A man goes into the wilderness and emerges five days later. Other than having eaten one fish no one would ever know he was there. Truly appreciate this!
Actually he leaves many witnesses behind, all those fishes ( muinus one ) can say "There was a man here, who takes them out, judges their weight and gently releases them back" 😂.
To whoever is reading this, I hope you heal from the things you don’t speak about. I hope you find peace within your day. If all you did was get out of bed today, have a glass of water, or even just did whatever you could, just know that’s the best you could do at that moment and that’s okay. Everyone sleep well and I hope the waves of relaxation wash over you. Sending love and healing and light to all of you.
Thanks. 😊 you too bud.
Holy crap I didn’t realize I needed that
Thanks bro
Behind the scenes...recorded 800 clips on this trip and over 400 of them were deleted. I delete clips that I don't like or don't use because the data storage needs for filming trips are huge. There have been many trips this summer and I'm just trying to keep some stuff flowing, but I'm mostly out tripping while I can. The longer trips will take longer to edit :)
Keep some for winter ...
You do awesome work!
I do the same thing when it comes to deleting footage! If I take six shots trying to capture the mood of a particular lake or sunset or animal, and half of them are blurry, those are getting completely thrown out. Why waste the data on things I wouldn't want to keep?
That's a lot of deletion... Good to know I'm not the only one that does that though.
I love that a fart made it into this one at the end of day 3.
Your channel has become my new meditation app lol! So beautiful, peaceful, good thoughts, beautiful views, great cinematography. It calms me when the world seems so crazy! Thank you 🙏
Hahah thank you so much Terrie!!
I don't even watch half of videos this is my go to sleep
"I Quit My Job to Go Camping" should be the title of your book.
Hahaha love it
@@LostLakes Only half-joking. You should write a book.
@@SchmutzieOutdoors retirement goals 🙂
@@LostLakes Another great vid. Loved the mink footage and those falls are gorgeous. "These walleyes are too big" is another potential title for the book. Good problem to have, eh? Thx for this. Great as always.
You really should write one, Jon. Maybe not now, but in the future! I truly believe you're the next reincarnation of Kevin Callan, and it won't be long before we pester you into doing it anyway! 😁
I love how respectful you are to the first nation's land you visit. You are my favorite wilderness creator. Thank you for always being honest and respectful!
Thanks so much Danielle!
John, I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks for being a huge advocate for barbless hooks and always releasing spawning sized fish. As your channel continues to grow and reach more people, I hope that this message gets across and more anglers choose to use these methods that you preach.
Really appreciate that Alex!!
I agree, he has a ' world class attitude ' to living in the back country.
When I fished these lakes as a 10 year old , it never crossed anyone's mind, and barbless hooks were unknown,, we may have been the first people to drop a line in some of them.
6-8 pound pickerel were normal in this area, in the deep pools. The University river was a spot people in Wawa tried to find for many years. A lot of 4 and 5 pound specks came home
Hanging on for dear life to a steel 5' rod and black line on a old school reel, sitting on the floor in the middle of the canoe,,, good times ,,,,,
I second that.
The quality of these videos is amazing. This is one very impressive outdoorsman.
The HD videography! The Fishing! The location. Fantastic!!
Thanks Michael!! 😁
I swear I felt this one uploading - just an hour ago I was sitting there thinking "sure could use a lost lakes video right now...he must be busy tripping these days" now here it is!
Hahah I do it all for you CSD!
Jon, your videography just keeps getting better and better..beautiful lakes.
Thank you John!
I always appreciate hearing more about your appreciation and respect for the fish. The other wildlife too, but especially the fish.
Thank you again NC, appreciate you hearing me out on that less fun subject :)
I'm absolutely amazed at how crystal clear the water is on Lake Superior. It almost looks as though you could stick a straw in it and just drink right out of the lake.
I have no idea why I’m becoming so addicted to these videos? Perhaps it’s the ability to be part of a picturesque outdoor adventure without all of the work, insects, and drawbacks of camping. In the end this is truly great content and has me fantasizing about simplifying my life.
You found a special place. Thank you for taking the rest of us along even if it’s vicariously.
My husband and I have been watching you both for years!! We find you guys so inspirational 😀 We live and explore in your area, hope to run into you one day 👍
Very much appreciated K&P!!!
