethroned so far. The bar is really high! ✊🏾

she even does some flips and moves there's choreography for "one hit kill" cheat
then she hits guys bigger than her once and they don't get up...

fun fact: the main villains or "final boss" for raid 1 and 2 got casted as zero's students in john wick 2 but since they were so fast in raid 1 and 2 they had to nerf their speed so they wouldnt overpower john wick in hand to hand combat

one of my juniors in College was part of the Raid 2 production. as part of his (my friend) assignment for his film school. One day I met him in the smoking area looking REALLY REALLY tired so I asked " yo you good man?" he said "Just finished shooting a fight scene of the raid 2. 2 WEEKS FOR A FIGHT SCENE! I'm so F-- ing tired!" I was laughing.
fast forward, some time after the movie was released, I found him again in the smoking area so I said "man that movie was badass! congrats bro! by the way that kitchen fight tho! how awesome it was for you to witness that real time!"
"bro. that was the 2 weeks scene." with a straight face.

The influence of these 2 movies can be seen in every action film since them. John Wick is definitely a child of The Raid.

These movies took me back to the times I first watched Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies as a kid. The fighting is so fluid and focused, I never lose track of where anyone is or what they're doing and all the hits feel so jarringly hard. What makes it better is that the protagonist isn't untouchable. Rama gets hurt constantly and takes a lot of damage and its only his will power that keeps him going. Gives a really gritty feel to the fights, that he could really die at any time if he loses focus.
I completely agree. Bruce Lee and Jackie changed weren't just great martial artists, but they were great choreographers as well. The same goes for Iko Wais, Yayan Ruihan and the choreographers for the raid films. And another great point. Rama definitely felt pretty realistic. He struggled and wore down I'm fights especially in the first film. A great touch becasue it genuinely raises the stakes. Great points, thank you!! 🙏🏾

Jackie got better and better as time pass bye and peak at mid 80s to 90s. There where lot of direct physicality in his actions.His end fight in drunken master 2 was the best fight among all the fight in martial art movies . I didn't think stars nowadays can put up with such physicality like Jackie did until, I saw raid. The cast gave their all for those action and I love them for it.
@Cameron Matlock i have to disagree on that . movie fight and real life fights are completely different ball game. movie fights are choreograph fights so everything is planned so you can put whatever you want and how long you want real fights are short and unplanned.. bruce lee had the most experiance in real life and was also kinda of a bully who always want to fight and prove his dominance , jackie on the other hand came from acrobat theatre where they learn choreograph fights thats why his fights looks so enjoyable but that doesnt mean he isn't tough , the stunts he did and the damage he has taken is insane. he is one tough son of a gun and he also had street fights and knows lots of type of martial arts . he and bruce lee are of same height and weight so we have a fight in there with bruce lee having the upper hand . its like bruce would win the first fight. lko on the other hand is not in the same lv of these two . there is a lot of speed and power missing here

Some of my Indonesian friends that are practicing and teaching silat said that Silat is basically a martial art that created to take your opponents life as fast and as effective as possible and it's almost impossible to implement it as a sport without strict regulations because how fatal and dangerous an actual silat techniques are. And i think The Raid really success on showing how deadly the martial arts can be when it used in a real life setting without any rules and regulations

Agree..many forms of silat move is targetting lethal point of the body for kill the opponent quickly. Thats all move banned from sports. Silat sport just allow using simply un lethal move kicks, punch, grapling, takedown.
Some of the move in this film is so inspired by traditional movement in silat. Not sport silat

It is deadly. I've trained in aikido and silat and let me tell you in silat combat you are strapped with very thicccc protector and if you kick someone head you would lose points. Also in official combat we are limited to 6 attacks move before the referee stop us. Also girls are somewhat more ruthless in these competitions.

