What a great video, thank you!!! I first saw you on Dan the Collecting Man's channel. Pretty cool, you have your own channel too! I live in the U.S. I would love to see a video covering the most popular collector coins in Australia. In the U.S., here are some of the more popular categories: Silver dollars - Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Morgans, Peace, Gold - Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, Liberty Head Double-Eagle/Eagle, Indian Head Eagle / 1/2 Eagle, 90% - Mercury dime, Washington Quarter, Franklin half dollar. And last but not least, the Lincoln cent. What are your thoughts on Australia's counterparts? Or, what do you think are the most popular Australian collector coins? Thanks again! I limit my modern buying to ~3 specific items per year.. This keeps if fun, and not into a death spiral of having to get everything.... I learned to do this back in teh 2000's when teh RAM was putting out a mint set, a anda show mint set, and World show mint set..or the year the put out the 3 anda sets per city with just a sticker on the front... (2007/08ish). Focus - fixed - made a list interesting/cool looking and slightly - very rare silver coins. No need for date runs, or multiples. fomo - 20ish years paid very high retail for a 174x 8 reals MM. From a reputable dealer, just one that charges a bit to much. for what it was. It was just a lack of experience/time in watching market prices. (not the price guide prices). Only ever bought from decent dealers, did have to tell a friend that his 1900 US 1$ was fake. (it was really bad looking, was like a silver eagle not a morgan). he had an 1804 too. Didn't need to look at that, I pretty sure we know were all 15ish of those are located.
Great video Matt! I'm definitely guilty of some of them myself. I have a beautiful (replica) "Cartwheel penny" I thought I got a great deal on, which luckily only cost me $20, but I THOUGHT I was buying a genuine one (you CAN get a genuine one for $20, but not in that condition. I think the mint could do a lot to encourage collecting without FOMO. For instance, the war animals $2 actually isn't the worst release they've done - for those who really want the "exclusive" one, you can get the silver one. For most of the rest of us, there were *nearly enough* of the carded coins, and for those who just want a coin and aren't fussed about the card, there are the rolls, which many have broken up and sold individually (but be careful not to overpay). I think it's easy to get caught up with the new shiny things from the mint, and that's where dealers like you are fantastic, because you DO highlight a range of things, not just the fancy high priced shiny new stuff, so keep doing what you are doing, and showing off some of the interesting older stuff that comes in as well :)
@@QuentinChristensen thanks for the kind words Quentin! @@wisey95 absolutely!!! Some of the $1 I get through for the sale table would break the internet if they were released tomorrow through the RAM! Thanks for watching Wisey! ☺️
I think the biggest mistake is still being a collector in 2024 as pre queens death a collector could collect almost anything they wanted. I personally have collected for 36 years & my late dad collected even longer than that. since 2022 I have barely been able to add to my collection as I work so can’t spend hours on the phone or online on release days & because of family who served in all wars & a brother currently serving in the military that’s a theme I focused on but cannot get any of the good military releases anymore. I got a couple of war animals this year but taken over 2 years of missing out just to get a small scrap this year only because mintage was 100k so I think your advice about collecting a certain theme doesn’t ring true because focusing on a certain theme means to add to your collection a collector would have to be paying 10x the issue price every time they miss out on a release they need to keep that collection up to date because you want a complete collection not just a collection full of empty spots.
@@mark10270 I see your point Mark, but there are plenty of war themed coins out there, perhaps take a look at some of the older releases that are available at reasonable prices. Also, avoiding the initial burst of FOMO on any new release is generally a good idea in my experience too. Thanks for watching! ☺️
I pretty much have every military themed coin, RAM & Perth mint plus some Downies/Macquarie mint coins & medallions that I wanted/liked from the past 30 or so years up to 2022 when missed out on the red poppy, Vietnam silver proof in 2023 & now war animals in 2024 where I don’t want to feed the scalpers by paying exorbitant prices to fill their pockets.