Another lost lakes wilderness adventure. Beautiful shots from inventive camera work, crisp editing, smooth pacing, cool music track, all pro grade in my book. Nicely done. Takes a TON of behind scenes work to do all that, all by yourself, and make a grade A movie with so much heart. Thanks Jon! edit: At 51:26 Kathy said you been away from Erin too long. ha
Greatly appreciate that Bob!!! Hahaha without a doubt!
I've just got back from 3 days on one of our rivers, I envy your peace and solitude, I've had nothing but motorboats and noisy canoeists. This has restored my faith that not everywhere is full of 'humanity' on this planet...yet.
A stunning location, filmed and edited beautifully as always, and well worth staying up until 1am to watch.
Thanks a lot Si! I know the feeling...it's hard to begrudge people for their own hobbies, however noisy, but man does a combustion engine ever rob one of a feeling of peace
It's been a busy week with summer Grad school and a migraine the last few days. This was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday evening and relax
Oy...with a front row seat to Erin's summer with grad school, I empathize. Glad to clear your head for a short while.
Thanks Chris :)
Great job scouting out such a remote but stunningly beautiful route. I am not real big on fishing but I cannot look away from your videos. Great scenic lake and river footage, wildlife shots and I also enjoy watching your food preparation at camp.
Very much appreciated Walt!!
Great video. Was out fishing on a lake in Haliburton years ago and catching nothing but Rock Bass close to shore. Rockies are an invasive species in that area so we're asked not to put them back. Was looking for a place to dispose of them when a little head popped up on shore. I must have fed that mink 20 Rockies. It started getting bolder and bolder and eventually swam out and tried to climbed into my boat. Time to leave, but was pleased I disposed of Rockies to a deserving creature. Never encourage people to feed wildlife but figured this was an acceptable exception. 🐟
LOL! Hilarious mental image of that... I didn't know rock bass were invasive actually. Thanks Jeff!
I really loved those mink shots it's like it was posing for you
Hahah the rock was its runway
Your videography is fantastic, it really captures the essence of travel/ wandering in the bush. I find myself watching a school of minnows, or stopping to take a look at some funky mushrooms along my adventuresas well. Your ability to record that is priceless for those that don't have the opportunity. Great work!
Fascinated by those little details out there :) Thanks so much Ed!!!
Thanks for the ride. That rock kettle was cool. Excellent videography. You’re my favorite Canadian.
Greatly appreciate that David!!
Jon, I think this is some of your best videography yet. I could feel and smell those lakes and land. I truly like your excitement every time you pull in a fish. It is always like it is your first time catching one. Man do I have some Nova Craft envy. Could you tell me the weight of that canoe? Maybe the mink is your spirit animal~~~ Also enjoyed the flower shots of Japanese iris, tiger lily and wild rose. Whoooooo Buddy)))
Thanks so much Shug!! The Pal in Nova Craft's TuffStuff layup is 50lbs. Nice balance of weight and ruggedness. The gel coat seems to chip fairly easily though
@@LostLakes TuffStuff......explains how it takes a good bit of dragging over those log jams. Appreciate the info. Dinner for breakfast is a stellar idea.
Congrats on award shug! U deserve it! U two in quetico or BWCAW!?!?.
Still the best on the tube, your work putting this video together must have been fun… top notch..
Thanks so much Jim!!
Nothing beats fresh dark walleye out of those hard-to-reach lakes in the north. Awesome videos man.
Ah man, so good. Thanks a lot SGV!
Sunday vibes, watching calm yt videos of wilderness adventures.
I love your passion for fishing and the grace you show these creatures Jon. And your thrush is to my loon! So appreciative of the amazing audio of all the wildlife and mink are so darn cute! Great trip, always impressive skills, and thanks for another 💜 Barret
💚💚
Wow!!! Thank you so much for the journey!!! Amazing filming of that pristine wilderness, so quiet and pure.
Glad to see you back going, taking advantage of time not limited by work.
Freedom...aah. Been enjoying your goodies very much since this trip too. Had the granola with fruit and powdered milk for the first time yesterday at the end of a 10-day trip and that's an instant winner...no cooking, very good and satisfying. Thanks Bern!!
