The biggest mistake new and old resellers make is not showing appreciation for the customer. Some act like they’re doing the buyer a favor by taking their money and shipping them something, especially on auction items that sell for less than expected. Always, always, always thank the buyer, pack their items carefully, leave thoughtful positive feedback, and thank them again.

Yesterday, I watched a whatnot. The person referenced you practice of including your kids in the business. It was not a necessary comment and I got so riled up I cannot remember the context. So…. Today I looked at your post with objective eyes. (Teacher/Counselor) I enjoy what your kids have to offer. What they do is age appropriate. They are excited and it shows. Having watched for a while. I’ve seen them grow in their confidence. Their skills have developed in a fun relaxed way. Their beauty radiates from within.
Please shut that idiot down. At some point, he needs to grow up and be thankful to see a functional family as just what it is. No need to throw his jealousy at your children.

I totally agree. I knew a man that had his young son do his tv and radio ads for his home improvement business some 30 years ago. You kinda looked forward to hearing Jared in his dad's commercials. Soon after EVERYONE was using their kids for the ads, he would always comment, " I started that" and smile so big..... and yes it did great things for Jared, he became an on air news reporter for a local station.

When I started selling on eBay, I watched a video on selling plush I went to Goodwill and bought 10+ for 2.99 come home listed them sold one in a few days for $20 I was hooked , then I went and bought probably 500 plush thinking I was going to make good money on plush. Boy was wrong. I’ve sold a few but I still have probably 300.🥴😫 I’m learning every day from watching your videos! Great advice!! Thanks

I don't cancel the order if i don't have it or can't find it. My way of handling it is to send them a dollar with a note apologizing and then send them a refund of all the money. You do have to buy the $3.50-4 postage and a $1 but this way the order shows delivered and who can be mad at getting a dollar and all their money back.

I definitely think shipping trips a lot of people up. Underestimating the costs, and then not understanding how to package breakable items. Definite learning curve there.

After becoming disabled to the point I could no longer work ( 30 years in construction), I went all out 6 months ago, thermal printer, 3 types of labels, Bluetooth scanner, lots of software, etc etc. Even a new laptop. Then got my resellers permit and tax exempt sales permit. Built relationships with several wholesale distributors. I sell on Amazon and Ebay exclusively. In exactly 6 months I have $3200 in sales on Amazon, and $5700 on Ebay. Net profit from both platforms in 6 months is $4,600. It isn't liveable, but I just started, and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Not for everyone, but if you think it is for you, give reselling a shot!

  • @wychaz
    @wychaz 10 місяців тому +7

I'm a 'new-timer' as far as reselling goes. I didn't make the first mistake you mentioned, though, regarding equipment & supplies; I just bought it as the need arose. I got a working postal scale for cheap at a thrift store, for example, and it has served me well and is still working. I don't have a lot of resources for picking in my area, though, and I made a lot of bad buys. I have refined what I pick up and use a lot more discretion than I did in the beginning. My best sale came recently; It was an antique 1877 book printed in Scotland that I purchased at the 'bins' for $2.29 and sold for $120.00.

You are spot on with every point. I got my start selling items from my own house that was no longer used. My approach was to reinvest every dime of profit into the business and grew slowly. I made a ton of mistakes with shipping. I learned very quickly to invest in a good scale. Doesn’t cost much. Used free USPS supplies and old boxes and packing materials from normal everyday purchases. I wa three years in before I purchased a thermal printer. The other items I reinvested in fairly quickly was some good lighting and a backdrop. Of course, like you said, needed a tape gun and tape too.

Since I started with clothing, poly bags were a necessity but cheap in quantity. With shipping I learned very quick to know how I am going to ship before I list and ensure accurate weights and measurements.

One time I put the wrong rifle optic in the wrong box and I listed the item based off of the info on the box, not realizing that the wrong item was inside until the customer got the package. So it was a similar optic but not exactly the right one and as a result I had to offer the customer a partial refund. A lesson I have never forgotten and I also check inside the box to confirm what I am actually listing.

Great advice, Kevin! I still consider myself new. I've been reselling for a little over a year and just now subscribed to get a store. When I first started, I was downsizing my art room so had tons of art supplies to list and they sold like crazy. Once that ran out I had to learn to source and I'm still learning. In the beginning I made several bad buys and I still do occasionally but not as often, thanks to you and others like you. I'm not comfortable using the app to comp while I'm at a yard sale so I've learned if I see something that I want to check I will pay for what I've already got and then go to my car and comp what I had seen. If it's good, then I'll go back and get it if it's still there. This has saved me several times from making a bad buy. I've learned a lot about sourcing through you and other UA-camrs and I really appreciate that you share your knowledge. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful family!!!

I sell a lot of media and if you don’t know what a bootleg looks like you can get screwed on a multi quantity listing that way. I got addicted to going to a flea market near Bristol VA because they had 20 booths full of movies that just came out for $3. If you are there that’s fine you kinda know what the deal is. However I have seen them dump leftovers at the goodwill. Many people don’t test media so when the customer gets it and the titles are in Russian and the quality is crappy it will get you.

When I can't find an item, I refund, and then send them something useful if not similar, as I don't always have a similar item. Recently I have been sending out clear glass toothpick holders and they are going over good. The secret is to send them using the eBay shipping tool from the item you could not find. That way, eBay does not take notice to give you a ding on your record. I was suspended once for going over the dreaded 2%. I had badly broken my wrist and had to shut down my eBay store for 2 1/2 months. That started a roller coaster ride that took me almost a year to recover from.

