    I struggled with the question of what vehicle I wanted to camp in and possibly have to live in. I ultimately decided a minivan was the best option for me so I would never have trouble finding a place to park at night, better gas mileage, city driver, etc. So not too big, not too small...just right.

    Tent looks good but it's the van for me every day of the week. Getting up in the night for a wee could be dodgy with the rain coming down and that ladder. Thanks Shaun and nice to see you and Liam making a video together again.

    I would prefer the van but when you take into account insurance, road tax and everyday driving the roof tent makes more sense. Not as secure as the van or can be used in as many locations I presume but its down to running cost and how many times you get out and about. I can see an argument for both.

      I think the roof tent only seems like a good idea but there are far more advantages to the van setup.
      If you buy a nice small midsized van especially if it has removable belted seats in the rear then you wouldn't need to own a car aswell.
      You can't be stealthy and pop up the tent in a quiet street or carpark when you are winging it on a trip.

    Van is all well and good... if you already have one! Since the Covid construction bottleneck combined with the huge growth in home deliveries driving demand for vans, you absolutely cannot get a runner for the price of that tent box... which suddenly makes the tent box the only option for the majority who can't pay the ridiculously inflated van prices.

    • @LoveSundays
      @LoveSundays  Рік тому

      If you look at it this way that tent box is nearly £1000 but the car it’s sat on is £6,000 so we’ll the car get a van then convert the van for £700 simples

    I've had both before I have neither now here's my not so popular opinion haha.
    Tentbox or any other brand is great if you want a camper but can't afford the van, insurance, tax of another vehicle. I insured my camper for the year you could insure it as you use it I suppose. Tentbox will go on almost any vehicle it does work out cheaper especially around MOT time with an old van.
    Both are as easy to pitch as the other tentbox took me 2 kins and the camper took 2 mins to plug electric in etc.
    Now I do a lot of wild camping and I can safely say a small tent from a so called Premier brand would set you back as much as a tentbox. So all things considered they are good value.
    Lastly its a personal opinion, I'm 32 so I am fine getting in and out of a tentbox, older folk will find it hard.
    One last point stealth van camping is easier than tentbox camping in a layby.
    In the end both went as my transit camper was too much. And the tentbox went because I would use it rarely.

    I always thought that a roof tent would be a good idea but only for over landing
    There’s no point having something that size on your roof and having to lump it on and off and then there’s somewhere to store it
    You can buy a really awesome tent for a grand if your camping on campsites and wild camping with a roof tent just isn’t a good look or a good idea so the only thing I see them any good for is over landing
    If you search a UA-cam channel called atik ailesi you’d probably realise that a tent is better for over landing too making the roof tent absolutely pointless

    The roof box sounds like s lot of money for something that isn't durable. I'd rather sleep in the estate car, or if there's no space left in there, build my own deck on a car roof rack, pitch a cheap tent on it, for £200? In fact, I have a Chrysler Grand Voyager, and built a sliding bed for £200, which included some decent custom cushions(blue high density foam, and professionally made covers). The bed paint and cushion material is colour matched to the van interior, so it looks 'factory'. It's removable, so the vehicle remains versatile, being both a 7 seater and having space for a sheet of plywood on the floor. Also, I'm not sure being 5ft off the ground in a cloth bag, is going to prevent you getting eaten by a lion!

    Ok, the "conversion" cost £700, I assume that means you did it yourself. Add the price of the van on top at today's prices, that's gonna be over min 2k+ unless you get a right jalopy. So £2.7k and you got to build it yourself. Most people already have a car. So tent is way cheaper, and easier. If you want to buy a ready made camper van your not realistically gonna find one under £5k....

  • @markburrell

    Even though the van conversion cost about the same is the roof tent you still need to buy the van in the first place. They are quite expensive so the comparison is not really a true one.

    • @LoveSundays
      @LoveSundays  5 місяців тому

      But to have a roof top tent you also need to buy a car! This can cost me £3000 whereas the car cost my friend £10,000 so I’d say it’s pretty fair

    A van like that would be 160,- a month if lucky only in road taxes allone tho, thats what is stopping me for getting a van, i just cant afford the road taxes :/ so the car option would be cheaper in the long run here.
    Still, i would go for a van, got 2 tents to sleep in, dont need one on my roof xD
