I'd argue for a long time now that ceiling has been somewhat lowered though, due to clones no longer gaining much exp from kills, nor gaining much exp around allies, reducing need to keep the Meepos split to multiple areas as often. I suppose the addition of Dig and MegaMeepo helped return the skill level back a bit though.
@@MsHojat Meepo will always have a bad winrate though, because most people playing him won’t be good enough. For most heroes, their winrate is a good indicator of their balance. But for Meepo, it’s been shown that even when he has low win rates he is capable of being extremely impactful when in the right hands. If a characters bad, there’s a limit to how good you are with them will carry you in a game. What Meepo has shown for a while is that in capable hands he is entirely capable of being a very strong hero; he just requires a specialist in a game that discourages being a specialist at the highest levels. His winrate even in the pro scene is hard to know his strength from exactly, because when someone gets good with Meepo he terrorizes the scene so much Meepo gets banned almost every game anyways and won’t be banned in situations they think they can win, which skews with his true winrate numbers alot.

@@sevenpolar3483not really, and even if you are right, it's nowhere near true to the same extent as the above statement. When you play meepo, you play up to five heroes instead of one so it's up to five times as hard. In a game such as dota 2 which is very complex and hard to play as one hero, even "easy" heroes such as huskar or pa or lc, imagine if you could watch 5 different parts of the map at the same time and play each hero at the same time perfectly, it's just impossible even if u played dota for everyday for 80 years for 15 hours a day, no human can do that while you can master heroes such as sniper way easier and use their full potential. i wish notail as a carry with meepo could’ve been mentioned more. I know he didn’t use meepo at the Ti and these videos are Ti centric but still, a classic in my opinion.
That lore tangent made me laugh by the end. So much research went into this one thing which I know a lot of people don’t care about, but it really is important to be clear with how you refer to a character, and it’s fun to see how you dug into it way too much.
I was like: no way he wasted so much time on such a usless topic XD. I still call puck her altho her pronouns is IT. Like my man, they are video game characters who tf cares. Gonna give him respect for dedication, tho.
I loved the tangent. The pronouns a character use to describe themselves is important for their identity, if you care about lore and stuff, and it leads to such interesting diversions.
Just watching this as a LoL player. I played a little DOTA back in 2014-15, but I never experienced Meepo. This Hero seems totally insane. The sheer potential of being in control of this many copies of the same Hero at the same time is immense. The complexity and skill ceiling is far beyond my tiny little brain. Huge respect to all the Meepo mains out there
Great hero. There are some draw-backs though. He has a lot of counters, for example earth shaker, a hero that does extra damage with his ultimate the more enemies are around him, and has 2 big aoe stuns. He can't use spell shield on clones(black king bar) meaning retreat is sometimes impossible if the opposing team has any kind of lockdown. Any aoe slows and stuns are devastating for him.
I remember when I was a little kid, playing DotA in Warcraft 3 is my only game I can play with my friends, and I mained Meepo, Using TAB and UNIT CONTROL using 1 to 4 Button are fucking confusing at first but I manage to master it and I always dominate every single game. Garena, man, I feel so old when I remember those. I kinda miss it. Garena Era is the best era for me, NO MMR, NO BAN, JUST TRASHTALK AHAHAHAHAHAHA. If someone left the game, the game still go on, no one never give up. Sometimes you will feel fucking devastated if you see your fucking Fountain destroyed by enemies 😂😂 and Spawn kills you over and over again 😂😂😂. When the Dota2 comes out, everything has changed. DotA players quit and play other game such as LoL and HON.
Definitely has a high skill ceiling, but I think it's silly how complex folks pretend he is. Rather, there are not many people who have learned or are aware of some very simple methods for controlling more than one unit. The sort of skills that are present in RTS games, but not generally necessary in MOBAs.
Great Video Baumi, ur Stories of Dota Videos are trully getting better by the minute. Sing Sing was such a beast player, shame he didn`t have the right conditions to win a Major tournament, he deserved it.
My man, these videos are the definition of above and beyond. I now know more about Meepo's self-identity and lore than anyone working at Valve haha. Keep up the great work!
I've never played dotage, but enjoy watching it and have played other mobas, and the production quality on this channel always makes the videos worth a watch even if I've never heard about the character before.
Im a League player but this one was very interesting to watch. Seeing what one of the most difficult heroes in Dota looks like, although I could understand half of the things you were saying I really enjoyed watching the history of Meepo. Great video.
@@vukvla2046all of leagues hardest champs are usually ones where you have to micromanage certain things similar to meepo clones (azir soldiers, aphelios guns, gp barrels)
