Everyone likes to meme about the lick since it's so prominent in this piece specifically, but this is probably my favourite ever use of it. Brubeck really brings out the best of the phrase through all the variations, he makes it seem almost touching and symbolic of something much greater. A fantastic example of how to use a recurring motif in jazz. Utter genius.

Great example of how it’s not the lock that’s the problem it’s how you play it.

@@stangetz534 Hard to say.. Most attribute it to Stravinsky, because he is the earliest recordings of it publicly.. But it likely came from Classical origins that rubbed off into the Jazz and bebop playing of the 20's and 30's and became instrumental in bebop jazz language from then on..

Lick body what? That is the seed of the melody and the theme used for developing, that is present in every good piece of music, from any music ever written, to the Beethoven 5th Symphony, any other symphony, any concerto, to Brubeck's 40 days.
Only music ignoramuses use the word "lick", when there was already a better one used centuries before the idiots who use word "lick"were born.

This is absolutely stunning music but these days others do wonderous things like these boys teaching a new generation about jazz by using video games music as their 'standards'. A taste: ua-cam.com/video/qEoBMvJLrsU/v-deo.html compared to the original ua-cam.com/video/QDLG1bosqtg/v-deo.html

Bravo pour ce faux concert et merci aux Stranglers. Dave Brubeck joue e réalité Take Five dans cette vidéo. Le son de Golden Brown a été ajouté en 2020. Belle version quand même !

Good piece. I don't give a tinker's damn about the Stranglers. They did a good version of Golden Brown. Other than that, their music sucks!