With certain silat techniques, I can kill an mma fighter with just a strike. Easily. MMA doesn't teach you to rip the throat of your opponent off, nor gauge your opponent's eyes off. Nor breaking your opponent's bones and render him paralyzed forever, or even death. Silat does teach you that. Silat teaches you on how to kill your opponents any ways possible, not that mcgregor bullshit mma sport shows on tv. it's not a sport, it's not even what you can simply call as a martial art. it's an art of war, an art of killing your enemies. of course you can't compare mma for fun/sport to an art specially used to truly kill without mercy such as silat.
Two other things about the Raid movies that make them more believable for me; one, Rama takes his lumps throughout the entire movie both times. He doesn't just coast through the minions and only break a sweat for the boss battle, he gets the snot beaten out of him every step of the way and has to really fight for his life throughout. Further, you really get a sense of remorse from him when he has to kill someone; that haunted look in his eyes every time is a signature element of his character as a God-fearing man who hates having to end someone's--anyone's--life. He is not a machine, he has emotions and feelings and I like that about Rama.
I watched this and I'm like man... I miss movies like this where CGI doesn't take up most of the action scenes.
Yeah man, the choreographers and actors are actual martial artists, huge bonus when it comes to how the action sequences look. Less CGI, less strings, more fluidity. Can't beat it!

as an Indonesian, it's quite fun that the raid franchise are still being talked about to this day.
I remember in 2011 at the theater I saw the poster of the raid 1 film and looked at it cynically and thought this was a "cheap" film. Honestly, I'm sorry and happy that I was wrong about that, lol. and about Raid 2 though i was quite "anxious" for fear it would spoil the quality of the raid 1 and again i glad i was wrong again.
now i quite understand why gareth evans was quite careful with raid 3 projects (he neither vehemently denied nor will make a third) yeah because these two films are at the top level for the action genre.
These films definitely deserve to be talked about, probably more than they are! I felt the same with The Raid 2, but in my opinion it only ended up being better than the first film! Im happy to say Indonesia is home to the best martial arts/action film ive seen. '✊🏾
I tought the same will happen as was with Banlieu 13 and it will just be seen as something cool that happened in a lower note. It was nice to see it really become mainstream, it mostly did because there was no action film coming from hollywood so they put money behind Raid when it started to blow up.

I think one of the reason why the Raid is better in terms of your typical Hollywood blockbuster action is that instead of casting a popular/marketable actor and telling them to choreograph certain moves, it's the other way around, the actor was cast based in large part for their martial art skills. Like a lot of the main actors in the raid was/is actually a professional martial artists and not necessarily known for their career in showbiz. kind of like the kungfu movies in the 90s
I don't understand how the director / writer of the Raid movies Gareth Evans hasn't had a big break in Hollywood yet, he's leagues ahead of so many more famous directors

I remember hearing that old martial arts movies used a wide angle lens and very few cuts to save money, but it ended up making their action scenes far superior to American action movies at the time (using actual martial artists rather than Hollywood actors undoubtedly helped to).
The Raid movies (totally agree, they are my favorite action and martial arts movies of all time) are what happens when a director and cinematographer follow in the spirit of those old kung-fu movies but use modern cinematography techniques sparingly and with discipline to enhance, rather than detract, from the action.
Really top level stuff.
I beleive that. Every old school Kung fu movie looks that way. I also think they knew they had actual martial artists who could perform the moves. Less need for all these different cuts and angles.

They're talking about the old kung fu movie techniques which resembles or even adopted into/by the raid movie camera technique & choreography, they're not talking about the martial arts used in the raid.

That fight with the assassin will forever be the greatest martial arts sequences I've ever seen.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the soundtrack representing both ramas desperation and determination.
For example in that assassin fight, when the assassin pulls out his karambits, you can see rama repeatedly attempt to disarm him, and every time he fails the music gets more chaotic, but as soon as Rama finally gets control of one of the blades, the music gets more controlled and bombastic as Rama gains the ability to kill the assassin
I think. Its definitely one of them if not the best. This is such a great observation though. I think musical scores are often some of the most forgotten about aspects in film. That is also an all time favourite for me. The music is just perfect, the skills are impeccable and the desperation at the end is legendary.

