Great channel Mark, just found you and shared this video. I've tried to vlog on my real shoots and I'm usually too busy and stressed out. So I appreciate you doing this kind of commentary so people know what it's really like in the field.
I'm not much of a fan of vlogs/vloggers in general, but your channel is fantastic. You're not obsessed with gear, your tips are genuinely insightful and the images you produce are gorgeous. Congrats on the 10k, I'm convinced you'll have many more in no time at all.
hey I am from sri lanka thanx for the help victims of the Easter bombing and video. And sorry for the the Inconvenience. I would like to say my country is very beautiful and great country thar has many place to travel, anyway these people have no knowledge about politics so always my country poor and bed place 😔😔anyway travel after the economic crises in my country
As a starting documentary maker your videos are priceless. They are just different somehow. Dont even know how to explain it. Only youtuber that i cant wait to see the next one. Thanks and keep it up! ✌️
I really love those vlogs where you simply talk about your process while you’re working. So much insight there. I know they don’t get watched as much as a video with a sexy "10 SUPER CINEMATIC TIPS FOR CINEMATIC FOOTAGE (CINEMATIC AF)" title, but please know that your subscribers definitely love them.
Real world tips from real world practioner. Your work really inspires me to hone and improve my storytelling skills. I post some of my stories in my UA-cam channel. I look forward to shooting my docu film in the future. Awesome!
@@markbone I think your tower shot at 7:12 is just as good as any sunrise. There are so many sunrise shots out there with all the travel reels these days, but shots like that have a uniqueness about them that sets them apart.
I know this video was about the film regarding Sri Lanka. But the way you mixed up your B roll and talking head piece is actually the type travel video I want to do. It wasn't so much about you but about the story you were sharing. Most travel vlogs are 90% the person and 10% the country they're in
Great content! Always excited when you post a new video. Would love to see a walkthrough of your color correction and grading some time. The grade on those city shots is so nice!
Great video and behinds the scenes look at your film man! I'm aspiring to make more meaningful and influential films myself so watching your videos has been a big influence. I just started a new role as the Senior Content Producer for A3 Productions which is a film production company funded by AAA. Im super excited to get started on my first project with them but even more excited for some of the longterm projects that will include some doc work!!!!!! Keep the great contnet coming man!
Hey there, awesome content! Just wondering what your settings are in your drone, looks really different from other channels - or is it all in the grade/post?
Awesome video Mark! All your content is really informative and entertaining, and a great balance of both. Much appreciated 🙏. Quick question: For travel doc shoots like this what lenses do you bring with you? And which (if any) do you find yourself using the most?
@@markbone Gotcha, thanks! That's a solid set, interested in trying those sigma primes soon. Also just saw Part 1 to this series so saw the kit after all haha. Love that you bring along that vintage glass too! 🤘
Hey Mark great video! What’s the bag on your waist when you shoot? I have a ThinkTank on speed belt but yours looks different and want to know more about it. Thanks
Bro this is amazing as usual. Currently in Sri Lanka and was quite tired of shooting but you gave this inspiration. Love you man. Btw which drone do you use?
When you shot your Sri Lanka documentary, did you shoot internally into the camera or externally to a recorder? I'm shooting my first documentary in April and I am wondering what kind of workflow to use.
When traveling around how much more are you using the a7iii vs the FS7? All your content is on point. Your color is great too! I’m just wondering if most the doc is shot on the FS7 or the a73. Thanks!
I only use the A73 for vlogging and gimbal shots otherwise it’s all Fs7. For my documentaries I never want to sacrifice the quality of the image, I’m even thinking of selling my Fs7 for a RED or Alexa because I just love nice images for my films!
Hello, Namaste from India, Love to watch your content, your amazing, keep inspiring and you're an awesome teacher that helped me improve my filmmaking skills. thankyou soo much, hope to meet you one day stay safe, stay healthy, and keep uploading stuff.
I love your content mark. I just found through a friend an old guy who makes pottery in cologne where I live. I just came up with the idea of shooting the whole process of pottery making and maybe trying to find a way to show it differently, with humour or a side story. But to be honest I am a little bit lost, as I do not want to make a typical film on how we make a pot. Any tips on that, Mark?
Humour can help make it more entertaining. Just keep asking what is your story? Why should I care about your character? The fact he's good at pottery isn't enough. Talk with him more and find out interesting stuff about his life and maybe why he started
@@markbone Thanks a lot for yor tips, Mark. I am more of a fiction storyteller. The inital idea was basically how to create pottery from start to finish. But it is true that I don't want it to be generic.
@@markbone makes a lot of sense. I still imagine it beeing difficult, also in a sense of: What does that do with you (as a person comprehending all these stories) ...
Mark, loving your work. Mesmerizing slo mo moments! Q: Are you making this film based on your idea, or do you have a client lined up who is paying for all this? Also how tricky is it to grab drone shots in other countries?
William Rose it’s always a mix. The client approaches you but I try and sway them one way or another if their idea needs improvement. They’re always the one paying unless it’s a personal project. And with drone shots... depends the size of the project. Ask for forgiveness not permission is often how it goes with doc work
@@markbone Forgiveness not permission? Be careful. I've seen photographers chased down and beaten. In the U.S. you could be sued if you take video/photograph someone without their permission in a non-public area. Laws are very different around the world. Some countries ban drones. In the U.S. you have to have license. I'd suggest that people learn non-obtrusive methods of photographing someone if you need the footage and aren't sure. But still be careful.
Have you ever had a situation where someone was trying to take your gear? When I was in St. Petersburg Russia shooting for a non-profit I had three huge Russian dudes sandwich me in a doorway and try to steal all my gear. I yelled, twisted, smacked them away from me and they ran off but man I did NOT enjoy that and it has made me very wary to travel again with my gear.
Serious question. Everything you shoot outside is very very dark. I am assuming it's because you're using ND filters (or is it a style choice?). If it's the former, at what point do you allow the shutter speed to change and at least have daytime make an appearance now and again? Clearly, there is a way to get around this? Presumably, change the aperture?
What’s your favourite run/gun lens??
I've been enjoying the 18-105 on sony A6500 lately!
I shot a documentary mini series for television almost entirely with a canon 24-105 f4. Incredibly versatile lens.
24-105 f4 with speed booster making it a f2.8
Ya you can't beat the 24-105 with IS
Hey Mark, would love to know your thoughts on cinema lens vs dslr lens, pros and cons, I know you shoot with both.

