Nice one, Miss Lin! Good reminder at 3:25 about why the phrase "听不懂 tīng bù dǒng" is not optimal if you want the listener to feel comfortable and eager to continue the conversation. Some of the alternatives you presented here are definitely better options for learners who want their conversations in Mandarin to be more fruitful and last longer😀 Keep up the good work! / Angel
Number 5 with the bonus is really helpful, thank you. I will try to use this more, even though, I rarely say 'I don't understand.' I try to work my way through it with what I know, and use body language. I've found that this helps me learn more, because I will eventually start picking up (and understanding) what the other person is saying the more I put myself in that situation.
謝謝 !Glad it helps! Can i make a little request ? do not hesitate to share my videos with other learners or give me a shoutout on social media 😊💕It means a world
Thank you for your dedication on helping us to speak mandarin Ms. Lin. It is so annoying as well that if they talk to me ang I don't get what they say they say "NI TING PU TONG MA"? I feel so stupid, with their facial expressions and laughter😢 it hurts.

Thanks for the great video! I'm studying Mandarin in Taiwan and I would say the issue I run into with the first couple is that if I don't catch what someone said on the first try, the speaker tends to see that I look western and assumes I don't speak any Mandarin at all, then immediately switches to English. My strategy so far has been to try to ask for repetition in Mandarin, and it sometimes will get people to repeat in Mandarin, but curious if you have any thoughts on this. Thanks!
I love this strategy! Insisting on speaking the target language, a constant battle but worthy it haha! I use it myself too when speaking Japanese and French. Glad to hear my content helps! Can't talk to fellow moms about our kids school because of the awkwardness. I envy the kids because even though they don't speak the same language, they still can understand what each meant. My daughter is so funny because she speaks made-up words in chinese and it's ok. 😅
Miss Lin, I thought Taiwanese would have patience for foreigners whose willing to learn and speak Mandarin or Taiwanese. However, I understand your point of view. Having to repeat yourself numerous time can be exhausting and frustrating. I will use your recommendation provided and go from there. Thank you 🙏 Respectfully Sammy

At work, sometimes I have to work with Mandarin speaking clients. If I don't understand, I say 不好意思。我聽不太清楚。麻煩您再說一遍。...or 不好意思。我需要找別人因為我聽不太懂。especially because my Mandarin is not that great to talk about tax/accounting related things. Or I joke around...maybe not the most professional, but I'll say 不好意思。我的中文很爛。Then they usually laugh and say 麼關係。我的英文也很爛。

Pour quelqu'un qui parle couramment français, l'exemple du "je ne comprends pas" est très aidant. Merci :)
