    Only problem is... the 10mm delivered more energy on target and spent that energy in a shorter distance from impact. .357 is certainly no slouch but I give the title to 10mm and more importantly, I carry 10mm for bears and surly 2 legged beasts.

    The most important factor in comparing two different rounds is sectional density. Bullets with a higher sectional density always penetrate deeper. If using a 180 gr in . 357, you will need a 220 grain in the 10mm to have a approximately equal sectional density. I shoot only 220 grain hard cast in the 10mm for hunting. Shoots completely through every deer and hog I have ever shot with it.

    That 357mag load was mild. There's a lot more room north of that.

    I like 10 mm , but I LOVE 357 magnum !!! It has history ,versatility , and performance . Extremely available and cost effective . Put some federal 158 gr. soft points in that 1894 then shoot through the Chrono and into gel !!! This is my hunting load . AMAZING ! P.s. better tie that gel down when you gonna shoot it with this load !

      I'm old school, took me years to fall out of love with the 38. Now I'm 40, 357 back up. 10 mil is little much for my shoulder injuries. Wow, must admit first time I've seen a 10 mil revolver.

    The main difference is the sectional density of the bullets. The 357 180g has a .202sd whereas the 10mm 180g has a .161sd.

    Due to expansion, 10mm wins. If it passes through without much expansion, then you limit damage and blood loss.

      It depends what you are shooting at. These results show that the 10mm is not much of a "Grizzly Bear" round that it's fans are led to believe, especially for those that believe it is better over the .44 mag.

    • @jonathancaldwell-km5ig
      @jonathancaldwell-km5ig Рік тому

      You don’t use hollow points for grizzly bears. Which is what he loaded. You can go up to 220 gr with 10mm and have 15 rds instead of 6. Carry what you want but it’s pretty obvious which one is better with the right rounds.

    I would argue that the 10mm is the better round because of the over penetration of the .357 Magnum.

  • @TrulyUnfortunate

    10mm. No doubt.
    The .357 is faster with factory loads and penetrates deeper but the 10mm. dumps way more energy into the target.

    I owned a 686 and it was a great gun. The primary reason to use a 10mm is that many guns of this caliber are much higher capacity, 8 with 1911 style and 15 with Glock style. My simple understanding g is that your able to deliver more shots on target than with a 6 or 7 round revolver.

    Enjoyed watching your video. Results were as I expected. I think if you're looking to for penetration depth, the bullet with the higher sectional density will win in these calibers. I think a very interesting test would be to see how the 158 grain 357 xtp does against the 200 grain 10 mm xtp. Those bullets are closer in sectional density.

    I don't have a 10 but many .357s and I definitely trust a revolver over a semi auto but I do have quality semi auto's in .45 .22wmr .22 5.7x..28 lever action in .44 mag 45/70 and many .44 mag revolvers. I'm guess you'd say I'm blessed. Nice video thanks!

    Its your test with your interpretation of the results and I respect that , but........
    It looked to me that the volumetric wounding of the 10mm outperformed .357.
    I don't have much use for pinhole wound channels even if they're six inches longer.
    I enjoyed all aspects of your video , and thought the reloading was not boring at all.

    Interesting test. I haven't seen your channel before but I like your objective approach. I am a 357 magnum enthusiast, the Delta Elite I had is a good gun and a friend has it now. I just figured that my USP45 and Glock 21 can handle 45 Super should I want that power level. Realistically though, if I want more than a 45 ACP+P gets I'll break out the 44 magnum or 454. For anti personnel use with the 357 I still like the old Remington 125 grain SJHP. Thanks for posting, I like your empirical approach.

      Caps Lock is a button on a computer keyboard that causes all letters of Latin and Cyrillic based scripts to be generated in capital letters. It is a toggle key: each press reverses the previous action. Some keyboards also implement a light, to give visual feedback about whether it is on or off.

    Great video. I used to shoot about 400 to 500 rounds a week before the Covid-19 pandemic and the crazy ammo shortage. Luckily I guess in some way, I had bought a lot of ammo right before the Covid-19 scare and shutdown happened. Since ammo in my area if you can get it has gone up in some cases 500%, I see the need to start reloading even though the timing seems to be so late. I’ve been told that ammo prices will return to normal someday, I find it hard to believe. I mainly shoot 9mm, 10mm, 45acp, 357 mag, 223 and 12gauge. I didn’t want to start out with a reloader and wish I would have upgraded. I would rather start with the best that I could afford and bite the bullet from the beginning. I know very little about reloading and it seems that you have a lot of knowledge and take a very intelligent approach to reloading. In watching your video you made it seem so relaxing to reload. I am trying to avoid making one round at a time since I shoot often and like to shoot a lot of rounds when I do.