What I like about the choreography is that almost every fight scene is trying to make it realistic. Like in some fighting movies we have this protagonist somehow always have eyes on the back of their head when an enemies attack them from behind. The raid fixes that with the fighters always look first before attacking, Also in the raid you, you can see that the main character is always like waving around his hand anticipating for a block or a dodge to make the scene like he is not a superhero that know exactly when or where to parry and counter for the next move. Also when you watched a fighting scene when you have multiples enemies around you. Somehow in the background there will always be idling waiting to attack, the raid successfuly trying to eliminate all the cost of that idle and making every enemy always have some action to do like running towards the protagonist or any kind of action to make it seem that they are not just waiting and idling in the background.
The art of fighting in this movie is great and I love it.
I've always been into martial arts and action movies, my entire life. I'm 43 now and about 15 years ago when this movie came out my high school girlfriend sent me a message. We broke up on bad terms and hadn't spoken in over 12 years, but she felt it was necessary to contact me after she saw this in the theater in Texas. All she said was "You need to see this movie". I thank her every time I watch a Sagawa action movie now.
The Raid came out in the high time of superhero films, and yet blew away so many minds. Till it kinda became a subgenre of action films. It's amazing and incredible!
I agree. At first I thought I just liked it because there was nothing out there like it at the time, but here we are almost 15 years later and it's still the pinnacle for me.
was always interesting to me the similarities of the raid and dredd (the good one)- apparently they both began development the same time iirc and it was just a weird chance.

@@tryingtotryistryingcame out before superhero films became giant lol. It came out before Iron Man 1, and it wasn't really until the first Avengers that superhero movies became so immensely popular.
I'm editing this to be more clear- I disagree with you. avengers broke records for sure, but superman, batman, spiderman, blade, the X-Men and I'm sure more I'm forgetting about were all major movie SERIES (which don't normally get made unless they're popular/profitable and those aren't cheap to make) some decades before avengers. Batman got McDonalds in the Batmobile- doesn't get more mainstream popular than that, right? avengers really succeeded at hyping itself up as a big event, which is cool but yeah it was just the most recent and benefited from having social media behind it where the other movies were too early to have that.

The director already said regarding this in an interview that he has moved on from this chapter of his life. So I guess slim chance it's gonna happen.
However, he kind of gives some spoiler if The Raid 3 ever gonna happen, it's gonna be located in jungle and involve some martial artist who trained in deep jungle.

After seeing this film really affecting you, even your taste on action movies and bare minimum for action movies. I think I should see more action movies and I really underestimate the raid series. Thank you
I remember watching on the day it come out, the movie come out along winter soldier, but almost no one watching the marvel film, that alone is already amazing in my opinion, but the most amazing thing I ever experienced at the cinema, is when the last duel in the kitchen scene ended, there's a moment of silence and everyone genuinely clapping their hands, some even standing up, even though that's not the end of the movie, but really, amazing experience
raid 2 kitchen scene is pretty much unmatched.. however “the night comes for us” as an entire piece may be my favorite action film from Iko and his team
You know I'm not even mad at that. Another great film. The only reason I consider The Raid films above that is becasue it captures the same level of action while feeling mostly grounded in reality. The Night Comes For Us definitely feels like I'm watching a movie as some of the action is outlandish..lol. Just my opinion though and still an amazing film!! ✊🏾

