Sahana Banerjee is an esteemed sitarist. Her mother Chhabi Banerjee, a famous singer, and her father Santosh Banerjee, a sitar and surbahar master, trained her in their styles while also providing her with the freedom to form her own. Sahana seeks to expand Hindustani music’s audience, organising the Swarsudha baithak series of house concerts (“my principal aim is to propagate Indian classical music among musically common people who are way from classical music”). “There are very few practising female instrumentalists today because it has been ingrained in our mindset that instrumental music requires more physical strength. We are also considered secondary to our male counterparts. It pains me to see reviews of my concerts where a certain concession is offered by the generous critic on grounds of gender. I think it is outright discrimination; not a holistic response to my music. Many great talents have been systemically wiped out because of this gender bias but still some remarkable musicians like Vidushi Jaya Biswas, Vidushi Kalyani Ray and Vidushi Sharan Rani Mathur, who held onto their turf amid great odds, have become our inspiration. Please do not teach only vocal music or dance to your girl with the single-minded agenda of improving marital prospects.” (Sahana Banerjee)
Patdeep is an afternoon raga. It draws from Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPNS and an avroh [descent] of SNDPmgRS. The vadi [king note] is Pa, and the shuddha Ni differentiates it from the similar Raag Bhimpalasi. It somewhat resembles the Carnatic Raga Gowrimanohari. I'm just beginning to fall in love with Raga Patdip. For so long, I would always gravitate to Bhimpalassi for an afternoon raga and have largely ignored this beautiful raga. Masterfully rendered here.

I've been having the same feeling for the last couple of years... this raaga is like a form of energy that slowly engulfs you.. till it's got all of you... Very nicely played. On a well tempered instrument----it sounds like a Hiren Roy sitar, is it? Sahana devi sounds like she has had some Maihar gharana taleem, am I wrong?
I wonder, is it becoming the new convention that the tanpura is dispensable from raga recitals? All manner of odd goings on in India. I suppose nothing should surprise me any more.
