    I go to my near mountains and get totes full of granite wash sand from the bottom of the wash in the canyon and pine branches for their nest. The old pencil thick or smaller branches that accumulate around the bottom of the pine trees. The Granite wash sand act as grit and to keep the bottom of the loft nice.

    I really want a Domestic Pigeon when I get a place with more room for one. I like the white ones with black spots :) Do I need a license to own one? They're so cute :) There are a couple all Grey Pigeons with thick white rings on their necks that live my yard who come when I feed them and let me approach them :3

      What country do you live in? Here in USA you don't need a permit, pigeons are cool animals and make great pets. Stay away from wild breeds and get domestic breeds they do much better in captivity.. althought.. they can fly away and come back so.. its voluntary captivity as they always return home if they have racing pigeon in them. I love pigeons.. cool birds. watch my videos for more info on birds.

      I've had them single paired lay three fertile candled after four days eggs, but rare, heard of four egg layers in damascene and high flying tippletts I think was, but it's some Gene they carry rarely down line. Usually over stresses hens, but I'd think a layer ration only constantly provided would work. If had tumbler breeds of fosters take five eggs together and raise on layer no prob but all huge Fatty's (maybe great for endurance but maybe bad for speed I dunno).

      @@annag3904 sadly I've got dominant fertile females that do that and will mount fertile cocks as well even, bobbing bowing cooing even (ferals mixes rollers). It's frustrating because people want or get, but keep telling me they know by many different tests n traits they are male.. I have to tell them I've actually tested keeping these females separated from other birds after mated then they produced one to three eggs that candled fertile hatched and raised to fledge,or I wouldn't believe either. Pigeons are the pet hobbyists wild cards.

    • @homingpigeonraces
      @homingpigeonraces  8 років тому +1

      this is very bad. its going to die. there is not coming back from this disease you must kill the animal so it doesn't suffer anymore. make sure it doesn't make contact with other birds because it will spread and make other birds sick. you need to improve loft conditions and sanitation if your gonna continue keeping pigeons.

    • @DuneDemon8
      @DuneDemon8 7 років тому +7

      It can be nervous stage of salmonella or paramixovirus, or even vitamin deficiency. To kill a bird is a bad advice. if you have such occurrence in the future, separate the bird, hand feed, support with vitamins, especially A and E. If the droppings are big pool of water with a little thin feces with no white urates then it is paramixovirus. Bird must be isolated for 8 weeks. It will heal spontaneously after 3-4 weeks but you need to hand feed it and give it electrolytes during the process. You must keep strict isolation and hygiene as the disease is very contagious. You must vaccinate your birds, but not the sick ones. if you birds are not vaccinated then it is most probably salmonella. Norfloxacine for adults and doxycixline for babies is the best solutions, remove minerals but give vitamins. It is possible for young birds to recover even when salmonella goes it to nerve stage, I have a proof at home, she even had 2 sets of chicks do far.

      Is it a rescued feral, unwanted performance or show bird someone gave you, what does it look like (bald, fuzzy, quills, feathers coming in/just unfurling or fourth out to half out, or is if mostly feathered to completely feathered except maybe under wing/"armpit" which is last to feather in and usually shows ready to be separated from parents into young bird loft)? Cheap natural layer pellets are great easy broken down nutrition if you cannot get it to Eat on own temp, being slid down ITS right side of back of throat, NOT yours, water in plastic dropper same way, feed and water in different proportions Mike's if not getting feather quills in at least fourth of way yet.

      @@annag3904 straw breeds mold toxic to pigeons and also strep bacteria ect parasites and pest insects and attracts rodents, extremely bad as well generally especially for their delicate respiratory systems. I just scrape bare wood or concrete, or thought of using play sand (made round n buffed so no sharp edges to hurt children's eyes nose ears mouth throat ect, n decent pigeon grit supposedly), but otherwise like nesting material, gravel granite pine needles pine shavings (cedar also proven toxic in situations, and attracts moths beetles, wood peckers ravens some owls tiny birds mice squirrel and foxes that use cedar for their nests, so apparently not always toxic to everything), or good kept fresh hay (greenish to whitish tint dried, never grey or brown) are all excellent bedding and nesting materials. I've heard horse ect sanitary pelleted bedding is best cheapest out there, but I'm hesitant because I mix pellets in with my other types of feed, so not sure about impaction and heard anything about on DVM or racing ect forums, except that it binds rabbits up and they've died from, blocking cattle horses guinea pigs and chickensup sometimes temp bad, so I'm not chancing.

      some fancy breeds do this its normal. however, in racing pigeons it can be a sign something is wrong. or it could just be afraid to be held by a human. watch a video called pigeon health for new breeders on my channel. if you flip the bird upside down by the legs while holding it properly.. it should try to escape if it just sits there bad sign, again.. each breed is diffrent. do you know the breed?