"Let your shots breath" Thank you so much for this. I need to be reminded of this every time I go out and film.
Here is a kind reminder again. ;)
"Pretty disappointing droning"
What???? Those drone shots were epic!!!
Benjamin Ferguson 😬 no magic hour

I agree Benjamin. He's so precise that the shots don't work for him but I would be bragging to everyone about my watertower shot.

Ya most vlogs feel like personal diaries haha!
It's great what you're doing here, I would find it really difficult to film those interviews with those young bombing victims. Kudos to you.
This is dope stuff man. The Sri Lanka project looks like it's going to be amazing. Really inspiring content each time you post a video, learning alot!
Thank you so much for your content! Love the storytelling focus, it's incredibly helpful!
Great video man. I was dying with those horns downstairs.
I think I tend to rush my shots. Atleast on the last project I worked on.
Great content! Always excited when you post a new video. Would love to see a walkthrough of your color correction and grading some time. The grade on those city shots is so nice!
I'm filming my own documentary for school this upcoming semester so these videos are super helpful! Thanks for the tips!

Matteo Carozzi that’s all post!! I’ve been thinking about putting together a LUT package. Interested??
Thank you for all the tips. Very inspiring.
You’re most welcome :)
+Mark Bone, Have you made a drone-flying tutorial? I don't know the first thing about flying one. Thanks.
How do you colorise your footage so cinematic? Can you do a video?
Yeah, I've been counting to 30 seconds regardless of if the shot is supposed to be finished.

Giordi Serafini I used to shoot almost exclusively on the 24-70 when I started out but now it’s almost only 24mm sigma and sometimes the 50mm

How do you back up your footage in the field? I'm planning a doc in Russia for one month and was wondering how you do it?
Killian Bayer back up to two separate USB 3.0 drives
Which music plan do you have? Business, individual, or custom?
#HealLanka, thanks for sharing Mark! See you in your next YT vid~ Have a great week ahead.

You meet them without a camera first. Build a human relationship before you ever build a filmmaking one.

Hi Mark ! In which picture profil do you film your documentary ?
Antoine SOREL on my Fs7 slog 2 but for vlogging I just use the flat profile on my A7iii
@@markbone Thx ! But the flat on A7iii is also Slog2. Is for you, this profil good for low light also ?
Antoine SOREL I only shoot Slog 2 when I’m trying to match the Fs7 and I have decent light, i use pp4&5 otherwise
What frame rate and resolution do you normally shoot for slow mo?
Warathanut S. 1080 @ 60
