My wife and I used to sit in the 3rd row in the pit grandstands at Chico. This literally happened in our lap. Then heat from this hit us so fast it was unbelievable. What you can't see in the video because it was on the side of the car you can't see from the camera view, Donny was on fire as he got out of the car and rolled to the ground, unfortunately he rolled straight into the burning fuel pouring out of his tank. In an instant it went from bad to as bad as it could get. Brent Kaeding was there with the fire bottle and another driver, I forget who, had his helmet on and he and Brent dragged Donny out of the fuel fire. I've been around this sport 65 years and have had several close calls with out of control sprinters and midgets but that fire remains the most afraid I've ever been at a race track. We were way to close to that. I'll never forget that blast of heat. We were all lucky that night but nobody as much as Donny Schatz.
Damn.
Donny will always be a legend of the world of outlaws sport

My dad worked fire crew in the middle and he saved Donny and Donny is my fav woo driver
That inferno didn't stop Shautz by any means it's Buck up or shut up from there on out
I’ve been watching for 9 or 8 years in my hometown in Perth Australia and when I was older I found out about this crash and was shocked I’ve never seen anything like it I’ve seen firey crashes at Perth Motorplex but not one like this for sure
It might have been the (rumor may have had Nitromethane in the fuel) Outlaws ran the stuff in the 80's, 90's, 2000's but don't ask. That is why we now have fuel checks.
I'm glad Donnie Shatz was ok and healed from that fiery crash and another driver ran to him to save his life.. in 2002 during a qualifying heat race i was in a teenage rookie driver that was leading the heat race was about 5 car lengths ahead of where. I got to 2nd place after I started in 13th . His car suddenly erupted on fire and in his state of severe panic he forgot to undo his safety harness while trying to get out of his burning race caf. . I bailed out of my car and ran as fast as I could to get him out. I got him out and rolled him on the ground to put out any fire on him. Luckily the was none and he was uninjured . I got burned slightly but my fire suit did its job protecting me as much as it could so I could save another drivers life.. it's always good to racers looking out for each other.

Do one on 1998 Dion Hindi's crash at red river valley that took his eye sight for a while and his rebuild to running the tour again in 2006 I was a crew guy in the 2006 season and you showed a clip of his flip at chico and he even crewed for Donny in 2005 for a few and he was a rookie the same year as Donny in 97.

No, he had the nickname years before. Mostly from running at Placerville. He truly was wreckers or checker when he first started racing.
What happened to Donny's Left eye? It looks fake or different from his right eye.
I think it was the shadow, the broadcast only mentioned the burns on his face and no other injuries
