The outlining effect is called haloing because it encircles the pen stroke like a halo. Great review! Just in case, though you probably know, other ink terms are; shading, caused by dropping pigments or slant of a table, so almost all inks can be shading, sheen is caused by crystals forming as it dries, shimmer is glitter added to an ink, ghosting is thin paper showing writing on opposite side, bleeding is when thin ink or crappy paper wicks the ink to the opposite side and sometimes into the next page. Really dry paper can wick ink more than paper that was sitting in a damp atmosphere. Feathering is when paper wicks ink sideways jaggedly into the fibers, if the ink spreads out evenly, it is called spread and blooming. Coated papers are papers that have either plastic added to the surface of powders pressed into it, our loose crushed cuttle fish bone added called pouncing. Dry pens write lighter colors, wet pens write darker, and as you know, thickness of the ink changes this as well. Ironically, thicker inks give a smoother writing experience but stay smearable for a longer time. Dip pens write darker, but you can dip a fountain pen and wipe it, then write with it and get a better example of how it looks when writing. I love olive green too! ❤️
I found this 1 month after, but I love this video format! Seeing inks of the same hue is really very helpful. Looking forward to more videos like this one ❤️
I really like the Noodler’s army green. I’ve seen it and never been drawn to it until I saw it compared to some other inks. I like the shading. I’m really grateful you did all this comparison to spare me shopping around. Sometimes I think I’m buying them more for the names their marketers target me with than for actual properties. I bought some wearingeul mad hatter and was so disappointed by how dry it is in my pen.
Rohrer & Klingner's Alt Goldgrun wrote too light for me and Monteverde Olivine was a bit flat so I mixed the two (3 parts Alt Goldgrun 1 part Olivine) and I absolutely loved the result. My favorite olive green inks are Diamine Safari...great shading and flows very well and Sailor Tokiwa Matsu...such a unique ink and the shading and sheen are amazing.
My faves are the Noodler's and the Rohrer and Klingner Alt-Goldgrun Ink. I prefer the browner toned olive greens. No matter how dark those end up, those always have some detectable green in them. The darker shades end up looking black to me.
I have the Monteverde Olivine and the Roher & Klingner Alt-Goldgrun. I like them all. The last two sailor inks might be worth checking out in sample size. Thanks for this and all your videos.
This is by far the BEST video of its type I’ve seen. And believe me I watch a ton of pen and ink videos. Your observations are descriptive without being repetitive. I never understood the term “wet” ink (all ink is wet! ) until you illustrated it with such clarity. I love the experience of writing with fountain pens and I’m just starting to recognize how important the ink is to the feeling of the nib on the paper. I could go on and on about the tactile experience of writing! As I write this tons of questions are bubbling up…. I wish we could meet for coffee!
Oh my gosh, thank you!! That makes me so happy to hear. I’ve been aiming to answer questions I knew I’ve wondered about when deciding what to buy. I feel the same way about fountain pens! It’s so fun to learn all of the intricacies and find the best combinations.
The Sailor inc 324 is actually a shading ink it looks like to me. Thank you for sharing your sample pack from Goulet - it's a great store!. :Love the Platinum Forest Black. I also own the Monteverde Olivne - a great choice as well.
Thank you, thank you! This video came at the perfect time and was super helpful! I’ve been looking for a dryer ink to use in one of my pens that writes too wet for my liking, and this video helped me find it. And I also bought a lot of olive green samples from Goulet Pens, so I’m going to clean up my pen now and try out the Platinum Forest Black. Yes, please! Can you do this type of video for other sample sets?? 🙏🏼
Ahh yay, I’m so glad this was helpful! I can definitely make more videos like this in the future - I’ll have to go through my samples and see what I’ve got.
Of course, make more videos like this one! 😊 I took a chance and bought the Monteverde Olivine because it was the only one that I felt sure was the green I was looking for -NO REGRETS!! I 😍 it so much. It is the one I’ve planned for next week. Incidentally, I recently decided to take a chance on the Monteverde Innova black ink that comes with one of their rainbow pens, it is now my favorite black. 🤷🏽♀️, Monteverde 🤨🤔
Great video! I actually am looking for green inks since I have only tried a few so far. My current favourite is Diamine Evergreen which is a dark green with cool undertones, a lot of shading and a dark coppery sheen very similar to the Sailor Shikiori Tokiwa-Matsu. It's such a dynamic ink! I am also a fan of unsaturated colours so Platinum Forest Black and Sailor Studio 370 were my favs from this video. Also, I think the ink effect you noticed is called a halo.
3:28 The term for that is "halo". 12:22 That has been my experience with the few Monteverde inks that I have tried. They create thicker lines and try to seep through the page. They don't like cheaper papers. They're not bad inks but I prefer to reach for other options. Thanks for doing this comparison. I came to watch this video because I need a green/brown ink to represent March in my planner. Noodler's Army is visually the best option from this selection but I don't like how Noodler's inks have the tendency towards never fully drying (I'm a lefty). Have you since come across an ink that looks similar? Diamine's Safari seems to be my best bet. I'm waiting for it to go on sale and am continuing to look into other options until then.
