- Let's do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful, tonight with Bruce McCurdy and David Staples. Tonight they dig into Edmonton's 8-1 win over the Panthers of Florida with their 2 Good Things, 2 Bad Things, 2 Numbers and 1 Conundrum podcast.
I was there, it was the loudest game I've ever been to. It was absolutely crazy in there. What an experience!! It spilled out into the Ice district too, we took an Uber home and for about 15 Kms from the Rogers Place , EVERYONE was honking and waving Oilers stuff, crazy and awesome!
Ya great to see and experience!
The shot of Luongo in the luxury suite not looking happy was priceless, didn’t want to see him lift the cup on Canadian soil
lol, it sure was.
My numbers are 8,16 and 5. The length of the winning streaks we went on after losing 3 games this season.
Good call Chriswall.
Oooh baby!
Brown and Janmark were amazing this game!
I'd pay to hear the outtake reel when staples realized he hadn't hit record. Professional of you guys to power thru and do a take 2 👏
...funny.
😂
What a glorious night
...I may be late to the party, but Janmark is impressing more and more. This guy doesn't take crap from anyone. He is big enough... but he plays bigger (71 take note). OILER depth should not be underestimate.
I didn't see who got the first star, but it should have been Janmark. He got them going.
That's exactly right Norm, well said sir.
Janmark is a great, gritty player, exactly what the Oilers need. So glad he got to shine here because the dude is totally fearless, just goes for it and isn't afraid of any fights.Absolutely some of the softer players need to learn from him (McLeod... lol). Janmark, along with Brown are wonderful to watch, at times they've been more consistent and direct than the superstars, they are for sure Oilers' most underrated players.

This was a nearly perfect game and the biggest posterior punting by one team over another certainly in the series. Bob got chased from the net. Stolarz was "better" but it's like comparing toxic waste to trying to swim a deep lake filled with excrement while intoxicated, they're both bad it's just that one will kill you faster (you're guess as to which). Florida did get one goal (hence the nearly perfect) but other than that Stu made some great saves. The guys in front of him did a great job (double the blocks per NST. almost double the takeaways (though nearly double the giveaways), the PK was perfect, the PP Scored (on a 5 on 3). When Florida decided that the game was best played without the puck and by hitting and scrumming no one backed down. There were a couple of foolish penalties (the first one by Nurse less than 2 minutes into the period is coming to mind) but honestly it wasn't bad. Minutes played were a LOT more balanced. Take care all
Thanks david for your bad things segment! Florida has made just as many mistakes this series as the Oil. Their goalie has bailed them out repeatedly! Not saying we’re gonna pull the impossible reverse. But this GD series has been a lot closer than the extremely quiet Kings, Canucks & Panthers trolls will admit today! (Stars fans stay classy!)
Right Kwaty! Bailed by Bob, but one can only win a lotto so many night is a row. But Bob's buns are Burnt.!
Panthers ain't that tough... just a bunch of fakers and divers.
That's Nurse hit to start the game Bennett was crying on the bench like a baby and then goes to the back for less than a minute and doesn't miss a shift... and was skating as fast as he can too. Panthers must have a white mage on staff.
A true Maurice coached team.
Saw that replay where he's crawling on one leg, looking around for call, then gets up and skates to the bench.
So pathetic a dive/fake. Glad the refs got the call right.
@@MichaelLangdeaurefs are onto them! And I think they know it!
@@kimcloud8995 when I saw that I thought, wow what a miraculous recovery there 😅
Yep - I called it as soon as I saw it happen. They were pining for a 5 minute/game and when they didn't get it he had to go through with the 'oh I'm hurt bad' thing anyway, even had an assistant trainer 'help him' to the back. I'm sure they shared a laugh, Bennett said "long enough" trainer said sure and he walks back to bench on his own with not so much as a limp. If I were Knob, I'd of called it out and he still may, maybe not as obvious as what Tocchet did but I'd somehow work the 'what kind of miracle cure do they have in their dressing room'. Lindell was exact same with Foegle - he stayed in room for what, 10 minutes, only to as not show up the officials for calling the 5 min and game. IF they do it again, I want to see an embellishment penalty called on them. Especially if they do a review and call it after reviewing.
So satisfying, this series did not deserve to be 3-0...Lady Luck flipped the script last night, those posts the Panthers hit when the game was tied were ours previously. Only need 3 more!
