One of those tunes that absolutely everybody knows. You don't have to know the artist, the song name, or even be a jazz fan to recognize this tune. I don't see this fading away anytime soon. RIP Brubeck. Your music will live on.
I just mentioned this to my brother. When I was little 50 years ago in UK this was everywhere and as a child in my mind and never forgotten. To me it's like a time travel piece of music to when I felt and have never felt again 😊😊
john nixon ,this is a priceless piece of pure magic ,im a 73 years young female who remembers the same .....utter joy ,i get cold chills every time i hear take five x
Truly, "Take 5" is a classic. This is the type of song we life vets should share with the younger people in our lives to introduce them to our music and to help them understand why we loved it, and continue to love it, so much.
Dave Brubeck was inspired to create an album based on odd time signatures during his state sponsored 1958 Eurasia trip. The track was written after the Quartet's drummer, Joe Morello, requested a song in quintuple (5 4) meter. Desmond composed the melodies on Morello's rhythms while Brubeck arranged the song. The track's name is derived from its meter. The track is written in E♭ minor and is in ternary (ABA) form. Released as a promotional single in September 1959, the track would not achieve commercial success until it became a sleeper hit in 1961. "Take Five" went on to become the biggest-selling jazz single of all time and still receives significant radio airplay. The single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1996.
This song was/is a phenomenon of jazz. The timing is insane. Yet the smoothness is addictive. I just LOVE this song. What UNIQUE talent there is in this one piece. There will NEVER be another like it. That's why I call it a phenomenon. Loved it as a young lady, love it as an older lady.... Simple the coolest of COOL !
These guys changed the history of modern music. We have all drank in their springs of anti-square rythms beats and fluent and astonishing melodies building arpegio-like harmonies. Dave flew through his keyboards in an informal piano display of musical wisdom and jazz creativity. They are all legend; they are all inmortal.
As an old saxaphonist, This has always been my favorite Dave Brubeck Song. At the age of 67, I still enjoy listening to it as I am now, while writing these comments. I seem to hear something new each time I listen, including the wonderful drum and piano playing, along with the saxaphone.
Wish my son would play this for me some day. May have to dust the old sax off to do that. How about playing this for your audience "The New Buddy Holly Band"?
As a 15 year old 'beatnik' in 1959 I purchased this LP! Its still as overwhelming today as it was then. Unless you were 'there' in the early 60's no one can explain the buzz life gave you and how the music freed you. Yes, way before its time!!!
From the beginning of our time together, Paul and I, in his Studio at 36 Causeway Street, 1956, and it was wonderful, with the guy who would spend his time with me, including marriage until now, 2016, Two children, a wonderful time together. We love it all. Went to hear this and other wonderful artists, in the Boston area, South End, what a history. Not to be forgotten. Love it, love hearing it again tonight, 4-15-16
RIP As a five or six year old I remember this song being played at various times on TV or radio and I equated it with representing the epitome of adult sophistication. Who knew the brilliant mind behind that legendary song would still be around until I turned gray. Loved the song. Sad to see he is gone.
exactly man at the end of the day music is just about how it makes you feel, whether its american jazz, techno or my personal favourite rap group from new zealand man, if its good its good. its that simple
Easily one of the best Jazz songs ever written. It's just so easy to be taken in and lose yourself in the music within the first few bars. You can feel what Brubeck felt when he wrote this... Pure masterpiece.
A ten years boy can play the piano like Brubeck in this masterpiece. He repeat, and repeat, 100 times. And Paul Desmond zig zag through. And I can hear it one million times. That's the magic of this song.
If I could have any music that played as I walked, it would be this. So smooth. Was way before my time, but I'll be damned if I don't enjoy the music my elders did.
In 1959, for my 11th birthday, my uncle gave me Time Out. He'd played Take Five for me & l-o-v-e-d it immediately! Unc started me on my lifelong love of Jazz. I'll miss you both! xxx
Yes indeed, and that drummer is the fantastic Mr. Joe Morello, and he is the only drummer that has ever been able to perform that excellent solo in the highly unusual time signature of 5/4. Most drummers lose their way just trying to insert all of the correct breaks while maintaining the rhythm. Many others have tried to duplicate that one-of-a-kind solo but Joe is the only one (that I have ever heard during my 52 years associated with the sound and recording industry) that can do it justice! Joe was.....the man!
