    0:16 An Exercise that i have seen referred to as '' the spider'' it is excellent for sweep and alternate picking. I use it exclusively to practice sweep picking. I first saw it in Joe's ''Guitar Secrets'' book. Joe is right, it is horrible sounding.

    Hammers and pulls vs. picking everything has nothing to do with technical skill, it's all about using your ears and deciding what sounds better in the piece of music in question. John Petrucci, for exmaple, alternate picks almost EVERYTHING, and when he doesn't, it's usually just so he can play faster (straight from his mouth on a recent DVD, I'm not just assuming) and sometimes it's a huge miss on his part. There's a place for alternate picking and a separate place for legato, or both combined.

    "yeah dude i was guna say, not even shawn lane was 20 nps!"
    Search UA-cam for "guitar speed record", first link.
    It shows a guy named Della Vega playing Flight of the Bumblebee at 21 nps, flawlessly. It's fucking ridiculous, as good an exhibition of economy of motion as you'll ever see -- the fingers on his left hand barely move.
    He's pretty shitty player, though, oddly enough. But insanely fast. :)

    Usually the electronics are different, as well as the pick ups are custom made for him...not his "custom pick ups" different strings (obvi) and the bodies are usually a bit different (woods and the necks). Like Zakk Wylde's sig Les Paul, for example, is no where near as heavy as the one he plays on stage. The actual guitar that he plays weighs about 35 pounds, the way that they "hollow" the body is completely different.

    well, if you think about what a motif in a house would be -- it's kind of a vibe, a certain angle or attitude that you're trying to convey. You could go with a "southwestern" or "modern" motif... maybe even an "outer space" or "psychadelic" motif. Some scales can give you a certain feeling, or you might draw a mental image when you hear a particular grouping of notes. That's what he means by motif. Each scale has a particular feel/vibe to it. Does that make sense?

    Joe is great,like other guitar players he can get something out of the guitar.
    I've seen joe and most of the guitar players live,the others bored the crap out of me(i wanted to shoot myself).
    But all of the joe's songs have a meaning,melody for example searching and souls of distortion is out of this world

  • @Worshipsatch

    And what makes u think that Satriani has no feel in his speed?? Heck he uses speed only to express his feelings (thats why many of his songs dont even have fast stuff like "slow and easy" or "starry night")...
    He uses speed to express violent feelings like "devil's slide" or "Crushing Day"... And his fast stuff is EXTREMELY in the pocket and melodious.
    Trust me, even I hate shredders without soul, But satriani is NOT one of them.
    Check out "always with me always with u" "starry night"

  • @Worshipsatch

    u need to get a life and learn to appreciate ALL forms of music... yea I DO listen to almost all forms of music (including Indian).
    Also, having a low bridge dosent necessarily mean "easy to play". An Inexperienced player will find it ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE to play this clean due to high sensitivty. Also u can get MUCH richer sounds using a processor. These playersjust use these sounds coz it suits them best....

    id say he plays with a little more finesse than gilbert. saying satch isnt technically good enough is a load. listen to his music he does plenty "of technically picked note passages" but he makes it sound more musical because he only throws those passages in from time to time.

  • @XxdieformetalxX
    @XxdieformetalxX 15 років тому

    Yeah I know, people need to understand that gods like him are not shredders. Complicated shapes of playing on the neck are where it's at. People like Herman Li and Yngwei are not, or shouldn't, be considered gods because all they do is play really fast scales.

  • @Bwitched0
    @Bwitched0 16 років тому

    What did he say, and where can we find it? His songs are just amazing and you aren't forced to listen to his lessons if you think they're useless. Personnally i don't like any method but this one is completely useful. Don't judge him because i think you would give anything to get a half of his level.

    you never listened to midnight then, i guess.
    Or "a love eternal". But it's just a question of taste.
    And yes he is a better player than Hendrix, but Hendrix unchained the whole thing.
    Also i prefer a lot of Hendrix songs just because there are no lyrics in JS' music

If others can't, they're different!

    lol,
    he meant that he didn't know where the e minor scale was, so he practiced it this way. if you look carefully (normally, it is obvious, but not in your case), he wasn't playing 1 note. he played noted from e minor scale (as i think. i may be wrong in this part).

  • @Almario95

    AND HE IS WRONG,..
    Using a pick to play guitar is using just 25% of the guitar capacities since you can't do couterpoints with the three other fingers.
    That's a pity that Satriani still didn't understand that...

    I think it's essential to practice both. Clean (even unplugged)so you can have the best idea of how you sound, but you can't learn how to play on high gain untill you play at "11" and learn how to master the "excess noise".