P.S. Congrats to Connor and the Oiler team for two more records!
The boys finally started shooting High. We all know Bobrovsky has a Koskinen glove. Florida will protect him better next game. Oilers odds are slim at coming back in this but I'm so glad they gave the fans this game.
All they need to do is win 1 more game. Win on Tuesday, that's all they need to accomplish the next step required to win the cup. Odds are at least 50/50 that they can accomplish that objective.
@@BackPorchCountryPodcast If the teams are evenly matched in all ways, the chances of the Oilers winning the next game is always 50/50. Stay in the present.
Second time is the charm , boys ; thx for the redo
2:40 Janmark was actually deflecting the puck wide, it bounced off the Florida player into the net😂
Great breakdown David Staples. Nice work)
Invite Shania back for the next home game!
Get the next one and i think it will go 7
get the next two... just to be sure...? :P
If. I do think the way the Oilers faced down elimination with the Canucks is helpful for them. And getting big play from the second tier of players like Holloway, Brown and Janmark is what it will take to win another game or two. I think Bobrovsky's rather passive play is also encouraging -- the guy stole the first game, was a real problem in the third game, but not the fourth. Florida looked very vulnerable: the whole team looked slower. I'm a Canucks fan but I do hope the Oilers get to 7 games. That's all any team or fanbase can ask for. Down to 1 game.
Whatever happens over these next days, they can never take this 8-1 Stanley Cup Final game victory away from me. As a younger fan that did not experience the glory days of this club, June 15th 2024 was the best Oilers game of my life and I will never forget it!!!
Go Oilers Go! 💙🧡
The best part of last nights victory was you know at the 2nd int, Panthers were probably saying something like "I don't care if it's 6-1, we aren't rolling over, let's play some "Panthers hockey" and at least win a Period before going back home blah blah blah"
They come put and start the 3rd by outshooting the Oilers 9-1 which the Oilers withstand then shove it back at them and said "Here eat two more goals!". Sure it was garbage time. Whatever.
Commentators where asking if Oilers should run up the score or will that anger/motivate Florida? If the Panthers aren't motivated enough by this point than they shouldn't be in the SCF to begin with. but I didn't want the Panthers to have ANYTHING to feel good about from that game.
Goalie Bob got some rest. Let's give him more. Just gotta get the puck over his pads. Henrique and 2xHolloway goals were beauties, and McD and Nurse made him look human after all.
No surprise to me at all, I expected a big win. This team just loves to be in do or die to turn it loud. "Oilers A game beats any team in the NHL" I said at the start of the playoffs, and this still isn't their A game, but B plus got it done. Their A game will be needed though from here out to close this deal. Janmark is sadly and badly underrated. He has picked up his game in a major way, and I hope the fans give him his due from here out. I rate this game as 5 Fantastic magical bags of Pancakes! 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞!
Janmark is a great, gritty player, exactly what the Oilers need. @@tired_Draisaitl Wow, very very well said. Right on ya Brown as well, played imo his best game as an Oiler, and as you say "at times bringing more consistent and direct hockey than the superstars". Indeed sir!)
Another Oil win, and the series is as close as it can be after five games.
Oilers in 7
I agree…we solved old Bob and now we will bull our way to the cup!
Bruce’s playoff beard
Keep cheering! Oilers in 7! BELIEVE.
Bruce, as co-pilot, you will have to begin by asking "Are you recording...."
I guessed that David forgot to record when there was no podcast after the first game of the cup final.
David if you want to remember one of Bouchard’s hits watch the last 5 seconds of the first period. Ekblad charges in ,out of position to deliver some punishment. Bouchard sees him and does a reverse hit that drops Ekblad like a bag of potatoes
Great Oilers home ice win. Hopefully not the last this season 😬. Panthers hit a few post, Skinner made some crazy saves. Morning after analysis states game likely not as lopsided as 8-1 suggest. Just like the series is not as lopsided as 3-1 suggest. Florida will be better next game. Oilers better be ready to go in with the same intensity and battle again.
That should raise some confidence and increase some doubt. This pounce only opens up the concept of possibilities. A win in game 5 and we've got a series.
Love to see Bennett and Tkachuk get smacked around. Cheap shot after whistle artists.
