I would highly recommend just being honest. I had bad credit because I was young and dumb in the military and when I got out of the military, I got into child support arrears due to taking awhile to find a job. I was honest about it and said that was years ago, I had paid off a lot of debts and haven’t missed a CS payment in years. Who I was at 20 isn’t who I am at 36. But I was honest about it and made it through🤷🏻‍♂️

If there is something specific that could be disqualifying but you want to be up front and explain it do you recommend getting coffee with the sergeant or setting up a private meeting with the chief to explain. I’m past the oral board, but have some issues regarding the background packet. But I don’t just want to check the box “yes” without having a face to face explanation

    • @armogantraining7164

Often your chance to articulate this properly is on your history statement, However if you mis-articulate it then you usually won't get the chance to explain.

I just got turned down 90% of the way through, and although they didn’t elaborate, it probably had to do with social media foolishness on accounts I had deleted and disclosed, but that was not enough. Which is ironic because I don’t have any SM now, but I would bet plenty of their officers do and post similar content.

    • @armogantraining7164

@@armogantraining7164 I fully disclosed the accounts and passed the voice stress test that asked if I withheld or falsified any information. The investigator asked about the content, and I told them candidly that I did it, I take responsibility for my actions, I’ve learned from it and don’t engage in that behavior any longer, but the command staff wasn’t having it. Could just be that department, but I don’t think I’ll be applying to any other agencies if this is going to be a reoccurring theme. My background investigation for this department was near the end of the process. I understand LE is under immense scrutiny, and I can see why they chose to not accept my application. I’m currently 19 years old and in my sophomore year of college. I have three speeding tickets I have accrued since I started driving at 16 one of which got my license suspended for a time because I failed to pay on time. I have participated in decriminalized, but still illicit drug use in college. I have since ceased doing any drug and my last ticket was a year ago. I have not been convicted nor charged with anything criminal- the only record that exists about me concerns my driving history. I’m taking the civil service exam in March and I have aspirations to join a police force right out of college but I’d Ike to know if realistically I need to wait a few years or if a career in law enforcement is out of the question for me.

My case was dismissed and record was sealed and my CCW was re-instated. I have no other criminal history. I am 27 years old. The arrest was in 2022.
It was a bad judgement call on my end for jumping into a relationship with someone I did not know. She was living with me after only knowing her for about 3 months. I have a completely clean record, besides a speeding ticket at 16 which the officer told me just to see his cousin (the circuit clerk) and he took care of it because I was kind. Though, in high school and freshman year of college I had some questionable social media use and shared some things that I shouldn’t have online. I have never been convicted of anything but some questionable things exist in my personal history. Nothing violent of course. I am only 20 years old, and I have made some young, dumb decisions. I have a good head on my shoulders now and my passion is to serve people and teach others the freedom of doing the right thing, because I know what its like to be living a life of wrongdoing. I am concerned of the questions I will be asked and how I should answer certain things but while being 100% honest. I also have been diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder but I am stable and take very well care of myself, I voluntarily went to the hospital to seek help because I was feeling hopeless in life but I have overcome that. My passion for upholding the law and the possibility of helping kids and adults whom i can relate to is really what I want to do in life. I feel that my personal history would help me within my work as an officer since it is part of my testimony, but I know some people wont think in that gray area, because the law is black and white. This is exactly why there’s officer shortages nationwide. This ridiculous belief that just because you got into trouble, you’re automatically considered a poor candidate. Well, looks like some of the guys who are on the road right now were pretty poor candidates but managed to get hired because they had clean backgrounds. Now this is personal for me because I was railroaded by MCOLES in Michigan. I was a troubled youth. I got into a ton of trouble back in the day. No felonies or major misdemeanors. Mostly civil offenses, traffic violations, and a couple misdemeanors. I’m in my 40’s right now and all of this happened when I was in my teens. None of this shows up on a record check now. I’ve since worked security in a casino, currently work security in nuclear, currently work as an ordinance enforcement officer and reserve police officer part time, attended law enforcement programs and academies, graduated from those programs at the top of my class. I owned up to my mistakes, learned my lessons, and moved on. Being honest and upfront does not work. All that matters is what is on that paper and most of time you will not get any opportunity to explain anything. Law enforcement will continue to be short on numbers until the end of time unless something changes that incentivizes people to seriously consider a career in law enforcement.

I appreciate you reaching out but there’s absolutely nothing you can do to help unless you are a master mind at winning appeals. My chief, academy directors, and I all tried in the appeal process, but yet here I am. Law enforcement will forever be stuck in the assumption that if a candidate has a clean background, they are a good candidate. It’s just how it is. I’m sure the San Diego officer who recently made the news was an excellent candidate… 🙄. There are a ton of people out there who got into trouble when they were younger who would make great cops. This notion that because of their past troubles, they will make bad choices or be easily tempted to go the corrupt route is complete, pardon my French, bullshit. Most of us grow up and become responsible adults, but our pasts are scrutinized anyway. Take for example my situation. One thing I was denied for happened when I was a six year old child. Somehow 39 years later, that still matters. This definitely plays a big part in the shortage of officers nationwide.

I need some advice about this:
I’ve signed my conditional offer with a local pd, passed the oral interviews, passed the pt test, received an academy start date, and am just waiting on my background check to be cleared. After, I’ll be doing a polygraph and then they told me I’m officially hired.
I was caught having sex last year late at night in my car with a girl who was also my age. We were both 22. The officer just wanted to make sure we were both of age, which he determined that we were, and told us to leave and get a room. We weren’t charged with anything. Prior to submitting my background investigation questionnaire online, I forgot that this incident happened. I remembered this incident a couple of weeks later but didn’t revise the background check. My reasoning was that, because we weren’t charged with anything, I didn’t think it would be a big deal to go back and revise. The detective conducting my check called me earlier today with some questions. He asked me,” what happened in August of last yea?”. I was surprised he even knew of anything happening. I told him I didn’t remember and then he asked, “did you get caught having sex”. I then told him the truth.
I’m just scared now that maybe i messed up. What do you think?
