I've watched three Jerry interviews and he's a mess in all of them. He clearly saw Kobe like a son and no parent wants to bury their son.
I think you're absolutely right.
Yes can see how much pain he is in he loved Kobe
Jerry West said for 2 years he felt like Kobe's father
You are so right
the entire laker nation is devastated that includes their legends Kareem knew kobe even as a kid because Kareem knew Kobe's dad
"You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days when you feel good."
- Jerry West
Sigh. I recently read about how West struggled with serious depression his whole life due to a horribly abusive childhood and other factors beyond his control. I have zero idea how he was able to work do hard while so depressed, I can't do it, but what a inspiration he is. Along with figure skating and ballet, I really enjoy the NBA. So many fabulous players who are so different, yet they come together and create great teams. They just do so much good. Guys like West and Magic and Bird and Barkley and Shaq and LeBron and Curry and Kobe etc... What an. Inspiration. Thanks Jerry et al.
Jerry West is maybe the classiest and most humble exec in professional sports
The Greatest exec ever in all sports !
JL MARTINEZ he’s a player first, an exec second. When he said “you never lie to players…” that resonated with me.
You can tell that he would rather have a genuine relationship with the players rather than over promise and talk down to them.
I haven’t watched basketball in over 25 years but I know enough about it to know he’s a genuine guy. I’m sure he’s scoulded a lot of players too, because he cares about them.
100 percent! Jerry West is a legend for good reason. He built trust with his teammates, players and didn’t sugarcoat it. I feel for the Lakers nation. RIP Kobe and Gianna and all the families impacted by this terrible tragedy.
Patriota Funchalense : Jerry West has been my idol since 1969 when he singlehandedly battled Bill Russell and the Celtics for the NBA Championship.
Hands down
“You cannot ever lie to a player.. never” Jerry West deserves to be the logo forever. He epitomizes class and respect. He’s what every man should strive to be character wise.
Kobe should be the logo now!!! His second father Mr West im sure wouldnt have a problem with that
Jack, that's an excellent statement and very accurate!
@@snakeman6124 It's wrong
Ain't that Something-- HONESTY ✌️💪💪🇺🇸☮️
Agreed
Jerry West is 81.. we need to appreciate are legends while there still here
Houston Mkenzi so is Kobe.
Nf G good one
I can't remember an NBA Superstar died this young.
Edwin Capidos Petro In ‘93 was the closest, Reggie Lewis is right in there as well but certainly never of this magnitude so soon
@@nevelefilms7336 And NBA became popular worldwide since Jordan Era..
"You can't play for that owner."
He knew Sterling was a bad man, and loved Kobe so much he didn't want him to play for him.
Was just about to say this ... Crazy man. Mr west god bless you
bad man but also a bad owner
I picked up on that too. he said "under no circumstances can you play for the the Clippers and that owner. Period." and i got a feeling that there was a tone in Mr. West's voice that let Kobe know that Mr. West was dead serious.
You caught that, too, huh? Great ears, Mars!
mars bar I agree! West is good man
Someone please keep an eye on Jerry... He's older and has a lot of pain in his heart. Older ones tend to decline health wise during heartache... Keep him close
This may look/sound cynical but I mean it with the absolute amount of love. IF Jerry West does pass on due to this horrendous tragedy, it may be for the best 'cause at least he'll get to see his son and his grand-daughter once again.
Yes. I thought the same, bless his heart. 😢
Jerry west looks awesome. He has the look and mind to get to 100 years old.
@@runningkirkwa2934 That's true. I think he's 81 if I'm not mistaken and he still looks healthy and 100% mentally there. No signs of being senile or anything. I'm sure he'll live to 100. I feel for him man. It guts me whenever I see a father lose a child and Kobe was definitely a son to Jerry
@Fetter Oger aus Emskirchen Just googled it. He's 81!
Right now Jerry and Kobe are having awesome 1 on 1 games right now in the heavens. Rip Kobe and Rip Jerry West
All the late Hall of Famers have a league of their own in heaven because it wouldn't be heaven without basketball.
That pain on Jerry’s face, I feel that. This hurts...

