Here's something a lot of people don't understand. It's easy to look back at the players of the 2000s, 90s, 80s, etc and draw inspiration from someone's gameplay and improve on it. Players like Jerry West was using nothing but his imagination and hard work to be this good. It's not like they had ESPN top 10 plays on the TV or UA-cam compilations. The players of this Era had to make it all up as they went along.
I agree, well said.
Most def. He was definitely one of the innovators of the game. No surprise why Kobe has him in his top 5.
Thats what always think , we look kobe , mj , lebron highlights to improve our games
Wow I was just thinking this RIGHT before I read this comment! They were all free handed really Respect to Jerry West and RIP to Kobe, both legends....
I don't look at Lebron and Kobe to improve my game.
Kobe is MJ. He copied all MJ game.
So I learn from MJ and the others that created the moves. Pistol Pete, Dr. J and so on.
Even Bob Cousy and Bill Russell.
Bob Cousy style dribbling is fun to do and I use it some.
I am nowhere near as good at that style.
But I make players look like little kids with it. Even ex Highschool players and ex. college players.
They're not used to it. Almost every player never seen it in a game.
I can do crossovers too.
But Bob Cousy style is harder to do. Believe it or not.
Try it sometime after you practice it.
By the way I'm a outshape white guy. For those that think white players can't be good and are as good as little kids.
I beat kids that have a better crossover than mine.
Knowledge matters in sports.
It makes you a better player.
I've seen 40/50 yr old fat mostly white guys beat young 18 to 27 yr old skinny black guys that can jump higher and run faster.
In a regulation 40 minute game.
They won because of fundamentals, knowledge and experience.
So physical abilities is not everything.
MJ even got beat by guys 1 on 1 that could not even jump half as high as him and could not run as fast as him.
Larry Bird beat him. Larry Bird is said to be a slow white guy too.
Plus others. Does not matter who you're their is someone out there that can beat you 1 on 1.
Jerry West needs more respect. He was a pioneer of the NBA.
Teresa Isaac Needs more respect? Is this your first time watching basketball? Jerry West is literally - yes LITERALLY - the person on the NBA logo.
cwg73160 not him but I think he’s referring to people looking back on great players. I think now he’s more overlooked when someone talks about some of the best players ever.
needs more respect?? He's the logo of the nba!!!
@@cwg73160 Yeah. Hall of fame and the guy on the logo. LOL. I don't know how they could show him more respect.
cwg73160 it doesn’t matter if you’re the logo, people still disrespect people who deserve more recognition. Most players don’t even remember who JERRY West is
Jerry was incredible..usually when you watch older players they seem like they are playing an ancient game..He looks so fluid and at the time a futuristic style of play which would be normal in today's game minus the 3 point shot. I mean putting up 30 a game without 3s and at his size is legendary as hell. He is the logo for a reason.
Mr Clutch, in his words, was more like 6' 41/2", in his words. The google listing of 6'2" is total jank. Even during his career Jerry was listed at 6'3" which was wrong. West was at least 6'5" with shoes on like all players were measured as rookies from '73 on. facts
@@klicknkreate7077 Jerry West definitely not 6'2".
Old Jerry is taller than Stephen Curry and Steph is listed at 6'2" barefoot.
Looking at the ball when you dribbles Is not normal😟

He also played with a guy named Elgin Baylor who also put up 30 a game. One of the NBA's greatest duo's.

I’m here to make an edit tribute
RIP to a true legend to the game. I grew up watching West highlights since I was a little boy. Also Jerry was the literal pride of his hometown Chelyan, WV. They have a huge sign for him for whenever he came to town.
One of the nicest stop and go games ever. Subtle and sweet. Happy 80th.
Jerry was so far ahead of his time in terms of basketball skill and feel for the game. He’s the logo and he’s still one of the most under appreciated players ever because he only won one ring.
No such thing as "ahead of your time" he was just unique and one of the firsts to get things going in that direction
@@anthonygarcia8749 there’s a reason jerry west was so dominant in a centre based league and it’s because he shot a lot of pull up jumpers and knocked them down at great efficiency. West literally played like a guard in the 80s or 90s while the rest of the league was trying to score in close and hitting occasional mid range shots at lower efficiency. That’s the definition of “ahead of his time”.
He lost many close games. He had worse luck than LeBron, losing Elgin Baylor in some series and having an aging, achy Wilt, and mostly going against Bill Russell and those Celtics.
@@jedwing yep there’s been so many legends who haven’t got the respect they deserve because of unfortunate circumstances in their career that held them back from winning it all. West at least managed to win one chip.
bum
Imagine West playing in the Eastern Conf. and named All-Star