All that you do is with respect and joy. Hardship includes the beautiful. What could be better than that? Thank you for sharing your love for our planet.
I greatly appreciate that Kit 💚💚
I love how you show the literature you bring with you. Its put me personally on to some good reads.😀 Many thanks!
Thanks Ed :) Seven Fallen Feathers is one of the most important books I've read
@@LostLakes I read that page you showed. In September for my solo I'm bringing "The Four Agreements" by Don Ruiz. Kinda similar in feel with your book I think. Wisdom stuff.
I agree and I'm going to buy it right now! I have the Four Agreements already just waiting to be read! Thanks guys!
Living now in the city of Victoria, this former country boy misses hearing the haunting cries of the loons; thanks for sharing Jon
What an awesome trip and video! Thanks for taking us along again and for all the fantastic camera angles and shots. A person has to remind themselves how much extra work it is setting up cameras and getting all the footage! Loved the scenery and fishing.
Much appreciated IM!! 🙂🙂
I don't know what is more incredible? The minx video or the water carved pothole? The composition of the video is excellent.
Thanks Michael!! The pothole *blows* my mind
Jon, WOW. The scenery, the critters, the humor, just Wow. Great video. Thanks, Jon. I miss Erin. She must be busy with school.
Thanks Rita! I miss her out there too :( But she has a break in August so we've got big plans 😁
Jon, Thanks for making an awesome film of this trip. I was there In 2009. We continued on down the Cascade from the Twin Lakes. I had no idea the fishing was that incredible. Cheers to you!
Wow the Cascade...that must've been a gnarly trip. Thank you!
Cascade was low water. The beavers built a bomb proof dam at the start of the Cascade. We pulled, poled and paddled in inches of water for miles. River picked up where we could run the whitewater down to Superior. What a beautiful run. Spectacular scenery and views. Thanks again for all your hard work!
Thanks again for your
Absolutely loved this. You captured what a good n basic canoe trip is all about. Just go with how you feel that moment , that day . Well done
Thanks so much Scott!!
I noticed your liking that kayak paddle more and more. I does sorta grow on you. This trip has brought back some amazing memories. Thanks tons 👍🇨🇦
Very much so, for touring I rarely pick up the single blade now. Faster and easier on my body. My pleasure, thanks Tom! :)
Great video. It's nice to see a National Park get some love. Thanks!
Thanks Jody! Yeah it's hard to believe it was my first backcountry trip in a NP, but I guess opportunities are somewhat limited for that in ON
Very entertaining trip. The walleye and brook trout were beautiful. I thought we'd lost you for sure at 50:39...but you must've eaten, hydrated and rested and were back. Made me laugh! Well done.
Hahah thanks a lot Thomas
Excellent trip, Jon! Thanks for sharing!
This may be your loveliest video yet! Suggestion-would like to see a video of you making your vegetable curry, or at least the written recipe in a text reply.
Thanks so much Peggy! My veggie curry recipe is from my sister and I only have a photo of it, but it's similar to this :)
littlesunnykitchen.com/chickpea-and-potato-curry/
It's not dehydrator specific by any means. One adjustment that's necessary is to diced the potatoes more finely. Like 1cm cubes. They're tougher to dehydrate and rehydrate so the smaller the better.
Excellent trip, Jon! You're such a great story teller! Thank you for your efforts!
Thanks a million Moe!!
Big thanks for taking us along your trip through paradise land! What an amazing scenery. Love it. Again special thanks for making these longer episodes, instead of those short 15-20 min ones which doesn't give much room for relax and "getting into the moment" feelings.
Appreciate that Henrik!
@@LostLakes You talk and use dehydrated food a lot in your films. Tried to find info about your method, but did not find much. Did I miss it or can you direct me to a page/link there it is shown / explained ? Thanks.
Did a little meal planning and dehydrating overview last spring here: ua-cam.com/video/u3oeLbT-t_E/v-deo.html
I'll probably never do recipe-specific videos as I just have no passion for it but Kevin Outdoors on YT is much more knowledgeable on the subject. I recommend his channel for that stuff (he also recently put out a fantastic book called Backcountry Eats: amzn.to/3DD8BkO)
I know you aren't a big fan of gear videos, but as a canoe nerd I'd love to see a video of you talking about the canoes you own/have owned and what you like/dislike about them, pros/cons and what you like to use each canoe for!
yes please. what do you think of collapsing boats and kayaks.
