    Always a treat to find a new Owings Art video in my queue! And what a palette of topics you've covered! First, those paints are beautiful. The tin, alone, is terrific! Loved the comparisons and for me, only wish there was another convenient darker green, but easy enough to mix. Second, Joshua's work is superb! It's very kind of you to showcase him and his work and I look forward to checking it out more closely. Lastly, I might have to break my "no new paint sets until after the holidays" commitment for the new Schmincke set! I'll have a looksee and if it's in my taste range, well, it may be "BOOM," buy it up! Thank you for such a great range of conversation points! Wonderful video and grateful to catch it today! Stay well, my friend! :)

      Greetings Mark - Thanks for the kindness my friend. Yep, I just pre-ordered two sets of the Schmincke. One will be a gift. :-) It's too good a deal to pass up in my opinion, especially as a huge Schmincke fan. Thanks for checking out Josh, he's a great guy and a really great Artist. Take care Mark and I'll be over to check out your latest video. ~Marty

    I really enjoy using these watercolors. They have a bunch of drawbacks, from containing loads of fugitive pigments, not being all that great at layering, having a weird texture & having only a few single pigment colors, but nonethelss I really enjoy using them. They are very fun and vibrant, and if you are not planning on selling or gifting originals, who cares about lightfastness? I would not want these watercolors as my only set of paints, but I defnitely love being able to use them when I feel like it.
    For a long time I wanted to know where these paints come from, as they are distributed by Honsell under the tradename Jaxon, but Honsell does not make any products, they distribute only. They havem for example, long distributed White Nights in Germany.
    After much research and checking out what people online had to say about them, I figured out that these are actually Munyo paints, 99.9%certainty. I say 99.9% since nobody from Honsell or mungyo confirmed this to me, but I have the following clues: The texture of the paints is the same, the color selection is the same, the pigments used are the same, the available sets come in the exact same arrangements. And then there was thie additional clue of the weird ultramarine blue: The ultramarine in the Jaxon paints is a mix of PB29 and PB 27, while the Cobalt blue is a pure PB 29. This is so unique that it is a good give-away. So, in all likelihood, these are Mungyo watercolors from Korea. Thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is as curious as I was.

      Wow that's great information and good detective work. Thank you for sharing all of this. This makes sense, I suppose, but honestly I have not tried the Mungyo paints so I have no experience. Thanks for posting this and really appreciate the research you did. Outstanding.

    i like this little rainbow palette very much, but i was still missing something, because i couldn't achieve certain colors because of the pigment composition, for example with the ultramarine.
    I don't know why the important redish ultramarine blue isn´t clean (PB 29 / PB 27) and contains something Prussian blue and the sidly greenish Prussian blue is pure one pigment PB27.

    I must practice to handle useful the two-pigment blue. ALL colors works fine and I learn a lot about the pigments with this tiny awesome palette.
    i have expanded my tiny palette a little with cyan, lemon yellow and cold pink (like magenta) in order to be able to mix the entire color circle with these brilliant colors.
    now i have a lot of fun with my limited palette filled with gorgeous colors.
    all together work perfect for me :)

    Hi Marty, those look like nice paints. I have used the Grumbacher Academie paints and was not impressed with them. I have three of the American Journey paints; but, most of my watercolors are from Daniel Smith. I've signed up for the limited edition Schminke paints.
    One thing about German made products, they are usually good or very good quality. My first car was a Buick Opel. It was a German made care. Whatever paint was applied was very durable and held up well to the harsh weather we had in Ohio.

      Hi there Donna - Thanks for the note. Yes they are now accepting pre-orders at Wet Paint. :-) I love the quality of the German products, especially art supplies. Hope you get a chance to grab a Schmincke set and I agree about the Grumbacher. Have an awesome day Donna. ~Marty

    Never heard of these paints before, thanks Ania for finding them and Marty for reviewing them!!!
    I agree with eve-the texture of the dried paint, the price, the generic tin, the lack of pigment information....reminds me a lot of the Prima Marketing watercolors, specifically the "classics" set.
    Love your artist feature-this is something I wish I'd grown up with because spreading the art love helps to inspire and encourage all of us! In an emotional but not technical way, Josh reminds me of NC Wyeth. They both very clearly love/d the places they surrounded themselves with.
    Yay, more schmincke! I keep wanting to give schmincke another go, since I didn't like them the first time I tried them....felt like the color shift was just way too drastic and frustrating. I'm ready for another try!

    Hi Marty, great review. An art supplies shop, here in Paris, carries the Jaxon wc paints. I have lemon yellow and sap green. I didn't use yet as I have too many paints 😅 but they do look pretty good. I'll definitely try them out. Thank you :)

      Hi Eve - They are pretty sweet paints and I think just no too easy to get them in N. America. I asked Wet Paint if they were interested in being a distributor, but no word on that yet. :-)

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I just thought the exact same thing and wrote out my comment saying that but figured I should wait till at least I watched the whole thing but I agree the texture of the paint I. The pans looks identical to prima watercolors and they are wrapped from what I remember the same. Same Tin too

    • @UTleochi
      @UTleochi 6 років тому +3

      They do have pigment information on the wrappers of their full pans - I've got their 24 full pan set - 11 colours are one-pigment colours, 6 are two-pigment colours and the rest are mixes of at least 3 pigments. No idea how they compare to the Prima Marketing paints, as I have never tried the latter. I quite like the Jaxon watercolours because of their strong and happy hue. Some of them have a tendency to get a bit shiny/blotchy when dried. My guess is that they contain quite a lot of gum arabic. I would recommend them for people on a budget because they're very good value for money, at least in the EU/German speaking countries.

