- The Urban Monk is back at his GS550 cafe racer with more progress on the fiberglass seat pan. An admitted novice to fiberglass work, he makes a mistake with his release agent, but the lesson is useful. Like a long adventure ride, building a vintage motorcycle is an imperfect journey.
There are a lot of options for prefab cafe racer seats and seatpans, but often the best looking result comes from doing a custom seat that fits your bike perfectly and allows you to choose your sight lines.

I used tape over the foam and then regular car wax as a release agent on top of the tape. Good job, looks good!

It wasn't that you shouldn't put resin down first, you should. You need to finish your part with primer, paint, clear coat. Use proper release agent, a thin layer rubbed in, not plastering a blob of wax (lol). And then you have a proper surface for resin. The thing is, body filler is porous, it absorbs moisture, you need it to be solid and shiny. Your buck was unfinished.

You should have used epoxy resin rather than polyester
Is your concern that it won't hold up long term? If so I guess only time will tell. It is doing fine so far. Or were you thinking something else? Thanks for watching!
@@UrbanMonkTV two things. The epoxy would have had a longer pot life, reducing the rush and it is stronger for the application, polyester resin is better in applications where you are fibreglassing over a core material, for example, surfboards. I am liking the bike so far, I love cafe bikes.

About 3. Mat and cloth.

Urban Monk TV It still turned out great for a basic foundation. I have been hesitant to start my seat but I'm not making a mould. I cut my seatpan down by 8.5" and have it held in shape with popcicle sticks and hot glue until I glass it. More for structural reinforcement rather than shape.
