I think I spotted a thrip on my Adansonii the other day, I squished it, quickly repotted and washed the plant, checking everyday now, it’s on its own the bathroom so fingers crossed I don’t see anymore! Brilliant, helpful video, thank you! X

Hallo, I always use my smartphone Oppo Find x2 pro with microscope linse 30 ore 60 to observe my plants especially the new ones.
With the smartphon you can also take fotos of the enemies--
Just today I baught two Alocasias after a long break,
and I buried the rest of my Birkin (very good for one season.)
Thank you for your very interesting tutorials!!!
    Sorry for my weak English.

Appreciate the long video! It's been a process to accept that dealing with pests comes as part of having plants :) making it part of my routine check ins has made it much more manageable

PROVANTO: if you are outside of the UK and you can´t get "Provanto" in your country, you may find it under the name SANIUM - in the Czech Rep., probably Slovakia and other countries the company Protect Garden/ Protect Garten calls it Sanium Al with non-systemic deltamethrin and then they have a newer product Sanium System, which is systemic with flupy...something in it. Both are wonderfully efficient - I tried many things on thrips, but this is the only thing that finally worked for me.
Both Saniums were fine on all my plants.
I had best results if I sprayed everything every fourth day for several weeks and then less often for few more weeks (just to be sure). And also I kept watering with it until everything except the plants and me is dead :-D
    Thrips & spidermites = my collection´s nightmare.
Thank you for the tips, they are very helpful. I might get a better spray as you suggest - every time I keep spraying for 3 hours, I feel like my arm is going to fall off, and then me too :-D

Wow that is amazing, thanks for sharing that information with everyone I am sure they will find it really useful. 🌿💚 Yeah I get it with the sprayer I was the same, truly the pump sprayer was a game changer. I also lucked out with the one in the video, I found it in a local plant nursery for very very very cheap 😊

Yes, I have used the 🦟 mosquitoes dunk and it controlled the gnats for a while but it must be used a few times over 2 weeks. I am concerned about using this product on my calatheas and allocatias because they can be very fussy so I diluted it by half and all survived!
I just noticed a few of those pests today while watering so it is a constant battle. 🙃
    I love ❤️ your sarcastic laugh. 😊

I just started using predatory mites this Spring. Within a couple weeks, the spider mite issue was basically over. My collection is large, and this method was so much easier than using chemical sprays.
I tried neem oil for a while, but I can't handle the smell. lol
Great video, once again! Your content is always informative and fun. 🙂

I found for fungus gnats I add a layer of aquarium rocks or small rocks on the top of the soil. So if there are any babies in the soil they can’t get out, so they suffocate and die. Any adults cannot get in so they end up dying as well because their lifespan is short.
I also preemptively add DE and mosquito bits to my soil whenever I repot.

Thank you so much for all the excellent advice, especially 'Don't Panic'. I've got thrips on several plants but I will not be defeated! I'm trying biological predators first, I really don't want to use systemics but I do feel better about using them now, if I have no other options. Great content, Thank you.

Thank you Memo, your video was so nice and definitely put my mind at ease, I have Thrips 😩 and I didn’t want to use chemicals, so I’ve been spraying Neem oil and eco ver washing up liquid for the past three weeks and 🤞Hopefully I will see you at the plant swap at the end of October?

I think the best pest fighting is done before you put new plants in with old ones. I wash and spray every new plant and quarantine it for months. I’ve even used plastic bags around the new plants if I don’t have enough space in quarantine areas and have to move them in with my other plants. If you do that, no direct sun

Thank you for another great video. Scale was the first pest I had (patio palms). Look for ants if you have scale or mealies, sometimes it’s easier to see the ant activity. Root mealies are the worst! I know you’ve said this before but do not ever reuse saucer water from one plant to the next, I spread them all over that way! I had to reroot many Hoya bc it was too late even with peroxide soil washes. If you see a Hoya failing for no reason, check the roots! In the US I use systemic imacolprid(?) and sevin foliar spray which is extremely effective but I worry I’m killing the “good” bugs/bacteria etc. I am a patio tropical plant grower so it would be hard to contain beneficials. I do see some signs of naturally occurring predatory insects but then I’m probably killing them too! am interested in soil biome if you would like to share your thoughts. I have also started using microrizhe(?) which is hard to tell if it’s working bc it’s growing season anyway. Thank you for all your tips and hard work!

Oh wow thanks for sharing your experiences for scale, as it really is a pests I have not come accross yet. Definately agree on not reusing water as if you do have root mealybugs then it's just asking for trouble. I know what you mean on soil biome, I have been using mycorrhizal fungi but same not sure if it is helping as it's growing season. I will add a soil video to my list of new videos 🙌🌿💚

Here in Canada we can get the dunks. Honestly I used them combined with other systemic measures for pests and have found the beneficial nematodes to be much more effective. They are also a pain to deal with. You need to crush the dunk in a porous material to contain them otherwise they clog up your watering can. If too much of the material ends up on the top of your soil it also has the potential to mold.
I myself am slowly beginning to try PON because the constant treatment of the soil ie... nematodes ect is adding up over the past bunch of years.
I'll still keep the plants that are thriving in soil but the ones that have ongoing issues because of gnats I'll transfer to PON..
Thank you so much for your informative videos on PON you've saved me money as well as heartache on how to go about transitioning from soil to PON..

I use diatomaceous earth (Kieselgur in german). Its so great. You wont have any problems with larva in the earth anymore. So that part of the livecircle is not posible any more.
I just take a spoon and mix it in the 1 cm of soil in every single pot and put it in my pottingmix, so every repot is already covered.
Since then, i only have to deal with the bugs that come from whereever... outsite or what.
But i have all plants in soil, so i dont know with the other media.

Thrips burrow into the plant tissue to lay their eggs. That’s why spray doesn’t always work and they seem to keep coming back forever when you think they’re gone. I prefer watering plants with systemic. It poisons the pests when they munch on the plant and is fat more effective and less dangerous for the environment that spraying

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 роки тому

Ohhh great tip, thanks for sharing, does the systemic drench cause any stress to the plant? Or have you found it generally does ok?

    • @aniliname
      @aniliname 2 роки тому

@@Houseplantygoodness The toxic agent in systemic is a neonicotinoid, which is basically a synthetic chemical that imitates the neurotoxicity of nicotine. I used to make tobacco tea to water my plants with to kill fungus gnats - it’s basically same thing, just stronger. The reason tobacco is so effective is that it comes from a plant source and is not toxic to plants, but is very toxic to animals. I have never seen any adverse reactions in my plants to systemic. The only thing I would warn about is using it with plants in semi-hydro. I’ve heard some brands in different countries don’t have this problem, but the one we have available here starts to sort of turn bad after a few days and creates a stinky sludge in the reservoir. So I water the plant outside of the reservoir, let it sit out like that for 2-3 days, then flush it well before returning it to the reservoir. I don’t love that option because it puts the stuff in our water supply, but it’s the best I’ve come up with thus far, and I prefer it to spraying toxins in the air. Then it takes about 10 days for the systemic to fully infiltrate all parts of the plant and become active and toxic to pests.

For Scale on my Rabbits Foot Fern, I use systemic granules. I use it in just about all my plants, hoyas, ferns, philodendron, begonias, pothos, Alocasia, succulents, cacti, Monsteras, Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma....