These people above expecting TNCFU to be a same thing with The Raid, while what they were trying to do was a whole different thing, it's on you if it didn't live up to your expectations. TNCFU made by whole different director, another artist that obviously has his own style and approach from Gareth Evans. Everyone else knows Timo Tjahjanto works from the very beginning has always included over the top violence and gore, heck his first feature was a slasher flick (co-directed with Kimo Stamboel). TNCFU tried to incorporate martial arts action with slasher and body horror, with the main character being this beast monster like in a horror movie, and the movie did what it was trying to do. TNCFU never tried to be like The Raid films, and will never be like one, it's basically a whole different concept while having the similar DNA.
i feel like a lot of action movies actor when they do combat scenes, they dont look tired at all. But in this movie you can see it clearly the struggle, the effort, and the tired face of the characters when they fight
Exactly and this is one of the best aspects of this film. You can tell when the characters are getting tired or fighting off of adrenaline. Or fighting composed. Most action films there is one speed for everything.
you know what.. the struggle, then combined with the camerawork, it's really make their tired face really really believeable, and made me tired as well while watching the movie haha.
i mean i can't forget how the raid is different from other action movies, because i can feel the punch, i can feel how tired the fight, it just like i'm watching there in the movie.
the movie is trying to look like it's real, they want you to "feel" a fight/movie, not just watch a fight/movie

According to my Indonesian friend who recommended the first film to me and to our fellow martial enthusiasts in college. We were told that most, if not, all of the stunt actors in the films were people who have experience with some form martial arts, that's why the execution of the moves were well choreographed (which we absolutely loved and were stunted from any brutal move/moments shown, incl. the moments of fatigue/injuries as you've stated).
This really does takes me back, I look forward to rewatch the first film and its sequel (I haven't watched the latter).

My eyes were opened when I first saw raid redemption as a kid. We bought the movie from our local bootlegger. We would pick one movie for each family member and when it was my dad's turn he picked up this little gem- Changed my view on action movies for ever

Ive seen some of the 'making of' and choreography vids for the Raid 1+2 and the skill of Iko Uwais is incomparable. What a beast for real, a true master of his craft. Seeing the work that goes into those scenes makes them even more epic to watch in the films.
Yes the skill of him and Yaya are essentially what made the movie what it is. They choreographed most of the main fight sequences.
I have yet not seen any action movies better then the Raid series, it's a shame they didn't make Part 3

Gareth Evans, the director, presumably considered that The Raid 1 and 2 CANNOT be topped by another sequel. His plan to make The Raid 3 was consequently cancelled.
You should watch "The night comes for us" another movie by Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim, a different story with similar quality to The Raid.

I love the first movie because of just how simple the story is.
A high rise apartment full of criminals and the boss is at the very top.
It sort of relates to video games which most of us have experienced before.
The apartment floor levels are like mini stages and mini bosses in our games.
And the final boss fight is there as well. So good.
I think one of the things that really blew my mind was, I think in an interview, they were talking about the fight between the Sgt and mad dog. There was a tad bit of conflict in that both actors had two different skill sets when it came to martial arts and instead of having the actors learn completely different fighting techniques and styles they blended the knowledge of both into that fight scene. Overall the raid movies were definitely one of the dopest things my eyes ever had the pleasure of watching.
Most of the actor are martial artist, the mad dog himself is a silat master(indonesian martial art), iko uwais is former martial art athlete and joe taslim is a former international judo athlete for indonesia national team, that's why they look so natural

Watched both and I'm all aboard with the arguments you laid out. Although I wholeheartedly appreciate the carefully crafted spectacle of pt. 2, and the effort they also put in making the story a bit more complex this time, I'm gravitating more towards the pt. 1, and its raw, dirty, simple but effective structure. The 1st Raid is a masterpiece of "less is more", or "show, don't tell", where the plot is extremally easy to follow, giving more room to enjoy the exquisite action pieces it has to offer.
I don't think I can successfully argue against the 1st being the superior film for all of the reasons you've laid out. I think while the movies follow the same characters, similar direction styles, and even continue the story, they are completely different films. Both great in their own ways.
I personally gravitate towards the 2nd a bit more because I liked the more complex story, and I also think the direction and fight scenes are a bit more memorable as hard as that may be to believe.
Both are a cut above the rest though, I know that much! ✊🏾
I completely agree, when I first watch The Raid as a teenager I was completely blown away.. Of how fluid the fight scenes were.. Raid 2 even magnify it even more... Now everytime I watch an action film I look to see how many cuts the fight scenes will have and how fluid and natural the fights will look
The Raid movies are among my top films to recommend to others, and I don't believe we would have films like John Wick and Nobody had they never been made.
I agree. Jon Wick is one of the few American films that holds up and I think that's because it was greatly influenced by The Raid films. ✊🏾
Completely agree and the following seals your point: I've heard that in the premiere of the movie, the cinema equipment failed so Iko and the assassin actor performed the final fight on stage and looked so great and realistic that people broke on applause. That's how well the perform. Looks good even in person.