@kang1983 Crazy how League's hardest champs are both broken S tiers on average and are extremely easy to master at a "fundamental" level. No way GP is even a tenth as difficult as Meepo, especially when his skillcap is...placing barrel chains. Or Aphelios, who has to micromanage guns...but has the best autos in the game bar none. Sure you can learn cool tech like GP's "ghost barrels", but that still will never be as difficult to perform as the average of Dota's hardest.
I played meepo one time cuz I thot it was the banning stage(I do NOT play micro hero’s). Needless to say I went 0 20 and even tho I hate him I respect anyone who can play them even slightly competently
Adding on to the tangent I think that Meepo is one being but all of his clones had different experiences so they developed slightly different personalities over time. Now they do all level up at the same time so that could dispute this but I'm not exactly sure how the lore explains levels. It could be possible that they all share the same psychological Id, but have separate ego's and superego's which would give them a shared unconscious connection and would also explain how they can poof to each other but I don't think anyone at valve got that deep into the lore of how he's supposed to exist. As for the lost meepo it looks like he's alot older so maybe that's just one of his family members idk.
It's like a physical embodiment of a split personality disorder. Instead of one meepo personality at a time being in charge of the shared body they manifest as duplicates.
I think you're right. I think Meepos are like a bunch of copies of the same person with different experiences, but a psychic connection which means they share a lot of their knowledge and etc. I think the lost meepo somehow lost his connection to the greater meepo, which made him age rapidly and suffer from various health effects.
Alrighty gonna throw my weeb hat into the ring, I see Meepo and his clones a bit like Naruto and his shadow clones. All duplicates of the same person AT THE TIME OF CASTING but can be influenced by personal experiences. Say for example you took someone exercising and made a perfect clone in the middle of it. One of them keeps working out day after day while the other decides to stop and just laze about. One gets fit and the other gets fat. But they're both the same. I guess in a sense Meepo is literally a parallel universe gathering of different hims
I have been playing meepo for 2 years now, not very good tbh but playing meepo just feels amazing, lost a LOT of games before a decent one, now is one of my best heros, almost not losing with it now, totally worth it.
Opposite of mine i stop playing him for 2 years now since the nerf hes not viable in anyway in current meta. If they decided to ever buff him back im definitly picking him back up
Listen. If Christianity gets to say 'we only have one god, but that god is three people simultaneously that are not just the same person' and be taken seriously, then fuck it, Meepo can do it too. There is only one Meepo, but that Meepo is in five bodies, and those bodies are also, on their own, also Meepo.
As someone who has just played a lot of HotS and League, I always enjoy hearing about Dota. Meepo is like the Lost Vikings but even more skill intensive somehow, super neat!!
Man, I really love this hero. Playing him is so unique and so much fun. I really think the new, bigger map suits him really well and his recent patches have been really good as well. I feel like pros have maybe forgotten how crazy this hero can be.
Meepo's potential map-wide presence and all the micromanagement that can go into that really could make him a potential pick for like RTS players wanting to get into MOBAs, especially something like a Warcraft 3 pro that's used to micro-managing multiple heroes on the map and base building. But yeah, for the average player, there's not much reason to burden one's self with learning the hero. - Want clones? Play phantom lancer. Want the lock-down and scouting? Play Mirana. Want map presence? I dunno, play mid and buy a blink dagger or something.
One time I was in a pub with my mates, I was new to dota at the time and I played Huskar a lot cuz of the op magic res. Anyway my friends were playing dota for years by then and one of them said that he’s actually made good progress learning meepo, gotten better with keybinds and all that. I, unknowing wtf a meepo even was all I knew was Huskar, says that yeah man I’m getting pretty fucken good with Huskar too. The looks I got from them were amusing
Meepo's 35% magic resistance was also innate since 6.78 (he was the only one who had a different base magic res, whereas every other hero had 25%), wherein it was normalized to 25% in patch 7.07c. The magic res was later readded into Divided We Stand in 7.31.
There's a book line by Peter F Hamilton where some people decide to go "Multiple" they have one or more bodies grown and their consciousness implanted in them as a copy of their original consciousness all of which are bound together in a form of quantum hivemind. It's not delved into too deeply but it's interesting, given that every one of you is still you the concept of jealousy for yourself isn't an issue in the arrangement and different aspects of you assume different roles much like hands or arms do. Since it's a post scarcity society there's not an issue of overly favoring one of yourselves.
Man that background music at 3:00 remembers me so much about morgan freemans narrating in the shawshank redemption; "I remember it as if it was yesterday; when i saw meepo for the first time he immediately struck my eye. When he came out that bus i could tell: That man was actually four guys."

