      90s JRPGs were a musical feast. You could almost always count on them having good music. Even on the Gameboy they had good music.

    Fun Fact: The cartridge is mostly taken up by the music. They literally sacrificed the quality of the game for the music. And it still holds up today as music Final Fantasy 7 can be jealous of.
    Not the best RPG ever; but METAL AS HELL.

    One thing I remember about this game was how the boss sprites actually showed how much you've damaged bosses. It's been years, but I still remember how the Medusa looked more and more ragged as you kept whaling on her--her outfit got more tattered and her hair more frayed (and her facial expression was more pained as well). It stood out to me because none of the "real" Final Fantasy games at the time had boss sprites like that--only your party members had a winded/fatigued look at low HP.
    I actually can't recall the first mainline FF game where bosses had "low HP" animations/sprites. Anyone wanna help me out? lmao

    • @LordAtmo
      @LordAtmo Рік тому

      yeah she had 2 other "images". her initial appearance, then one where she's hissing with her fangs barred and her hair snakes looking messy. Then finally one where she's completely bald, putting her hand on her head, and looking frightened and weak.

      I think i have never saw one with that kind of decay detail. Some rpg of that era what they had is some bosses with different phases changing shape on the same battle.
      Romancing saga 2 had some bosses change shape but it was out of battle mostly, when you faced them a second time whey were more menacing.
      Phantasy Star 4 had a few bosses with different phases. Wont spoil you who in case you didnt played it.
      Im sure there are other games with phases too but i cant remember.
      But i think FFMQ is unique on that aspect, no other game did what this one did. What a missed opportunity man...

    • @seanobrien276
      @seanobrien276 Рік тому

      @@LtCommanderTato Yeah, it's one of those details that's stuck with me even though it's been years since I last played Mystic Quest (I totally forgot that Medusa actually loses all her hair and has a desperate/freaked-out expression when she's close to death haha). Boss transformations between battle phases has always been a staple, but it's strange that "boss decay" has hardly been touched. I do remember Shin Megami Tensei 3 having some "near-death" boss animations, but they mostly involved slumped-over boss stances, or the final boss having "uncontrollable quivering" when it's almost dead.
      Now that I think on it, Octopath Traveler 2 had some pretty amazing boss changes like this--and they were actually pretty relevant to the bosses themselves and their involvement in the overall story. Ochette and Castti's end-journey boss fights are good examples of this.

      @@PeterOwens1006 Spoiler alert!
      It's been a while but there is a tower that you have to go through to get to aquaria and in the tower they have you push a pillar around that you use to jump over and proceed. If you don't put the pillar in the middle between the ledges above you and you push it into a corner you can't push it any where else. AFAIK theres no way to pull it to get it out either. My advice; save before entering the tower and play around in there. It's a fun place to explore so long as you mind the pillars. xD

      No joke. I legit wrote to Nintendo magazine when I was in elementary school to get help solving the Falls Basin puzzle. They actually responded and told me where to move the pillars. They didn’t look like anything you could jump on to my simple elementary school mind. I’ll never forget how frustrating it was!

    • @harmian
      @harmian 10 місяців тому

      @@hood6854 Then it must have been that temple before you go into the ice pyramide. There you had to move the pillars with 1 space between so you can walk through vertically and jump over them horizontally. I was about 8 years old and fortunately I had the official guide back when games where delivered in these huge boxes. Now I'm feeling old. :(
      I can believe that it was quite frustrating for you.
      Even back than that game was kinda boring with the slow walking speed and slow pace at general. Everything took so long.
      Lufia 2 was an huge improvement in every way.
