- Let's do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful, tonight with Bruce McCurdy, Kurt Leavins and David Staples. Tonight they dig into the Western Conference Final between the Dallas Stars and the Edmonton Oilers, with 9 Things about the series.
Connor Mcdavid has decided it's time to win the Stanley Cup.
The Oilers have the best intangibles of the final four.

Dial it in Stu. And let's mention the impact of Paul Coffey on the mindset of this team. Bouchard is a Coffey clone, Nurse is looking like he is almost worth the money, Kulak has never played this well, Desharnais is the PK rock, Ceci has confidence in his role and Ekholm is the rear guard admiral. And the forwards have learned to take the player in the slot and back check. Keep to the discipline.
I think this was my favourite podcast that I’ve listened to in the last several years. It was very informative, you all took a lot of time to explain things, all three of you being on was great, and it was lighthearted but very informative. I might be wrong, but I don’t think Dallas, and their fans should be nearly as cocky as they are coming across. As in all playoffs, goaltending is much of the battle and for Skinner, this is his moment to shine or be relegated to what could’ve been.
I believe that Picard is a playoff goalie and I hope that knoblach has seen that!…some goalies just totally shine in the playoffs like bobrovsky…not that Picard is a bobrovski but picks could be real good for us!
It was him in net when the Oilers beat Dallas this year.
Can't wait to see the Oilers spank the Stars and shut up the critiques

Daryl Reaugh (laugh), Most notable for eating popcorn and watching Grant Fuhr play 75 games in a season. Great experience for becoming a hockey analyst. Watch lots of games. I think he watched more games as a backup goalie than any other.

Ok, one thing that ticks me off is how no one, not once since the beginning of the playoffs, have commented on Edmontons lack of finishing checks. Clearly it's not in their style of play, generally, but it's the damn playoffs, finish your check. Did you see the NY/Florida game last night? Man Florida was crushing it with finishes.
I would adjust David’s requirement of average goaltending by Skinny to compete to very good goaltending required to win. He will have to be damn good for Oil to have a good chance to win this series.

Considering the Oilers were terrible out of the gate at the beginning of the year under Woodcroft, overlooked stats through 82 games are Dallas outscored Edmonton by 4 goals (298 to 294) and Dallas only had 3 fewer goals against than Edmonton (234 to 237)
As a Stars fan I really enjoyed the show gentlemen.
First of all, I’m REALLY hoping that the team is not buying into the fan hype of this being the easiest series so far.
Evan Bouchard with Ekholm has been insane, and scares me nearly as much as the McDuo.
I have just a couple of points of contention.
The defensive depth definitely falls off quickly for the Stars, but I think our top 5 is definitely better than your top 5.
Miro > Bouchard
Harley > Ekholm
Tanev > Nurse - by a lot
Lindell > Desharnais - by a lot
Suter >= Kulak - small if any advantage
So sure if an injury happens we’re up a creek, but the defense as it is currently is most certainly an edge for Dallas. And the fatigue should not be an issue at all with the extra rest 🤞.
I think you briefly touched on it, but I think it is the main sticking point for Stars fans, that the EDM team lives and dies with the McDuo.
With the 4 lines rolling and Miros ability to shut down McDavid (1 point in 3 games this season) and the addition of Tanev, I think the Stars can effectively neutralize those guys for at least 4 games.
It’ll be a fun series with two great teams and I’m excited to see how it all plays out.

I don't watch the games anymore, I watch the "Sportsnet"-'Live Tracker' in conjunction with the, "What's Happening"/"Live" feed commentary on 'X', and then watch the highlights later when posted online, and then, the post game, "Cult Of Hockey"/"Got Yer Back" podcasts. Viewing on my terms with limiting all the advertisement greed propaganda.

Dallas is very good knocked off last 2 Stanley Cup champions, made it to western finals last years to game 6. They are very good but there are no easy teams left in playoffs this year. Oilers still got a shot I think advantage is to Dallas but that doesn't automatically mean Dallas will win.
Yes they did, but let's be honest neither of those teams had a great season. Lots of ups and downs. Avs have now made early exits two years in a row since their win. They also lost some key pieces since that cup team.
While impressive that they beat two good team, they weren't the same teams that won their cups.
I would argue Vegas team was better than the team that won the cup last year. I mean how much were they over the cap by?@@TH-tl6sy
@@TH-tl6syyou could argue that Vegas was even deeper this year then last year. Don’t let their 8th seed fool you, HIGH possibility that they could be in the WCF. They are a very good team even if they exploit the cap
Stars pk is not exceptional, but their ability to stay out of the box might be. People seem to talk about Tanev-Lindell vs McDavid, but it's historically been Heiskanen spotted against McD and McK, which I expect to see here in the fist game as well. Winning first game against Dallas is not of the same importance as it was with Panthers-Rangers, since Dallas have lost like 7 game 1. in row, are not surpriced by the loss and the best road team. This series might end up being a chess of being able to draw penalties and to avoid them.
The Oil need to take advantage of what ails Dallas in 1st games and really take it to them at the drop of the puck....Otter is not invincible, I hear he let's in softies too so the boys need to take alot of shots, just dont be too pretty. The pp has to pick it up! ....Lastly, they need to punish their stars when ever the opportunity arises especially Heiskinen, Johnston, Robertson, Stankhoven, Seguin, Benn ....et al.....G O G!
Coach deboer always tried to get lindell and tanev out against Mackinnon. I’d expect that duo to be out against Mcdavid and Miro and Harley against drai. Then again Dallas never really has set D pair they are always switching guys around constantly

Besides the players already performing at a high level, Oilers can only advance if all forwards (McLeod and Foegele in particular) learn from Hyman and go to the blue paint, as Nuge has started to, and if all d-men learn from Ekholm and play smart both ways. And Skinner and Pickard have to keep sv% around .910. And, knock on wood, of course they have to stay healthy, and avoid drugs and blood clots.
Miro Heiskinen likes to rush the puck ALOT. The Oliers need to make a plan and make him pay, Catch him in the trolley tracks, or strip him of the puck and score on an odd man rush. G O G!

Second time praising the coach for calling the time out after the second goal in game 7 but I believe you should have called the time out after the first goal due to nature of horrific giveaway to calm things down and would have avoided the second goal. Calling a timeout after the second goal was obvious and anyone would have did it...

In the Playoffs anything can happen, and I would love to see the Oilers in the SCF but I don't think it will happen.
But It would be a wonderful surprise if they do.
Y'all don't understand the pro sports climate in the Metroplex. You have a crowd that is entirely fed up with 30 years of failure from the beloved Cowboys. Meanwhile, the Rangers just won the World Series and the Stars and Mavericks are both in their respective confrerence finals. It is completely fair to feel very good about taking on Edmonton after beating Vegas and Colorado.
And with that understanding, you all might just be able to contemplate how we are about our hockey.

Neither Vegas nor the Avs are anywhere near their Cuo winning forms.
The Avs in particular are the defintion if a one line team with the worst goalie in the playoffs. And Vegas is old and slow with mediocre goaltending.
Otter is pretty good but people need to stop acting like he's the second coming of Marty Brodeur

Dave Bruce, I hear Nurses analytics isnt good....For a guy who makes 9.3 million that's not good to hear. I dont think he hasnt scored a goal or much points this years playoffs, and Cece has scored what? 2 hiuge goals!?....Somebody needs to tell Nurse we need him this series, atleast he needs to shut down and punish their best players, play solid defense and contribute in that way. They can do it guys but everyone needs to bring their A game....G O G!
