Thank you for this! I am in the process of having the tattoos removed from my hands (*forcefully, given by ,now, incarcerated ex-husband). I have been: FMF- (USMC standards) Field Medic, Mil Spec Ops Security, Corrections (Ultra Max/Death Row-High Profile), Disaster Recovery & Relief (International) Deployment Team, Social Services field work- sexually exploited/at risk youth and homeless Vets, Special training/certs/clearances through- Homeland Security/FEMA/LE/International RC. I am BEYOND committed! My background check, PA, CBAT-LE/CO, etc are NEVER a problem… but, then am passed by due to “visible, non-offensive, tattoos”. This has caused years of heartbreak. Indiana, Indiana state patrol will work with you and Indiana Metro police will let you as long as it is all expunged. Tennessee will allow you if it's expunged because in the state of TN an expungement allows a person to return to civil status prior to the arrest. There was a case in TN where an Officer was arrested for Domestic Battery (felony), and it was pre-trial diverted to a simple assault and they at first took his POST certification away saying he was DQ'd, and then he paved the way by getting a Federal court to go up against post and state TN law over rules POST certification because they conflict and expungement wouldn't exist if it wasn't a benefit to the people. So TN state patrol and other police departments will definitely hire you. Nolo PD in New Orleans right now is hurting bad, they will give you a chance.

So TN state patrol and other police departments will definitely hire you. Nolo PD in New Orleans right now is hurting bad, they will give you a chance. It's state specific honestly, some places are way harder but the first job is always the hardest to secure for everyone. Apply to around 20+ departments and 1 should pick you up. I'm no drugs, with 2 expunged misdemeanors, but 1 of them was a resist arrest, so in Texas I'm DQ'd for life, but it was a Pre-trial diversion and at the end everything was dismissed and the arrest record expunged. It's a grey area for me, but most states will give you a real chance especially in times like this. You just have to score high on the written, possibly be prior military (MP would help even if people thinks it doesn't, seeing someone be a cop for the military does give you points towards career officer vs just trying something new). I fall in the made one dumb decision category, but it was all pre-trial and expunged. IDENTGO is what most departments use for prints and mine come back with nothing, even the FBI prints I run have came back with no arrests. It's okay to have been in trouble and it wont bar you for life depending on the crime. Anything Assault or drug related can mess you up.

I finished the police academy in Dec. Typically your job history shows you have some what life experience based off of the different jobs, BUT what they will also look at is the frequency of how often you changed jobs and if you are currently still following that same pattern. None the less its good to list all your job history to show you have worked in multiple fields that could possibly cater to law enforcement.

It should be more like the military where you get an opportunity and if you can rise to the occasion you should be able to within reason become a cop with a criminal record I mean who would better now how to catch criminals than a criminal who is reformed.? How better to stop them from reoffending then to recruit themselves. It would give people something to work towards because having a criminal record I'm a military veteran I got in some trouble after I got out of the service and so many things are closed off to me and it's just very hopeless I wanted to be a police officer but because of that mistake that I have not repeated and won't repeat it's a disqualifier which really sucks because I really think I would be very good at that job

As long as you have learnt from your past it’s ok. If you have made the effort to shape yourself into a good person you should think about applying to become an officer. I am talking about people who haven’t done anything serious of course like DUI and DWI offences, a criminal record for instance. I don’t like tattoos on officers tats look cheap to me. I wouldn’t date a man with tattoos not even an initial tattooed on his neck or forearm. What we put on our bodies, what we wear and how we present ourselves not only at work but on days off speaks volumes about what kind of person we are. People that can’t control their emotions like anger or sarcastic comments says a lot about a person’s character. And if you want to be a police officer or even thinking about being one you have to cut off certain people and places you might go to. It’s crucial that you take a good look at who your acquaintances, friends and family are and what environment your living in. You can’t turn a blind eye to crime, so if Uncle Joe is stealing the office pens at the company he’s working for, it’s a crime. If your friends think it’s ok to get plastered on alcohol for fun on a Saturday night you have to let them go. These people won’t help your career they will hinder it. You really have to get serious with yourself if you want to serve and protect the community. You can’t go lecturing people about drinking and driving which is an offence when you have friends or family that are doing things like this and condoning that behaviour. So yes if you have family that think that laws don’t apply to them and they are doing something illegal then you not only have to report them but you have to disconnect completely from them. The same goes for colleagues at work if you are in law enforcement you cannot condone misconduct just because they are officers you need to report them. People think that it’s one big happy family working in law enforcement but it’s quite the contrary, you still have to protect your job and integrity as an officer and that means not getting too chummy with your colleagues. If you feel something is a little bit off with a fellow officer at your department then don’t get to friendly. Sometimes other cops can bring you down with them if they go off the rails so you still need to keep all associating on a professional level.