      Sometimes it's submission too but it'd squeaker coo hoot or grunt if reaction to something, but yeah, like homing pigeon races said the "neck shaker breeds and mutts do this most of time, unless it's moving head as doing ("neck shakers", I forget what type of middle eastern name translated from, do not move heads as shake necks), if it's not just dipping bowing or putting head under wing, it's sick scared or trying to show you it's submitting to you as it's mate to bond (possibly might dip it's head also to show bonding. Look up wry neck, but don't assume it's as serious add have to cull, as that as many temp benign in long term ailments like nutritional deficiencies fixed quick n easy ect. If I'm bad sharing, lemme know, as I like coming on otherwise as your show good, friendly, informative specific to good homing racing pigeons (I just know some simple lil things generally, as couldnt find even decent homer people here hardly, got lots into roller show types and feral rescue, having to learn ins and out of them n their specific needs ect to treat better). Racers are where it's at through n through though!

    Just got two pairs of homing pigeons and one oddball out the guy threw in called a "powder" pigeon? He said my grandson would enjoy her. I "think" it is a "her". He said that one hasn't flown yet. The other pigeons don't like her so far, and she seems thin. I may have to seperate her so she can get fed well for a while. The other pigeons are fat. I bought them from an organic farm. First time w pigeons. Have had chickens. Brought the pigeons home last night and put them in a large dog kennel in the house for the night. Later will go in a spare chicken coop outside. I can't tell who is married to who, and wonder if I actually got two mated pairs, or just four pigeons. The man picked them out specifically. I don't even know what's going on with them, but they coo once in a while. Have read up on basic pigeon care and I got all the stuff for them. A bit easier than chickens, I think. Except for the "flying home" part.
    Still don't know if they have figured out the food and water. They look healthy. I want them to make babies and I am reading that they do that in Spring and Fall. It is Fall right now. I'm hoping to make a couple starter flocks for my Dad and a friend so we can fly pigeons to each other as a hobby.

      if you think your going to make money breeding pigeons you don't know what your talking about. not saying its impossible but its rare. most people wont buy from you unless you have a racing record, and you wont obtain that without spending huge sums.

      Julia A. Torjusen it’s coccidiosis and it’s caused from rainy days of rain enters the pigeon lifts they’ll start to get watery droppings. When this happens put apple cider vinigar 5ML per gallon twice a week to prevent this. Apple cider vinegar will cure all diseases

      these people want everything for free. its a way of saying NO. I don't sell pigeons it pisses me off all these people want you to give them something for free go to the pigeon mall and order a pigeon online don't ask me. its so annoying daily several people asking me for free pigeons wtf do they think you know? its annoying. just look at these comments, two people on this video asking for free pigeons... that's on every video.. I am about to start blocking people who ask me for free pigeons.

    • @homingpigeonraces
      @homingpigeonraces  8 років тому

      just notice how after you give them a price they say "god bless you".. they don't really want to buy anything they just want to see what they can get out of you for free. But I have been doing these videos for a long time I know how they are and how they behave. They act like good people to get free birds than they sell them once they have em.

      I think he was kidding in comment, and that was hilarious! I've seen racers with pigeons that were extremely affectionate, and others who couldn't look directly at theres and partly why they fostered because racers we're to nervous to do on own. They got odd tiny personalities. My new young homers won't go near the fancy droppers on roof, but I toss out rescued ferals and they are down like magnets and they come to me, but not if buddy out there ect, and one feral loves me one buddy, my dogs, a game cock, and one old murderous cat, but if other people dogs cats chickens or pigeons come around back porch when she released, she dives for their eyes and claws at as hovers then wing beats hooting when they hide (if another cat or neighbors dogs try messing with old cat, who helped raise keeping her warm in loft when young, gets attacked, "junior" circles hooting grunting clapping and dive bombing, repeats distracting whatever or warning cat before I'd imagine, as I leave a light on around lofts each extremely at night, and old cat don't see so great anymore, slowed down lot and not nearly as fierce, but the pigeon raised partly by cat, grew up fearing nothing and seen it kill a black rat one night in yard). So their personalities situational I guess. As some are scared by butterflies. Lol