You guys nailed it, thanks for the podcast fellas. You love to see the oilers play to their potential and show everyone who they really are. Beat Florida with skill and this series should really be 3-1 oilers if it weren’t for the small mistakes and bad goals against. Oilers have outplayed Florida mostly in this series. Florida is cheap, and it’s a shame Kane is hurt because boy, he’d sure put the screws to Bennett and Tkachuk. One game at a time, and regardless what happens this is something to build on for next season.
wow, whyte avenue was celebretory ... too much in my estimation ... we've got a long way to go to win the cup ... that said whew at least we didn't get swept. More importantly, our big guns get to realize they have a team to play with. One more home game please fellas!
9:40 exactly, Bob is not impossible, to score the Oilers just need to get up close, preferably have a diversion and then just crash the net. Gotta be close, try something and see what happens, catch things on the rebound, play directly, aim upwards, use confusion to your advantage. Passing across the ice and telegraphing your every move and intention to shoot long shots just doesn't work on him nor on the Panthers' defence.
And they need to raise the puck at least above pad height.
McD and Nurse goals were from distance but higher.
Gotta put away the Oilers before they figure you out.
Calling it a huge win would be an understatement.
Keep the puck moving and skate hard, only three wins to go!!!
Well said Squishy!
Throughout the season i did not understand Connor Brown's role. But he has been fantastic in the playoffs with Janmark.
Bad thing: There’s the Ovi spot, the Drai spot, then there’s the Nurse spot. A few feet, about 45 degrees, in front of the left post, usually on the weak side (ie when puck on right side), in a place that makes him too far from any useful spot. Case in point, at 8"20' of 3rd period, Ekholm is pressured and Fla gets two good chances, allowed by Nurse, because: he didn't obstruct the forechecker charging around the back of the net; he wasn't in position to take a rim pass; he was 2 feet away from the slot, which in the NHL is a vast distance. Yeah, it was an 8-1 romp, but there’s no room for error now.
There is a you tube clip of Bouchard’s reverse hit on Ekblad. It’s a good video with the puck nowhere to be seen
First goal - If Barkov hadn't dove into the scene so fast then Janmark might have missed Barkov's chest with his errant backhand shot. That first goal was all Barkov.
Hockey gourdes. That shot was way off.
David. Damn you!!!!
Bruuuuuce!
Just a quick comment here to praise Bruce's Edm. Journal "player grades'" articles. Nothing against David's or Kurt's (and they're both outstanding pocasters), but their writing quality leaves a little to be desired. Somehow, though, Bruce's entries are fabulously well written and always well measured. I'm aware that Bruce puts in some time, energy, and craft to his written articles, and I just wanted to think him for it.
Bobrovsky is a true Jekyll and Hyde goalie. If he's on his game he's a Vezina winner. But when he goes off his game you get a result like his last game. This weird inconsistency has dogged Bob throughout his career and has made a shambles of his playoff results. So, maybe Edmonton has his number, but maybe not. It's only one game, as bad as it was, and Florida has a very good team in front of their goalie so we'll have to wait until the next game is played to find out which Sergei shows up. Stuart Skinner is much younger and greener than Bobrovsky, but I see a similarity between these two opposing goaltenders and it's not a good one. Skinner has also been very inconsistent in these playoffs, even benched for a couple games. I do hope Skinner manages to outgrow these inconsistencies for the Oilers' sake. Back in the day, everyone knew Grant Fuhr wasn't going to win a Vezina trophy since those Oilers teams didn't really much practice the philosophy of team defense, at least during the regular season. But come playoff time it was a different story and few goalies were ever better than Fuhr when it came time to make the clutch save in the playoffs. I see only little glimpses of that with Stuart Skinner's play thus far. But Skinner has more growth and learning to be done in the NHL so, hopefully, he can achieve better consistency than Sergei Bobrovsky has shown in his career. I still think Florida wins the series but I don't know how many more games that will take. As much as this series is huge for the Oilers whether they win or lose, the man for whom this series means the most has to be Sergei Bobrovsky. When a goalie is a Vezina contender throughout much of his regular season play in his career, but is a somewhat notorious choke artist throughout most of his playoff career, that has to leave a cloud of doubt over his head. Losing four straight to a clearly better Vegas team and a hot rookie goaltender last year is one thing. If the Oilers, by some miracle, come back in this series to win the Stanley Cup, that is a monumental choke of another greater level. If this happens to the Panthers and Bobrovsky it could actually break Sergei psychologically and finish his career. Florida will never have a better chance to win the Stanley Cup than each "next game" in what remains of this series. If the Panthers and Bobrovsky blow this, it will rank up there with other all-time epic fails in pro sports history. That's why I still think Florida wins this because of the shadow losing this series now would cast over the team and everyone involved with the Panthers.