Jerry West great career shows why he is the nba logo thank you for everything you did for the lakers your always one of the top lakers of all time happy birthday Mr. Clutch
My father, who passed away last year at the age of 92, would marvel at what a great player that Jerry was with the Lakers. He told me about the shot he made from mid court to win the game against the Knicks. Respect.
I was watching that game with my dad and brother in D.C. What an amazing game. I also got to see him in 1972 in Cole Field House at U of Maryland. We had seats right behind the basket. I'll never forget a 3 on 1 of Wilt, Baylor and West coming right at us. Amazing. Also amazing was watching Wes Unseld and Earl "The Pearl" Monroe on the Baltimore Bullets.
the Lakers lost the game wdym
Shout out to this man. His dribble looked mad primitive until you reached. He baited guys with it so bad then pulled up. Deadly. as a Celtics fan I tip my hat to the logo. 60-s_70s NBA was fire.

Boy do I remember the 1971-172 season when they won 33 games straight which is still a record today. Lew Alcindor, Oscar Robertson and the Milwaukee Bucks ended that streak. That was also the game that Lew Alcindor decked Happy Hairston under the basket and Wilt Chamberlain ran towards Lew Alcindor and Lew was not gonna take on Wilt. The Lakers won their first world championship that year too against the Knicks. Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jim Cleamons, Leroy Ellis, Keith Erickson, Gail Goodrich, Happy Hairston, Jim McMillan, Pat Riley, Flynn Robinson, John Q. Trapp and coach Bill Sharman.

He finished 25k of points in 14 years before the 3 point line was introduced.
Think about it
Pc Hriatpuia he still is regardless
Shooters can play in any generation
"Playing" in any generation and being as efficient as they are today, are two ENTIRELY different things. ANY player can "play" in any generation.
@@Wis_Dom yes but I gaurentee he would be efficient in any era he played smart and used fundamentals and was a great defensive player too and he played to win
+Arnay Murray West, Jordan, Magic and Bird were all smart and versatile players. They could adjust and still be effective, i agree.
Angelo S. Lol I’m sorry but curry wouldn’t stand a chance against Abdul
@@Wis_Dom I feel Jordan would struggle in today's erra with the increased Range in shooting of players and his perimeter defense no you have players shooting from the hash off the break Jordon. Was a much better midrange and close defender where he would be in your jersey and in today's game alot of guards dont give that option. Closest he really had to deal with a problem like that was bird and Clyde and M.J Could never really lock down Bird . As far as Drexler he would play like Jordan. But also would shoot the ball from the 3
Rip !! Definitely was a baller !! One of the greatest you’ll be missed !!

I hope u mean that in a sarcastic way ..... because thats not true....
I know that MJ stated he looked-up to Jerry West and for that was one of his favorite players of all time. You can tell Jerry West had a bit of a fade away, it's my guess that's where MJ discovered his signature from.
I think Jordan’s fade was pure natural talent and instinct. Kobe modeled his fade after jerry. I think Kobe and Jerry have the prettier fade
My NBA Idol. No one else is named Mr. Clutch. RIP Logo
I’m 18 years old. Wish I was alive to see all these great players play 😢😢. Wish I could have seen the whole San Antonio Spurs legacy too. I got to see the wonderful ending in 2014 when I was 12 though. One of the best teams in NBA history. Beautiful basketball

Jerry Rocked!, He discovered Kobe when he was 17 years old! Thanks Jerry for bring The Mamba to Los Angeles!!!!!
How fast was his pull up. Rare to see today, unstoppable.
@MtVick Literally nobody in the history of the game has a pullup comparable to Jerry West. He went from hard dribble to being vertical and shooting in literally a split second. That is pure fundamentals and skill. Ain't all about athleticism. Being supremely athletic does not make you a good basketball player, as evidenced by today's league.
Jerry west, prettiest pull.up jump shot and most accurate , jerry west and gale Goodrich are best backcourt ever

