I'm so glad that many of you enjoy the video.
Some answers for your questions: Roy and Moss are brothers from the same litter, they are almost 4 years old. We named them after the IT Crowd characters. They are both smart in their own way. Moss (on the left) is good at solving puzzles as he is very food motivated. On the other hand, he can't figure out how to properly cover his poop. 😄 Also only Roy's able to open doors, drawers or cabinets. They are playful but gentle cats. I think they are not aware of their strength otherwise they would have destroyed the puzzle toy for the treats. Sometimes they have disagreements but never on the food, they share their food without any problems.

My cat can open doors. Even properly closed ones, but especially when they are just ajar. It takes her literally SECONDS to stick her little paw in between and pull it open.
Do you think she does, though? Nope. Every single time she sits down in front of the door, turns around and stares at me like, "Can't you see I want to go out? Get up already and open it for me!" After about 30 seconds she starts meowing loudly, and if I still don't get up by the minute mark, she does eventually open it herself, while loudly proclaiming what a failure of a servant I am 😂

Years ago, I moved into a nice house, rent free. The owner of the house, a friend of my parents, had lost his wife and moved with their small child to another state but couldn’t bring himself to sell the house. I was young and single, had one dog and a demanding job. In exchange for no rent, my job was to pay the utilities and maintain the property (three acres and a pool) and help get the house ready to put on the market. The first time I walked into the house, my mother and a neighbor were doing dishes and generally tidying up. As I walked into the kitchen, I ran smack into a giant fluffy cat who failed to yield to me or my dog. Now, I was definitely not a “cat person”. I had never lived with an indoor cat. I hated litter boxes and had zero minus infinity interest in cleaning up after a cat. I immediately protested with, “whoa whoa whoa, no one said anything about a CAT!” to which my mother quickly replied, “well maybe someone else would like to live here rent free and take care of the cat!” I grumbled and conceded. As soon as I moved in the next day and was alone with the “creature”, we had a conversation…He told me he would like to go in and out at will and that he wanted to eat wet cat food at every meal and to sleep in the same bed with me. I told him, “I am not your servant. However, if you will pee and poop outdoors, I will let you in and out whenever you ask and give you wet food every day and you can sleep in my room as long as you don’t get near my face. Deal?” It was a Deal.
We lived relatively harmoniously. He teased my dog relentlessly, provoking wild chases down a long hallway that would end with my dog run ragged, he cuddled constantly which irritated me, he opened cabinets, turned on faucets to drink fresh water, and only pooped in the litter box once in the two years I lived there.
One day I came home and he was limping severely. I contacted the owner and he told me where to take him to the vet and he would pay the bill. The vet was surprised to see him. The tech told me that this was a “fancy” cat that the wife had bought specifically because he was a Norwegian Forest Cat mixed with a Mainecoon because she adored both breeds. I didn’t really care what kind of cat he was as long as he didn’t cause me more work. Around the same time, I met my now wife. The first time she came to my place she stood with her mouth gaped open when she saw the cat. “Omg, what a gorgeous cat! You didn’t tell me you had a cat!” I said, “he’s not my cat, we just live together.” “You don’t like him?” “He’s alright, we have some agreements, but I can’t stand him trying to claw me all the time.” “Wow, he tries to claw you? Is he aggressive?” “Um, not really, he just does this thing (I demonstrate bread kneading) and digs his claws into me, I hate it so I kick him off my lap all the time.” She paused for a long time and looked at me like I was completely stupid before saying, “have you tried trimming his claws?” I thought about my response for an awkward amount of time and said, “um, no. I didn’t know you could do that.” The next day my new girlfriend, who at this point was actively thinking “this relationship is NOT going to work out”, showed up at my house with cat claw clippers. She sat down on the couch, the cat jumped up and sat down next to her, she petted him all over and then grabbed a paw. He calmly and happily let her give him a full kitty manicure. I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be married if it weren’t for that cat. She pretty much stayed because she couldn’t stand the thought of leaving him!
We ended up with that cat moving with us to a new house, then across country and then another move. I grew to LOVE him so much that I cried for weeks when he died of cancer. He was the smartest, gentlest, nicest cat I’ve ever met and I’m so happy I had a full cat lifetime of memories with him.

Part of the reason why the cat on the right seemed not to participate in the successful solution was that at first he did manage to get out a treat with his paw. On the other hand, the cat who has pulled out the tray once, could observe the connection between his action and its result, therefore it was much more likely that the same cat will also pull out 2 remaining trays. After Moss pulled out his first tray it seemed as though he remembered that Roy had already scooped out one treat and eaten it and so was one up on Moss.
Then Roy had another so Moss scoffed two of the fallen treats at once to level up, then let Roy have one ....that's two each ....then the last two were divvied up between them...3 each, FAIR!
Then Moss apparently was satisfied to let the rest go to Roy. Maybe just brainstorming a successful solution to accessing the treats was enough. You never know what these unfathomable humans are going to pull on you next. Best to keep one paw ahead for the sake of the good old, natural, cat survival skills.

I was waiting for them to just knock over the container. Which is how my cats often solve problems....
But they do learn from each other. Once I taught two sisters how to use the cat door, I didn’t need to teach the next generation unless there was no experienced cat in the house when they arrived. One of the original sisters demonstrated it for her adopted kitten, and that kitten grew up to illustrate the technique to other cats. One cat who as at least 12 years old on arrival needed special tutoring, though.... The rest learned from watching an experienced cat. That’s true for a lot of things.

@@kaikart123 There are certainly considerable differences between individual cats. My mother had a pedigree Burmese who could figure out problems, using both trial and error and obviously reasoning out a course of action. Friends of mine had a little black cat who was incredibly smart and a big lovely shaggy Maine Coon type who was really dumb. He couldn't figure anything out for himself such as how to play with a new toy; he just copied what the other cat did. I had a pair of sisters, litter mates (not pedigree) who differed in both personality and effective intelligence. One was laid back and just went straight for what she wanted, no fuss. The other made a big todo about everything and tended to lose out to her sister. She was so busy emoting that she didn't understand the benefits of focus. I believe both Siamese and Burmese (that breed has part-Siamese ancestry) are smart, and Abyssinians are very smart. Ordinary domestic house cats can be either. Not sure if some of the new breeds are bred for smarts or just for looks. Cats haven't been bred for specific tasks that take the sort of intelligence useful to their human owners the way dogs such as terriers and collies have been.

Aw I love this! I had a black Norwegian Forest Cat who was “dumb but beautiful.” A very very sweet boy who loved being brushed and got along well with the cats and dog. But I can’t tell you how many times he’d sit at the hinge side of the door waiting for it to open. My dog just hit 18 and she now waits at the hinge side and gets confused why we can’t walk past a stop sign with it between us. But she is still sweet and very happy.

Reminds me of an experiment with crows some time back.
They had male and female crows together to fish grubs out of a tree branch and gave them wire as crows have been known to fashion tools.
The male crows stood back while the females fashioned hooks to poke into the holes and catch grubs. The males then stole the female's hooks and used them for themselves.

IMO exploiting off someone else's positive result is about being less concerned with concepts like "fair play" or "morally right thing to do". So it's more about egoistic desires or self's favors.
