Honestly the Slipp era feels like a good name, because while its far from the only big innovation, its definitely the biggest one and its key to streaming, online tournaments, etc; Technolgy era could work but sounds a bit vague, but honestly that might be a good thing
Especially with us calling everyone new “slippi kids” it just kinda fits well
Slippi Era really makes the most sense
You're always so well spoken man. I love diving into stuff like this that happens in the community and conceptualizing what it means. Thanks for a great video
Hey just want to say, as a fellow chronic fatiguer, you are looking STRONG! Really happy for you.
Ah yes. The industrial revolution of melee
I hear "Rollback Era" a lot, which doesn't totally describe everything that's happening in the game, but describes perhaps the biggest shift in Melee's history: the game is now more accessible than ever, thanks to rollback netplay allowing anyone to practice & grind the game.
Yeah I saw a lot of references to this, so I think this is another good name for the way the majority of players experience the game. I don't think I'd want to call every era by how most people interact with it/what's largest though. I wouldn't want to replace "golden age" with "mlg age" for example, just doesn't sound as good.
It has been my dream for a long time to become a game designer and make a platform fighter even better than Melee. To give the community the upgrades I always wanted. But now that I'm finally closing in on the dream people have started upgrading Melee with mods. On one hand, I want the Melee community to go on forever, but on the other hand, it is now in direct competition with the game I'm working towards. It's a very bittersweet feeling. =/
If Rivals of Aether can do it, so can you.
I would say you should embrace the fact that your game isn't a mod of Melee, but its own game! Definitely use Melee as inspiration, but also lean into your own ideas and vision and the ways it's different from Melee
only three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and clutchbox
It's The sweaty age. Your average slippi spacie will combo you like armada, move like prime westballz, sdi like wizzy but they'll approach you like they just went 0-2 in bracket.
Because we go 0-2 in bracket 😭
average slippi spacie I play does none of that except the going 0-2 part
The Diamond Age: Slippi Rollback Netplay, Mods, & Smash World Tour
The content area could also be a name for it, since its now such a central part of how melee is percieved.
Overall I really love a lot of the new parts of the era, it feels like progress is really speeding up in a way that pushes new players foreward and gets us to see new faces for old classics (just compare the way SFAT plays now to how he did in 2016)
The new era, whatever it is, starts with Genesis
I love this question. I played melee as a kid/teen when it came out, and then again in college, and now I have slippi and don't even play that often, but I find myself thinking, _"This isn't 20XX anymore"_
I think this era should be the Online Renaissance
Your ability to articulate such knowledge about the history and culture of melee is amazing, always love hearing you share thoughts like these PP
Great video. Just one note, anther’s ladder implemented a ranking system many years before Slippi. Obviously it’s not the same situation and there are many differences between anther’s ladder and Slippi, but just wanted to put that out there.
i basically grew up on anthers ladder lmao its crazy to me that people forget about that site now
Yeah that's a good point! I guess I would say that it seems like more people are adopting it more now. It's kinda like how beginnings of eras start in another, anthers paving the way for modern ranked perhaps.
Hi! I just came from Bronol's video and I see that you are doing better in relation to your illness (of course I have no bad intentions by meddling in this) also know that your way of playing is : Just wow!
Woooo ppmd video thanks man ive been waiting
You and Toph should do a talk about this on Radio Melee or something! Maybe bring Scar in too, he loves defining eras and storylines
unedited ppmd has to be one of my favorite ppmdees
God I love PP so much, so well spoken and intelligent 👏 I think the new era will defined by Mang0 semi-retiring after Summit, followed by PP resurfacing which causes Mang0 to unretire, that's the dream anyway. Who knows maybe we get a return of the gods era, were Pp, Armada and m2k return
it's transforming, it's evolving, it's packed tightly with fervent zeal for improvement and new faces looking to prove themselves, just needing a catalyst to set melee ablaze once more. i think that time will lead to it forever being referred to as the pandemic era/slippi era, and then something corny like the rebirth or resurgence :p
I don’t know if you’ll ever watched it, but there was a really great yt documentary on HBox by a guy called EmporerLemon called “There will never ever be another player like HungryBox” there’s even a recording of a rather sour Armada reacting to it.
But yeah calling it the Clutchbox era is completely apt as he was the main character of Melee
What makes HBox even more impressive was that he was working a full time engineering job while competing at the highest level.
The Era of the Clutch Box was a time to be smash fan
U still da GOAT dawg. Big fan since like 2013, much love bro.
I'd like to give my amateur opinion on this, and it may just a a different wording but I'd call it the age of the non-gods, or the gap-closing age. For the longest time as a spectator, it felt like the "gods" were in a different tier, and even the bottom tier of the top 10 weren't considered at the same level. Fox was considered the best. Even though characters like Falco, Falcon and Sheik were quite good, there were barely any representatives that anyone think could make top 8, let alone win.
All of a sudden a wave of Falcon players start beating top level players, getting 1st place, and the same happened with falco. All of a sudden we see these characters that never pushed through suddenly become very close to top level and we see a new meta opening up. Brackets that used to just be full of foxes and the gods now started seeing more character diversity, and most recently we saw a Sheik player storm through a bracket into 2nd place with a level of dominance not really seen in sheik before. Plup kind of hung around but would dual main, and never quite punched through in the same way. And of course AMSA is continuing to push the meta with yoshi and show that he is a strong top competitor on a hero almost no one can master on the same level.
I like to call it the diversity era there is more diversity with characters in the top 10 like every high tier has a rep that is top ten (Yes I consider polish top 10) like for example
Fox:Ibdw
Falco:Mang0
Falcon:wizzy
Sheik: plus
Peach:polish
Puff:Hbox
Marth:zain
@Sephion plup but it autocorrected to plus
@Sephion plus is the fastest shiek in the scene.
Lol Polish over The doctor himself???