    Throughout the years I’ve known one shooter here that shoots a 10mm in the S&W 610 revolver !
    I just looked at ballistic data ( loadings ) of both ctgs !
    In Sierra’s fine manual for the 10mm I see the powder you used BE 86 in your loading , velocity and energy !
    In the same manual I looked at 180 grain bullet loadings in the .357 ctg just in case I buy a box of 180 XTP Bullets to try , I may very well do that !
    Energy for that bullet with a hunting load is 783 Ft. Pd. which is a good amount !

    That 10mm load is about par for the course for 5 different brands I happen to have. The .357 was very mild compared to most others.
    My upper end 10mm loads are 950 to 1000 foot pounds of energy.

    Nice revolvers. I have a regular 686 from the 1990’s and love it. Easy hits at 100 yards. I can imagine that 7” 686 is that much better. I have a Glock 20, and have shot the Glock 40, and both can make some great hits. The Glock 40 is very comparable to the 686 in accuracy.

    One of the most important things we can take away for these great test as a side by side comparison, is the projectile performance envelope as these bullets are reacting in the gel blocks.
    We are seeing how higher velocity is causing earlier expansion with slightly less penetration. Each bullet design has a velocity window of its design for optimum performance.
    Mr. Revolver Guys testing clearly shows this quite well. The 357 XTP 180 grain bullet with dual cannelures may serve a dual purpose as a hunting bullet that could be used from pistols and rifles chambered for caliber of different 35 caliber cartridges, whereas the 10mm/40 caliber bullet is designed for pistol mostly chamberings like the 40S&W shorter barreled performance.
    Even the higher velocity from the KRISS 16" carbine, the performance remained very close to that form the revolver. Should they have been shot from a shorter barreled pistol and from a 40S&W the bullet may have equaled or actually traversed further into the gel because they may not have opened up as much.

    This is EXACTLY why I would prefer (if I HAD to pick one) the .357 round over the 10mm round in big bear country. On large game it's ALL about penetration. And, the better ballistics coefficiency of the .357 gives it better depth. For me personally, I think BOTH rounds are too light for big bear defense. Just my opinion

  • @JimD4570
    @JimD4570 3 роки тому +2

    Great video, I'm guessing the jacket on the 10mm slug was much thinner due to sectional density on the fatter bullet... If you were shooting a hard cast I bet they would have been much closer in penetration depth.. I would say the 10mm did much more tissue damage. If hunting, the 10 mm would have made a nasty wound channel...

    Sir, the comparison must be:
    "140gr .357MAG vs 180gr 10mm" AND "158gr .357MAG vs 200gr 10mm" --> comparison must be based on almost identical Sectional Density.

    • @publickdefendrr8101
      @publickdefendrr8101 4 роки тому +2

      I can agree with that... But I believe that this was strictly an Apples to Apples Ballistics Gel "Penetration" test only, and not necessarily a true real world Ballistics Gel test. I'm a 10mm guy myself, but I also really like my .357 Mags as well.
      IMHO, when it really comes down to it, there's really no comparison which caliber is best, especially for the Conceal Carry - the 10mm has roughly the same, or more stopping power, with twice the ammo capacity in most cases. My Glock 29 Compact 10mm holds 10+1.. My Rossi .357 only holds 5 or 6 (I forgot) - and you really can't carry the Revolver.. So the 10mm wins easily in my book. But I love to shoot both of em at the range!

    Seems like awful light. 357 rounds. 1150fps out of a 7" barrel? Should be at least 1500fps with factory loads

    I knew the .357 MAG would win... No Doubt

    Huh, that .357 mag was moving surprisingly slow. I've clocked the Buffalo Boar 180 grain .357 mag load at 1,490 from my 6" GP100. On paper the .357 mag should be more powerful . The penetration results weren't surprising given the sectional density difference.

    being a mechanic and knowing the importance of tolerance is ,how easy should it be to reload, my grandpa did it but sadly passed before he could teach me. anyone with real knowledge please message me

    DamnI wish I wouldn’t have procrastinated years ago and bought a reloader set, powder and primers! My reloading buddies are having just as hard a time getting components to reload as I am with commercial ammo. My gut told me to buy the 4 stage set and stockpile powder and primers!
    I’m stupid and put it off and now I don’t see the point until things settle back down. IF they ever do!