I thought _The Raid_ was so good that I was a bit apprehensive about the sequel, thinking it could never live up to the first one. But wow - I thought _Raid 2_ was significantly better, and the bar was already set so high!

To be honest, I prefer the final fight in The Raid than the Raid 2. Rama seems so skilled that he has the upper hand most of the time in the fight against Assassin, whom should be a fearsome enemy.
Nevertheless, it was indeed one of the best martial arts movie and a worthy sequel to The Raid
Thats a good point. There's a little less drama becasue he's pretty much in charge most of the battles. I can't really judge them on which is better. I think they both are great fight scenes. More drama in Raid 1 final scene, better choreography and cinematography in The Raid 2 final fight. Idk they're both excellent scenes.

Raid 1 was ground breaking. Raid 2 was earth shattering.
Totally agree with everything you said, and a couple of things to add: use of wider camera angles helps us to understand how each shot relates to each other and the environment, and the shaky hand-held camera is there but it works because of how it moves with the action and the impacts in the fight
The camera work is amazing! They track movements that make me feel more immersed. The scene where they cut through the floor follows the axe, and when Iko regains consciousness the camera stays locked to his frame of view. Saw the raid three times in the theater when it came out and there were not many people there but the audience was floored.

Sometimes I watch (not many though) people complain on yt about the plot. While valid, IMO the plot in this premise only needs to provide context and continuity. It doesn't have to be mind blowing in terms of the plot. Otherwise, I'd rather watch a sci-fi or even thriller movie.
The only good recent Hollywood movies regarding fight scene (bar John Wick franchise) is Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was also influenced by The Raids.
I couldn't agree more. I think I agree the plot of The Raid, the first film is simple, but it's also really effective. It's a thrill ride from beginning to end. Raid 2 is a bit more complicated, but I think it works. It's got a better story than many action films out there.

These are absolutely two of my favorite movies. This was my favorite martial arts franchise since Ong-Bak. The influence of The Raid movies is felt in Atomic Blonde and John Wick too.

Thanks for putting voice to the thoughts in my head re: The Raid franchise. They are top tier peak action / art due to all of the things ( fighting skill, characters, camera work, choreography, music, editing ) that were executed with such care and detail. I try to get awareness of this series out to as many people as I can ; it deserves that and more.
It's truly my pleasure and I feel the same way. When I first saw these movies they instantly became some of my favorites. Anytime someone asks for a reccomendation of a great action film, it's the first one I tell them about.
The final fight scene in The Raid 2 is literally breathtaking.
I advise anyone who hasn’t seen that film to refrain from watching clips, and instead watch it in it’s entirety in one sitting. Experiencing the way each subsequent fight scene increases in intensity is one of the greatest cinematic experiences you will ever have.

The Raid films are truely revolutionary. I remeber the early days of Jackie c, Donnie yen and Tony jaa. Alot of the action classics followed the same principle with not overly cutting the sequences. It totally makes all the difference and you get to actually see the choreography in the purest form. Tony Ja's "the protector" film is a great example of this. Awesome vid bro! Keep it up 👍
Yeah I think what The Raid has going for it ultimately is the direction. The films do a really good job of blending style, without compromising the action. It feels fresh and updated. Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen and Jaa are all legends as well, but as an example The Protector when it came out was revolutionary. But at almost 15 years later some of it doesn't hold up as well. Mainly the story, the acting and the direction. The choreography and Action is still great though. And to your point about the massive amounts of cuts in action movies, the no cut stair scene in The Protector is one of the best of all time.

