  • Smith and Wesson Equalizer is one of the more underrated pistols over the last year in my opinion! The Smith and Wesson Shield gets talked about a lot more, however I think the Equalizer is a better pistol!
Today, we tell you how the Smith and Wesson Equalizer has held up over the last year and 1400 rounds down range!

Replaced my CZ P07 with the Equalizer. Now my wife will go shooting with me. We added an EPS Carry red dot and an Olight mini-2. It sits bedside in a biometric safe. I take it to the range at least twice a month. Get this! My wife's birthday is coming up and she wants to go shooting, without any suggestions from me. Life is good!!

Just ordered an Equalizer. Getting my first handgun and wanted one gun that we could have for home defense and that my wife, who is not a gun person, could use if TSHTF. Also one that was optics ready and that I could also use as a range gun, etc. Basically wanted an all around handgun and the Equalizer fits the bill.

I own a Shield Plus Performance Center comp and the Equalizer. I hold both in high esteem. Every time I take the Equalizer to the range I marvel at the soft and manageable recoil. It is amazing. I purchased the Equalizer for appendix carry and appreciate the grip safety when holstering. The Equalizer is indeed one of the most underrated guns on the market today.

One thing I haven’t seen many people mention is that the equalizer is a shrouded hammer while the shield is striker fired. I’m a 1911 guy and just don’t care for striker fired guns and their triggers. The Equalizer is different and I really like it for my carry/truck. I’m happy with it.

I have an equalizer & have put a box of ammo through it. I carried a 1911 in the army and it too had a grip safety. Like you I'm not a fan. The easy slide is great for those of us that have arthritis. The trigger doesn't fit my trigger finger
very well and bites a little. Accuracy is good.

I have a lot of arthritis and have had hand surgery and have been shooting a 380 EZ which is gentle on my hands but I would prefer to have a 9mm if its not going to beat up my old hands, and 15 rounds is preferable to 8. The 380 EZ has been 100% reliable and also isn't fussy about ammo which is unusual for a 380. Hope the have one to rent at my local range so I can test it out before spending $500 on one. I've had several S&W's over the years and they have always been very well made and super reliable,

@@007twm I recently got a Ruger Security 380 on sale and it is very easy to operate, accurate and has 15 round capacity, though I am still thinking I should have waited to save up for the Equalizer and now am "stuck" having to also get the Equalizer since as nice as the Security 380 is it just doesn't seem to quite scratch that itch enough.

Good review…I agree on every point you made. Easy to shoot. 100% reliable. At 2000 round with no jams and no cleaning. Just bought a second one and this will be my everyday carry. My safety is never a problem. One could always leave it off but why? A safety is only a problem with lack of experience and training.

The Equilizer is a fabulous gun that is reliable and accurate. I am so happy with mine. It’s easy to rack and shoot. All milled for a Holosun red dot and light on the bottom. Be careful when you put it back together the guide rod must be in the perfect position or the slide will not go on.

I love to shoot my 1st Gen Shield but I bought the Equalizer a few days ago on a whim. I had an in-store credit and after holding it I bought it. After the first 15 rounds I was astonished because I didn't miss any targets, some I usually don't even engage. Pleasantly surprised with accuracy and muzzle rise. Sometimes you shoot a gun and you just know its the one.

At age 72 and arthritis in both thumbs I found I could no longer reliably operate and shoot the Ruger P85 I'd owned for many years.
I bought the EZ in 9mm and found it easy for me to use even with my arthritis. My dislikes of that pistol were the single stack mag and no optics cut. When the Equalizer came out I moved to that pistol and haven't looked back. Its reliable and accurate. I highly recommend the Pierce mag extensions for those who want some pinky support.

I own a few S&W pistols. The Shield 2.0 PC and Equalizer are among them. Usually I carry my Shield, but getting older and arthritis setting in I was looking for something easier to rack so I purchased the Equalizer. after shooting it for a while I can say I loved the accuracy, ergonomics and easy of racking. I was getting ready to make it my EDC when one day I went to fire it and pulled the trigger and nothing happened. After checking all the obvious like ammo and safeties not being engaged, I did a field strip. That's when I found out that the flat hammer spring had broken without any warning. I did send it off to S&W and they repaired it for no charge, but now I don't feel it is reliable enough to be my EDC, so I'm back to using the Shield. I will say that I put over 5,000 rounds through it but I just don't trust it. My Shield has way many more rounds through it than the Equalizer and it still works like a champ.

As far as SW is concerned, I own a shield plus 2.0, mp5.7 and a bodyguard revolver. Love them all, but the shield plus 2.0 is the carry gun in my eyes. What I noticed is that since I shoot revolver more frequently, my trigger pull improves. More center hits, less 5 o'clock shooting (leftie).

Fair review. Shame you don't clean it. As far as the 10 round mag, an extender is sold by Nimrods pierce grip for about $10-14. Doesn't add rounds, just fits your pinky finger. Amazon or other websites. It's perfect. I have about 1500 rounds thru. I've had an occasional stove pipe. I use magtech ammo mostly, decent ammo. I like the thin grip and the grip safety has never been a problem. The window in the slide top is a nice touch so you know there's a bullet chambered. An extra safety check is recommended and takes a second.
Thanks for that review. I'll be watching many of your other posts.

As someone in a 10-round-limit state, I really want to see the Equalizer with a 10-round magazine and one of those angled (wedge-shaped) pinky extensions. They make them for the Shield Plus mags, so it should work, but I haven't been able to find pics, videos or even forum posts that show it. I really dislike the hanging pinky, but the backstrap is long enough, so the angled ones are a good compromise.

My wife and i just got our first firearms last year. I went with a glock 19 which im pretty happy with i suppose. The plastic sights and trigger are kind of meh and the grip is a little thicker than id like for it to be, but its fires every time ive pulled the trigger and is comfortable enough with IWB appendix carry.
My wife got the equalizer with the thumb safety and loves it. Shes felt good shooting it and so have i. The grip is much better imo than the glock because i can actually get my fingers around it and the trigger is easier for me to reach as well. Plus it feels better since its a metal trigger.
The only complaint we have about the equalizer is the front slide serations. My wife bought a belly band holster for it and its unusable because the serations absolutely will not let go of the fabric for her to be able to draw it.
Considering this would probably be a gun women would go for with weaker grip strength the serations being that pronounced was a bad chocie imo. A lot of holsters for women have fabric to hold the gun and its just not possible to get a reliable draw with this gun.
That being said, were both new to the world if firearms so if anyone here has a solution to this problem or knows of any belly band/thigh type holsters for women that dont use fabric to grip the pistol, we would be very appreciative of the info!
Hope everyone has a great day and God bless!
