  • This was my second attempt at off center woodturning. Just as nerve wracking as the first time I made an off center goblet. Not everything went to plan, but I'm glad I could at least salvage the captive ring!

    I love the goblet form. Captured rings are so much fun too, I took my captured ring tool out to my Dad's place to show him how to turn them (he's been turning for years) and it was really cool being able to teach him something for a change :)

      It's not video mistake it work mistake - and it's happen more often than we see in videos. I think woodcraft failure videos would overwhelm successful ones. True professional never gives up. Huge respect.

    You can tape down the second ring so that it doesn't flail so much and possibly break again.

  • @KevinWeilacher
    @KevinWeilacher 3 роки тому +1

    I made something very similar to that in my high school woodshop class.
    A candy bowl with a floating ring around the center stem.
    After I had cut the ring loose I taped it to the bottom base to keep it from flapping all over the place. It allowed me to finish off the stem without the ring getting in the way or from it flapping around and breaking.
    I love the look of things like this because they often bring about a very good conversation piece.
    I do love the way you offset your piece to get that off center stem. That gives it a really cool look..

    Pretty awesome, and a clutch save to boot! It's crazy, out of all these woodturning guys on UA-cam, this is the first "mistake" I've come across. I'm sure there's more, and definitely more dangerous ones, but nobody wants to show those! Great job!

    good recovery Cook. if i may, after cutting the ring you can sand it by glueing the send paper to the goblet leg and let it sended and 2nd, use a tape to stick the ring to upper part of the goblet so it wont bother you finishing the rest of the goblet.

    my dad was a cabinet maker in the 60's thru early 80's. though a lathe wouldn't have been used in any work I saw him do he feared the table saw more than a lathe.
    to me its always looked terrifying. I always see marks and holes in the walls behind the lathes when you guys use them. I never assume its from debris. I always
    guessed it was the chisels going flying.

    7:03 The "SNAP!" sound made as the gouge decides to suddenly jump to the right into the wood makes me wonder if there wasn't something wrong with the wood at this point. Either that or you had it at the wrong angle and it dug in with disastrous consequences! You were turning it with an odd bent shape in it so that may have contributed to wobble which in turn may have caused the gouge to jump.
