Magnetite is a crystaline structure that grows behind the beak where the bird was raised. It does not work like a compass, the dendrites in the mucous membrane surrounding magnetite give it a feeling for the direction of home. When they circle the feeling is stronger in one direction.

I would recommend it. You should see my "learning the roof video". If you already have some birds that are trained to your loft, you can sometimes just throw the new birds up in the air when the older birds are already circling.

I've been listening to all what you said and I understand them all.
Thank you very much for your advice.

@Skipigeon Thank you for the clarification on this matter. I had only heard briefly about the theory and obviously uncertain about the details.

    Hello Newpigeon Guy,
Hi, I've seen yr Vids and there great. Just wanted to ask u, I've got 2 young pigeons about 6 wks old & 2 doves about 3mths old.
I've had them now for 4 wks in total, sitting in the Avriay at the bottom of my garden, where they can see out.
What I wanted to know is, when can I let them out, knowing they will return & not fly away. As far as I know they have been never let out before.
    Many thanks, Abs.

two feedings. one in the morning and one in the evening. Just pick a time that is convenient for you and stick with it. once and a while I will get in an afternoon flight and feed them a light snack for lunch

I put them up there for an hour before feeding time. that way they know that they can come into the loft and feed as soon as they here the dinner bell (or breakfast).

I'm not completely certain about the fancy pigeons. I have had a roller before and it has homed from about 15 miles away but it was following my homers at the time. Other wise she would make it home consistently from about 6 miles away. If they have only known your loft more than likely they will come back to where their home is and where food is. But I definitely would not take them away on a drop and would only let them out at their door so they know where to return.

after they have all been out one at a time and back into the loft for trapping time (feeding) then you can let them out as an entire flock.

about 4 weeks. then you never let them all out at one time. let one out at a time so that they can get used to the area. if you let them all out at once they will start circling around your house and take off.

I Also Have pigeons And I'm 14. This is How I Keep My Pigeons Distance trained
    1. I Cut Their One Side Of feathers. (Cut Them Not Pull because if you pull them they will grow again).
    2. Keep Them Like This For 1 months with its partner like male and female
    3. after that i pull their feathers and when they come again after 1 month and when they re grew and pigeons start to fly and in the morning they go out and come back at after noon, they feed and and then flew out and return at evening :P