i'd like to confuse the debate even further : you are a part of your brain, your conciounsness is one part of it , the only thing that stop your brain from doing muliple concioucnes in paralel is that it uselss . you could have mulltiple conciousness and never ever be able to know it . further : your identity is more defined by other than by yourself , so how many of version of you existe there is no soul, there is no absolute definition of you , you could be multiple . source: i had a quite severe case of disociation

It’s like when you hit me with a honkai star rail ad an ancient rage demon takes control of me. It takes everything in me to not grip my monitor 10 and 2 and cleave it the fuck in half
i think the meepo clones have some type of individuality but not because they're seperate beings but because the soul pieces aren't identical. i'm kind of imagining like of those cartoon clone type episodes were some guy makes a clone of themself but it's imperfect and only captures one part of their personality, so you can have the clone who loves eating or smt and then you can have the evil clone that has all the worst aspects of that person. so imagine that however rather than creating a new person, the personality of a single complex individual is instead compartmentalized and seperated while still being the same single person. divided yet united. a better example would be to just imagine harry from disco elysium. all his skills and perspectives have seperated and can talk to each other but they're all still him.
Meepo is mentally exhausting now unlike before. He's great but every time I play a game or 2, I quit and rest, this mental stress is probably one of the reason why he's not seen in competitive recently since they have to play tons of matches in a day.
it is one of the reason. In TI9 True Sight Insight, w33 said he doesn't play a lot of Meepo competitively because of the mental toll it takes to play Meepo at such a high level.
@@AngrocSound well previously you can just buy aghs have 3 meepo and go to early skirmishes, you also level up faster than ur enemies so you can really stomp early in the game. Now meepo is on the same playing ground as the enemy and most heroes kits has aoe now, so you have to look out for tons of factors to micromanage add to it dota's macromanage nature. So you'll really be tired when having many things to micro and macro. I remember eons ago I can just look at meepo's lvl and the enemy's lvl and I can unga-bunga with blink coz I am way ahead with levels and items.
Meepo can be he or they because they were all one and semi autonomous so it's more like a centralized hivemind on the prime, sorta like drones linked up to a computer. But those drones used to be a bigger computer together. Imagine if you had 2 bodies but your physical 2 brains react differently as they would being in 2 different positions and factors leading up to it to where it's more like you reacting in a slightly different timeline but at the end of the day you are very much the same and can connect perfectly due to it, 2 bodies one shared concious. I always liked characters like this, it's like one brain on multiple bodies, a general feeling before you get entirely to the physical, i always called it a mutual hivemind. In this case literal soul splitting where when together they are always wanting and working for the same thing and usually has similar movements if coordinated enough so it's like my mutual hivemind thought but with more autonomy in the bodies themselves which would lead to the lost meepo sorta making sense and maybe unconnecting from the rest due to distance/time.
As someone who hasn't played dota in years this video made me quite nostalgic. I did miss a special shoutout to the first ever Meepo hero I once heard about. Mr BigDaddy aka N0Tail.
The meepo lore tangent sounds like something out of Elden Ring (Marika is Radagon). C9/Vici game was so awesome. Great draft and strategy against the push.
Man do developers do a shit work at making DOTA more accesible. Tried my hand at it, went thru an ok-ish, lackluster tutorial, then "new players are paired with high behaviour score players to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone". Never once, in almost a hundred games, was I paired with anyone who had less than 4 digits worth of hours played, which resulted in either our team getting stomped, or the other team getting stomped, neither of which is a fun or helpful situation to learn the game

We had a local meepo player in our neighborhood years ago, now he is married and I don't know if he still plays, but years ago, when he played meepo, the game was good as won.

