Brilliant piloting, and one of the best sequences this show had. That's how an escort fights a larger ship--underrun their targeting sensors, keep firing, and DOOOOOOODGE! Much easier said than done, though. The Valiant's crew learned that pretty quickly.
Klingon ship design is very rugged to make up for the increasing technical gap to other powers as Klingons apparently don't make have good R&D. The Negh'var probably has 3 times as much warp drive as it needs to get somewhere.
Because every Starfleet ship except the Defiant leaves their warp nacelles completely exposed. It's like getting into a street fight with ones balls hanging out. Oh sure your legs might help protect them maybe some fancy moves even but when they get hit.....

It's ironic the Klingons developed the Negh'var class ''dreadnought'' to counter the Romulans own behemoth ''dreadnought'' style ship, the D'deridex. Before the Dominion war officially began and the Romulans tried to strike the Dominion preemptively with a cloaked fleet of D'deridex ships they learned very quickly that small, manueverable, fast ships could overwhelm larger ''dreadnaught'' style ships such as the D'deridex , much like how the Defiant was able to cripple even the Negh'var. Granted the Defiant is an extremely versatile and heavy hitting ship for it's size. The Klingons should've focused on upgrading their birds of prey or better yet building a new small, manueverable, fast and heavy hitting ship similar to the Defiant but with the tried and tested base design of the bird of prey. IDK that's just my opinion. I understand people like the idea of a massive, heavily armed ship that's designed to strike fear into other battleships, i personally think it's impractical and unnecessarily expensive. The best way to put such a bulky and unflexible ship to use effectively is to have it supported by a small fleet/half dozen birds of prey engaging smaller vessels and giving the dreadnought enough breathing room to manuever into position so it can best use it's enormous firepower as intended.
but we don't need to worry when it's o'brien at the helm, doesn't even know Delta formation patterns or full capability of the ship. Why is O'Brien acting like such a cadet N00B? Sisko be like "just GTFO the helm, i know the ship better than u, nothing personal."
Yeah, the Negh'var Battleship class is my favourite type of Klingon warship, it's big, powerful and can take a lot of punishment which suits my combat style. If I were a Klingon General, I'd want my flagship to be a Negh'var class warship to impress my allies and scare the hell out of my enemies.
ryan macdonald Yes indeed! My favorite though is Kirk's Enterprise, especially the film versions. Those Constitution class ships, in my opinion, are the most elegant ships in science fiction.

I know its alternate universe, but this scene really opened up Defiant's capabilities. Blasts her way through a Klingon Bird of Prey, flies through the explosion and then goes hunting for the next one, putting phaser fire up its ass. The speed, the aggression!!! The Defiant in the right hands with a competant crew was a real predator, the perfect example of a 24th Century pocket-battleship!

Wow, the ship scaling for this episode was all over the place. I know the mirror universe Negh'var was supposed to be over twice the size as it's counterpart, but that Peregrine fighter was almost the size of the Defiant. Makes me wonder if the Mirror Defiant is actually built smaller given how fast they built it.
Not to mention scaling for visual impressions is more important than realism. If it's a two seater- fighter, you will never see that ship per scale against an 1800 m long ship. That's why scaling is off in EVERY battle scene in DS9, it's designed to have an impact.