I did it for 18 years, mostly vintage jewelry. I did buy some internal shipping containers - plastic Easter eggs. Dirt cheap at tag sales, good for small items, and if you stuff them with paper and tape them firmly shut at the seam and toss in a padded mailer they're pretty hard to kill. (no flat sides for another box to land on, and no rattling items mean no broken items.) I bought the mailers with eBay's store discount, making them dirt cheap at the time. I sold jewelry because it was lightweight, and I both like it and have a permanent medical weight limit. Jewelry packages didn't hurt to lift and the pieces tell stories. Also, companies long out of business file no VERO claims. On the downside, multiple listings were few and far between.

When you start out, the allure of sourcing is so great that you want to do it as much as you can, but you have to remember that you have to list, store, and ship what you already have. Have a sense of the type of neighborhoods around you and they’re demographics (for example, those with older people will more likely have vintage and collectible things. Whereas those with younger people will have baby clothes they are trying to unload). Over time, you start to figure out what is likely worth your time for sourcing and what is not.

I appreciate the thought and effort that goes into this type of video. This information is gold that can only come from months and years of experience, both good and bad. My two cents: Go out there and get your feet wet. Analyze your mistakes and learn from them, think about how you can improve and implement those ideas. Take time to step back look at the big picture (ie: does this still make sense for me right now?) and always have fun! Don't allow the hobby you enjoy become a four letter word 😂.

Don't go into reselling thinking your going to made bank from the start. It takes time to build up a dependance on it to pay your bills. And even then be wary depending on it solely. My husband works full time outside of the home, so we have that. Because even though I have been full time for 5 years, part time since 2001, it can be a bit rocky sometimes.

However never end up in hospital and miss sending out items wow I got stung by eBay in May big style. I was seriously ill 2 weeks prior to been admitted for 3 weeks fighting for my life as my hospital note didn’t start until after the date they won’t accept it! So I’m now below standard !! Although they’ve stated that they will not close my account. Just gotta wait until next May for them to drop off unfortunately it was 13 magazines which count as individual items even they were ordered and paid for by the same buyer.

My opinion would not be to get a printer unless you are doing a lot of orders, I just screenshot QR code purchased from eBay and scan it at the register at USPS or UPS, I guess it would be different if you're having your packages picked up but personally I take my packages in while I am on the clock.

My advice would be to anticipate the learning curve, work with it, don't fight it. Every time we do something new there is a learning curve. For this business it could be shipping or sourcing or comping or packing or even storing. Anticipate that over time you will learn shortcuts if you keep striving to learn instead of getting comfortable. Seeking advice from others is great but you need to apply them to your situation.

My newbies Tip; if you have a dollar tree, they sell and inflate helium balloons - their balloons come in 10x8x1.5 box. They go thru a lot of em. Make friends and they will stack em for you! Be diligent go get them out of their way when they call! You can ship a lot of smalls in these. There will be labels on them just flip them inside out for clean professional box outside. A candle store might be another good source for small boxes; they will be heavier thicker wall crush rating.(great for protecting coffee mugs during shipping)
Think a little "out the box"😂, there are free supplies everywhere. You can easily acquire clean & free bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts, most anything needed to get started.Think of a local business & the goods they receive regularly and what they likely are throwing away. You might even be helping them during peak times by their dumpster not overflowing. Think of a schedule; good idea plan a box run and know when dollar general or $tree gets their truck for example. Plan around receiving schedule. Be courteous, if your stocked up for a while let them know you are good so you aren't inconveniencing them by not showing up for whatever they are holding for you.. Free boxes for smalls✅ other free supplies ✅get your free eBay shipping supplies with your paid subscription. ✅ Make friends- when I walk into retailers many times they recognize us and tell us of clearance, up coming clearance/deals. It is what you make it you get what you put in it back out. Don't be afraid ask how they are doing, get to know them. Make a mark where you are remembered in a positive way. Lastly for newbies be sure and leave the store, sale etc better than you found it. They will remember that too especially if you make a mess!. If I'm collecting boxes from a bin/dumpster I even pick up the area before I leave, even though I didn't make the mess. Finally I would always ask permission and remember to say thank you! These relationships you start making will grow and these people will be willing to always help you. You are more than likely gonna eventually come across another reseller too! That's not a bad thing either! Just Wait and see!
Thank you Commonwealth! Happy flipping everyone! make sum 💲#sidehustle #flipping

If we resellers are going to support each other, I have to protest your advice to newbies to price at the bottom of the market. Please teach them what race to the bottom means!

I can’t agree with this. I think it is important for the first few sales in order to first get the same and the feedback. If you watch the video I think I made this clear and think it is a temporary option at the beginning. If a new reseller prices at the market and above they simply won’t make initial sales.

I usually watch Dave to learn what mistakes not to make. Not nice but very true.

At least Dave's man enough to admit his mistakes and tell us so we don't do the same thing.

Dave is far more successful (financially) than Kevin. Don't get me wrong, I love both Dave and Kevin and have watched them from the beginning but you're kidding yourself if you think Dave is anything but a success. The man supports his family on social media income alone. His reselling business is simply additional cash and that's ALOT of additional cash. And he makes far more money now than he did when he was working a FT job. Dave is the true entrepreneur and a great family man as is Kevin.

I agree 110% on thinking things have value when in reality they don’t and that even surprises me every time too. For example, you would think a 1964 Sorry Board Game would have value, but low and behold they don’t and that shocked me when I checked Active and Sold/Completed listings. I spend so much time on my phone doing my homework while at Thrift Stores, Flee Markets, and yes even at Yard Sales, and why not? You need to know before laying money out for inventory.