I have a question for your consideration. Why does the existence of people like me, and heroes like Meepo, appear threatening to you?
Due to the sheer nature of Meepo, it's quite literally impossible for any human to play him at his max potential
the same could be said for any hero, human reaction times can never match the Dota 2 framerate.
To your point, even then, you will probably always make small mistakes with positioning or miss last hits or something like that but still it is humanly possible to master other heroes where it will never be possible to fully use meepo's potential unless he gets reworked.
@@MDZ20667I dabble in a little bit of meepo too, and the things you said, that is what keeps me up at night man...
😁😁@@saosombachang4480
@@MDZ20667 the only way I would see it possible is if you had hotkeys bound to each meepo so you can quick swap between each within milliseconds. From there, its just picture reference and what you can analyze at each given moment. Master chess players can play multiple games of chess at the same time and magnus carlsen did it blind folded lol
When you went off on the singular vs plural Meepo thing I could feel my brain slowly splitting into 5 Meepo
Dota players are so gay
Surprised you didnt mention Dragon Lance once, that was a complete breakthrough in meepo tech
Yea that was the meta where you can actually pick meepo with 3rd pick and still out power spike counters with how efficient the build with stats was
That was stupid and the reason we can't have good stat items is outlier shit like this
Also Rod of Atos. People called me stupid or a noob for using it for such a long time then suddenly top pros start using it, goes into the standard build, and it gets nerfed. And it's not like the item takes skill to use either. In fact if anything it seems best for worse players since they don't need to hit their net as often.
But even for Dragon Lance I found it hilarious that people would badmouth me for taking Dragon Lance even _YEARS AFTER_ the item came out. And this was at like Legend level, so it's not like these are even terrible players.
@@MsHojat you are a legend!

Lvl 25 talent should add another meepo, and the aghanims shard gives also another meepo
Yes, more hot keys! More more more!!!
That would probably scale way too fast tpo suddenly and itd bend over thr enemy team way too fasr
1400 gold for another clone yikes how about no thanks
well thats how the old ags used to be lol
And the Aghs upgrade gives… another Meepo
It would be cool if you gave a little 1 minute backstory of the hero as they were in warcraft 3/dota 1. Great video as always :)
same. I dont play dota anymore and i barely played dota 2 i only follow these videos more for hero lore and development
Oh my god I didnt realize it was Baumi until like halfway through. Dude I used to watch you ALL THE TIME when i was like 13... I'm 22 now. Pimp my Peon, that clash free for all custom game I think you made, I remember when you first got into angel arenas like allstars and blackstar and decided to make your own and it legitimately became my all time favorite custom game and I actually enjoyed it more than normal Dota, it was a fascinating take on competitive Team Deathmatch Moba game that still incorporates the farming aspect at the core of the Moba genre. God i love OAA. O MY GOD and when you first met your wife, when she first started appearing in videos and custom games. The crew that i VERY SADLY can't quite remember their names, but i used to love them as a kid. DOTA IMBA. That boat game on the old client.Working on that one space game as a game designer, going back to UNI. Its crazy because I'm doing all those things now, not game designing im trying to become a scientist but still. You were such a pivotal part of my childhood and my love for Dota as a whole. I used to dream that someday id be able to donate a million dollars to repay back all the good times i had watching your videos and interacting with the MNI community. haha not there yet... but maybe some day. Anyways, good vibes man, glad to see your still going strong.
Sincerely - A pretty big Fan
Same dude, the baumi jumpscare is too funny
i wish notail as a carry with meepo could’ve been mentioned more. I know he didn’t use meepo at the Ti and these videos are Ti centric but still, a classic in my opinion.
Holy shit NoTail meepo is the shit. But didn't during that time Meepo is sort of like a signature hero for w33?
@@gungrave10 Yeah kind of, for the player w33 meepo was signature but when notail brought it out- man, it was something else
That lore tangent made me laugh by the end. So much research went into this one thing which I know a lot of people don’t care about, but it really is important to be clear with how you refer to a character, and it’s fun to see how you dug into it way too much.
Baumi bought shard and didn't want to waste it
I was like: no way he wasted so much time on such a usless topic XD.
I still call puck her altho her pronouns is IT. Like my man, they are video game characters who tf cares.
Gonna give him respect for dedication, tho.
yeah it was so annoying and redundant
I loved the tangent. The pronouns a character use to describe themselves is important for their identity, if you care about lore and stuff, and it leads to such interesting diversions.
@pitofomen they didn't choose this pronoun, tho. Cause they aren't real. Valve gave it to them.
DotA players quit and play other game such as LoL and HON.
the worse thing about him is that he is not a bad hero even without the 1k hrs
Definitely has a high skill ceiling, but I think it's silly how complex folks pretend he is.
Rather, there are not many people who have learned or are aware of some very simple methods for controlling more than one unit.
The sort of skills that are present in RTS games, but not generally necessary in MOBAs.
Its the infinite layers of bag of tricks. Then after the tricks. Meepo mops you with practically infinite bind
THANK YOU SO MUCH . I FINISH 1HR OF THIS VIDEO WITHOUT EVEN GETTING BORED. MEEPO IS MY FAVORITE HERO. I REACHED IMMORTAL BECAUSE OF HIM.
@@namagem0main meepo is voldemort, clones are horcruxes
I've never played dotage, but enjoy watching it and have played other mobas, and the production quality on this channel always makes the videos worth a watch even if I've never heard about the character before.
Im a League player but this one was very interesting to watch. Seeing what one of the most difficult heroes in Dota looks like, although I could understand half of the things you were saying I really enjoyed watching the history of Meepo. Great video.
LoL hardest champs: fiora, ezreal, yasuo, katarina...
Dota 2 hardest champ: you play as 5 players gl bro xd