Kirk felt the same way about his Enterprise. Just look at his expression in TMP when Scotty takes him out to her in the travel pod (the big reveal sequence with the fanfare).
I'm surprised that after building the Defiant the Terran resistance didn't try building more ships to not only fight the Klingons and Cardassians and the Bajorans they would have been able to free Earth.
In the DS9 Mirror Universe comics, it was revealed that the Terran Empire was still around, but have lost almost all of their territory except the Terran Sol. System. They’re surrounded by the Alliance.
"We can't hit the defiant, do we increase implulse? Jusp quick into warp and come back with a better range?" "Nonesense! We remain stationary throughout the engagement!"
Klingon ships are built tough. Even with all that damage it was still able to go to warp. Had that been a Federation ship, warp engines would've been offline.
I doubt it. The Scimitar was the perfect warship combining speed with heavy firepower and defenses. It was made even worse with its perfect cloak and ability to fire while cloaked. I'd say that it would be like the Valiant going up against that Dominion Battleship times 5.
Patrick Stivers You're probably right, but never underestimate how stupid script writers can be. Don't forget that the Enterprise-D (which had held it's own against Borg Cubes in the TV series) was destroyed by a tiny Klingon Bird-of-Prey when they made a movie.
***** To be fair in that particular battle the Klingon's did have the Enterprise-D's shield frequencies as well as the element of surprise which effectively brought them down to size. That's like having a agent inside a castle during a siege just waiting to open the gates for your forces invading from the outside.
***** And you know why it's got no shields? Forget all that stuff about Geordi's visor and the secret shield frequency, we all know the REAL reason --- because Picard left Riker in charge and that ALWAYS leads to things going wrong. Poor Riker....every time the writers needed something to go wrong, they'd get Riker on the bridge. LOL Live Long and Prosper \\//
Its not the Negh'Var. Its a Negh'Var battle cruiser, but it doesnt have an official name. Even when you look it up, its called the Regent's flagship. Its actually twice the size of a Negh'Var battle cruiser (or so the specs say), odds are the hull is probably twice as thick.
So.... how do the control such a complex flight path by pushing a few binary buttons? :/ Even Galaxy Quest, an outright spoof of Trek, got it right with the joystick controllers.
WASD keyboard controls probably. i mean my keyboard has only half the buttons of the defiants helm, yet i manage to pilot ships in game all the time, and that includes controlling the weapons. maybe the controls for the ship arent as complicated as you'd think?
Do a Google image search for Star Trek helm console. There's several images of the actual screens. It gives a pretty good idea of how they're supposed to work.
Back when it was aired, it was strange to see such a minor episode getting such a large amount of visual effects. Even more strange was that it was effects that couldn't be easily recycled in future battle sequences in the series.
MyOnlyFarph Picard was an excellent combat captain, but unlike Kirk or Sisko he lacked determination. On several occasions we see him confused and asking his crew fro suggestions, while in the same situations Sisko and Kirk would just act.
The prime universe version is nearly half a mile long long according to the visual effects supervisor, and apparently the mirror universe one was scaled up several times. So yeah, at least a mile.
The Mirror Universe Negh'Var is around the Super Star Destroyer from Star Wars size in comparison to the ones from the Prime Universe. It's roughly three times the size of the Jem'Hadar Battleship, i.e. the really big ones you see around Cardassia in the final episode of DS9.
It's funny that the last time we saw the mirror universe Worf,Garak and Kira was in the episode 'The Emperor's New Cloak' where Zeke of the Ferengi Alliance decided to pay the Mirror Universe a visit and ended up being taken prisoner in exchange for a cloaking device which Quark and Rom got from General Martok's ship and with help from the Rebels they freed Zeke and defeated the Mirror Universe Worf and Kira and Garak was killed.
Nope ; ) Actually it's the opposite. The Negh'var in this episode was depicted as being over 1800m (three times larger than the normal one). All the other ships are sized appropriately.
In the heat of the battle requiring split second decisions and flight adjustments, they have time to have a conversion and stare at each other while they swap places.
+matt murfin For good reason. She's a bare-bones ship designed specifically for warfare, the only true 'warship' in the Federation fleet at the time. gamester512 really? i thought the akira was a warship to, and at the moment in star trek online i cant remember what im using its either a galaxy X or a T5 prometheus
Is it just me, or does the Defiant's size change multiple times in this battle scene? First it seems to be the same size as a Bird of Prey (too big) then it seems to be even smaller than the Negh'Var's bridge (too small).
Klingon ships all use the same basic shape, the only thing that differentiates the class of the ship and model would be the size of the ship. The bird of prey they destroyed would most likely be B'rel class.
There are several different sized Bird of Prey classes. Plus the Mirror Universe's version of the Negh'Var is a much larger ship than its counterpart in our universe. It also seems to be a unique ship.
It's called script adaptability. Trek uses it to explain everything that is illogical in their universe. Despite having loveable characters and good acting, Star Trek writing has always been crappy at best. If you want well-written Sci-Fi, watch Sci-Fi's best kept secret: 'Babylon 5,' which manages to do everything right.
Rudolf Trost Heard Babylon 5 is a gem ;) You are right with Star Trek's writing, but I can just speak for myself, I just watched Star Trek for the message of Gene Roddenberry (which got lost after TNG)
The Neg Var for this universe was bigger because of the same reason a Star Destroyer is huge, without major super powers to compete with like the Federation or Romulans, and only Rebels to crush it's logical you want a daunting ship to scare the little fighters into submission and if they refuse, level the planet or station. The Galor is similar in size to the Prime NegVar
The differences in size scale are due to the fact that the TV producers NEVER paid much attention to this throughout ANY of the Star Trek series. Look at all the years of obsessed fans racking their brains trying to invent explanations for all the different sizes of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey. If you love Star Trek (and who doesn't?) you just have to let some things slide. Live Long and Prosper \\//
Prime universe Galor and Keldon are roughly the same size, the Keldon has a bit more bulk but they're comprobable to a Vor'cha. See Way of The Warrior when the Prakesh is destroyed.
How did the Mirror Universe Klingons become a superpower after the Terrans obliterated their homeworld? I know that was a long time ago, but it seems like the sort of thing that should be pretty impossible to come back from.
Mirror Spock preached peaceful reforms after "our" Kirk left, rising to commander in chief of the Terran Empire in the process of doing so; however, once he had completed his reforms, the Empire was too weak to defend itself from the newly-formed Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.
Valiant Wrestling Federation Yes, I remember that much. But the destruction of Kronos should have set the Klingons back too far to be in a position to capitalize on Terran weakness, even in tandem with the Cardassians-who should have been so far ahead of the Klingons at that point that they might as well do what they did on their own.
Probably about as far as model photography can be taken on an above-average TV drama budget, very impressive work. The Mirror Universe episodes on DS9 got progressively more ridiculous, but having this OTT space battle certainly smoothed things over at the time.

