  • Star Trek: Enterprise In a Mirror Darkly Sequence from when Archer and crew fire up the USS Defiant (TOS) until they escape from the dock where the ship was being held, edited to be continuous from Part1's conclusion to the beginning of Part 2. My Favorite Enterprise episode, showcasing the old Kirk style ship with CGI technology. Well Done, especially the weaponry.

    this scene is absolutely perfect. they even got the S3 TOS bridge sound effects right. pure gold, and irrefutable in-uinverse proof that TOS-era technology does not have to be retconned to look and sound believable in the 21st century.

    I always thought revisiting the TOS era would seem dated but I absolutely love the way they remained so faithful to the original designs here. Plus it definitely seems much more advanced and futuristic compared to the NX class, despite the NX being more detailed

    • @nikolai60
      @nikolai60 3 роки тому +30

      I think that it works well because the NX is more detailed as it's more or less just bolted together cramming in as much as possible, but the Constitution class looks refined, like once they got the tech they then spent time refining it instead of constantly looking for another new thing to bolt on. So for a while things were almost too sleek, too covered up, impractically smoothed out and simplified to make sure it looked as elegant as possible compared to it's predecessors, giving it it's iconic look. Then as time went on the pendulum swung back towards practicality, trying to reach a better harmony of form and function, starting with the refits.

      +Captain Kirk Gaming Not really. It was good, don't get me wrong, but, frankly, when compared to the other Trek series, I'd put it at the worst. The writing wasn't the greatest, the 'planet of the week' episodes were rather dull, and it's kinda hard to watch. The better episodes (such as the Trouble with Tribbles, and the original mirror episode Mirror, Mirror) had something either very unique, or was very humorous. Both the Trouble with Tribbles, and Mirror, Mirror were touched on again, particularly in DS9. But, a lot of TOS series is kind of forgettable, and rather dull. But, we love it, because it was the original, and it set the track for 50 years of a glorious Sci-Fi series. But, if there's one thing I've noticed with TV shows, and some movies, the first is the worst. In TV shows, the first season isn't going to the best season (except Firefly because there only was one season) because of the fact that they're still setting things up, and haven't gotten the proper footing yet. Every Trek series went through this. TOS season 2, TNG season 3-7, DS9 seasons 4-7, VOY seasons 4-7, and ENT season 4. Even with movies. Remember the Motion Picture, and how crumby it was compared to the Wrath of Kahn? So, frankly, I do believe TOS is the worst Star Trek series. But, that's just my opinion.

      @OpenMawProductions 7 років тому +6

      That had nothing to do with it, Teather, that really is just a big rumour.
      JJ Abrams wanted to redesign everything completely. That was his choice. If you look at a lot of the designs proposed for the 2009 film, some of the Enterprise designs were very close to the original, some were very close to the TMP era refit with different nacelles. Same for the interiors. There's a very high res image of a bridge concept for the Enterprise that is much more evocative of the TOS design, with reds and bright splashes of color.
      Abrams simply wanted to strike a new visual look. Which, there's nothing nessacarily wrong with that. However if you don't think the original 1960s Enterpise can be updated to look the part for a modern film, I suggest looking up either the "TOS 1.5 Enterprise" design, or the very very excellent "The Prime Alternative Enterprise" which shows just how far you can push the original Enterprise with subtle detailing to get it to look good.

    I think it actually did a pretty good job of showing the NX as the start of a "design lineage" that would ultimately produce the Constitution and the thinking that went into how to make the NX look more "primitive," like the cramped submarine-like architecture and bare-metal appearance vs. the "roomier" Connie with its wider corridors, higher ceilings and "cleaner" appearance with machinery tucked behind bulkheads. Works even better if you stick the ST:09 Kelvin in the middle of the comparison.

      I'm pretty sure if you if you go back to the comments of 2003 for when the first clips for Enterprise came out, you'd find similar comments to how Enterprise wasn't real Star Trek and had no respect for the continuality and fans.
      Fast forward to 2018, and one thing a lot of people seem to agree with is that while Enterprise got off to a poor start, the writing and acting steadily improved, and that by its cancelation the episodes they were churning out were some of the best in the franchise, but to few people had stayed with the series up to that point.
      Discovery is far from perfect, but keep in mind the actors and writers need to be given time to ion out the kinks in the series. TOS didn't really get popular until it went into syndication, the first season of TNG had some appalling episodes that Discovery hasn't come close to replacing yet, and as I said before Enterprise wasn't perfect as the start.
      I'm just making this comment as I think Discovery can improve, but it won't have the chance if people just right it off.
      15 years from now, 12 years after Discovery was cancelled after the 3rd season due to poor rating, do you really want to be listening to everyone moan about how Amazon's Prime new series Star Trek Resurrection is a giant slap in the face to fans, and that Discovery was just as good series by the end because that was just when the cast and writers were churning out superior episodes to season 1?
      Just saying, it could easily happen.

    The Defiant seen in the episode is the same one in the episode " The Tholian Web" in the original series. According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia the ship disappered near the Tholian territory.." The Defiant was last seen shimmering, suspended between two dimensions, until it faded into interspace" . Pretty cool, "In A Mirror, Darkly" is like part 2 of that original episode.

    I think the thing all of you critics are missing is this: It is a tv series, it is supposed to be enjoyable, it is supposed to be fun to watch, not a college course on the history of star trek. Keep in mind also that TOS was bound by out of date social values and ideas. Also, something I've noticed is that with every new series a discontinuity pops up, it's not just ENT but ALL of them.

    One of the things I find most interesting about this bit it Forrest. He is a Patriot of the Terran Empire, which is the evil version meant to be the antithesis of the good Federation. Despite this, he demands his crew abandon him on the ship (something the crew are clearly reluctant to do) and buys them as much time as he can.
    Makes one wonder if the Empire has more like him, or if they are all men like Mirror Archer or Admiral Black.

    This whole arc with the Defiant is like the Federation StarFleet’s worst nightmare. About a primitive hostile race getting their hands on one of their ships or their technology.
    Anyone who questions why the Federation and StarFleet doesn’t share technology need only look to the Terran Empire in these episodes from Enterprise to receive their answer.

Like you said before, there are canon evidences that suggest the NX-01 is too capable for it time period. There are many technology like transporter that don't suppose to exist in the middle of the 22nd Century.