Noospheric Meepomind
Alrighty gonna throw my weeb hat into the ring, I see Meepo and his clones a bit like Naruto and his shadow clones. All duplicates of the same person AT THE TIME OF CASTING but can be influenced by personal experiences. Say for example you took someone exercising and made a perfect clone in the middle of it. One of them keeps working out day after day while the other decides to stop and just laze about. One gets fit and the other gets fat. But they're both the same. I guess in a sense Meepo is literally a parallel universe gathering of different hims
it's like twins, triplets, or quadruplets who grew up separately.
I have been playing meepo for 2 years now, not very good tbh but playing meepo just feels amazing, lost a LOT of games before a decent one, now is one of my best heros, almost not losing with it now, totally worth it.
nice nice, what is your mmr may i ask? Just curious xD
I had the same experience. Playing well on meepo just makes you dumpster the entire enemy team. feels so good
@@BreadAccountantmeepo the perfect hero to play the game yourself😂
Opposite of mine i stop playing him for 2 years now since the nerf hes not viable in anyway in current meta. If they decided to ever buff him back im definitly picking him back up
Listen. If Christianity gets to say 'we only have one god, but that god is three people simultaneously that are not just the same person' and be taken seriously, then fuck it, Meepo can do it too.
There is only one Meepo, but that Meepo is in five bodies, and those bodies are also, on their own, also Meepo.
Amazed by the love and passion you show for the content you create man. Thank you for this awesome video!
As someone who has just played a lot of HotS and League, I always enjoy hearing about Dota. Meepo is like the Lost Vikings but even more skill intensive somehow, super neat!!
Yay hots!!
As always a fantastic indepth anlysis, videos will be slow but I know I will watch every single one!

Ive been waiting for this exact one
Man, I really love this hero. Playing him is so unique and so much fun. I really think the new, bigger map suits him really well and his recent patches have been really good as well. I feel like pros have maybe forgotten how crazy this hero can be.
Nice video again. I am waiting for a video from Rubick.

@@thendar823 you are right
Been watching a few and I knew immediately this was Baumi, good stuff dude!
Meepo is my favorite character in dota 2. Theres nothing like 5 cave gremlins beating the life out of some poor guy with little shovels
Great Video! FYI @ 8:23 you might want to blackout that guys name haha
meepos don't have to all die when one of them dies during a match, they just do so out of respect, that's why the lost one is still around
I haven't mained meepo in years ever since my old mmo mouse broke but back in the day he was fun af, I even managed a +60% wr with him
One time I was in a pub with my mates, I was new to dota at the time and I played Huskar a lot cuz of the op magic res.
Astounding work, great analysis. I'm really looking forward to watching an episode about Invoker.
Dota 2 lore with a relaxing voice? this was a great find
I havent played dota for years but this video was great! i love it when someone has passion for something and can make a great video like this with an underused hero and talk about it for 1 hour

