One of my favourite Christmas decorations is the cinnamon pine coones you can buy in shops. They smell heavenly! Your pomander is soo pretty . Laura Ingalls Wilder mentioned in one of her books how a friend of the family gave her mother a pomander for Christmas and how it was stuck all over with cloves, would last for months and fill the room with a wonderful scent. She wrote how pleased her mother was with such a gift and how she placed it on the mantle of the fireplace .
I have the Williamsburg book, Kandye. I found it at a garage sale for a buck. I just love it. When I lived in VA, I used to visit Williamsburg with friends to photograh the wreathes. Right now is a great time to visit. Lots of fun events. And the decor is awesome! The shops and restaurants make wreathes that reflect what they sell or are known for. November is a good time to go, too, as there are places set up that sells items you can use in your wreathes, especially mini pineapples. My hubby and I visited last year. I think the COVID years hurt things a bit as the wreathes were not as decorated as they had been when I lived in VA between 2005-2011. Also, I learned from a few of the licals that the downplaying of our early American history in recent years has hurt the tourism that is relied upon by the historical district. So, I highly recommend people to visit. Its a wonderful place to see at any time of year & the rebuilds were done using original house plans, so its very close to how it looked originally. Anyway, thanks for sharing this craft. God bless! Sue 😊❤
You're welcome! Unfortunately part of the tourism decrease has come from the 1619 project. Every tour you take in CW is about slavery and how horrible white people were and are. It's so sad. They don't tell you about the homeowners anymore, just their slaves. The slave story should be told for sure, but it shouldn't be the overwhelming focus. Things need to come back into balance.
Perfect craft again Kandye. Another win for the books. You are really giving us a lot of choices for crafts for Christmas. Thanks. If only I could visit Williamsburg sometime at Christmas. My heart would be full. On the bucket list for someday. God willing.
I love these and make them pretty much every year. I often wondered how available citrus fruits were back in those days. It seems they would have been a rarity to places in the north. I love the way pomanders smell at Christmastime. What a lovely smell. 💕
My girls and I spent a evening making the orange pomanders during the Christmas holidays. They really enjoyed themselves. I had a bulk sized bag of cloves that was twenty years old😳they were still good! Back in the 80’s I was a young housewife with very limited funds. I made most of my Christmas decorations with dried orange slices , apples, gingerbread men. Made everything smell so good.
You always do such a nice job sharing! We have made pomanders a couple different times. They are so beautiful in looks and aroma at Christmas. I loved the video of your spray with the oranges, too. Thank you for sharing!
I remember when doing that as a kid, back then I didn’t have the awl and got lots of blisters from inserting each and everyone of them. It was worth it. I put a small wooden stick into it and a pink ribbon. It last very long, more then a year if not more.
Enjoyed this, may have to try it too. I'd love to go to W'burg for the Grand Illumination as well....some day !! Love to see you make cookies and decorate those...Iooks like you have cookie cutters hanging around-maybe?... 😁
Thank you! I don't have a place other than home to bake the cookies, but I could certainly try to show how to decorate them. Gingerbread with white icing would be easy.
I was in the SCA. It is a medieval Restoration group. As a party game we would clove lemons and oranges, we gave them to someone. If they took the clove out with their teeth they would give you a kiss in the lips, if they took it out with their fingers they would give you a kiss on the hand
I love the crafts you do. I made the wreath, it turned out OK ish. With the oranges I would try using essential oil of cloves and put a few drops on. It makes it smell great. I love the tool you use. I'm going to get one of those for December. Rather then trying to use a skinny crochet hook. Cheer from the pacific northwest. Canada side.
I've only walked through Colonial Williamsburd once. But did go in some of the shops. The Old Bruton church was open to the public . It alone is well worth the visit !!
Absolutely! There is an old Christmas special you can watch on UA-cam. It's from the 1970's and it's the Perry Como Christmas Special from Colonial Williamsburg. John Wayne is in it and it is well worth watching because they go all over the town and end the show in the church.
@@cabincrafts2239 I will look for it !! Al Roker was on Food Network with a special from Colonial Williamsburg ! It was a reenactment of open hearth cooking and what it was like to be a free man of colour at that time period !! Dont know if its on youtube but it was good !!
Thank you for this wonderful videos i was looking to make penny rugs and you popped up and now im working threw all your videos and i love your videos so looking towards getting to the most recent and i am loving the history about things
When I was little I made one but thought I had to cover every single bit of the orange with cloves…AND I didn’t use anything to poke them in so my thumbs were sore for days 😂
Love these but I tried it last year with smaller tangerines and they got moldy. How do I prevent that? I was at Williamsburg one time only but it was Christmas and it was beautiful. Would love to go again someday
Mistletoe is only available for a very short time. It would have to probably be faux foliage. There are more ideas than there is time, lol! I might do a kissing ball in the future but not sure if it will be this year.
Came for the crafts, stayed for the stories. Fun and interesting.
Thank you!

FYI ~ these also help keep your feline friends out of your Christmas trees 🎄 just hank them on low branches. You’re welcome ;)
Thank you for the tip. My tree was knocked over 3 times last year 🤣😂
Thanks Monique! That's why I have dogs!
I bet those oranges smell wonderful. Great decoration.
Thank you! They do!
I'm reminded of chocolate oranges. Still found them when I was a kid. Not so much, now. I'd almost forgotten about pomanders.
I haven't made these in years! I don't know why I stopped! So pretty.
This will be a beautiful decoration for Christmas table set up.
yes it will! Tuck some greenery in between the oranges in your bowl.
Another great crafting video !! Keeper coming ! I love learning new craft projects ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Ooooo, when they shrivel up you can book them on the stove and the smell would be amazing 😍 xx
Well done Kandye! I'll bet they smell just wonderful as they're being made & as they're drying too! Thanks for sharing!

Have a terrific Thanksgiving.
Thanks! You too!
Thank you.
Love yourchannel
Thank you!
Love these Kandye!!! How long will these keep ? :) I want to try them
Thank you! I would make them maybe a week or two before Christmas because they will begin to shrink as they dry.
Love these but I tried it last year with smaller tangerines and they got moldy. How do I prevent that? I was at Williamsburg one time only but it was Christmas and it was beautiful. Would love to go again someday
I've not had that happen but I always use regular oranges and apples and lemons. Not sure unless tangerines are more juicy.
Have you considered doing mistletoe or a kissing bough as a decoration video?
Mistletoe is only available for a very short time. It would have to probably be faux foliage. There are more ideas than there is time, lol! I might do a kissing ball in the future but not sure if it will be this year.
@@cabincrafts2239 artificial mistletoe is safer these days and doesn't involve shooting it out of trees. 😀
@@ahammersen1323 very true!
I've always wanted to try this, but everything I read seemed to imply that you had to cover the entire orange with cloves, and that seemed expensive!
Just a little dab will do ya!
I know a white candle in the window is an Irish Christmas tradition.
That's good to know, thanks for sharing!