I totally feel for everyone who was so close to Kobe Bryant this is so heartbreaking it hurts my heart we lost an amazing legend. RIH kobe and Gianna and others in this terrible crash .so many loved so many young lost their lives too soon. My heart prayers and Condolences go out to all the families, teammates, etc .
@Terran M bro I hope you get help man this hate you have in your heart isn't healthy
@Terran M you right no one is as perfect as you buddy

Watching this again 2 years later and I still get choked up. Jerry’s raw emotion is so powerful. RIP Kobe
Right me too
It just seems so wrong that an 80 year old man was grieving someone half his age.
I truly believe Jerry thought of Kobe as a son
Is it just me, or am I overreacting? I kinda don't like how Shaq interrupted West, should've let him finish, I kinda felt some type of way.
Yeah…still pretty tough to watch
this is probably without a doubt the saddest thing that's happened in the sports community
ELITE 11 not just the sports community, the world. His touch reaches far more than just sports. He was an international icon. I’m not even a basketball fan but I’m hurting right now because of it. Everybody is.

I feel like Shaq saw Jerry about ready to lose it after he said that and Shaq stepped in and actually made him laugh 20 seconds later. It takes a very special and strong man to do something like that.
Maybe… but Shaq also loves talking about himself and never passes up an opportunity to do so.
@@justiceforjuicy6765 that's a fact and they said kobe was arrogant

One of the hardest things of all this is seeing how much he was loved and respected by so many people. Jerry West is a class act.

What people may begin to realize is that maybe Kobe didn't just emulate his game after Michael Jordan but he also emulated is game after Jerry West and was emulating Jerry. as far as life after basketball

Like Bruce Lee before him, Kobe is/will be immortalized. His legacy will last forever. His impact to the game of basketball speaks for itself but what will transcend his immense popularity as an athlete/celebrity is the wisdom and philosophies he shared with the world, particularly with the younger generation. His wisdom on basketball, approach to life, work ethic etc. is very similar to the martial arts legend who also died much too soon. Kobe's legacy will be similar. The game will inevitably evolve and the future, newer, younger generations may never truly appreciate his game but people will still be quoting and reciting Kobe's wisdom 100 years from now.

Jerry and Kobe are in a 1v1 in heaven right now. 2 legends
Jerry’s love for Kobe was as deep as Vanessa and his daughters’ love for him. Jerry really looked at him like a son. Imagine believing in a kid since he was 17 and he actually accomplished all the things you knew he was capable of doing. Then after 20 years he retires after an amazing career and gets to enjoy the rest of his life with his daughters and wife. He truly looked happy to be able to spend his time with the people he loved the most. Then out of nowhere his life gets cut short like this, it’s truly heartbreaking. Rip mamba! I will always appreciate what he did for the game. I’ll make sure my kids and their kids know about him. He was a bad man! An assassin on the court like no one else. The basketball world will never be the same! 🐍💔
Jerry was always right. Jerry west is the architect of GSW line-up like steph curry, green, Thomson, igoudala,et.al. that won a championship.
Literally was like losing a son for him
He had a similar mentality as a player to kobe
Probably recognized himself in him
"I don't think I can get over this, I really don't." - That hit me in the feels. My god, it's like watching a man who just lost his son.
It was a man that lost his son.

This was *Kobe's* dad and he was *Jerry's* son. So it's hard to see a father burying his son. I could listen to *Jerry* talk for years, this is truly touching😭
As much as it hurts to watch Shaq and MJ talk about him, this hits soooo much harder. Kobe was a little brother to MJ and Shaq, he was a son to Jerry.