Hahah got that right Gavin...however there might be downtime for that someday. It's a great topic. In the meantime, I just wrote a review of the Pal for their site which is copied here if you want to read it. It speaks to some of that.
99% of my tripping had been in prospectors before I got my Pal. I looked at dozens of models from all manufacturers but landed on the Pal and I liked it immediately. A little narrower than a prospector but still very stable, faster, and less impacted by crosswinds.
I bought this boat primarily for solo trips (with the option for tandem) in northern Ontario off the beaten path and got the Tuffstuff layup for durability. Jagged rocks are not friendly to the gel coat (which I’ve touched up with West System epoxy), but the hull is strong. My bags didn’t fit flat when soloing initially, but after removing the second seat (an easy operation), there’s tons of room for my 115L pack and 60L barrel. If packing for a tandem trip, fitting a second 115L pack might be tight and then the prospector may have just that extra little bit of room needed to do so.
I took the Pal on a solo trip on Lake Superior from Silver Islet to Rossport and didn’t lose one day to conditions, despite being undecked (with a dry suit of course). In some tough wind and 2-3ft swells, it was very stable. In fact, at one point I was distracted while filming some video and a huge swell broke on a shoal I hadn’t noticed. It took me for a wild ride but the boat responded and saved my bacon.
I run a little whitewater but nothing over class II and I’m comfortable with using this boat undecked for that application. I increasingly use a double blade on flat water due to a wrist issue and my 250cm paddle is just enough for the Pal, though 260 or 270 would be better. I got the aluminum trim which is my preference (I don’t like maintenance) and the skid plates. It’s a versatile boat, a pleasure to paddle, and I look forward to taking it around Ontario for many years.
Hey Carol, they have their place but for what I do, a canoe is the way to go, and has been proven over thousands of years on this land to be the optimal vessel. Inflatables I just don't trust, especially with hooks flying around, and to me they only makes sense when the amount of overland travel exceeds the amount of water travel. Collapsible I would only bother with if it was required for a fly-in, but I doubt that'll ever be the case for me. More fussy and expensive without much benefit for my uses...I certainly wouldn't go through that process for each portage. And kayaks I would only want on the ocean or maybe Superior, but the canoe gets by on Superior. Too difficult to portage and less cargo room for big packs and fishing rods and such
Yes sir, nothing like out of the water fresh walleye cheeks!!!!! My goodness, that made me hungry. Beautiful video.
Hahah so good. Thanks a lot GoFeesh!
Your videos are so calming and your video work is just a step above. This has been an absolute joy to watch.
Appreciate that so much Sam!!!
Such a simple thing, but love it when you say thank you to the fish.
💚💚
Gonna watch now 👍
That overlook, looked like a backdrop to a really awesome bad old movie. Didn’t look real. Wish I could see it! Incredible
I found you from the recent trip you did with Joe and I'm really happy I did. Top notch stuff.
Same here
Contagious, Liked n Subd too. Thx Joe. Grt content from you both. 👍
Very much appreciated Sam (and Josh) [and Valorie lol]!!
Same but from last year!
You should go watch his earlier videos. His partner Erin is the best too. You will all want to travel with her too.
WoW O WoW! No explanation needed. Thanks again Jon. Still miss Erin.
Thanks a lot Larry! We're days away from her getting back in the canoe...very excited for that
Just a smooth video. You have come along way. Props to you for the end result. Well done. So well I wish there was one every week like this one.
Very much appreciated Stan! I'm tripping a lot right now but already have a big backlog to unload later this year, when weekly vids should be a reality :)
Wow, what a trip!! Thank you so much for sharing this video.
You keep saying that you quit your job to go camping. This is your new job, it just has more benefits than most jobs. You have to give yourself more credit Jon. While you are away on trips you are giving up time with your friends and family.
Keep doing what you are doing, we are very appreciative of your time and effort in your videos. I like the idea of you writing a book of your travels, I bet it would be an awesome read!! Thanks again!