Worst thing about that Taken fight scene is how often the 180 degree rule is broken for no good reason at all. Sometimes Liam is on the left side, sometimes on the right. There's no spinaroonee of the camera or of the characters to warrant that side switching.

As Indonesian, its a common thing that me/ourself under apreciate our own action movies domesticly. Due it's cheap budget and our experience to make good movies or to be consider a great one, its not like Hollywood ect.. But i begin grown of optimism when i see Iko Uwais first action movie at Merantau. That is where his martial arts and career starting to shine. Then Raid shows up. Your insight and analysist be such an opening eyes for me too. This review changed my perspective and wisdom personally. Thank you. (sorry for bad spelling & grammars).
100%. I’m surprised how unknown this film is still. I’ve said it as well. This has raised the bar. I remember opening day of Raid 2. There was only 3 people total in the theater.

I watched both movies at the cinema...incredible. part 2 was INSANE. the fight in the kitchen got a round of applause from whole cinema. Possibly best martial arts scene ever
I had the pleasure of seeing both in theaters as well and til this day not sure if any action movie experience has topped this one. And I agree, the kitchen scene should be taught in school somewhere, but to be honest a lot of scenes in this franchise could be. The Alleyway scene in Raid 2, the final fight in Raid 1. All brilliant.

The same team did another movie "the Night Comes for Us," that is honestly, an even split between an action movie and a horror movie. The injuries are so freaking graphic, Eli Roth beats off to it. A glorious continuation of the Raid traditions is excellence
When I first saw The Night Comes For Us, I was worried, because I didn't want to look at those actors or characters differently if it was trash. But boy I was worried for nothing because that movie was amazing too. Definitely more of less realistic, comic book kinda vibe, but wonderful action sequences nonetheless and extremely violent. Eli Roth forsure has it cued up before bedroom activities.

Great video, The Raid blew my frikkin mind in the cinema when it came out.... I'd never seen anything like it, and I agree that hardly any other action films have come close to the level of The Raid films
Gareth Evans is the most underrated director out there. Since the first raid movie came out, so many other directors have learned a lot about the story within a story aspect of fight sequences. He got a chance to show this again in the hyper violent Gangs of London. Some of the fight scenes (and the entire ‘cottage’ episode) were incredible. It’s no wonder Tom Hardy was so enthusiastic about working with him on their upcoming Netflix movie.

The scenes in each fight in this film are very detailed, like seeing a fight that has emotions even though it's just acting. I appreciate and agree that The Raid 1 & 2 films are very good. Every move, music, effects, colors, camera, crew and more, all played out in detail.
Even I pay attention to the small details in every second, it's lifelike and nuanced real life.

John Wick’s fight scene is not convincing. I like Keanu but he doesn’t make it look good or even close to realistic, you can tell he’s just acting.
I don't know much about personal life of the director or whether he had in-depth help and insight on the world of violence. But you can tell the movie was made by people who know what it's like to actually fight in real life which is what makes it the best action film in terms of realism. It's getting a glimpse into the world most people will never experience or want to. Almost like a mini documentary along for the ride of a story.