It’s crazy out of everybody that spoke on him you can tell jerry really loved Kobe like a son he respected that man on so many levels
Wow, this is the most emotional man, who has cried and shown the most emotions for Kobe in front of the cameras. Watching Jerry West break down, and say he felt like a father to Kobe, there is absolutely no way Kobe would want anyone to replace Jerry West as the NBA logo.
In the same sentiment, there is no way Jerry would want to keep Kobe from getting the honor of being the new logo
Sumit Vinod Kobe would not want to take the logo from his mentor Jerry West
Jason Gunawardena did I say that tho? Read my comment before you reply.
Sumit Vinod Kobe and Jordan turned it down years ago
I didn't know the logo was Jerry. Neat. But does it really matter? it's just a silhouette
“I don’t know if I can get over this. I really don’t...” broke me... Jerry "The Logo" West is the classiest, the best NBA executive of all time and a true legend himself.
The wisdom of Jerry West brought us Kobe the legend over simply Kobe the basketball player. It took the logo’s blessing to usher Kobe to his destiny.
Jerry is class personified. Love 💜💛
Hunter Douglas his story is incredible.
Anyone here after Jerry's passing? Rest easy Mr. Clutch.
Seeing Jerry like this destroys me..no one is happy, everyone is trying so hard to talk about the good Kobe memories but it makes everyone more emotionally sad but the entire NBA has this feeling of not wanting to play because they are still mourning like all of us but haven't had the time to

It's 2024 and Jerry West passed away four days ago at the age of 86.
As most of you know, Jerry struggled with massive depression his entire life, in part largely due to his severely abusive childhood, but probably had genetic/hormonal causes, too. He developed an obsessive perfectionism which helped make him great, but also fed his depression. At the moment of his interview, the utter shock of Kobe's recent death had certainly plunged him deep back into deep depression.
Although he struggled with depression, he was as fierce a competitor as Russell, Bird, Magic, MJ and Kobe. He had a high IQ (overall IQ, not just bball IQ). He was a true leader, on the court and in the executive suite. He was a tremendous analyst of talent and people. He was an incredible tough person, yet so sensitive and empathetic that others' tragedies could affect him deeply. He often had to cut people out of his life for periods of time because his mind had to escape in order to process emotions. That cost him his first marriage. And yet he also was one of the most honest, genuine, authentic individuals many people knew. Those who counted him as a friend treasured that relationship. Shaq and Kobe looked up to him in reverence and always did.
I grew up a Celtics fan watching Russell, the Jones boys, and Hondo battle Jerry and Elgin's Lakers. And despite being a Celtics fan, I couldn't help but admire and become a huge fan of Jerry West. He was always one of my favorite players. When the NBA season starts up again this autumn, the Lakers' tribute at the first home game will be enormous.
Rest in Peace Legend the logo. 😢
The fact that Jerry West steered Kobe away from the Clippers, despite it being against his own best interest, because he knew what a piece of trash Donald Sterling was and is, says everything you need to know about Mr. West’s character.
He definitely knew all along Donald was horrible too bad the NBA didn’t for many years
@@josephbrooks9711 The NBA most definitely knew. And trust there's plenty other owners in the league and around other leagues that have the same mindset Sterling did
Gospel
@@stevenlopez1255 Yeah Sterling has some horrible character traits but that alone doesn’t disqualify him from doing business with the league. I’ve seen him at various WNBA and Summer League events over the past few years. He’s still an owner and investor whose knowledge and resources are needed, his flaws aside.
@Popi ReAL it's a boys club and the other owners wanted him out. He was running the franchise into the ground and was apparently just terrible to be around which was bad for business. I'm willing to bet the other owners had a part in the audio getting leaked. They wanted to force his hand and get him out of there.
I’m from New Zealand, grew up in the hood of New Zealand in a rural town. Kobe has never met me or knew I existed and the past two days I have been mourning. I cried driving home from work yesterday.
If anything, that shows how big Kobe is around the world. A grown man that doesn’t have any connection to Kobe apart from being a fan half way around the world is mourning. Such a sad day. I hope his family especially his wife, his other kids are supported and blessed for the rest of their lives!
Never hold grudges, be thankful and let your loved ones know you love them everyday.

It's obvious how much Mr. West cared about Kobe. Mr. West is one of the kindest, most generous people I've ever heard speak. He never disparges others and you can feel his genuine love and honesty. No wonder Kobe had a great relationship with Mr. West. Kobe was always seeking to improve and he was so bright and focused. His Legend lives on.
Our city is in enormous pain right now. I’ve never seen anything like this and hope I never do again. Blessings to all the families involved, and to everyone who reads this.