Thanks so much Jim!! I like that perspective. And writing is something that interests me, but I see it as a retirement project...once my body can't do this anymore, it'll be a way for me to relive it :)
Love to see the land acknowledgment, keep up the great videos!
🧡 Thanks a lot MrMicmac :)
Absolute beauty of a trip and those walleyes !!! Sunrise on day 5 insane!!
Fantastic content! Keep em comin! God bless Canada!
Thanks so much Ryan!
I like how you thank the fish after you've killed it. It really shows your appreciation for the animal and nature.
💚
Awesome Smeagol impression ! lol
😝😝
Man, the morning shots in this video are incredible. Audio/video. All perfect. Love a still lake in the morning.
Love the way you make your content. I haven’t gotten to go out like this in a while since my son was born. The way you shot this made it feel like I was out there with you. Great content, I’m a new subscriber.
Those fish are bigger than you think.Nice.
Awesome adventure. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these great videos
Much appreciated John!
The color of those walleyes are incredible! It’s making my mouth water, I bet there super delish!
A real delicacy 🙂🙂
That was an amazing falls...great video
Thanks a lot Kathie :)
I live vicariously through you since I can't go camping or fishing anymore so I love watching your videos. I remember being at a Bass pro event and a speaker was talking about how he always used line with a lead core so the line would deeper. I was thinking dude haven't you heard of non-lead weights? No need to risk harming other creatures if your line gets snagged and breaks. I love that you care about the wildlife to use barb less hooks and catch & release when you when you know you don't want to eat a large fish. Thanks for sharing your videos. Looking forward to more.
Very much appreciate that Millie!!
Incredible scenery and adventure! We hope to make it up there someday!
If you find time to make the drive, it's one of my favourite parks in ON, including the frontcountry camping. It'll be worth your while :)
That is a beautiful waterfall
I just love your videos. Feeling like I’m there myself. Sadly I’m just sitting in my couch eating popcorn 😂 keep up the beautiful videos. Hopefully new viewers will be joining your channel
Hahah thanks a lot Mads!
Those extended underwater shots are always a nice touch
I realize that you love your adventures, and it makes me wonder what's your favorite thing of your adventures?
Good Q...I'd have to say laying eyes on places for the first time, especially when they're places that don't get seen much by anyone :)
Another great adventure. Those were some chunky Walleyes my friend, and such beaautiful color to them. I was very glad to see you release those big breeders. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks a lot William :)
Great Vid. I also have a very hard time killing fish that I catch, it’s been a longtime since I’ve eaten what I caught. Keep them coming, tight lines.
Thanks a lot Rob :) I think it should be hard...we're taking a life after all.
Only thing better than a wilderness experience is watching somebody else do all the work on a smart TV from the confines of your couch. I am in You Tube National Park about to set up camp in my living room. It's paradise.
LOL UA-cam National Park--love that. Thanks Patrick!
Wow, thats a great adventure man. Very scenic. Cheers!
Thanks Don! Cheers!
That park is amazing we did it two years before it was a park. Bush wacking through the whole park. The speckled trout fishing was amazing. The flies were really bad. 👍🇨🇦 That’s just part of the trip. Thanks
Ah man, I can only imagine in some of the water deeper in the interior
For all the thousands of fish I've caught in my life, I still find it difficult to kill them, especially brook trout. Although a nice walleye dinner is worth the moral dilemma.
I know, there's something about brook trout in particular...just how precious they are I guess
Pukaskwa has always been such a mysterious place to me but seeing this footage I now understand why it's a national park. Unreal.
The frontcountry campground is one of my favourites in Ontario too...and I've only scratched the surface of the backcountry there which is exciting :) Very worthy park
That was an outstanding video. Great camera work. Thanks
Thanks so much GB :)
thanks for sharing your adventures. I think that mink wanted you to give a piece of fish. cheers!