Personally, Clitchbox Era and Platinum Era are one era, but y'know, semantics.
always gotta bring up Waluigi when possible, love PP
WAH
18:16 yeah that's true bc I am very young (start in 2021 at 12yo) and playing online is definitely better for my parents and my online friends' parents !
btw I did go to a european major (HFLAN) but it's beacause my parents are very comprehensive and it was a bit stressful for them :)
yooooooo teen smashers unite! (also 13 lol)

I wonder if the wobbling ban should be mentioned when it comes to eras?
Wobbling got banned in a couple eras, but maybe there is some connection? Brawl days we banned it and during the technology age we banned it but I'd imagine during Brawl it wasn't driven by spectators....
@@PPMD1 well yeah, I guess you can say that Axe pushed the wobbling ban using social media (a technology), and player clout which is characteristic of this era of melee. Though of course there were other factors and I don’t know how that compares to banning wobbling during Smash Boards/Facebook era. of melee social media. The dip in Ice Climbers players these days is pretty notable though.
Edit: I wonder if top IC’s will be able to push their meta post wobbling ban enough to see them rebound back to pre wobbling ban with advances in hand offs and other tech IC’s have/will have when they are further practiced and discovered.
@@sinfinite7516 ICs will probably never bounce back to pre wobbling levels

the dystopian era
Nice talk Dr Pee Pee
are we ever getting part 2 of that marth guide?
The era where all the top players no longer enjoy the game and instead of quitting the pretend to still like it and spread the negativity toward the game to their audiences.
I think you should call it the online era until genesis 8 then the era should shift to the melee renaissance
I'm really surprised rivals of aether didn't pick up steam. If the whole community moved to a new melee like i would as well. Nintendo is a huge roadblock
Why do I feel like you're secretly labbing and leveling up?
Idk how you couldn't call it the net play era- every day, who knows how many people are getting high quality practice with everybody else, the skill ceiling and floor are rising rapidly, and online tourneys mean that anyone with a PC can compete in melee tourneys, it'd still pretty nutty
Good points about Nintendo, there's a possibility that this will be retrospectively scene as the "pre-giga-f-nintendo" for some legal shenanigans they pull, but that would be depressing.
"who knows how many people" that's the problem, we don't actually know how many. if that number drops too low we go from netplay era to notplay era