Bob Cousy
Way before Jerry West
West is a Shooting Guard primarily
He was terrible at dribbling
@@pineapple123er5 thank you
@@pineapple123er5 actually he was incredibly effective, just choosing NOT to be flashy. back then, you try a crossover (or anything close to it) and you get called for carrying. it wasn't accepted by refs till pete maravich came along and brought his more entertaining brand of ballhandling, using misdirection, etc.
plain as his dribble was, nobody was picking JW's pocket. his handles didn't look pretty by today's standards, but it got him where he needed to go. and he was remarkably efficient, shooting-wise, in a remarkably inefficient age of offense. he took the extra defensive attention (he and elgin baylor carried those teams, so they got extra defenders thrown at them) and, along w/baylor, WILLED those lakers teams to the Finals ea. year, where they were overmatched (usually) by a boston team with 4-5 hall of famers @ the least, including bill russell, john havlicek, sam jones, etc.
JW was also a great athlete, sporting a vertical leap of 38-40" and good speed with the ball. he had limitless range, accuracy. he was a great passer, allowing him to move to PG in later yrs, to lead the league in assists while still being a great defender & scorer. oh, & he upped his output in the playoffs/Finals. and it just so happened that he was freaking CLUTCH as f**k. other than that, i guess he just sucked.
I don't think most people watching these highlights will understand how impressive his handles were. Put it this way.. Roughly 90% of the way most players today dribble the ball is carrying, even under the current rules, and was strictly called back in his day. For him to be able to move with the ball like that with pure technical form is beyond impressive.
Pretty basic by todays standards.
@@brandonm4754 Professional sports thrives off that perspective
@@brandonm4754yeah but the way the game was being called back then was different since you literally can't have your hand even to the side of the ball. So crossovers and between the legs are damn near impossible and changing the ball's direction mid dribble would also be called a carry (that's why even an in and out is impossible)
@@scordatura9259 I’m going to have to disagree. You can easily go through the legs and perform a crossover without traveling. (Including changing the balls direction during the dribble) In order to go left to right your hand was on the side of the ball in some way. You can see that as he’s (Jerry West) dribbling. Hand being under the ball is the problem. You don’t need to carry as it’s possible to do these moves without traveling as we did them routinely growing up in leagues that were ref trigger happy with calling violations.
@@brandonm4754 you Jerry west's generation? Then my bad I must've assessed the situation incorrectly since I only saw clips of the game back then
I love seeing how jerry played. At this time it was like jerry west was from the future the way he moved was like he was playing in the 80s and I love that he had to make up all the moves he had they didn’t have espn or anything
His game was Ahead of his time, so fluid. Him and Wilt are so legendary. Like Myths of the basketball world
His jump shot was so beautiful and is timeless 🔥

I concur mr clutch father and son
@Breno CV Considering this was in 60s to 70s, like 60 yrs ago, I think this guy would whoop any players now. This guy is tall enough, has good reach, can shoot and dribble. Basically a white Kobe and depending on his game IQ this guy could be better than Kobe which then he might be better than Jordan (maybe?) or maybe not, we may never know.
I did not know that Casey Neistat played basketball in the 60's 😂

He was great
I wish a guy like Jerry played in the nba today he’s so fun to watch play
These aren't really "highlights." It's just what's available because games were hardly televised in this era. In about 15 years in the NBA, they only have four mins of footage. Some clips are pretty amazing though. If the three point line was in at 1:54, Lakers would've won the title. Also, he wasn't really chosen as the logo. The artist chosen to make the NBA logo wasn't talented enough and copied a picture that just so happen to be Jerry West. Furthermore, it doesn't matter if he'd do well in today's game, he played when he played, and just leave it at that.
Virgil N So sad that fundamentals like this were lost in early to mid 90s !!!!!!!! Because of $$$
There is more footage.
There was less national televised games.
Yeah! Any great player would have been great in any era. Greatness is not something you suddenly lose because of the calendar. Greatness is mental in nature. If he was born today, his game would look different... He'd have all the skills that evolved with basketball in the last 50-60 years, but he still would've been the best. And he was pretty skillfull back in the day too.
@@loonaya "Greatness is mental in nature"? Try talent in that sentence. Sure mentality is needed, too, but talent and the gene pool someone is provided with come 1st without a doubt.