The Raid director was obsessed with Asian and martial arts films when he was growing up. He basically knows every film. He was also big anime fan. He learnt how to make films by watching many films

No more Raid 3. The director Gareth Evans has cancelled the sequel because he thought The Raid 1 and 2 cannot be topped by another sequel. Understandable, better this way than ruining the whole franchise.
What's interesting is that while there is a lot of camera shake in these fight scenes it's not the same "shaky cam" that's often used as a crutch in typical action movies. It adds frenetic energy but the camera focus is still clearly on the people in the fight scene. It almost makes it feel like you are a combatant in one of the scenes, ducking and weaving or getting knocked around, while at the same time having to keep laser-like focus on what's going on. Whereas I feel like intent anymore with most shaky cam is to actually obscure the action. This allows for lazier choreography and does things like making it easier to hide stunt doubles, etc. I really feel like using shaky cam and enough jump cuts it wouldn't be too difficult to make a fight scene with random people that don't know the first thing about actual fighting.
FD Signifier pointed me your way I love your thoughts about this film franchise. As another person who enjoys international action films, the Raid's energy, choreography and overall intent to give more excitement with minimal cuts makes many North American fight scenes pale in comparison (at times, not all the time since films films like the Undisputed franchise, and even Shang Chi, still cut the mustard). I love these films and hopefully you'll do more martial arts related content in the future.
One thing to note for lots of Asian filmmakers (and non-Asians who dabble in action like Gareth Evans, Michael Jai White, Chad Stahelski, etc), one of the biggest keys as to why these kinds of action films are good is because the film crew, production crew, directors and choreographers all ways film the action with the cuts and edits already in their heads. Back in the 80s and 90s for North American martial arts action sometimes, directors with no action experience just force the actors to shoot one fight in 1 angle, and the same fight in the other angle, and again and again, and then they'd splice it up. :(
Well thanks for stopping by and also dropping a great comment. I want my channel to focus on a lot of films, but also movies that may not get much shine otherwise. Which will include martial arts films from all over. I feel like it's a genre that rarely gets looked at from an analytical perspective.
But you're also right in regards to how the films are shot. I think North American mainstream action films tend to care more about the typical stuff people like to see as opposed to being innovative and creative. The Raid franchise was shot in such a creative way and that's what changes it from good action to great action. I will definitely be touching on more action/martial arts films in the near future. The Raid films were my gold standard top tier… and then came along John Wick. And when those two dudes (you know who I mean) showed up in John Wick i was shitting myself with excitement. I didnt cate who they were in the John Wick universe, i only knew them as the dudes in The Raid.
1 thing about 1st movie that i really like,where most action movies(especially martial art) never really do is how the protagonist is shown to be scared. the part where rama n his friend hiding from machete gang leader n when he running away from them are example of that
I agree. You could tell Rama would have ran first if he could have. Only using his martial arts as a necessity. Not only smart filmmaking, but true filmmaking. 👍🏽
The brutality is unreal. This is the only movie that even after rewatching and knowing that it's a movie, I still grimace.
What I notice is also the sound design in the fight, you always feels the weight and mostly quiet otherwise, or the bgm is not intrusive.
I guess when they say fight is gruesome and feral, you get the raid
I agree 100 percent here. I still feel the stakes when I'm watching this even though I know what's going to happen. I think the brutality has a lot to do with that as it really feels like these dudes are fighting for their lives. A true testament to the choreography and direction. ✊🏾
Age ain't really an issue, just look at Jackie Chan as he only started to reduce / to slow down on doing the stunts by himself when he was around 45 to 50-ish but still hasn't fully stopped on doing so, even in "The Foreigner" (2017) he still did some of his own stunts.

2 minutes into THE vid I noticed the Props of Silver/Chrome Bats are used instead of Wooden ones to further Emphasize the Directions of where those swings are headed for more clarity of the fight. like an animated slash in an Anime or like the Lightsabers from star wars.
I think it also helps that Gareth Evans edits the movies himself. Also, both movies look 100x what their budget is.
I love the raid movies especially the first one, it felt like a psychological horror movie with a lot of action, something not easy to accomplish but Raid did it and surprised us. Still better than any high budget Hollywood movie like marvel movies.

