$135 in 1983 would be equivalent to be between $905 to $1,309 today, assuming an avg RBA compound cash rate of 5-6% over the past 40 years. It's the GOLD holds its value! Thanks for another fantastic video.
Awesome video Matt , I’d have to say I’d choose the sovereign as a prize because I have some in my gold stack and enjoy having them as a piece of our numismatic history.
@ThompsonsCoins I can't seem to find it on the website so I'm guessing it's already gone out the door, or found its way into your bottom drawer (no I didn't intend for that to rhyme)?
I remember the introduction of handy cards etc. - basically ATM cards. I think this is when we had widespread introduction of ATMs too. And me personally, I’d take the sovereign any day
Thanks for the info Matt! It must have been a very exciting time to be pulling cash out of a machine in the wall for the first time back then! I think I agree, you can never go wrong with a sovereign!

Missed opportunity for Westpac to give out silver ingots (like the first one) stamped like a handycard :D Both amazing pieces - did the letter stay with the sovereign? If I had that, I would certainly like to have the letter with it. I think we'd all like to have the gold for the value - but I do like the silver bar. Fascinating video as always! I'm going to mention this in my next newsletter :)

Hi mat now just inquiring question if you're gold bar or silver ingot has a stamp you pay a tax. But if you're ingot has no stamp you pay no tax. So just for question why is a gold or silver ingot marketing at the same price stamped or not stamped. Thanks
Precious metals don’t increase in value by much. What’s really happening is the purchasing power of Fiat currencies declines. Typically known as inflation..

Nice Matt - and now it makes sense - that's why the SSB of Victoria went broke. Handing out real money! Yes the Handicard came near the time when The Bank of New South Wales merged with the Commercial Bank and renamed themselves as Westpac in 1982. Their very first clunky old ATM machines they branded as Handibanks and you accessed them with a Handicard. They started installing in a few branches in 1981 and then did a couple of years of big promos - including that one, contrasting the old with the new.
Great video, some great vintage silver bars 🙆♂️ and , of course the beautiful sovereign 😍.