The Oilers turned the Panthers from Tight Ends into Wide Recievers .RIP Dutchy.
The assists thing means absolutely nothing if we dont win at least one cup in the Mcdrai era. Absolutely nothing boys.
One at a time, but the blood is in the water.
That flasher fan must have been naked by the end of the game
Bobrovski does bleed his own blood.
What is the function of Corey Perry?😊
🎉
Bobrovsky is a very good goalie. I don't think he is that good at stopping brake outs (witch won the game). With out his fantastic defenders in front of him, he seems to struggle. Go Oilers. It's a steep hill, but very possible.
Get rid of Ceci next season and keep Desharnis in 😊
Same lineup game 5. Healthy or not kane sits out. Maybe deharnis for Broberg
Broberg has been great. No way he sits.
U kidding. Broberg has been better than nurse, ceci and close to kulak.
Have you been watching this series? Taking Broberg out would be ridiculous!!
Deharnis better defensively , broberg too many turnovers, gets caught up ice. Watch. Didn’t cost them in the blowout ,but will when game is tight checking again in game 5
I have to say that it is humors, for those that may have missed it the Oiler's came back from the Abyss and STOMPED the Panthers and now are on their way to get fitted for their rings. 🤡 show from the fan base again.
I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade - I love the fact we not only won, but we blew them out. However, the Panthers lost this game about as purposefully as you can. They've never won a Cup, are cocky as you know what (starts with F) that they can beat us at any time if they play their game so they decided winning it at home would be better. Not saying they had a team meeting and decided that, but they as a collective group sub-conciously did this. Game 5 will be a totally different team, expect the same Panthers team we saw in game 2 - and IF the Oilers can win that game, it's series on - but I would of bet an Oilers win tonight as a sure thing and Tuesday same, I'd bet on the Panthers - it's a sure thing and easy money
That hit from behind on Foegle 18:40 of the second period...What a Gdam pathetic non call yet again. Hard to stomach after Nurse's penalty to start the game when any fool would have said to the Panther "Get up, Grow up, and stop pretending or get an unsportsmen penalty". Anyway, great stuff otherwise, 3 to go)
Yup Ace! But he took a hit to make a play that lead to a goal. Nobody flops on our team & it is something to be proud of! Just play. Just win!
@@kwaty Hi Kwaty!) You are correct again lol)
What do you expect from a Paul Maurice led team. You do that one too many times, and you tell the refs you think they are gullible.
@@dnice4145 Well put)
@@Ace96x10 The little show of limping down the tunnel and popping right back out must also have alerted the refs, if they are any good.
Nurse doesn’t deserve an eight in player’s grades. He could have taken a major and killed the Oiler’s last chance
You also don’t deserve to be an oilers fan 🤷🏻♀️
To cancel the soccor style actors they should say if they call a major penelty and game then the injured player also cannot come back to the game, i dont watch soccor snd if these actors continue in hockey I will not be watching it in the future
It was important to NHL, Canada and Oilers that they won one game and Panthers delivered.
Florida threw the game for the NHL brass. No way Gary wants this to be a sweep.
I've seen this nonsense take all over the place. You think a team like the Panthers would throw a game? Give your head a shake. They don't want to lose any game. This was the first game where the bounces didn't go their way.
@@dnice4145 Who does your daddy work for?
@@schwamieboy1 you're the one coming with fantasy "tin foil hat" conspiracies. Lol

Oh, and same with Boston - they blew that game purposely (NBA) - plus 1 more game means more money for league and teams.
I realize this is an oilers station, something major not being mentioned is NURSE knee on knee hit based upon game 1 standards needs to be a 5 and a game
There is no standards in penalty calling. That is old news.
What standard? Warren Foegele got 5, and Bennet only got 2 for the same knee on knee.
@@chriswall1667And there was an angle that showed that Foegele's wasn't knee on knee, but he was tripped.
i prefer 1980's rules where the call would be "get up and stop whining".
Bennett laid on the ice, looking like he couldn't skate at all, seen the arm go up and then got up and skated to the bench. Missed maybe 90 seconds, came back at full speed. Give me a break lol
