- Sahana Banerjee, the young sitarist from the Rampur-Senia gharana and daughter of the great guru Pt. Santosh Kumar Banerjee was the opening artiste on Day 2 of the FEA-curated Gayatri Festival 2016.
She was accompanied by Pt. Arvind Azad on tabla.

Arguably one of the finest young sitar exponents of this generation. I have had the privilege of knowing Sahana ji personally and also her towering gurus - Pandit Santosh Banerjee and Vidushi Chabbi Banerjee. She embodies the complete, holistic Rampur sound in that she has inherited the Taleem of both the Rampur Senia and Rampur Sahaswas gharanas.
This Puriya Kalyan is one of her finest recordings available online, and I assure you, only a glimpse of her musical genius. Thanks to First Edition Arts for bringing this to listeners, and I hope you create more opportunities for us to listen to Sahana ji’s music.

The tonal quality of the sitar shines through Mrs Banerjee in this unparalleled rendition. The incredible sustained tone of her swaras brought tears to my eyes. She is the embodiment of Maa Saraswati. I never thought there was more to listen. The freshness is like a cool breeze. Meditative rendition in many ways. The sitar is literally singing. How can I say God to bless her when I believe she is certainly a goddess

Yes. Pandit Santosh Banerjee is a great exponent of dhrupad. Played surbahar in dhrupad style.
And also pt Ji means her great father plays surbahar in 'Binkar Ang' like veena. There is a video about them on UA-cam.

Alaapchari ,while playing in start base have something missing, can't explain, if you think on very ,concern on the path of pt nikhil benarjee .So suppose to be have highly think on it.Becaus my clearly views that > No One have command ,on th way which rendering of Dhruvpad - Dhmaar Style Sitar wizard except Only One name Pt Nikhil ji. Otherwise you play well. I wish U ,think on it.
For your kind information neither I am follower of Pt Nikhil Banerjee nor I am disciple of Maihar senia gharana,I am representing Rampur Senia gharana and my father Pt Santosh Banerjee is myGuru only and I am follower of my Guru .Rampur senia gharana has a different style but same root..Hope you are aware of this.
@@mallhar2007 This was good, Sahana! But there were some discontinuities.At the end you tried Pt. Nikhil Banerjee's signature jhala. This can happen only when the Raag/Raagini stand before your eyes.

Smt. Sahana Banerjee has one of the most original and identifiable voices on the Sitar. I'm sure you realize how difficult it is to create one's own signature tone and style in a field studded with numerous stars. Sahana ji strictly follows the Beenkar Dhrupad style of the Rampur Senia Gharana and it clearly shows in her recital. There is no doubt that Pt. Nikhil Banerjee was one of the guiding lights and all Indian Classical musicians, esp. Sitar players have a lot to learn from him. But I feel a comparison with is totally unwarranted here.
@@shubhrodeep.pathak Thanks for that wise comment. Every artist needs to be listened to without being compared to someone else. When we eat fantastic grapes, do we think about how they taste in comparison with a delicious banana? Sorry for the metaphor from our daily lives, but music also is a sensuous experience albeit its complexity and ineffability and its psychologically deeper effect on us.
Sahanaji is a wonderful artist with her own distinct style there can be no comparisons in classical music but regarding references of Nikhil Banerjee i had the fortune of visiting his jodhpur park house in april 1985 with shri hiren roy as a young lad of 16 i asked him foolishly panditji who is greater you or ravi shankar to which he replief very clearly that i consider ali akbar as the greatest musicians and vilayat khan as the greatest sitarist but he advised me never compare but dive deep in the melody