En (HD) Star Wars VIII The Last Jedi | Poe Dameron Destroying A Dreadnought en 2:50 el comandante dice una frase parecida que se escucha en 2:34 y el ataque es parecido.
I hate how inaccurate the Klingons targeting scanners are in this episode, even pure luck would should have landed more hits on the Defiant. Pretty silly if you ask me. Also how did that small little attack ship take out a bird of prey in a single shot? Still a fun battle though.
ransom182 those were outdated bird of preys and the defiant's arsenal were designed to fight borg cubes and spearhead the fleet in the dominion war, also the defiant was the first of its class during this series.
So you're saying the Defiant has some ability to confuse enemy targeting sensors? I actually meant the small fighter piloted by mirror Julian - a one hit kill against a BOP? Impressive for such a tiny craft.
After that they probably built a few more defiant class ships in that universe. It was a ship named defiant that let star fleet know about mirror universes. So it must be their sides enterprise.
Aiming. You may shoot your projectile at the speed of light (in this case, the projectiles are photons), but the turrets that will aim your laser at the target will still need to correctly track and target the vessel. If you need to swat down an enemy that is close by, then your turrets need to have a high tracking speed (bigger arc), which in turn means that the turret houses a smaller, less heavier gun. Which means lesser fire power, which might be useless against heavily fortified enemies. A heavier gun has slow turrets to aim it, because it is heavier, and because only a slower turret can actually aim properly (inertia, if you provide sudden acceleration, then the momentum will be higher and thus stopping at the right place would be much much more difficult, thus inaccurate. So actually your bigger heavier guns are useful only against long range big targets. This is shown in the episode as by getting closer and then circling the bigger ship Sisko essentially never allows the ship track him with their weapons.
Because it's a plot devices and Sisko can't die nothing more. Klingons are as advanced as the Federation or any major species in the show. That mirror Negh'var should have destroy it prettily easily. An escort ship can't beat a Battleship/Dreadnought.
It doesn't matter what it was build for. In First Contact it was almost destroyed, had not the Enterprise-E come to save it. People really tend to exagerate it, they saw a mighty powerful ship, no doubt it is still overall it would be rank as a cruiser in a frame of an escort vessel.
It's rumored that the USS Vengence was designed after the Starfleet Section 31 and Khan of the " Into Darkness" universe saw Defiant in action in the Prime universe. Unfortunately both Khan and Admiral Marcus chose to be smug, murder thirsty jerks with the monstrous Vengence . . . until Enterprise trashed her.

How did their warp engines still work after all that. On starfleet ships that the first thing to go.
Klingon ship design is very rugged to make up for the increasing technical gap to other powers as Klingons apparently don't make have good R&D. The Negh'var probably has 3 times as much warp drive as it needs to get somewhere.

I bet thats what Shinzon said to his Reman Engineers when designing the Scimitar

The Peregrine-class has several sizes. The Val Jean had 40 crew onboard when it was pulled into the Delta quadrant
Not to mention scaling for visual impressions is more important than realism. If it's a two seater- fighter, you will never see that ship per scale against an 1800 m long ship. That's why scaling is off in EVERY battle scene in DS9, it's designed to have an impact.

You're probably right, but never underestimate how stupid script writers can be.
LOL

Even Galaxy Quest, an outright spoof of Trek, got it right with the joystick controllers.

Damn. That Negh'Var has to be like a Mile long!

WilfredIvanhoe The Mirror Negh'Vars are bigger than the Prime Universe ones? I didn't know that.
It's called script adaptability. Trek uses it to explain everything that is illogical in their universe. 3:00 to 3:55 The I.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 and Terran Freedom Raider vs The I.K.S. Negh'Var Regency 1 Combat Cruiser.
The Keldon is the almost big as the Neg'Var.
The differences in size scale are due to the fact that the TV producers NEVER paid much attention to this throughout ANY of the Star Trek series. Look at all the years of obsessed fans racking their brains trying to invent explanations for all the different sizes of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey.

I've never quite understood how you can miss with a weapon that moves at the speed of light and is targeted using a computer.