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 4 роки тому +1

      They have pigment info on the half pans, too. It´s just very difficult to find pigment info online. But there is a video here where someone is listing the pigments of the 24 set. ua-cam.com/video/33Ui7BysRfM/v-deo.html

    Hi Marty! I've never heard of this brand, so this is great. I wonder why most sets include white and black though. For most watercolorists, it's two wasted pans. If I want a touch of white, I'll use gouache. If I need black, I'll mix it or probably use ink. But the colors are very vibrant.

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  6 років тому +1

      Hi Lori - I think a lot of watercolorists would agree with you. I use white a lot in my portrait work and black to make paynes gray. :-)

    • @lorijones9579
      @lorijones9579 6 років тому +1

      Ah, I've never done a portrait other than as a pencil drawing. White watercolor paint always swatches so weakly, but maybe I should give it a chance for subtle color adjustments. I have at least 3 white half pans from sets that I've never used. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Thanks Marty, that was interesting. It thickens the plot a bit, on account of the own-brand range from Jackson's Art Supplies here in the UK. A coincidence, probably, as it's widely believed (with good reason) that the latter are made by Sennelier. Judging by what I see on the screen, these Jaxon colours don't have that subtle vibe to them - they look pretty decent though especially at the price point. Also thanks for the introduction to Josh Cunningham's work - that chap certainly paints a mean silo. :-)

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  6 років тому

      Ahhh, I never knew about the Jackson and Senellier connection. Here in the states, we have American Journey, which is made by DaVinci in California. Probably a similar arrangement. These were a great value and love the bright colors and dispersion. LOL, I will pass on your compliment to Josh. :-) Thanks for dropping by Gen.

    Hello Marty! Essie from West Texas! So good to see a review by you, we miss seeing you. Went on line and signed up with Wet Paint. Interesting about the Jaxon paints, they have the same granular look before wetting that the Jane Davenport paints do. We were trying to figure out who makes her paints and Jaxon/Honsell is a good possibility. Her paints are vibrant too. Also thanks for the review, even if his paintings are not in the budget, we can still enjoy his work and spread the word for him. Hope to see you more often. Essie/luv4art33. PS I have the White Knights and I love them, they are very creamy and easy to rewet.

      Howdy Essie - Sorry it's been so long between videos. Summer is an incredibly busy time at home and at work, so I only have a few precious minutes a day to myself and I spend most of that drawing and painting. :-) Thanks for supporting the channel and always being so kind. Yes, Josh is a wonderful painter and I can't afford his work now either....lol. Did West Texas survive Harvey? How bout the clean up efforts down there? I hear only some spots got it really bad, but that flooding was widespread.
      Hope you are well Essie. ~Marty

      Owings Art We are very thankful here. Hot and dry here/normal for West Texas. I keep thinking about this review and that the White Russian paint is made in Germany. There is something funny about that. Okay... just ordered the limited addition set. Thanks for letting us know. They know that you told us...hohoho. I also ordered some of that paper Steve reviewed, I figured wet paint would have some. My husband always laughs when I say its Marty's fault. He is a good guy and really doesn't care.

    Great video Marty! 😁 I signed up for the new palette. There are 2 colors I'm not interested really in, the potter's pink & viridian, but the other 16 colors would be awesome. 😃 Josh does a beautiful job, thanks for sharing. I couldn't image doing plein air oils in the winter. He must have an extremely warm set up...lol 😆 Jason & I have now done 4 of our plein air dates. We talked about doing it in the winter to, but it going to have to be from inside the coffee house. 😉 I hope you are doing well my friend. 🤗 Fall is upon us! 🍂🍁

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  6 років тому +1

      Hi Val - Do you get fall colors up in Flag or it is mostly pines? I don't recall because it's been a long time.
      Thanks for the note and I want to hear more about the plain air dates. :-)

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 6 років тому

      Owings Art we have a gorgeous fall!! They call us the southwest new England for fall. Of course we have our ponderous pines, spruce & other pines; but we also have aspens, oak, maples, elm type, and others I have no idea but they are beautiful. In about 2 weeks (if that long) the "leafers" will be here crowding up everything on the weekends for about a month...lol 😆 We are extremely lucky up here we get all 4 full seasons. Phoenix gets hot as hell & not so hot seasons.
      As for plein air dates we leave around 9am on Sundays to either the coffee shop around the corner that has big outdoor seating or up on the mountain at that restaurant. We have breakfast & then break out the art supplies. 😃 I made a 24 wc set just for our Sundays, which is mainly DS, Qor, & M.Grahams...1 Sennelier & 1 miss gold. We are also going to go to Bearizona & Oak Creek. We don't talk the whole time because we get focused, but no politics or negative issues may be discussed. 😆 I tend to paint what I see & Jason has been painting ideas he has for his regular paintings. He never used wc until now, he is playing with them. 😃

      I just saw this comment and became curious. I called Gerstaecker in Germany and asked them. Even they do not know where these paints are made. I do find this a little unsettling, and I frankly hate German product laws that make it ok to not tell people where stuff is made as long as the distributor is mentioned. I´m gonna keep up with this one, I want to know this. Thank you for giving me something to do.