Hahah thanks for joining me Chris :)
As usual, looking forward to watching :)
That's some beautiful country. Some serious adventure for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Special place. Thanks for joining Michael :)
I would love a vidéo that you explain how you deal with the fear of camping alone at night with wild animal etc. My name is Jean-Marc from Montréal Québec i do a lot of wild camping to
Hey Jean-Marc, that's a good idea. In the meantime, #1 is just due diligence...if I don't leave smelly or tasty things around camp, I can feel at ease. If I realize I didn't pack away the toothpaste or something, that leads to worry. I also try not to clean fish at a campsite. I also like to have my bear spray handy when I sleep and something to whack a bear with (like a beaver-chewed stick or something) can help provide peace of mind too. And I just try to think about the odds....it's very unlikely to have an incident if you're careful with bear awareness :)
@@LostLakes thanks . I Will do my first week in the woods alone this month. Thank you for your answer. I love your vidéos. You do good job .
That 1st huge waterfall was just incredible. Especially just coming around the bend in the river.
I love it when on day 4 or 5 of your trips, the solitude or whatever gets to you, and you do some random, slightly insane acting scenario :) :)
Truly a world class walleye fishery. Thanks for taking us along. :)
Hahah that seems to happen when I find my camping zen. The mind clears and is able to focus on something completely stupid lol. Thanks for joining David!
Ok, good people who are fans of Lost Lakes- what does walleye taste like? I have a friend from Wyoming who describes it as Rocky Mountain lobster? Thoughts?
I fish walleyes all the time, most people like it because it has absolutely no fishy taste at all. To compare it to other fish, I personally think it’s very close to haddock. That is me, not talking about anyone else. I personally prefer river perch because of its taste but it was so over netted by the natives and commercial fishermen now a descent size perch is hard to find and that is in the mighty St. Lawrence river.
@@marceldion4688 Thanks, Marcel! We have perch in the lakes and rivers of northern New England. I have seen lakes in Northern Maine “ boil” when perch go on feeding frenzy. All my best trout lures for lakes resemble the green and yellow perch stripes. Thanks so much for the reply. I look forward to my first Walleye! Tight lines....
I think haddock is a good comparison in the sense that it's not fishy or overly flavourful on its own (compared to trout or salmon, for instance). Takes on flavours well, but on the flip side, I wouldn't eat it unseasoned whereas something like brook trout inherently has a lot of flavour
I really appreciate the land acknowledgement at the beginning of this video. Good on ya!
Appreciate that Jeff 🙂
You’re living the dream Jon!
I hope I never wake up :)
Eyed this area for years back in the late sixties, never materialized. Your living the dream sonny, thanks.

14:15 - "if it goes it goes" love it.
46:47 so much sass :p - you really captured some awesome moments on this trip. Pukaskwa is a real gem thanks for taking us along :D That waterfall! Was that a squirrel impression? smeagol? or are you just spending too much time in the bush? love the paddle pull trick v cool, glad you ate one :D those walleyes were chunky boys
Hahaha thanks a bunch Xan!! Thank you for acknowledging that it was a squirrel...someone else guessed monkey 😆 Some dreadful smeagol impressions are in the bank and coming up though 😅
Man you are an artist and an adventurer, loved the unexpected impression, really upped the most amazing scenery, You are Living the Dream My friend.
You have come a long way. I expect to see you up on the Spanish River to James Bay, or the Winisk River on the way to the Hudson. You were not a great paddler. You recognized it and did things about it. You got the equipment, you went out there and challenged yourself with far superior paddle partners. Continuous, thoughtful advancement of your skills and then we get to watch you meet the challenges. Keep it up Jon. I am rooting for you. P.S. having a trooper of a wife is also smart. We want to see her more too.
never first! lol
Really amazing camera work. Love the tripod shots too as they really bring the scenes to life. Unbelievable walleyes. Love the mink encounter. Great video. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Vince :)
Loved your mink footage! So cute. And the pretty Island site. Gorgeous video as always. When you portage, do you carry you barrel and canoe pack together, or one of them with your boat? Thanks!
Such a photogenic little ball of energy hahah. I go main pack (with smaller tackle backpack slung over my front) first, then the barrel with the canoe. I like to take the canoe last so that I can drop it right in the water at the other end, and so that I have the walk back to improve the trail a bit...pushing the canoe through brush can be so exhausting. Thanks Andrea!
@@LostLakes smart on both accounts re portaging! Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom.
Happy to share this wild ride! a thousand thanks, Say hello to your friend who I miss a bit!
Thanks so much Claire! I miss her out there too, but we're two weeks away from a couple of longer trips together 😁