Raw, brutal, uncomfortable and uncompromising. This is why this is my favorite martial arts/action franchise.
I don't bother watching action films that have so many cuts. I've grown to love Indonesian action films, especially those featuring Iko, for their brutality not just in terms of blood but in their cinematography.
Yeah I dont mind watching action movies or scenes that do have tons of cuts. Like I mentioned parts of me still even enjoys those Liam Neeson films which have a billion cuts. The thing is, I would never be able to look at them the same as I would a movie like The Raid. Its just leagues above those other films. So while I can still watch American action films they have been ruined in the sense that I'm always comparing them in the back of my head.

I grew up loving a bunch of American action classics, and I'd be interested to see if they land the same way now. Die Hard and The Terminator, among many Arnie films, are the shit I loved when I watched them with my dad as a child. We watched so many of the films that made the cast of the Expendables films famous. I know The Expendables franchise isn't awesome, but I still love going to watch every one of them with my dad. We still go to every new Rambo. One of the highlights of my adult life was showing him the first John Wick and seeing every sequel with him.
I've just channelled my inner child who now has money and told my dad I'm shouting him tickets and snacks to go see the fourth Expendables film this weekend. As a film, I don't expect much. As a nostalgic bonding experience, I can't fucking wait and he's stoked, too.

you are right at one key thing, do not cut away when an action is being done. Another secret of a compelling action sequence is using wide shot to show the whole thing, no shaky camera preferably.
I am a production assistant from HK, what I see is that nobody make good action films now.

Agree but I think one aspect you didn't touch on with the taken vs raid fight scenes was movement and physicality. The taken scene the actors are static and it dosent feel that Liam uses his size to move the other character at all. In the raid the movement is always dynamic using space and distance for advantage or to move multiple enemies in front of each other so he only has to fight one at a time.
One of the best action scenes of all time with well rounded skills from fancy kicks all the way to grappling!
Not even Ip Man series and Jet Li's Fist of Legend can match the action sequences of The Raid films and John Wick movies seem mundane, cheesy and like a joke in its close quarter combat scenes!
Donnie Yen's Flashpoint and SPL comes the closest as they feel very realistic but they sorta lack the creative defensive skills and usage of their environment against their opponents as well as the level of violence and aggression compared to The Raid films!
Very great take here. I think Fist of Legend and Ip Man are great in their own right, but I think where The Raid edges them out for me is in its believable. The moves feel realistic and the choreography is top notch. Fist of Legend came out in an era where they used tons of strings and effects, where as the Raid just feels all natural.
And I surprisingly haven't seen SPL yet. I'll have to check that out!

I agree man. I seen these raid movies YEARS and years ago. Movies like John wick might be one of the few only mainstream Hollywood movies that TRY and make the fighting look real.
Definitely. I still like a lot of the action films we see in mainstream cinema, but none of them compare on a serious level
There are some cool techniques I've heard about in these movies.
1. They shoot for the edit, which means they plan out the edits ahead of time and shoot for that. I guess some movies don't necessarily plan out all the edits before shooting. Shooting for the edit seems to result in less cuts, which is outlined in this video. Cool stuff!
2. They drop frames when hits connect. makes them more impactful.
I could be wrong about these, but I remember seeing some commentary on the corridor digital channel about it.
I just bought the Raid 1 & 2 on digital..man those movies are absolute classics !!

I feel like Chad studied the Raid Franchise throughly before doing John Wix, there was so many similarities in the direct action.
I think he had to. When you care about making something great, you have to look at other great things. John Wick definitely has its own vibe, but I see the influence and similarities forsure. John Wick 2 or 3, I cant remember right now, even has Yaya (the short crazy dude from the first raid) in the movie. So I know they've seen The Raid films.
I was 13 when the first Raid movie came out, and even at that age, I wanted to make movies- for a long time, I considered The Matrix my standard for movie action, but when I saw the Raid, that changed.
I don’t know if you know this but this movie is based off Bruce lees movie game of death, but I do believe the raid did it better for sure.