I have sailor 370 and Rohrer & Klingner Alt Goldrun, the latter which i absolutely love in my stub nibs. My other favourite green is Robert Oster Moss. I have gone through three samples of it an finally bought the bottle. Looks a little similar to the monteverde.
I too use the Alt Goldgrun in my one and only stub nib. It shows off some shading in this intriguing ink. If you dab the nib tip inyo a paper towel, you can see the separate gold (yellowish) and grun (green) come out.
I chose sailor shikiori waka-uguisu as my green for my last currently inked and it is my absolute favorite!!! I love it so much I bought a bottle the next day. You are right it is the perfect spring green! :D
I spent several years and many dollars trying to find "my" green, including many of those featured here. I knew what I was looking for was somewhere on the olive/brown border, but I wasn't really satisfied until I found the Kobe greens, which are amazing, and then eventually settled on Diamine Classic Green as an affordable daily writer. Honorable mentions though to R&K AltGoldgrun, which I love for painting, and Diamine Safari. I do find, as this review shows, that a range of greens on a page gives a more pleasing effect than just one, and provides a great field for bolder accent colors to show off in, so I don't mind having several greens inked at any one time.
@@JournalSunshine I have Kobe no's 28, 45 and 49 and all of them are awesome! No's 1 and 35 look interesting too, although 35 and 28 are apparently an either/or. There's also a Biotope Green, which looks a bit like Diamine Wagner? They are expensive as imported inks but they have flawless properties and such a depth of color that other inks look flat in comparison. I also have "my" brown (#40) and a couple of glorious pinks (#s 12 and 54) from the Kobe range, and am looking to pick up their Violet-Grey (#10), but it's the Greens that were a breakthrough for me. Good luck! Post results please!
I’ll have to try that ink! The pen sounds lovely - folks have been having a hard time finding the glass dip pen I use since JetPens doesn’t have it anymore, so maybe I’ll check that out if I end up needing a new one.
Super helpful and enjoyable video, thank you. I gravitate to green inks, and olive-wise have the Alt Goldgrun, and Monteverde Olivine. Also Herbin Vert d’empire, and Diamine Safari. Olivine is my fave for writing; Alt-Goldgrun to look at on a page.
Love this video, I have been searching for a green I love and tend to lean more towards olives as they're not at bright and in your face. My favorites of these are the Crocodile Green and Forest Black.
My favorite color is green and this gives me an idea on what inks to try next thank you diamine inks are really good too i love the meadow and the light green which i always have inked up in my fp thanks pls do more vids like this i would love to see it
I have a sample of the Platinum Forest Black. I like it quite a lot. It writes fairly comfortably, which is saying something since I prefer wet inks. I probably won’t get a bottle of it though, I’m more into jewel tones and clean colours, trying to find the perfect green atm.
I tried De Atramentis Jane Austen and its really pretty. Like a black olive green? But its not exactly what Im looking for. I really like the noodlers army green from your swatch though and will order a sample of that. Thanks for sharing!
I have no clue about the Japanese names, but Alt Goldgrun is probably "Alt Goldgrün", which would be "old goldgreen" in German. So many beautiful green tones; it's really hard to pick a favourite!
I enjoyed your video. I have the Monteverde Olivine and I love this ink so much. I put it in my Dk. Olive Kaweco Sport with a broad nib and that's the only pen I have put it in, I just ordered another bottle. I will be trying some of the other olive greens that you have shown. Would love to see more videos like this.
Ooh, it’s a perfect ink for that pen! I have the same Kaweco Sport but with a fine nib, though I’ve been wanting to switch it out for a medium. Thank you for commenting - I’m so glad you liked the video!
Hi! I only discovered your channel after buying your cover from Chic Sparrow, but that just means I’ve got many lovely videos to watch now! - I love how the Sailor Studio 370 looks. Also love Rohrer & Klingner Altgoldgrün (which means “antique gold green”, like the shade antique gold can take on if it corrodes), which I own a bottle of. If you’re interested in green inks with red shading, you might want to check out Diamine Garland btw!
I have a bunch of Noodler’s ink samples but none of them have jumped out at me enough to use them beyond just test swatches. Eventually, I’ll try them out in a pen!
I love your swatch book and I need a stamp like that. But I have to find one that spells colour like we do here in Canada or it would just drive me nuts!
The 370, and the olivine! I didn't like the lighter inks! ' olive' lol, the inks are beautiful though. They all had 'skin' in the game and none were the 'pits'😚
I would love it if you would do some writing with a fountain pen with the Rohrer and Klinger alt goldgrun! It looks like a beautiful color! I loved your video! I think you should do more 😂
I’ll keep that in mind for sure the next time I’m ready to ink up a pen! So happy you liked the video - I’m excited to work on more like it. Thank you for commenting.
Love your content! Just curious if your Moonman nib was actual glass or acrylic? I bought a similar pen from Jet Pens and disappointed to later realize it was not glass. ❣️✨
The one I have has an acrylic body and cap with a glass nib, based on the description on JetPens, which is what I prefer because I feel like I would immediately break a completely glass pen. I like it but it looks like they don’t sell them anymore.