I first heard this as an elementary school student in music class in the early 70s. Our teacher played this tune to give us an example of jazz. What a fine example it was! I can't remember the teacher's name, but I never forgot the name Dave Brubeck, and I was hooked on jazz from that moment on. Rest in peace.
What can I say but this is one of them tunes that you just love to listen to time after time. Takes me right back to the 60s. So easy on the ears 😂😉👍🙌👌. Thanks Dave Brubeck Quartet.👍😃
i was just a little kid when i heard this song it always bugged me what the name of it was i could not get it out of my head now what it is and iam a happier person for it thank you dave brubeck for it
im 24 and ive loved this song for ten years. light ur stogie and tell ur bunny to get u a gin n tonic. this is the most straightforward chillin jazz track ive come across. thank u to both my gramps for bein G enough to let me hear this. this led me to my drums
My dad was into this type of Jazz...My siblings and I listened to this on the radio while going for a Family outing...😊and Green Onions by Booker T...Sweet memories
omg... been listening to this since i was a kid on the WAVE radio station... im 18 taking a jazz class and i finally learn the name of the piece amazing
Played this in middle school, it was a great song. I still listen to it clearly, getting into jazz band has shown me a bunch of great songs that are played greatly
This song is getting me through law school. If I have heavy subject matter, I just blast this and envision the material come to life in the real world. My FAVE!
Thank you, Dave....for all the jazz music you've done to everyone of us all over the world. We sure gonna miss you. May he rest in peace with his grand piano.
I know I wasn't in high school yet when this came out. I was hooked on it from the moment I heard it. A classmate, from the class of 1964, just said he was listening to it while cooking. So, here I am, listening to it myself as are other classmates who saw his post. Loving it.
i heard it on accuradio first just now.....and fell for it. So here I am. Thanks to youtube ......and yes , I am simply in awe of Paul Desmond and The Dave Brubeck Quartet.....
"Take Five" was the album that got me interested in collecting records, and the one that first got me started on jazz music. Thank you, Mr. Brubeck, for the legacy you left behind! You will not be forgotten!
This is so far ahead of it's time. Dave was an icon, an inspiration to me, and I wish him well jamming in Heaven with the best band ever imaginable. Rest in Peace.
Indémodable, entrainante, cette mélodie me fais toujours autant vibrer. Et je l'écoute depuis plus de 15 ans. Je crois que ce n'est pas fini! Elle est toujours là, je reviens vers elle, que je sois triste, joyeuse ou simplement rêveuse...
For a very long time I've looked for this song. Couldn't even begin to tell you the excitement I felt when I finally shazzamed it in a kroger a few days ago thank you very much for helping me add another song to my music collection
Jazz doesn't get much cooler than this: just a drummer who specialized in odd time signatures, the bandleader at the piano, and a saxophonist with nothing to prove.
HOW does the drummer keep this unusual timing. I can't even follow it in my mind, though I love it. What an unusual song. Beautiful jazz - it won't happen again. This was a one-time song - so addictive. A never-get-tired- of-it song......
i was like 3 the first time i heard this song and always loved it. It played on an episode of Supernatural an I just had to hear again. Music it truly universal
Before my time, I was born in '59, but this is the coolest piece of music ever, played it loud, at 5:30 on morning while waiting to go into work, wow...
My first year in high school, my home room teacher, an art teacher, played this record everyday. It became a part of me, and reminds me of those days everytime I hear it.
In my opinion the most iconic jazz song ever
Paul Verlain that and "Sing Sing Sing" by Benny Goodman
Iconic tune
In the top 10

4 amazing men together at the right time in history to complete a classic piece of music.

Bruh do write that much

I was ten when I first listened to this......and that was the beginning of my love for jazz.
This is Paul Desmond's masterpiece. That tone is so elegant.
Nucleus Medical Media You nailed it...Very elegant! Kind of a "cool elegance" like Grace Kelly.
well said
Nucleus Medical Media: I agree 100% Way before its time. It's simply brilliant.
Tia Mia ī
Elegant and refined. Especially his top-end.
The best of Dave Brubeck
I saw no one else had done lyrics for this video, so I listened to it several times to get them.

One of the best jazz compositions ever. I've always loved the syncopation of the drums whilst the piano is keeping the beat in the middle section!
Man, Desmond plays with such a full sound, that saxophone is like cream and fortified wine coming out of the speakers.
my mom sat me down at age 4 to listen to this live album..its stayed with me since
I'm only 21 and I listen to rap music but I had to download this when I heard it. Great relaxing song.
there's a lot of great old music out there. explore it young man.