the coolest part of this video is when you mentioned liking the video, the like bar flashed with cool colours, didn't know that was a thing
Great video. I think N0tail also deserves a mention as a meepo expert. He was a support player mostly and sadly got to showcase his Meepo at tournaments really rarely.
I've been playing LoL since season 2, only tried to play DotA for like a day and a half before I gave up, and I just discovered and binge watched every single video you have. I'm telling you now, I will watch every one of these you make, I know next to nothing about DotA but I was able to perfectly follow along with everything you said (not so much what you showed, teamfights are still confusing for me to keep track of but that's my fault).
I hope Dragon Knight gets one of these, he was the one I was gonna try to main if I'd kept playing.

Reminds me of Murky the Murloc from HotS.
I think meepo its a hive mind but he doesnt know, so he thinks the other meppos are "other meppos".
i'd like to confuse the debate even further :
you are a part of your brain, your conciounsness is one part of it , the only thing that stop your brain from doing muliple concioucnes in paralel is that it uselss .
you could have mulltiple conciousness and never ever be able to know it .
further : your identity is more defined by other than by yourself , so how many of version of you existe
there is no soul, there is no absolute definition of you , you could be multiple .
source: i had a quite severe case of disociation
Man this takes me back. I was ranked 3 Meepo for a time just out of beta. I would wake up practice from 5 - 7 then go to school then practice 2-2...
I dont play Dota, but the Qualitaty from this Video is impressiv.
based on how there are different versions of aghanims, there might be (definitely are) multiple universes, which means there is one where universe where meepo didn't shatter his soul, went on journeys by himself as a vagabond, drifting from place to place, "lost".
there's your lost meepo explanation
It’s like when you hit me with a honkai star rail ad an ancient rage demon takes control of me. It takes everything in me to not grip my monitor 10 and 2 and cleave it the fuck in half
"Can I Meepo? I have perfect micro skills."
Just for you to know, Baumi, I always forget to THUMBS UP, then do it when u remind me... so keep it going! Good Job!
i think the meepo clones have some type of individuality but not because they're seperate beings but because the soul pieces aren't identical. i'm kind of imagining like of those cartoon clone type episodes were some guy makes a clone of themself but it's imperfect and only captures one part of their personality, so you can have the clone who loves eating or smt and then you can have the evil clone that has all the worst aspects of that person. so imagine that however rather than creating a new person, the personality of a single complex individual is instead compartmentalized and seperated while still being the same single person. divided yet united.
a better example would be to just imagine harry from disco elysium. all his skills and perspectives have seperated and can talk to each other but they're all still him.
Why more exhausting now?
Perfect story and tangent even and all in just an hour, keep it up.
Meepo the literal “get him bois!” Champ
Never played dota 2 but this is actually really cool character design ultimate skill ceiling

Way back in the WC3 days Meepo was one of my mains because he's such a dickhead to push out of lane if you can micro the clones.
I used to main meepo back in WC3 Dota days. I played a lot of RTS back then. I'd farm jungle, and lane at the same time. I could stunlock a player by juggling the nets with each individual meepo. Kiting like a boss. Oh to have my brain and reflexes that sharp again.
As someone who doesn't play dota, that thumbnail + title combo is hilarious
I love these videos! Thank you for your effort!
The biggest problem of Meepo is dota 2's integral delay on commands. It was so much easier controlling Meepo in dota allstars
Do you mind elaborating?
Lol, here I am listening to a random Dota story as a background, thinking the voice is vaguely familiar when suddenly... Hey, is that Baumi? :D I used to watch you for so many hours way back in the day :D That's a surprise.
There is a tabletop RPG called "Ultraviolet Grasslands" which has entities known as Porcelain Princes, and Meepo could very well be one of those :)
That whole Meepo pronoun tangent felt really unhinged. And when you went on to explain alien hand syndrome, I couldn't help laughing at how long it was getting. Hours of research and writing well spent 😂
We had a local meepo player in our neighborhood years ago, now he is married and I don't know if he still plays, but years ago, when he played meepo, the game was good as won.
